    I am my dishwasher and I often use dish soap on a sponge but, as Melissa pointed out, you can use a lot of dish soap using this method. Melissa's DIY all purpose cleaner recipe inspired me to develop a more cost effective use of the dish soap. I make up a 3:1 dilution of water to dish soap into an empty dish soap bottle and use this on my sponge. I still get plenty of suds, it's easier to use and a little goes a long way. I remove the labels from my old bottles for a more minimalist look and keep my current bottle of mix on my kitchen windowsill for easy access. I've been doing this for a while now and now have four old dish soap bottles so, when I buy my dish soap I make it up into my 4 bottles straightaway and store the extras under my kitchen sink. When I crack open the last bottle of dish solution, I know it's time to add dish soap to my shopping list. 😊

      I do something similar, but in a small bin that I keep by the sink. And I don't empty out the bin afyer every wash. I just add a little more hot water each time, and just keep washing, until the suds are al.ost gone and the dish soap loses its affectiveness.

    For stainless steel water bottles (or any reusable bottle): put a couple tbs of salt, a few drops of dish liquid, and some water. cover and shake for like 20 seconds (longer if it's really grimy). Then you just have to wash the rim and rinse. The salt will scrub the inside pretty well!

      btw this also works great for small bottles and vases!

      A couple of spoonfuls of raw rice just covered with water and a drop of
      dish soap is also a great way to clean bottles. Just shake for around 20 secs and rinse in hot water

      Sierra Ferguson
      My hubby PROMISED me that he would ALWAYS wash them ALL of the time, when we first got married 21 years ago... (he KNEW I hated more than ANYTHING else), and his apartment (he was living in when we got married) not only didn’t HAVE a dishwasher, but there wasn’t even a space where one could be added! (He didn’t have a washer & dryer for clothes, either!)
      His bathroom didn’t even have a shower(!), just a tub, and a sink with SEPARATE faucets for hot & cold water!! And NO electric outlet in the entire bathroom!! (I had to plug in my hair blow-drier in around the corner from the bathroom door to the electric stove/range top!)
      His promise (to ALWAYS wash ALL of our dishes ALL of the time) did not last long, though.
      Thank goodness the house we live in now does have a dishwasher! (But 99% of the time I have to load it.) He “knows” how, but he does it wrong. (& I hate that.) And when I ask him to do it MY way, he refuses to. Not even to make me happy.

      This is the oldest trick in the book; "helpless" spouse who doesn't WANT to do something and so fails at it on purpose. I would have thought in the very beginning when he said he would ALWAYS do the dishes, "this guy is a liar - a nice liar that I love, but a liar none the less." So I'm glad you have a dishwasher now, but if you want him to ever do the dishes you need to have a heart to heart and lose the attitude that YOUR way is the only way. He will discover soon enough that the dishes don't get clean if they're packed wrong. And if they do get clean, you are both happy!

      Bahaha, ladies you got what you asked for. My sister would be super fussy & non of her partners helped for long. I raised my sons with the rule, do it right & I won't ask you often to do it. Do it wrong & you get to do it again until you get it right. Guys learn quickly to do it right. 1 daughter-in-law fell for the trick like you ladies have & he rarely helps, other daughter-in-law just went great, we can work as a team. He washes dishes, clothes, irons, vacuums, mops, cooks. She doesn't let him do the bathroom & he does outside the house. They both work hard, raise their children & are a great team.

    I have never minded washing dishes. I have been married over 47 yrs & have not had a dishwasher the majority of that time. I now have a dishwasher.
    I have never put gloves on to wash dishes. I rinse dishes under running water...but I don't let it run between rinses. I wash an item, turn the faucet on, rinse, turn faucet off. Rinsing by having a sink of rinse water, suds are going to collect in it!

    • @Kikkii727
      @Kikkii727 4 года назад +1

      Pat Wagner Totally agreed. To save dish detergent and to make sure I’ve sanitized and gotten rid of any germs, I keep a clean medium sized plastic bowl and fill it up with extremely hot water and add a squirt of dish soap and a baby sterilizing tablet, wash up my dishes, rinse with cold water because it gets rid of suds faster, and let them dry. And of course keep all my sponges and sink clean and free of moisture and bacteria. It really is effortless and efficient..

    i know the laziest and least effort way to wash my dishes, no scrubbing required.
    also great for fragile and hard to reach in dishes, like thin travel mugs and such.
    i let everything soak in the sink filled with warm water and a little bit of dishwasher detergent powder. the enzymes in the detergent break down the grease and dirt. and i don't even need to touch it. just rinse well afterwards, and if you put some vinegar in the rinse water even better.
    about 10 minutes of soaking will be enough for most dishes, but longer won't hurt anything, forgetting the dishes and leaving them to soak for 48 is totally fine, just rinse well.
    liquid dish detergent could work but isn't as effective because the powder detergent contains enzymes and bleach(this is what disinfects the dishes very well) but liquid detergent can only contain one of those because in liquid the enzymes and bleach will interact and the enzymes will be broken down and deactivated by the bleach. in powder both can be stable.
    and i use powder instead of pods because a pod is way too much to use at once and powder can be portioned out differently.
    also if you think this is dangerous, this is literally how your dishwasher does the dishes. a dishwasher only rinses dishes, no scrubbing or anything. the detergent does all the work.

    • @mieke96
      @mieke96 6 лет назад +2

      the story behind how i found this out is that i hated cleaning my water bottles and my glass double walled tea travel mug. those things couldn't go in the dishwasher and i got curious why. so i did some research to how dishwashers work and found out that 1) the heat is the reason some stuff can't go in the dishwasher, dishwashers often use almost boiling water. and 2) you can emulate the dishwasher with lower temperatures that the dishes can handle using the method in the parent comment.

    Melissa! I use a way easier method to clean burnt pots and pans. No scrubbing and no elbow grease!
    I just put 2 parts of white vinegar to 1 part of water (basically you need the liquids to cover the burnt surface). I put a lid on it and bring everything to a boil. The boiling vinegar lifts all the burnt layer off and the pot shines back like in its early days! (Of course not to use with cast iron)

    • @kayerin5749

      Vinegar smell dissipates pretty rapidly. And it is such a miracle cleaner! If you like make an air freshener with water, alcohol and essential oil and spritz that around the kitchen. Melissa has a recipe under her DIY cleaning solutions and the one about essential oils.

    Having never owned a dishwasher, my family and I have always washed all our dishes by hand. These are all excellent tips, but we've done it a lot simpler and a little differently.
    ## Always scrape off food stains with a paper towel before putting them in a sink, and fill each of them with water.
    We don't bother immersing them under water. We fill each cups and dishes with hot water and leave them for a few minutes before washing. It has always been more than sufficient to lift remaining gunk.
    ## We use a bowl to dilute a small amount of dish soap with water and use a plastic/nylon scrubbing pads to wash dishes with the diluted soap.
    A sponge tends to get clogged up and keep oily stuff, but a plastic scrubbing pad nicely scrapes off a thin layer of oil and dirt without trapping them inside the pad. Diluting soap helps to make rinsing easier and quicker.
    ## Train yourself to be ok with getting hands wet.
    Washing dishes gets a lot easier when you remove your mental block against getting your hands wet. Once you get over it, you will clean and finish more frequently instead of piling up.
    I finish washing all the dishes, utensils and cookware for 4~5 people in about 10 minutes max, often quicker, including the brief initial soak time. I also wash while cooking, so the amount of cookware I need to clean after our meal is next to nothing. The key is to wash as you go, and NEVER pile up. If you have time to rinse, you can finish washing instead.
    A good hand-washing habit has proved itself to be very beneficial in our case. We don't need to do any maintenance work for a dishwasher because we don't own one. We have more space for other things in the kitchen. We hold a minimal set of dishes and utensils because they always get cleaned and be ready to go again within a few minutes. We don't need to worry about what item should not go into a dishwasher. We have successfully removed the entire category of maintenance work and the need to use dishwasher peripherals.

    The stuck- on stuff in the bottom of a pan comes up easier if you add a drop of dish soap to the pan first Scientifically, this actually breaks down water surface tension thereby deglazing pan with low heat. Thanks for the baking soda tip Melissa. I can't seem to keep enough around and I've learned so much more about natural ways to clean from you.
    I am a bit curious as to why you didn't stress that glasses are always washed first, then plastic, china, silver, then heavier things. I always thought this was the most important aspect of handwashing dishes, etc.

    Thanks, Melissa! I *hate* washing cast iron skillets. I have a really hard time taking off the caked-on food-stuffs. I also feel resentful for the extra steps of having to dry them and then adding oil to keep them from rusting. The fact that they need to be washed separately from other dishes, (to avoid soap exposure) also makes it kind of a pain to wash.

    • @lovefortruth3414
      @lovefortruth3414 9 месяцев назад

      I have a straight pizza cutter/food scraper. The easiest way I've found is, while the pan is still hot, use the scraoer. A sharp steak knife will do as well. Doing it while it's still hot makes it easier to remove the stuck-on burnt food. It literally takes seconds. Then take a paper towel or a rag that you reserve for greasy dishes only (a dry clean one) and wipe it clean. The oils from the food help reseal it. And yes, both the iron and the heat will kill any bacteria. Then, add just a touch of whatever cooking oil you use, if still needed. Depending on what you cooked and how much oil it produced, you may not need to add any. It really is that easy, and I Just do it as part of the cleaning off the counters and stove stage of clean-up...instead of the doing dishes stage, rather than as a whole entirely additional task.

I found I can soak it in baking soda and soapy water (good for non-stick surfaces like my air fryer rack) BUT I don't like having to soak and scrub. Any tips you have will be much appreciated! 😇

    I HATE doing dishes, BUT, praise God my family has dirty dishes to wash. That means there is food on our table. I love all your kitchen gadgets, even the scrubber (where did you find that again?). Least favorite thing to wash:the huge pots or the Crockpot pot that don’t fit well in the sink, especially with stuck-on food. My strategy? Soak the stuck-on stuff with a few drops of dish soap and water overnight. Easily scrub in the morning. Thanks for making this video! And kudos for doing dishes while pregnant! 🤰

    ME:
    Clean out sinks, fill the main sink with hot water, turn off the water, add PALMOLIVE dish soap (BETTER THAN DAWN), then add dishes. Let soak for 2-3 days (oops, I meant to put hours, or did I).
    Wash all cups, glasses tumblers, etc first, then do plates and silverware. Put clean items in other sink. I use moderately warm to hot water to rinse (I'm 65...what the hell do I care about spots?) I generally put my silverware on top of my plates laying flat in the sink to rinse them. I rinse off the plates and other items, put the plates in the drainer then put other items around the plates in the drainer. Pots and pans are last. (This method may seem a bit "off" to some, but it works great for me.)
    Garbage disposal! LOVE IT!

    • @kayerin5749
      @kayerin5749 6 лет назад +8

      The secret to that is NEVER use soap. Wipe out first, then put under running hot water and scrub. When clean dry immediately and spray with a dusting of Pam or EVO. Dry off excess with paper towel and you're ready to go. I love my cast iron omelette pan (which you can't even find any more!) and use it daily. Also if you have a big iron pan, put some water in it while it's waiting to be washed, and the scrubbing will be easier. But no soap - it strips the coating (that you've baked in) off and it does take forever to recondition them! Good luck!

    • @antiantipoda
      @antiantipoda 6 лет назад

      The coating on cast iron is carbonized fat. You cannot remove it with a touch of soap - think caked on burned pan. Wash with a little soap, it won't hurt anything. As mine is new every time I wash, I do a light coat with oil and leave it for a half hour on the burner to dry and carbonize the fat. With older, better conditioned pans, this is not necessary, just put on the stove for a quick dry.

    • @CBWithNicole
      @CBWithNicole 6 лет назад

      Wow, I love my cast iron. I NEVER use soap to get out gunk.... I use baking soda, heat to boil, rinse with really hot water, return to heat for faster dry, spray with cooking spray, let dry naturally, store on top of the stove top.

    The actual one dish that I hate washing the most is the large roasting pan for the turkey at Thanksgiving time. It’s nice to have such a large pan, and it has a sturdy metal rack that goes inside of it that’s nice to have, too. But it’s just too big for the sink. So you can only get half of it wet it any given time.
    However, I always line it completely with foil, to make its cleanup much easier & quicker, and then put the roasting rack inside of it, and then spray that with cooking oil spray, so that it is much easier to clean later.

    I hate washing travels mugs, so I came up with a way to do it where don’t have to try to get your hand into it (but can’t because it’s too narrow). I put a small amount of gel dishwasher detergent in it and fill with really hot water. Stir it a bit and leave over night. Then I pour that water out and rinse really well and voila a clean travel mug. Might work for stainless steel water bottles too.

    I don't like washing silverware because as dental asistand I used to wash a loooooooooot of dental instruments lol, butI actually like washing dishes because I wok standing on one place only, but hate to clear, clean up, dawn and around the table / chairs (because we have teens and a toddler lol) and the whole dinning area. Also putting things away from dining room to the kitchen, sweeping and mopping it's more work than doing the dishes. I've had dishwasher in few of the homes I've lived and until last October when we moved to Montreal (yes, I do miss it a lot) so, I now soak dishes and rinse then in water and one last time under running water. I also hand dry them because I hate water spots marks. Dishes are so important to me, they are either where I cook or eat from, so yes, they have to be perfect.
