Nice job Lee and John! Here’s a couple of pointers: it’s hard for a noise gate to remove the hum picked up from a guitar that close to the amp’s power transformer, or to completely eliminate guitar feedback. We made sure the gate reduced the amps noise a lot but not to the point of affecting its natural attack and decay. If you had turned the guitar down you’d hear what I mean. Also on the Presence control, like the latest 50W 5150 III we used a different taper that better spreads the knob over the whole range, so it might seem a little edgy at half or more. The volume reduction on the 1/4 power does help turn it down, so it does at least help get a reasonably low volume tone. The Boost kicks on a fixed 8dB input Boost PLUS the Boost knob is a Master Volume Boost, so even down you get more gain on both channels with it. Fun!
I'm still trying to figure out exactly what happens when you engage the "burn" switch. On-board TS circuit in the pre-amp? I'm sure that's a secret you don't want to reveal. ( I'm still waiting for gut-shots of this amp. No photos online yet. )

Wow! What a great sounding amp! Maybe too much gain for the captain, but even at the highest gain levels it was still articulate and clear sounding. Not all mud and flub like so many other 6l6 style high gain amps from California. That drive mode on channel 1 with the Les Paul was hot rodded Marshall '80s rock all day long and a spectacular rock tone. Pricing is fantastic even here in Canada. I've never been much of a 5150 lover, except when Eddie played through them, but this amp may well find it's way into my collection for the solid balls to the wall rock crunch tone on channel 1. Also, the cabinet emulated DI actually sounded very very good and not significantly different than the miked up amp sound. This is not usually the case on Andertons videos when switching between miked and the DI signal. So that is also very usable. Liking digital John! Great player but also a highly dynamic player who knows when to really dig in or play pretty to demonstrate the best parts of the gear being demonstrated. Good shout on DJ.

Interesting the evolution of this amp. EQ on mine seems to be very responsive Sounds great here, sad they seemed to have removed its versatility though.
This is a different amp. 2 channels. More vintage voiced. Cheaper... almost half the price. You can get amp head and cab (or a cpmbo AND a cab) for a lot less $ than just the head from the 3channel amps.
LEE!! Never sounded better, with all of that gain, the Les Paul, and some nice bluesy phrasing...sounds like you are channeling a bit of Gary Moore or John Sykes, even? More, please.
You should have did more demonstration on the clean side of things on that amp I think people would have been very impressed I watched another demonstration and the guy basically just covered the clean on that with different settings and it's very impressive.
For a 1x12 the gain sounds way better than I thought it would, and that clean is way nicer than a Peavey 6505 or 6505+. Damn, shows that hybrid gain stages can work, got enough tubes to round it out and give that distortion.

I bought both the EL34 and the 6L6 last Saturday. I set them both up next to my JCM 800 and I have to say, the EL34 gets pretty close to the JCM 800 tone on the green channel with overdrive on and drive set about 2. With a TS9 Tube Screamer in front of it with level dimed, tone at 12 o'clock and drive at 0. Eq Settings were Low at 8, mid 4, trebbile 8, resonance 2, Prescence 6. Kick in that TS9 and closed my eyes, and A-B back and fourth to my 2203 JCM 800 and sounds incredibly close On red channel, same eq settings and red channel drive at 2 with a Boss SD1 overdrive in front, drive at 0, tone at 12 o'clock and level dimed it has a killer tone for the heavvier stuff. I don't like the burn button, it is just way to much. I also running a CE5 Stero chorus, HOF Reverb, FlahBack2 delay and a EH 720 Looper in the effects loop and do not use the amp reverb. In front I am running Les Paul Custom Shop into a TU2 tunner, into Boss 200EQ to better shape the tone, into Morley Mark Tremonti Wah, then to TS9, SD1 and OC5 Octave. Last in Chain is NS2 Noise gate. The EQ pedal allows you to refine the tone really well. After 5 days of having both, I settled on the EL34 and returned the 6L6. The El34 is just a little more reminiscent of the classic Marshall tone. A bit warmer, and not as harsh as the 6L6. If I was a hardcore metal player, then the 6L6 would have been my choice. For me, the EL34 is a winner. And I forgot to mention the clean channel. Same EQ settings, but I do have a dedicated eq channel on the boss EQ 200 just for clean that gives probably the best clean tone I have ever heard from any amp. I have a fender twin reverb, and a 1977 Roland Jazz Chorus 120 I usually A-B with my JCM 800 for cleans, and the tone I got out of the EL34 with the eq pedal, is surprisingly better. No need for me to lug multiple amps to the gig now. Being a diehard vintage amp snob, I was very reluctant to give this a try. But wow!! I am glad I did. The vintage stuff can stay at home now where it is safe, and this will now be my gigging amp. Less to haul around to achieve great tones all in one head versuses A-B ing 2 amps, two mics in front and two channels to dial in on front of house board. This is a win for me. Never thought I would say this, and immediatley hated it until I gave it a try. I guess you can teach an old dog new tricks. PS: I spent about 6 hours total, tone shapping with EQ 200 to each specific channel to achieve the tones I finally dig. TS9 on Green Channel with Overdrvive engaged, and SD1 for Red Channel no burn button. The burn will never be used. And one final tweak, I removed the front grill and took off the 5150 and EVH logo and put behind the grill. Looks a lot better estetically. Now it's a custom lol
@@tarkett8529 Better still the new Celestion NEO Creamback it is half the weight. The really cool thing about it is can take 60 watts so you can use one speaker on a 50 watt amp. The sweetest thing is if you put beside a really old Brit made Greenback they sound the same. I do not lie, ..the same!!! Don't let the Creamback name fool you. You get that classic Greenback sound without lugging a 4x12 around.
@@Paul_Lenard_Ewing I actually prefer a 412 for rock and metal, personally I don’t like the neo creambacks there’s a little too much brittleness on the top end in comparison to a normal creamback and the greenback is voiced a little differently.
Bought one a guitar center the guy said they just unboxed it but I think it was on the floor for a while. Got it home plugged it in and started playing and poof it blew up and almost caught fire. I inspected it and noticed the ohms were set for 8 ohms. I looked at the PDF online and the speaker is a 16ohm. I returned it got a new one and the ohms were set to 16. It works flawlessly and rips pretty good. I'm not sure if the meltdown was from the wrong Ohm setting but be careful bringing things home from GC and assuming they're set up correctly. People go in there with kids and they like to mess with switches and shit. This is why I prefer things in a box not floor demo items
😂 I doubt it's from the 8 ohm trans with 16 ohm speaker, in fact I've done it a few times at very high volume after forgetting to change it back to 16 ohms after using an extension cabinet. I've heard there was a few bad components that burned up a few amps on release.
13:24 "You don't buy this amplifier to be in a jazz band" - Well, I'm in a post progressive doom stoner jazz band and I'll put a big muff in front of it! :D
I find it a bit hard to believe that they're gettng that much gain out of only 2 ECC83s (and nothing else), when one of those is (presumably) acting as the phase splitter. Is there some solid-state circuitry as well?
The phase inverter is actually solid state. I want to say mosfet, but not 100% sure. I'm guessing they're using four gain stages with the two 12ax7s (like the 6505 mh). The two switches likely engage some clipping diodes, hence the volume difference.
It’s a custom Celestion we designed to sound in between the EVH Celestion from the 5150 III 412 and the G12H Anniversary we used in the 5150 III combos.
This reminds me 99% of the old DSL series, no master, shared eq, few less inputs in back and a speaker( celestion 70/80) which many don't like... Considering the DSL CR newer series have all jumped like $200 on each model, I might consider this combo instead. Anybody with this combo switched to 1/4 power, do you get decent tones rather at loud ish bedroom volumes? My 40c old version even at half power, the lead channels are pretty unusable until you get the volume past 2.. I do dig 1/4 power output
I bought one a couple of months ago and use it in the “bedroom” at 1/4 power and the volumes around 1-2 and I personally enjoy the tones at that volume but your experience may vary. I’m using it with an Ultra Strat, so not massive gain pickups, but I also tried it with a baritone in the shop (my next purchase) and it also sounded good to my ears and I was testing in the store at 1/4 power on purpose
You definitely have a noisey preamp tube, these very high gain amps are prone to the microphonics. May have to try many tubes before you find a non microphonics. 12ax7 or try 12ay7

With a TS9 Tube Screamer in front of it with level dimed, tone at 12 o'clock and drive at 0. Eq Settings were Low at 8, mid 4, trebbile 8, resonance 2, Prescence 6. Kick in that TS9 and closed my eyes, and A-B back and fourth to my 2203 JCM 800 and sounds incredibly close
On red channel, same eq settings and red channel drive at 2 with a Boss SD1 overdrive in front, drive at 0, tone at 12 o'clock and level dimed it has a killer tone for the heavvier stuff.
Old video.. but what I find from these video is that sound may vary in the video vs having it in person.
Nice video guys... wants for this amp.. a headphone jack maybe a fuller built in attenuator of sorts... but all good! Thanks for sharing
very attractive price all things considered!
21:26 - lolz "rip my face off" 🤣
I have a feeling the issue with these amps doesn’t necessarily lie with the amp itself, more the speakers they come with.
A creamback in the combo or greenbacks in the 412 cab would sort it.
No- its the amp. Theyre NOT amazing.
Definitely a cream back. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Finally some Van Halen.
More like nifty one fifty 🤘🏻
Nailed it!
@@AuntAlnico4 Makes sense
Dudes a killer guitar player!
I wouldn't call it affordable but my lord does it make my active pickup shecter sing.
An affordable 5150 fresh off the shelf?! I couldn't complain if I wanted to
Well for me the Les Paul sounded like Thor of he was playing guitar during a thunder storm.. 🎸🎸🎸🎸🎸🤪
Awesome playing!!! Would u be able to do amp channel switching with helix using 4cm?
What is the mics used and is there any post eq added?
Les paul sounds perfect❤rockin yep blazing .roll off the volume drops it in the pocket
What pedals were used? it sounded amazing, I have this amp
In the states it’s selling for $900. One could do worse, though. Classic EVH filthy goodness.
5150 is a 5150, and the channel 1 is enough for play metal. I have the old 6505 combo and sound really similar
Wait, did the Captain just lay his Custom shop Les Paul on the floor flat on the headstock? Ouch.
Nice video, but I had a stroke when Lee laid his LP on the floor. Just asking for a headstock break....
What was the wattage on this model please?
❤😮no fizz just shooting bb s.perfect combo madness sleeper screamer.they got it.godzilla amp.m look
10:19 - we are....Wyld Stallyns!
THATS
FUCKING
AWESOME
I think that the reason 80s shredding came about . Was to hide the amp noise .
@@natec4339 Thanks. that would explain it.
Interesting for the price point, I wonder what the speaker is, I would love to swap a Cannabis Rex in there to see how that reacts.
It’s a custom Celestion we designed to sound in between the EVH Celestion from the 5150 III 412 and the G12H Anniversary we used in the 5150 III combos.
@@jamesbrown7468 oh nice, ty for the info.
