- Phillips comes up with a plan as his ship is chased by two skiffs carrying armed men.
Watch Now: play.google.co...
Captain Phillips is a multi-layered examination of the 2009 hijacking of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama by a crew of Somali pirates. Based on a true story, the film focuses on the Alabama’s commanding officer, Captain Richard Phillips (two-time Academy Award®-winner Tom Hanks, Best Actor, 1993, Philadelphia; Best Actor, 1994, Forrest Gump), and the Somali pirate captain, Muse (Barkhad Abdi), who takes him hostage. The two men are set on an unstoppable collision course when Muse and his crew target Phillips’ unarmed ship; in the ensuing standoff, both men will find themselves at the mercy of forces beyond their control.

@@punkrockdavid Because you can't trust anybody with a gun on board.
@@punkrockdavid Most countries don’t like the idea of guns constantly moving in and out of their ports given how hard cargo ships (and their crews) are to search, verify, and control. There are a few floating armories that will sit in international waters on either end of particularly dangerous waterways but it’s expensive and time consuming to load and unload arms on departure/arrival in a country’s territorial waters
@@casey6556 Unloading is the easy part. You literally just throw the weapons overboard when you enter territorial waters near the port. It's a lot cheaper than stopping.

Merchant ships are unarmed. Armed ships = official naval vessels.
To read about some cool pirate stories I'd recommend an autobiography called Born Fearless by Phil Campion. He's ex SAS and did security on the boats. One time everything failed and they were coming up a rope ladder, he picked up a fridge freezer and just threw it down on them 😂
I've always thought some flammable liquid in a bottle, followed by a flare gun would do nicely.
Never understood the lack of security on ships in pirate infested waters. I get certain ports of call prohibit weapons on board cargo ships, but something could be worked out.
They 100% need weapons to ensure cargo and personel make it to the destination
Many shipping companies did start putting armed guards on their ships after this incident.
On private & charter yachts, they are often required by their insurance to have some type of security (hired mercenaries) when traveling through certain areas.
Agree, in this part of the world a mercenary security force is easily available. Would not take too much defensive firepower to stop this type of threat.
It was worked out. There has only been one piracy incident off Somalia in the past 10 years. A combination of international naval presence, some ships carrying armed security, and the re-emergence of a functioning government in Somalia capable of law enforcement. In addition, the root causes were addressed, and there has been a substantial reduction in the illegal fishing and waste-dumping by foreign ships which was depriving Somali fishermen of their livelihood.
Tom hanks always the Captain. Captain of the shrimp boat, captain in a squad which should have been headed by a sergeant, captain of a plane, captain of a merchant ship and captain of a destroyer which for me was his best performance. Hard to believe that a couple of knuckleheads on a $20 boat could actually threaten a giant ship like that, but they do. One or two rocket launchers would be an excellent deterrent...
Or a mounted machine gun, or actual armed security on these ships.
It's not the difficulty of repelling attacks, but the cost. Shipping companies calculate what's more cost efficient - lose one out of every 500 ships and a bit of ransom money, or pay a heck of a lot on every journey for proficient security out of port. Only on the most pirate infested routes this calculation comes out in favor of hired guns.
[Also, if you want to be even more cynical: The public tends to care more for human lives than share holders. So if you can pressure your countries navy into "protecting" your "poor sailors" you completely outsourse that cost, and the public even thinks it's a great idea. Go Navy!]
@MrGriff305 If that were true, why don't shipping companies do it then? Why isn't every ship even remotely close to those waters fitted with MG nests?
The truth is simple: Because while guns and ammo are (relatively) cheap, the usage of them is not. It requires either trained personell or training for your already existing personell. It requires extensive legal documentation and additional customs checks and declaration. It requires additional safe storage. It increases the insurance premiums, because it's a fire/explosion risk. I could go on...
Lead is relatively cheap, you're right. That's why piracy is a problem in the first place. But unlike the pirates who just have to get lucky on one of hundreds of attempts, the defenders must be successfull in their use of force every time. Maybe you are trained in the handling of rapid fireing weapons and attacking swift moving targets with them - targets, btw, that are still human and have a survival instinct unlike any drone or paper target - and think it easy by now. But as somebody who's gun experience ranks at "has used an air rifle once at a carnival" I can safely say that it would take WEEKS if not MONTHS of training before I was even ready to fire such a violent tool at another human, let alone hit anything with it.
@@QemeH shipping companies have been hiring armed security for years now... And piracy hasn't been a problem off the coast of Somalia since 2013.
Having armed security is much cheaper than having a ship being held for ransom.
do i look like a beggar
Should have been watching them through a rifle scope not binoculars....
@MrGriff305 cause Texas
Equipping the crew with weapons means that the shipping company expects the crew to defend the ship with against lethal forces. If a crew member is injured or killed then the shipping company is liable for damages to the crew member or there family. That liability means armed crews require special and More expensive insurance. That is a cost the shipping company doesn't to pay. Because successful hijackings are rare compared to the number of ships transiting Pirate waters and because sailing far from shore at high speed is often enough to stop pirates or prevent a boarding then ransom insurance is cheaper than arming insurance.
Facts. . but remember that guns are bad and we have to respect their right to pillage
@MrGriff305 Because that nation is dysfunctional?
Pirates: We're going to sue you for having a gun to defend yourself.

Some container ships are armed now like that, either water canons, machine guns or entire PMC detachments on board. Pirate skiffs dont do too well nowadays.
@@The_Lunch_Man sort of. most large containers do have water cannons. but no cargo ship has permanently mounted weapons because most countries dont like civilian ships being armed, even in the US its difficult do to restrictions on water travel with firearms.
instead, what they do these days, is they higher large companies like G4S who have depots achored off shore near large ports, cargo ships as theyre sailing by, will call to collect their security detachment, and contractors on board the depots will sign for weapons, and board a smaller boat, ride out and catch up with the container ship, and the boat goes back, then when they are getting close to their destination, they woll detour to the nearest depot where the depot will send a boat to collect the contractors and their weapons so that no weapons enter the destination country. much easier legally speaking and still accomplishes the same job

I had always thought these container ships should have a rotary cannon system to defend against skiffs like these.
It wasn't arming the ships that ended the pirate threat. It was the fact that those waters were soon swarming with Frigates, destroyers, and guided missile cruisers most of them carrying armed helicopters and more then a few with OnCall combat aircraft.
Ah yes let me just amass hundreds of medium sized "cargo ships" all armed with cannons and machine guns. What could go wrong?

Both of which are correct, save for the details of the latter bit. Most cargo ships travelling in waters known to be home to pirates carry armed security. Other than that, they're still unarmed.
Completely wrong.
Ships can have armed guard but they’re not part of the crew. Cargo ships and their crew aren’t allowed by law to carry weapons.
