I've found that the hardest part is re-training my speaking voice. I have a very energetic, bubbly, loud personality and it is incredibly difficult to figure out how to express myself in a way that does not cause stress, pain , and tension in my speaking voice. It is actually been less stressful retrianing my singing voice. MTD is truly a learning process.

Hi Liz I have MTD and I didn’t know I had it until this year. Everyone thought I was crazy when I said there’s something with my voice. I’m so happy that you made this video, it feels like proof that it’s possible to overcome. I hope you see this comment so that I could potentially receive some additional guidance from you. Thanks Liz

Every time you post a video or I watch one of your vids it's like you are reading my journey and telling me what I need to here to keep pushing through. I appreciate not wanting to talk about the condition or identify with the condition. Since I have felt in a position where I feel I can start to separate myself from it as an identity I am actually doing a lot better as well. Again - means so much to know I'm not alone in the world - thank you

Liz, thank you so much for helping us all these years, although I joined MTD club only a few weeks ago.
Only 60 days passed since I lost my voice after laryngitis, and my ENT said I'd be better to stay silent for the next month, as no polyps or other bad things were discovered on the cords themselves,
cords are just slightly pink after the inflammation gone.
However, you suggest doing much of exercises to bring the voice back. While I understand that exercises should take place after this month is passed, there is still one thing that remains unclear before the next visit to my doctor. My problem is that cords are not closing too tight, and he said I got a hypofunctional dysphonia (diagnosed in Eastern Europe). Is this the same as MTD? As I remember, your case was based on your cords tightening too much, and mine case is just the opposite as cords cannot close well enough until I push my larynx for twangy help. Could you please advise if your exercises may be applicable in case my MTD symptom is just the non-closure of the cords (i now have bad tremolo in mixed voice), and not the over tension?
    Thank you!

Hey, it was C8 nerve damage because of a cervical spond. for me.
I watched your video 1.5 yrs ago when i had vocal issues, i could not even speak for 2 mins in a day.. and no doctor diagnosed it correctly for these 1.5 yrs.. i dont know if it was MTD.. i feel pain in the Digastric muscles under the right jaw. i started with treatment for Acid reflux and Stress.. but i never believed that i had these issues. Situation was improving slowly and i could speak for 15 mins at a stretch with manageable discomfort. Eventually, just before a month or so, i went to see a Neuro surgeon and he asked me to fo some Neck MRIs, which revealed a bulg in the C7 disc causing a pressure on the C8 nerve.. 3 weeks medication for nerve damage has curtailed my voice pain to last 10% and I believe it will Go away in coming weeks. Now i can speak for much longer and experience pain only if I speak loud or for too long . I really hope that your problem also goes away and you do not stuck in the wrong medication for long..

Thank you again for your videos. My condition has been strange and unpredictable. I find that my voice holds up better singing than it does talking. In fact sometimes after singing, it's almost like my throat feels loosened up and better (but sometimes it feels worse.) But if I talk to a friend for 15 minutes, I am done for the day. I really don't get it.

Thank you for sharing , I was so lost when I first got diagnosed . Our stories are very similar in the fact that I got diagnosed with acid reflux ,allergies all kinds of other stuff before they found out it was muscle tension dysphonia. Have you noticed during your pms / period does it seem to act up more ? For me , I have noticed it tends to act up during that time .

    • @LizBills
      @LizBills  2 года назад +1

Crazy how similar many of our journeys are! I just started getting my period again after 20 years on the pill where I was very disconnected from my cycle. So if I’m being honest I am a newbie at understanding the connections between my period and my well-being. I have made the connection that I feel sick and more sensitive and even my stomach is affected when I’m on my period so I’m not surprised at all if you feel like your symptoms are acting up more on your period! Perhaps mine do too, ill watch for it this time around.

@@LizBills omg yeah my stomach acts up around the same time too . My story on that , Man …. So , I knew my stomach had something going on three years ago . I think it was just me being sensitive to like nuts or something. It would blow up and hurt sometimes after I ate certain things . Anyways just like you , when I started to go see the Dr trying to find out why my throat was feeling the way it did , feeling tight , hurting ,a lot of mucus and I lost my voice on and off . the Dr told me it was acid reflux or allergies. I seen all the specialists , allergies, Ent, Gastro . My primary Dr gave me acid reflux medicine , I got so sick after taking the pills that water made me sick or even just moving to much . I stopped taking the pills right away . My stomach was so sensitive and hot all the time and then I started getting acid reflux. The mtd and the stomach issue caused me to lose hella weight . I use to be very toned before and I went to the gym all the time . I got so skinny like a stick when I got hit with everything.I was scared to eat because the mtd made me feel like I was choking and then scared because my stomach would get sick . I was a mess , I’m trying to get back in shape now but working out I have noticed makes my mtd act up a little,so I have to go slow . I can’t do weights anymore ☹️ Now I just get sick if I eat certain things or get stressed out , or pms with my mtd and stomach upset . It took two years for me to get here . I just take vitamins and probiotics every day and watch what I eat and try not to get stressed out . I was diagnosed with anxiety disorder when I was 19 , I’m now 43 . I overcame it with behavior modification in my 20’s . I have had set backs a few times and going back to my program always helps to pull me out of it . When I got hit with this it triggered my anxiety so it was a battle with mtd, anxiety and stomach issues . The gastro Dr didn’t find anything wrong he just said I’m probably just sensitive to food now that I’m older . So all this makes me believe that I’m just a real sensitive person and my body goes nuts when I’m off balance or something. So yes getting the stress under control is a big one ! I believe like you we can live a great life , although we may have some symptoms that aren’t lovely at least we have a lot of moments now that are ❤️ Thanks again for your videos , They really do help . MTD is something no one I know has heard of. I do take speech and I’m not even a singer . I’m sorry if I wrote to much but man I could go on for days .

I have this. It’s like the more I sing the tighter my throat gets. I put this down to tension in my throat and the muscles of my neck.
    Two factors.
1)Recently released a trauma in my neck of birth trauma complete with scars around neck of the cord.
    2) Breathing in the upper chest ( stress) uses the sterna mastoid muscles ( pull chest up). These are secondary muscles. They become overused and strained.
These problems with me have caused this chronic condition.
Now researching how to relax these muscles.
My sterna mastoid muscles are like rock. They have been overused and also due to poor posture have had to support head.

I have chronic MTD for almost 8 years now. I got scoped many times, they couldn't find anything, been to numerous SP's but no one has helped me and everybody gave up on me. My last SP said I have MTD because of chronic emotional stress and she now also is giving up on me because the exercises don't work/hurt immediately.
It makes sense my MTD is from chronic stress, because before I got this condition, I was ALREADY in extreme chronic stress for 7 years already. The last 8 years I lived with MTD but those 8 years were full of extreme stress. So that's 15 years of chronic stress in total..
Im slowly recovering the past 6 months from all the chronic stress, but using my voice still hurts immediately.
What should I do know? Find another speech pathologist? Because everyone refuses me because the exercises they give me don't work. Or should I just wait until my body recovers out of itself from all the chronic stress and just wait on it?
SP can feel there's tension in my throat muscles and neck muscles and extreme tension in my SCM muscle but she doesn't even want to massage anymore because nothing works and I still have immediate pain when speaking, also after the massage..

I got these symptoms but instead of pain in my throat it’s pain in my stomach, like my muscles in my stomach get super tight and I gotta prepare to talk with it and for that reason when people talk to me sometimes I delay before I speak bc my muscles in my stomach are tightening up trying to get prepared to speak, also it stops me from speaking louder a lot of times and makes me run out of breath quick from talking, what do I do? This has been happening since I was little and it keep getting worse, not really pain when swallowing tho, do u think I have this? I have the symptoms that I said super severe, ppl always say “put some base in ur voice” but I literally can’t, the muscles in my stomach won’t let me at times

I went to a gastroenterologist a couple months ago, and when she saw my throat, she mentioned it was like "scratched", but she said it didn't seem like it was scratched due to acid reflux.
    Could it be MTD?
    Can MTD cause this?

Your sternocleidomastoid muscle is contacting your throat. Speech terapists will blame you for something that's 100% not your fault. Botox shots can eliminate your condition.
