      I partially agree with this. I mean, he still sounds great but he can no longer sing like he did in this video. She's right, some of those notes wouldn't be good for him in the long run and probably took their toll. If you listen to Eddie now it's a bit of a slower pace, he enunciates more and the sound is a bit more folksy vs. the grittier sound in this video.

    Black is what I consider the perfect song....the lyrics, the music,the dynamics, the vocal delivery PERFECTLY convey what the song is about.

      4 1/2 unbelievable hours in 2014 last european gig of the tour in Milton Keynes. We almost couldn't take it anymore at the end... out of this world, one of my favourite clairvoyants ever.

    I like that she is genuinely worried about Ed's singing being bad for his well being. It's probably best she doesn't watch any of his scaffold climbing/stage diving videos from about that time. I still get nervous and I know he turned out fine.

In all my 32 years of listening to all types of music, that lyric sums up every broken feeling I have had about a relationship gone bad. The only other band that I hear, that have lyrics I can feel in my soul, is Tool. But this song is amazing.

    Eddie Vedder is the ultimate singer at conveying emotion. Many of their songs off that first album are intensely personal to him. He STILL brings it to this day. Their shows are as great as ever.

    The reason why his voice intrigues me and is the only one that gives me goosebumps is, that it’s such a special mixture of vulnerability/naivety and sheer infinite strength/roaring power and bravery, while still maintaining a beautiful elegance, it’s just amazing. It’s as looking in the inner of all his emotions at once.

    Eddie Vedder has always sang with his heart. He is one of the most emotional singers, he just gets in the zone of the music when he performs and it is always beautiful to see and hear. Back in the day he ran around the stage and was just so caught up in the music. He still performs now but he is more calm in the sense of not running around, but he still performs everything he does with that same passion.

      As a guy, his voice is like a calling to do something prolific, like Braveheart. Is it different for a woman, that you have a calling to kiss him, or something. His voice is out of actual mythology, if you ask me

    That "unhealthy" sound is a trademark of Eddie. Having seen them live 6 times, every show is full of that grunge style and he never misses a beat.

We used to play basketball in a local court and one of the lads got the original albums of nirvana, pearl jam, alice in chains, soundgarden, stone temple pilots...     Also, Eddie Vedder can for sure still do those notes! Some of his most impressive vocal performances Ive heard are from more modern performances

      While he may be able to still nominally hit the notes now, he cannot generate the power or intensity that he could here. Aging stinks, but so does Eddie's smoking habit. Additionally, this style just isn't conducive to longevity. There's a reason she is cringing when he's reaching the climax of this song. She should definitely avoid listening to "Blood" or the entire 1995 Soldier Field concert.

    this *whole* set is utterly transcendent.
    it's a perfect blend of the band being tight af, their brilliance with their instruments, the vocals (mesmerising & tearjerkingly good), the atmosphere, setting & setlist.
    Porch ought to be pickled & preserved in a museum somewhere tbh.

    Pearl jam VH1 rock honors The Who, Love Reign o'er Me, Eddie can still kill it at 44. He is still greatest live Rock singer alive today. Saw him Rome 2018 and he was amazing at now 54 years old

      FeelItRising Damn. I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since that Rock Honors performance. They killed it on both of those songs. The recent stuff I’ve heard live unfortunately doesn’t sound as good to me. Could just be off on certain nights. He’s been pronouncing vowels really strange to me for the last few years. Still my favorite band though.

    Yes the fragility was so key back then, you nailed it. When I first heard this and he sang "I'll take a walk outside..." it just totally blew me away. I've heard it a million times now but it still kind of does.

      The Ego everything is so compressed nowadays. It’s like modern music producers want everything sound at the same volume throughout the whole song. Makes music sound so sterile and artificial with no human touch.

    It's almost a crime to interrupt this song... I've seen them live several times being the last in 2018 and they are still amazing. Eddie's voice is still there.

      @Jeff V well, I guess if anybody could make a career out of munbling words of a song, all of us should be famoud now.. I've caps locked the word RAW TALENT, because unlike many artists, Eddie does not depend on electronics to alter his voice or vocals on his recordings. It's not perfect, but it that damn good.

      @Jeff V Rather strained logic to dismiss him with only “he mumbles every word” with no discussion of anything else about his vocal ability, is it not? That “mumbling” cooperates perfectly with the music he performs with. It does not take long to observe his capacity in range, power, and distinctiveness, as people have long noted.

    He can still do everything! I never thought his voice would survive so well. One of the best vocalists of all time. He is not so vulnerable anymore and I think he learned some better techniques to save his voice. Love love love 💕

    There's an incredible video from 2008 of Pearl Jam covering The Who's "Love Reign O'er Me" that *definitely* shows how well Eddie's voice held up. He never lost the pain and expression that comes through in his singing, but it seems like he improved his control over the screamier stuff.

    I love Eddie Vedder so much. His voice is ridiculous. I feel like he has to work so hard to restrain himself or his massive voice will shake the world apart.

    I remember remember rewinding my Walkman over and over and over again listening to this one. Those feeling he was able to pump through the headphones to me in my times of distress hit me hard. Real hard. Great choice Beth. Rock on.

    Eddie is the man. When a legend in Chris Cornell listened to this still fresh and unwanting singer and said that he has to be in Temple of the Dog with him....that says a lot about Eddie's voice.

      Yesss! Eddie uses those pipes strongly in 'Jeremy'. There may be ppl with technically better voices, but imo, the passion and raw emotion Eddie displays when he performs, and as she mentioned, those little things he adds and ways he uses that voice make him a great vocalist. I'd love to see her reaction to his performance of 'Masters of War' at the Bob Dylan honoree ceremony in 92. Ed's my favorite artist. He's really been strongly influenced by the great 60s & 70s bands I love so much. All the grunge bands were.

    I love that you can see the moment she gets so wrapped in the emotion that she forgets to do any comentary, and every time she trys to start again he does something else awesome that steals her attention. This is truly one of the best live performances out there

    I remember recording this unplugged on my vhs in my tweens. I was obsessed with pearl jam and so in love with Eddie and his voice. All these years later this still gives me chills. So talented.

    I can’t hear this song without cracking emotionally. The pain in his voice, in his lyrics really digs into pain I’ve gone through, and I’m sure many other have gone through as well. He’s not just singing the song, it’s raw emotion just flooding out through his voice. While there are scores of sad songs out there with sad lyrics, sad melodies, and great performances, this one just hits like a sledgehammer to the chest.

    When Pearl Jam was boycotting Ticketmaster, they would play at really small bars, basically unannounced. I'll never forget this, this long haired dude in sunglasses that was sitting in the next table disappeared. And then I noticed woman after woman after woman being sorta magnetized to the stage -- it was that dude. It was Eddie Vedder -- those chics flocked to his voice like bees to honey, it was amazing to witness.
    And I have to say, he has the best voice I've ever heard.
