You have converted me into using natural products for cleaning (except for toilet bowl cleaner) but everything else is stuff I have picked out from your videos. I recently got a bad case of cough and realized using store bought cleaning products really aggravated it. So ever since I started cleaning with natural stuff; I no longer kill myself trying to clean. I seriously want to thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with the rest of us. 😊

It's important to think about the kinds of disposable gloves you use while cleaning. For instance, one of the most commonly-used gloves are latex-based disposable gloves, which are usually used in food prep jobs. The best gloves to use for cleaning, in my opinion, are nitrile gloves. The main difference between these two gloves, is that the food-prep (typically latex-based) gloves only protect what you touch from the possible germs on your hands, not the other way around. Nitrile gloves are key when handling harsh chemicals, and/or bodily fluids such as blood because they protect your hands from harmful substances or contagions. Working in hotels has taught me the importance of knowing the difference between these kinds of disposable gloves.

I agree. I use Nitrile gloves and I've found them much more comfortable.

Beware, some people are allergic to latex. It has increased with repeated exposure during healthcare and cleaning. While not too many people are allergic, many times the allergic reactions are severe requiring medical attention.

I love my steamer. It's a mop, and a hand held and it cleans without chemicals. Loosens up dirt, grease and grime. Cleans just about anything. I still use my home made stuff, and a swiffer for quick cleaning.

@@GoogleAccount-oe9im I have an old shark handheld and a shark mop. I also have a Haan sweeper mop and a Haan do everything steamer that is built like an old canister vacuum. All of mine are older models that I have had for years. the shark handheld is huge, one of the first made. It has a canister with a shoulder strap and a hose that comes off it where the attachments fit. It comes with a mop. The big Haan has the handheld attachments as well as a mop head. I can do walls, ceilings, and carpet with that big boy! I use each for different tasks. The big boys are more for full house cleaning, spring cleaning, big tasks. the shark mop is more like my weekly mop when things are the normal dirty or if I need fast cleaning. I don't use the shark handheld for mopping. The Haan might be a huge beast but I've used that monster to rid the house of fleas before, it gets much hotter and makes better steam. the shark is more for every day. the Haan is build better and heavier duty.

I have been trying to give you some of the neat things I do when I am cleaning. I do not use sponges where I live because they don't dry well or stay clean. I use microfiber clothes that I buy in the automotive section. I use white for glass and Windows, blues for stoves, counters, and red for toilets. I use grey and a real plush yellow to and other shades for other products. I also have a bottle brush that I put soap on to wash dishes and only rinse the soap out when it is dirty. I have a pattern for cleaning toilets and for folding my cloth too so the used side always stays to the inside when I put it in my pocket between toilets. 1st fold the microfiber cloth in 1/2 the fold it in 1/2 the other way so you have 1/4 showing, when you fold it to put it away fold it so it 1/8 X 1/4 to close it. As for the toilet, lightly mist the top, tank, both sides of both parts of the seats and then the rim of the toilet. Next go back to the top with your red cloth and wipe the top until it is dry and shinny then move on to the tank and make sure it is dry and shinny before you move onto to the next part of the seat and then on the the rim. Now my cloth is damp enough to wipe all of the base of the toilet starting on one side at the very back and coming to the front and then pass the cloth off to the other hand to keep going all the way to the back. If you need to rest your hand on the rim so you can move safety and smoothly don't forget to rewipe the area where you put your hand so it it print free. I prefer Lysol spray( crisp linen aerosol ) with a very lite mist to wipe dry for a clean shine but I also buy the concentrate and buy a bottle that gives me a very fine mist. If I have a Nasty toilet I pre-clean with a wipey and throw it away to keep my cloth as clean as possible and then I clean it as normal. If a toilet hasn't been used when you clean the next week just mist and wipe it down so it stays nice and clean. Please flush after you us the brush inside the bowl and rewipe the rim if spotted so it is spotlessly clean. Same for stoves but use the thick yellow microfiber cloth to buff it out for a final shine ( Costco, thick yellow). Grey for dishes at home or for cleaning stainless ( buff with yellow). I also use a weird shade of blue for a special sealer and buff with my yellow that I tuck into my belt so it is alway handy.

Sorry Melissa, you are not going to be thrilled with this one lol. Thanks to you I bought a cordless Dyson vacuum about two years ago and I went from dreading vacuuming to enjoying it. I use it every day on my floors. I love it so much better than a broom and if I didn't have this vac, I would only be vacuuming once a week with my large corded one. With mostly bare floors and two cats, vacuuming is a daily must.

Coconut oil for everything! We recently installed new floors which got stained by something oil/grease based and would not budge with soap. But I slapped some coconut oil on it and it came out immediately! In addition, I love coconut oil for removing sticker residue. Also, I noticed that you touched the toilet with your disposable gloves and then touched the spray bottle D: !! Doesn't that defeat the purpose of using gloves? I wouldn't recommend plastic spray bottles for essential oils because the oil tends to seep into the plastic making it stain/smell like that EO. Plus, EO's tend to degrade plastic and many oils tend to deteriorate when exposed to sunlight.

I have two products that while I don't use them frequently I wont be without. The first is Mr. Clean Magic Erasers. They're amazing they're tough enough to remove scuff marks and the yellowish brownish grime made of grease/oil, tobacco smoke & dust that had been on my great grandmother's cookie jar (my remembers it sitting on the kitchen counter when they'd visit her grandparents & my mom's 64) for decades but gentle enough that to not ruin the finish on that same cookie jar. My other one is OxiClean. After almost 20 years of use the bottom of my kitchen is scratched and ends up looking less than wonderful even with regular cleaning. To get it looking wonderful again I fill the sink with really hot water and a generous amount of OxiClean. I then let the sink soak for several hours at least (I usually try to do this before going to bed so it can soak overnight) before putting on dish gloves and giving it a good scrub. After draining the sink I rinse thoroughly with hot water and end up with a bright sparkling sink. My sink is white so I don't if this would work well on a colored sink or stainless steel sink.

Also, essential oils, I use orange and lemon. I add them to the vinegar as a laundry softener 😁
And peppermint essential oil with a bit of water in a stainless steel sprayer bottle to keep my house safe from spiders.. 😁

I love the lime green fabric mesh cleaning cloths at Walmart (3/pack). They make dish soap “grow” so a little goes a long way, they don’t scratch, and clean up really well. I just use a big blob of soap, and squish the suds through the cloth, then rinse thoroughly (like hand-washing your bra or pantyhose…do women still wear pantyhose?). Then air dry.

Pro tip I learned a long time ago: When shopping for a new vacuum cleaner (including affordable cordless models!), go to places like Best Buy that have floor models and see which ones are dinged up and have dust in the nooks and crannies, etc. At close, the employees use the floor models to clean their section, and the ones that look the most used are the favorites.
I thought that was neat and just wanted to share.
For the record, my Shark Rocket stick vac still thrills me now 3 years in. Chronic pain, mobility issues, multiple pets, living in a tiny space (230 sq/ft) on a muddy farm and I have zero complaints. I loved it in my previous 4 bedroom home, too. The kids thought it was fun to use, too, which made life a lot easier.
    I hope this helps someone!

My go-to cleaner is OdoBan. I found it decades ago and just ordered 4 more jugs off amazon. I don't know if it is an enzyme or anti-bac or what it is but it works. I de-scented cat messes in my house that were old because I could not find a cleaner that would clean them and I had a sick kitty who would not use the litter box until she was well. I de-scented every single one and have used OdoBan ever since.

I recently found a (large) All Purpose Spray Bottle (name printed on bottle) at Target that seems ikemit is very good quality, and is comfortable. This was after buying more expensive ones at two different hardward stores that were supposed to be high qualtiy. . . and were NOT! Great video Melissa :)

I just found your channel and love the tips. I have to say I researched vacuums for 2 years b4 I bought a new one because they are not something I want to purchase every year. I love my vac!! I chose the Shark battery operated upright that comes with a 2nd rechargeable battery and is detachable to a handheld. It came with 4 additional tools, runs for 20+ minutes on high power and cleans amazingly. Another plus is no more expensive bags to buy ever! The dust receptacle pops open and you place it over your trash. Done. I also found a coupon for Kohl's for it and got an additional amount off for opening a charge account, making it very affordable. Win-Win for everyone!

Swiffer products! Love the extendable duster the most, but also like the dry/wet mop. They are a life saver on bathroom floors. I use a broom first then Swiffer to get any dust and hair the broom left behind. I also like that since you throw them away you don't transfer any dirt/hair/germs to other clients homes.

Hands down my favorite cleaning product is my Bona floor cleaning system. Really just a mop with a tank and great cleaning pads. Hardwood is a big investment, so I try to take care of it. The Bona liquid cleans and brings back the shine without hard scrubbing.

    Hi Melissa !
I have a request, something most guitarists I think remain very confused about. How to clean a guitar? Fretboard and body?
Since you seem to understand different sorts of cleaners and their effects, maybe you can figure out the best way? Something that cleans the wood and also takes care of it.
I imagine maybe some kind of gentle cleaner, and then a treatment oil?

    • @sw4712
      @sw4712 7 лет назад +1

Essential oils welcome, by the way. Not afraid of those.

    • @davidrossharris
      @davidrossharris 7 лет назад +1

Any natural oil used for wood like linseed or mineral oil would work fine. If I'm replacing strings, I'll take 2-3 strings off one side (to keep neck tension), and wipe down the fretboard with a microfiber cloth. If it's really grimy you can put a few drops of water on the cloth to help clean. I'll then rub just a little bit of mineral oil down the board with a clean cloth, which both cleans and protects the board. Don't mess with oil around any pickups. If there are harder to reach areas, use a baby's toothbrush (extra soft) to get into those areas and brush out anything. Repeat on the other side. If there are cracks in the board, music stores usually sell some sort of restoration cream. While strings are off, you can also use the toothbrush and wet cloth to clean the bridge area.
For polished areas like head or body, just wiping it down with a dry microfiber after each use would be enough to keep it in shape.

My favorite spray by far is CleanSmart Daily Surface Cleaner and Pet-safe Disinfectant (sold by Simple Science, LLC), which you can get from the manufacturer or Amazon. It’s safe, effective, after two seconds of chlorine smell (like a swimming pool), it’s scent-free. The only problem I’ve had is the spray bottles don’t always work well. Once you open them (not easy, I gotta tell you), transfer to a spray bottle of your choice, WELL MARKED, and go to town!

2 tablespoons of white vinegar, 2 teaspoons of borax powder, 2 cups of warm water, 6 to 8 drops of tea tree oil - pour into a spray bottle, give a good shake to dissolve the borax and you are good to go - I sometimes add lavender oil as well.

Melissa, the tool that you brought me to knowing more about is microfiber. Though I haven't bought your clothes, which I'm seriously thinking of doing sometime in the near future, as you spoke about the type of microfiber and the quality of how strong and week some maybe and you are right because I noticed it myself. But I use microfiber clothes for everything when I clean now. Also the essential oils, as I use them when I make my own version of castile/cleaning solution soap. I learned more about dyi cleaning solutions from you. Thank you.

I have a bissel feather weight for vacuuming, the Swiffer Bissell w/steam mostly on floors. Been using peroxide & Dawn soap mixed up And spray bottle for countertops but you taught me that the peroxide isn’t effective in the clear-ish spray bottle I’ve been using from dollar tree. I need to try a new spray bottle. I’m trying to be more organic b/c I have a kitty & fumes egg on migraines...I’ve been liking white vinegar with the Dawn soap to clarify windows remove soap scum from the shower. I like your suggestions for Sponges and want to try them out as I have just been using hand towels and paper towels and the hand towels generate a ton of laundry for me. Thanks for your tips I love your channel!

Ace Hardware has some awesome sprayers as well. One thing you didn't mention about the how the sprayer is. How fine the misting is and product coverage. You don't want to squeeze the trigger more times than you have to and you don't want to be wiping up excess cleanser.

Of course, vinegar and water in a "spray bottle" and the other thing I have found, and you might not like this, is eco clothes which are micro fiber and you can clean almost anything with plain old water. Now I am not saying they are better or worse than yours because I have never tried yours as they are a little pricey for me. You do a great job!

Two things that have changed my life are 1) water & Vinegar in a Master Blaster spray bottle from Walmart, and Crystal Wash Balls. I've saved double what I paid for those with the savings! I don't mind the vinegar smell, which dissipates quickly, and have allergies, which that and the wash balls are great for!!!

I have a canister Dyson which is light weight and it works well.Yes, they cost more but they last longer. Mine is 4 yrs old, gets used hard and has held up beautifully. A little hint I use when vacuuming my area rugs especially in winter when static cling from the house heat builds up. In a spray bottle,1/4 c. vinegar ( use essential oil if the smell bothers you but it dissipates so fast) and 2 cups of water. Spray the rug down well, let it dry then vacuum. You can also use fabric softener or a fragrant hair conditioner, a teaspoon to make the solution smell nice plus it also helps with the static.
