Lyrics:
As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
'cause if there's one thing that she don't need
it's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto
People, don't you understand
the child needs a helping hand
or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
are we too blind to see,
do we simply turn our heads
and look the other way
Well the world turns
and a hungry little boy with a runny nose
plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto
One of my favorite songs from Elvis❤❤
Mine too, almost made me cry the first time I heard it. Because truthfully as a people we really were Too Blind To See and too quick to Turn Our Heads And Look The Other Way.

my brothers and I just buried our old mummy today and this is the Elvis song she loved because she took in to our house and home loads of strangers and poor old ladies and mum always had a place at table for the stranger. us boys met heaps of angels going through to do what we couldn't understand but alluded to by mum wisdom.
My condolences my friend your mother sounds like a beautiful soul and i know the angels have a place set for her in heaven just the same as she had a place set for the people who needed it

Sun 7 April 2024: You know, it's been many years since I last heard this song, and hearing it again gave me goose-bumps, and my blood ran cold. It's one of Elvis' better songs and undeniably this can be very true of a lot of poor families in America. So glad to have listened to it again.
This is my favorite song of Elvis Presley. The profound meaning, the cycle of pain and suffering in the song is well expressed!

My mama shared his birthday.... She loved his music. She passed away on January 6th 2020 ...2 days shy of that shared birthday. I was born during a time in my Mama's life when things were not easy for her and daddy and somehow she always made certain I had clothes on my back and supper on the table. I watched her work two jobs for little pay and she managed. That woman was my best friend. I'm playing the song again and I hope you are singing along with me...RIP mama
Sorry for your loss.

this song is very beautiful. It brings us back to our childhood in the 1960's. Even if life was not easy, those were beautiful times. I had very kind parents who both passed away in 2013. I miss them a lot. Mariethe from France

I fell at the kings feet, just fantastic , people nail songs all through our lives, and he did this {{♡OHMYGOSH♡}}
This song is so sad, but it is still my favorite of Elvis's songs.
My baby is 33 now and homeless and stepdad so mean and son works triple digits heat all day saving money trying to protect himself and I ask for prayer. If you listen to Elvis you must know he was also king of all night gospel music to relax and he loved his mama--God bless you Elvis rip
33 years old is not a baby. Step dad realizes 33 is not a baby.... so, of course, he seems mean to you. It's time both you and your son grow up and find Jesus. Your son will take you to your grave early, if you don't let go. He's grown, you can't still carry him, it's about your life now, it's either your life or his life. I've seen many strong, smart women die from still trying to carry their grown sons, who have chosen to make poor choices, especially drugs and alcohol.... sons who wouldn't listen, die.... and after the mother dies, the sons get stronger and walk out a better life. You decide it's either you or him, and which one of you is better for the family or to clean up his mess, all these babies. You sound like that old fisty lady we buried at church a couple of years ago. Her ugly son looked so helpless and weak, he was hard to look at, she let him move back in with her and his step-dad, he wore her out, till she dropped dead. Old bitty came out of retirementIto work to take care of him. I spotted it right off and watched him suck the life out of her. She's dead, and her husband are dead... soon he was he's sporting around, trying to look good. No, you can't sit next to me... I got up and moved. It's you or him, all God ask you to do was carry him for is 9- months, you've carried him 396 months! Most likely you're dead, but if not, I serve you mail. Let him go to God

Elvis KNEW about suffering, pity, hurt and the downtrodden. I was very young when this played on my Dad's house radio. Powerful! Elvis rocks!!
Yes and he felt every word of this song!!
He performed it very well but he didn’t write the lyrics, Mac Davis did.
Yes he did
I grew up with Elvis. But he has two songs that are perfect. And still mean the same. In the ghetto is one. An absolute master of music. Never wrote a complete song himself but made every song that he sang something that was absolutely original and perfect!!!
Pray tell us what the other perfect song is!? Coz I love a lot more than just 2...
Elvis is pure perfection. Rest in peace, legend!
55 years later we still haven't listened to the Kings imploring words. Whole worlds heard them, few heeded them.
This song was the most influential Elvis ever made. No one has sung it with the right amount of feeling especially early in the song when he asks 'if we turn away' that question has so much conviction of who we really are
Well no one except eric cartman
can we appreciate that this is one of the best recordings ever in history. That left pan. That string tone. Them backing vocals. That smooth voice. This to a mixing engineer is a big colourful rainbow heaven
And this is only one of the many critically acclaimed recordings by the king. His critically acclaimed recordings are in multiple genres of music.
His soul depth and diversity remain unmatched.
As a mixing engineer, you would understand the iconic artistry of the king.
He, along with Ella Fitzgerald and frank Sinatra, remain unmatched in the music industry.
I read somewhere that Whitney Houston's mother was one of the backing vocalists to this song. I don't know how true it is. They did a great job still!

This was the perfect song to end “Elvis” (2022) with. Really sticks with me
I kept hoping the whole movie they’d show him playing it, because it’s my favorite Elvis song! Then the credits rolled and I clapped when I heard it playing. If Austin Butler doesn’t win an Oscar for that performance, I’d boycott the Academy! Some critics have been way too hard on this film, only because they’d rather hear themselves talk than actually witness a beautiful film.
Sadly they remixed it....

Elvis Presley Lyrics
"In The Ghetto"
As the snow flies
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin'
A poor little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
'Cause if there's one thing that she don't need
It's another hungry mouth to feed
In the ghetto
People, don't you understand
The child needs a helping hand
Or he'll grow to be an angry young man some day
Take a look at you and me,
Are we too blind to see?
Do we simply turn our heads and look the other way?
Well, the world turns
And a hungry little boy with a runny nose
Plays in the street as the cold wind blows
In the ghetto
And his hunger burns
So he starts to roam the streets at night
And he learns how to steal, and he learns how to fight
In the ghetto
Then one night in desperation
The young man breaks away
He buys a gun,
Steals a car,
Tries to run,
But he don't get far
And his mama cries
As a crowd gathers 'round an angry young man
Face down on the street with a gun in his hand
In the ghetto
And as her young man dies,
On a cold and gray Chicago mornin',
Another little baby child is born
In the ghetto
And his mama cries
A powerful song.
Still happening every day

True
By the time he sings "as her young man dies" Im usually in tears. thanks Elvis, thanks Mac Davis - a classic.
You're correct, Elvis sung the hell out of this song, but sadly a Black man got ripped-off. John W. Anderson wrote this song. He went to Mac Davis, because he knew Mac was a friend of Elvis. He told Mac that he had a hit song for Elvis and he would share the profits with Mac. Instead Mac Davis took the song to Elvis and said that he wrote it. If you want to compare the writing of this song to Anderson's other songs look for him under, John Kasondra Anderson or John W. Anderson. Or, look up the song 'Mose'.

I don't know how anyone else grew up, but the opening line "as the snow flies", and then on, I can just feel and picture everything.
It takes talent and heart to make a song about a violent man in the ghetto sound beautiful
WAS he violent? "He buys a gun, he steals car"?
love this song, my father used to sing me this song to sleep. the year was 1969. love you daddy
Thats so sweet, i love that for you(;
U made me cry
Aww, that's really beautiful and moving to read...
Elvis is forever the king.
I was about 14 years old when this song came out and I couldn't appreciate the significance of it then but it broke my heart and even now at 70 the lyrics are just as meaningful and heartbreaking
I have never been so emotional and felt empty about the hardship of the poor. This song is too painful to hear but i keep listening , have been for over 30 years. I have heard many including Jail House Rock, King Creole, etc. etc. but this song hit the nerves like never before.
My father loved Elvis, this was one of his favorite from the King RIP Dad, 15 years since he passed today.
The lyrics are beautiful , straight from the heart from a caring soul... Don’t turn away your cheek from children in need and give charity when you can !
The Saddest Part 1:55 he bought the gun legally but ends up lying face down on the street when he coulda joined Up like his neighbors to Fight for ukraine Independence
Also, pressure your politicians to do something about the homeless situation.
Charity can only go so far against a system designed to make and keep people poor.
55 years and this song is just as relevant as the day it was penned
More relevant imho.
REALLY????
@@chodeshadar18 Absolutely.
Yeah all the blacks killing eachother but claim BLM matter 🤔
He did so much for the black youth. Man before his time.
No mention of race in the song.
@@roberttyler1206 Doesn't need to be mentioned. The writer, Mac Davis, explained it quite clearly in many interviews.
@@TwistedQuestionMark exactly. Others assume it.
To hear him sing makes me miss him so much. This is a masterpiece
It’s his best
There will NEVER be another Elvis!
R.I.P to the writer of this fantastic song, The great Mac Davis.
If you click twice on the comment it gives it a like.
Elvis made him.
@@tony4534 HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!
Elvis made him.
@@tony4534 Elvis interpretava le canzoni, non le scriveva, c'è differenza tra il mestiere del cantante e quello del cantautore, lui era un performer, e come le cantava lui...
I remember listening to this beautiful song as a child all the way to French west Africa. Although I didn’t understand a thing, I knew it carried something deep and the melody expressed the mood of the story very well.
Now that I understand the lyrics, it’s even more beautiful. And sad. And actual.
