Im looking to purchase a phantom myself. If i were to purchase some VH pipes, would the bike need to be tuned? or would it run just fine with some pipes?
I have the 2005 shadow spirit. Carbureted, chain driven. No problems ever. Won’t win any races but a great sit back and cruise bike. Does highway speeds just fine.
I have an 03 and I went from the stock 42 tooth sprocket to a 39 tooth, and made some difference on the highway, but not enough. I think 37 tooth is the lowest they go before you have to change the front sprocket. I'll probably try that next and see how it does on the highway.

I think the only thing you forgot to say is that it feel injected which is very important these days I recently sold my Honda 750 shadow ace and bought the phantom because just removing and replacing the carburetors is quite a job and if you don’t know what you’re doing it’s quite a job to rebuild them specially if you’ve let fuel sit in The carburetors for more than 20 days or so The fuel sitting in the carburetors plugs up very easily.
Got to respectively disagree on the transmission part I also Have a 2012 shadow spirit with the 750 in it and my 4th gear caps at 70 and 5th gear rides fine and it’s not revving to high until Like 97mph
I dont think that's correct. I've gone up to 85 MPH on my 2019 shadow, and I dont think the gearing has really changed in years, since I doubt Honda changes these bikes often. The top end of 2nd gear can hit 60 mph. You should be able to hit 70 mph on 3rd gear, though I'd only use that to get up to speed, not to maintain my speed. Sounds to me like you're just shifting too early, thinking it's the top end of the engine, even though it can go higher. I've actually taken the motor to the top end. You'll feel it, because the engine will refuse to go any faster.
And I say you herd correctly sir; the bike weighs around 540 lbs (230 kg) so that will be the only thing to get use to but other than that its easy to ride and maintain

My question is what kind of maintenance do you have to do with that... Is it like a car radiator? Never really goota do anything? Or do you have to top it off with coolant here and there or flush it occasionally.. or what?
TexasDad 2015 great to hear man glade you’re gonna pull the trigger on one. As far as maintenance wise....it a Honda. monkeydude3987 thanks for checking out my video; to be honest nothing has really changed since it was introduced in 2011 but besides different paint schemes and finishes
Sorry I couldn't watch the whole video if you start getting stuff wrong in the very beginning it's hard for me to believe that you're right on point of what you're saying. When you start talking about shaft drive a lot of metric cruisers have shaft drive Moto Guzzi have shaft drive. There are some that are belt driven the older ones are chain driven even the BMW cruisers were shaft drive . That being said you Honda shadow is an awesome bike and the phantom looks great.
250 pds is wife and hubby. Only thing on it lack disc brake rear. However aren't they abs which you don't mention? 250 pds ya too big you need 1100 or 1200 at least. Average weight about 150pd everytime you ride it's like double rider. Ya left out its water cooled unlike many others and fuel injected two major aspects of this scooterpp0
CC C.Elliott. It’s my first bike and I got a good deal on it. Phantom models don’t have abs but the ACE version does; as for the water cooled thing it should be obvious especially for a Japanese bike.
correction, i am 6'2 230 and the bike does highway speeds effortlessly. doesnt drone or struggle and doing 70mph is not stress at all on the engine. this guy must not have taken it out of 4th gear lol
I think that has to do with the compression, not so much how high it revs (though high-revving engine would likely have a higher compression to begin with). The compression on the shadow is less than 10:1. Even the honda rebel 500, which has a higher compression, can get away with using 87 octane. I definitely wouldn't waste money on higher octane on this bike, though, higher octane won't hurt the bike either, but you are throwing money away.
Nah man just hit up a truck stop for chrome cleaner. A phoschem (phosphoric acid based) cleaner is what most truckers use to get all the grime and crap off their chrome. Wear rubber gloves though.
@@laxrider8818 Yeah, happy to have the 1100 but with FI and 6th gear it would be unbeatable as a cruiser. I did 25 mile on I-10 at 90 MPH on Tuesday. I loved it and she did too.
Technically, you are slowing the bike down with a shaft drive, since shaft drive is heavier and less efficient, but unless you plan to race it, it really doesn't matter. Since this isn't a bike you'd be racing with, it would be kind of silly to sacrifice the reliability of a shaft drive for chain drive just to get to 60 MPH a little faster. It would save you a little on fuel, but whatever you save on fuel, you'll be wasting on a new chain and sprocket.

Any suggestions on which? Either 883 or Shadow Phantom.
obviously the 883 has more power as well as the cost of ownership but they are very reliable (not Japanese reliability but close); that being said the Honda shadow is a good solid urban all around bike. I'd say sit and test ride both bike and see what fits your style
Go Honda, Harley to unreliable and let's face it you want to get home
Would you say you seem small on the bike for your height or is it kind of a bigger bike
Adrian Bravo I’m about 5’11 270 lbs and it fits me fine
Nice review, this is actually the bike I'm planning to get down the line. I know they have been making the Phantom for a few years now - is there much difference from one year to the next? Thank you for sharing!!
monkeydude3987 thanks for checking out my video; to be honest nothing has really changed since it was introduced in 2011 but besides different paint schemes and finishes
I own one. Awesome bike, little weak on power tho.
suzuki blvd motorcycle are shaft driven also
Looking into buying my first bike. I am 6’2 and 185 lbs. would i be uncomfortable riding this because of my height?
My friend's 6'3, sold him one of mine and he loves it.
You might be a little cramped but then again I'm much bigger guy than you so you might be alright. Visit a dealership and sit on one
I love that model
Change the rear tire for a larger diameter
250 pds is wife and hubby. Only thing on it lack disc brake rear. However aren't they abs which you don't mention? 250 pds ya too big you need 1100 or 1200 at least. Average weight about 150pd everytime you ride it's like double rider. Ya left out its water cooled unlike many others and fuel injected two major aspects of this scooterpp0
Leave few hamburgers or should say few pds of hamburger
CC C.Elliott. It’s my first bike and I got a good deal on it. Phantom models don’t have abs but the ACE version does; as for the water cooled thing it should be obvious especially for a Japanese bike.
correction, i am 6'2 230 and the bike does highway speeds effortlessly. doesnt drone or struggle and doing 70mph is not stress at all on the engine. this guy must not have taken it out of 4th gear lol
Honda recommends 87 octane. You only need high octane on high revving engines.. 4 or 6 cylinders.
I think that has to do with the compression, not so much how high it revs (though high-revving engine would likely have a higher compression to begin with). The compression on the shadow is less than 10:1. Even the honda rebel 500, which has a higher compression, can get away with using 87 octane. I definitely wouldn't waste money on higher octane on this bike, though, higher octane won't hurt the bike either, but you are throwing money away.
joemann good to know, thank you 😊
Honda recommendation is 87 octane "or higher". I do not put that ethanol corn syrup in any small engine. Keep doing what you're doing with 91 non oxy
5’11” 370. Easily doing 80-85. Too scared to go faster. Not the fastest bike but definitely good enough.
For that chrome use aluminum and soapy water and you good.
Are the handle bars pretty wide?
They are a bit wide but it gives you stability
Majority of bikes are 5 speed my friend .
Speed limit in pa is 75 highway. It's a cruiser, doesn't pretend to be a sports bike.
Use steel wool and soapy water to get that off the exhaust chrome
Copy that I'll give it a try
Nah man just hit up a truck stop for chrome cleaner. A phoschem (phosphoric acid based) cleaner is what most truckers use to get all the grime and crap off their chrome. Wear rubber gloves though.
Thomas Williams copy that sir
Let's get into recycling all dat cardboard in yer garage bud.😁
Yeah...a 6th gear would be great on my VT1100C.
G Philip C haha right?!...well at least you got the cc’s to hold you; I just 400mile trip with some friends and I was struggling the whole time
@@laxrider8818 Yeah, happy to have the 1100 but with FI and 6th gear it would be unbeatable as a cruiser. I did 25 mile on I-10 at 90 MPH on Tuesday. I loved it and she did too.
Shaft drive is far better, almost zero work and doesn't slow the bike down in the real world
Technically, you are slowing the bike down with a shaft drive, since shaft drive is heavier and less efficient, but unless you plan to race it, it really doesn't matter.
Belt drive like on the vn900 is way superior
nice
I totally disagree about needing a 6th gear I’m 220 I feel fine cruising at 80 hell even faster really 🤷♂️
Beautiful bike.. Thumbs-up for your video 😁 👍🏾 This is mine, 2020 Honda Shadow Phantom 😁

He didn't turn it on lol wack review
Well...this video is really a pros and cons on what it’s like to own this bike and besides...it has stock pipes on it so sounds like your typical small displacement Japanese V-twin
Nice Bike and review..... Filthy, disorganized and appalling garage! 🤣😂
lol😂
