Your videos helped me so much , I was diagnosed 4 years ago. I lost my voice completely and I’m not a singer. I did speech therapy. I do have anxiety disorder and I know what you mean 100 about it acting up when you’re having anxiety. I’m so much better now but my voice and throat aren’t the same and the MTD does act up from time to time . Tm thankful for your videos .

I have recently come across your channel and I just wanted to say thank you so much for sharing your story and advice. I'm a vocalist and pretty sure I'm suffering with MTD, (just had a scope with an ENT which showed nothing), but still on the path for a clear diagnosis.
It can take a while to realise how much mental health can affect the voice and body but after having suffered from severe anxiety for most of my life it's becoming a bit clearer now.
Thank you for being so inspirational and giving people hope 🌼

I am so in it right now and was happy to see this video-somehow I missed it earlier. I was finally diagnosed with small intestinal bacterial overgrowth after 2 years and was treated with antibiotics a month ago and now my reflux is GONE. Which is amazing. Mine for sure was triggered by severe reflux (having to compensate for laryngospasms and swelling and creating incorrect muscle patterns) and made worse because Kaiser Permanente wouldn't test for SIBO and kept giving me antacids and encouraging a low acid diet, which only allowed the bacteria to thrive.
After having finished the antibiotics and the methane fumes stopped coming up into my throat, I started to feel so much hope but then the MTD came back with a vengeance because now the muscle tension is often involuntarily and seemingly anything can trigger it--a weird sleeping position, natural stimulants like chocolate, the smoke from the recent fires .... and then the stress that occurs when I feel everything locking up and speaking becomes effortful again.
I also make meditation and yoga a daily practice and it is immensely helpful.
MTD is often classified as a mindbody connection issue similar to fibromyalgia and PTSD in the sense that all are caused by the brain's response to long term stress. I had severe anxiety my entire life and now it's just a habit. I know that burning pain in the muscles all too well. Fortunately I'm very Zen these days, but sometimes those brain signals just fire off and the only solution is rest.
SO glad you are feeling so recovered most of the time. Some days I think, "This will never go away and I just have to accept it." Today my neck and traps were like rocks and I couldn't do any voice work and I said, "I'm just done." But I know it's not true. Thank you for providing hope.

Thanks for your videos. I'm not a singer but am a teacher. Emergency abdominal surgery a month ago left me with MTD (from trauma from intubation). Thankfully my ENT was great and diagnosed it right away. I'm now working with a voice therapist. It's nice to know someone else felt all the things I'm feeling and has got through it. Thank you for sharing your story and what worked for you.

You're bloody awesome Liz, soooo good this vid! Thanks a mil for sharing! Hadn't come across MTD until I got fed up a couple months ago & your vids popped up... we may be a bit slower here in Australia :) I've a very similar story, polyps, burning voice/neck, the failed theories (acid reflux, poor/confusing vocal therapy etc etc), failed surgery even...
I love your wholistic approach, the yoga/relaxing part really stopped me in my tracks. I'm in IT so lots of hunched over lappy time.
Something further thats been helping me: Ever since watching this, I've been consciously relaxing my shoulders to sink into my bed for a few mins each morning/night (without a pillow so the neck flattens right out)... there couldn't be a simpler exercise really. Heaps of lil cracks and a real satisfying shoulder/neck muscle release. Then I try to incorporate the voicebox into this release, opening the mouth and letting the tongue drop (the "dead bloke in a bed" exercise), tilting the head slightly on each side and holding. It may feel more like a stretch than a release when it's really tight. You may benefit from a gentle massage on the stiff side to encourage a few lil gentle cracks.
I've been holding off replying here at the risk of jinxing it, but its really been working wonders, and might hopefully help others or yourself too...
So THANKYOU! i wish you a tension free life and im thrilled u've overcome it enough to continue singing!
Oh and ur spontaneous bursts of singing the section digits really make this vid! haha :)

I have literally been struggling with this for months without realizing what it was. My name is Vince, and I’m also a singer/songwriter. I actually bought this online singing course by Ken Tamplin a while back and was pretty consistent with it for two months and had zero throat pain or tension whatsoever. I ended up stop doing it because I got pretty busy doing college applications (tons of stress lol). But recently, after several months I started to practice again and after a few weeks I was seeing great progress before suddenly, i felt this ache from the right side of my throat. That ache then encompassed the entirety of my throat and I went to the ER cause it felt like I couldn’t breathe sometimes. I saw an ENT and they gave me a diagnosis of having some sort of throat infection and I was prescribed antibiotics that i know did not work. Heck the only thing that worked was to not use my voice at all, which I did. It was super demoralizing cause I was so motivated to practice but knew if I did it, my throat would just hurt.
So yeah, I stopped singing for a month then my throat seemed to be fine. But now that I’ve started singing again, Im feeling that throat soreness/tension and I now trying to really figure out whats causing it and how to fix it. I’ve been practicing vocal technique such as my diaphragm support, gargling salt water, eating honey, pretty much every home remedy I found online. It’s helped a little bit but I still feel the tension in my throat. Luckily, I found your channel! I’m going to see another ENT and tell them I think I have MTD so hopefully I can get referred to a speech therapist. I’m also going to get a vocal teacher because theres only so much and online singing course can do. Anyways, hopefully I can figure this out-Thank you so much for posting this video-its a literally gold mine. Its actually given me hope that I can change my situation and finally sing cause at the end end of the day, I’m just trying to have a good voice 😅. So once again, Thanks!
Fun fact: I’m literally moving to Boston this fall for college lmao

@@tapangasoul6928 Yea I totally feel that! I haven't been taking any medicine per se, i've mostly been doing a mixture of voice therapy, massage therapy, singing work with a trained alexander teacher, chiropractic care, and physical therapy. All those elements combine have kind of helped me get where I am today. Best exercises would probably be shoulder rolls and neck rolls but it depends on the day. Some days when I'm especially tense I just hold back on singing/talking and try to easy the tension instead. It is a tough hand we have been dealt with a condition like this but all we can do is play the cards we were handed and keep moving forward :)

i've been dealing with MTD for the past few months for the second time after first having it for a couple of years back in 2014/2015. this time is killing me because an ENT won't scope me cos of covid times and I just want to know it's definitely that again. This time instead of ENT on the NHS I've been seeing a vocal coach over Zoom who's also helped people with MTD. Learning how to deal with it as a singer rather than generally with the ENT is so much more eye opening and made me realise that the first time I really didn't get the full picture! I'm really trying to stay hopeful and it's only now after all these years that i've thought to youtube it so I don't feel so alone. Thank you for your videos!

Hey Liz! Your videos helped me finally understand that there is something wrong with my voice, as opposed to what all the doctors told me. I have issues with vocal tension since several years and all the doctors I went to didn't find anything or just didnt make the effort to check my throat and larynx at all. A few months ago, when I discovered your videos, I didnt want to put up with those excuses of diagnosis and I decided to see a ENT vocal specialist. Finally I got diagnosed with vocal cord hyperfunction, which is very similar to MTD. I am now 5 weeks into speech therapy and the results are already amazing. My therapist is amazing and after my first session I had to cry because finally my vocal journey was going somewhere. For the first time in forever I feel like I can actually feel when my body doesnt like the way I use my voice. I know it is still gonna be a long way until I can sing properly again, but I am filled with so much hope and excitement for the future. If it weren't for your videos, I would probably still be sitting around depressed complaining why my voice is not working. Thank you so much! :)

  • @jordancooperlalala
    @jordancooperlalala 3 года назад +3

Thanks for your videos. I commented on another one mentioning I was diagnosed with hypersensitive larynx/esophagus, which to my eyes seems identical to everything you are describing and it even got done with the same scope test looking at my vocal cords, and I was also prescribed weekly vocal therapy session too exactly as you describe (trills, bubbles, etc.)
I just wanted to comment to say I had the exact same experience with misdiagnosis. So you may not believe this but after complaining of losing my voice to my ENT, over 10 months I had to go to EIGHT different GIs, one ENT, one urgent care ("i have no idea what is wrong with you") and finally, one "voice and swallowing" doctor to finally get my hypersensitivity diagnosis. Every GI I saw was 100% confident I had acid reflux, put me on medications that really messed me up. I got the wedge pillow, radically changed my diet (I did lose weight which was nice), and tried dozens of natural supplements, all that did nothing as my voice and throat got worse every day. As I got worse and worse and desperately sought more doctors, more testing, and was just told I had anxiety, acid reflux, GERD, etc, etc. To be fair, my endoscopy did show bad esophagitis, which I still don't understand.
But finally the last doctor, the voice expert, who I had to personally google and seek out (meaning: NOT ONE GI DOCTOR recommended I see someone like this), put the scope in, saw my vocal cords dysfunction and put me on the right path (I think.) I also finally got a GI to give me the BRAVO pH test, where they insert some sort of receiver into your throat for 2 days and measure acid. My results last week came back NEGATIVE...No abnormal acid at all.
I'm still not sure if esophagitis is from acid, hypersensitivity or what. I don't know if the acid triggers hypersensitivity responses but in my experience, my throat seems to get really bad if I talk or have some sort of stressful day where I yell or something. I have tried so many diet changes and there's no real pattern: sometimes I feel better after acid foods, sometimes worse, sometimes worse after non-acidic foods, etc. Tonight my voice is REALLY bad and I had some tomato sauce and I still have the instinct of wondering if it's the sauce that made it worse or not, despite doctors testing me and telling me I have no issue with acid.
One doctor wanted to put me on Amitriptyline but I am too terrified to take it, as I always react horribly to most medication.
To end positively, since starting voice therapy a month ago I think I have been on an upward trend. I have ups and downs and good and bad days but the overall feeling has been a lot better than the past 10 months. No burning feeling in my throat, no actually losing my voice totally, just some slight ups and downs. So I think something is actually working.
Anyway, just thought you'd find this interesting...perhaps not. Thanks for your channel!

Botox has helped but it will not stop the tension from rising back and tight feeling in my voice box. I am doing vocal therapy now. Practicing my airways and voiced and voiceless sounds. Honestly, the thing that stuck with me most in my recovery was understanding that singing is more speaking than melodic phonation mechanically speaking. Melodic sounds come from intrinsic tension, but it has to be subtle and intentionally practiced, and ingrained through muscle memory so it shouldn't be something you're doing at all when recovering. Like AT ALL. When I was told by my voice therapist to act in rhythm with the song instead of singing it, then add pitch I was able to see exactly where I was adding the tension subconsciously where it wasn't needed. If I don't need the tension to increase my volume and produce better tone quality when I'm speaking I don't need it when I'm singing. I just need more air traveling through the vocal folds points of contact and the tension required to close and maintain laryngeal posture against the extra sudden expulsion of air. required for high notes. Another thing that I needed to utilize this properly was to master tongue posture and soft pallet mobility as these things influence not only the resonance in your mouth but can block off nasal or chest resonance when not maintained properly causing you to push with your throat more than necessary once again, using your resonance cavities properly with propper annunciation, tongue posture, and soft pallet control allow you to use less air to attain the same volume with less strain, which is another reason we feel the need to add extra support in the laryngeal region, to avoid excessive vibration when we anticipate strain due to using far too much air to produce a sound. The strain tension just travels all up your nack into your shoulder and jaw and you basically sing and sing until you burn out and choke out if you don't get on top of it properly.
Also MTD isn't a diagnosis, it's a categorical term used to communicate dysphonic vocalization or the illusion of vocal pathology due to excessive intrinsic muscle tension. For this to be a condition, there'd be more than the symptoms on their own. It only organizes the symptoms and physical characteristics there's no explanation as to why it's happening within the assigned category. For example, MTD is a set of symptoms that can be caused by anxiety, PTSD< Autism, or really a whole host of psychological reasons as well as physical illness. The diagnosis would be for example, I have autism and as a symptom of comorbid anxiety I have developed Muscle tension dysphonia symptoms"

Hey Liz. Thanks for these videos. It's interesting to hear you talk more about your mental health. I'm sorry you've struggled so much, it's horrendous to live with it all the time. I had panic attacks as a kid, and then severe chronic anxiety and insomnia, leading me to feel I couldn't go on. Then at the peak of all that, my voice began to hurt out of nowhere, extreme burning and tension, and I couldn't use my voice at all. I think I've mentioned it in a comment on your channel ages ago. It's been 4 years now, and I still can never use my voice without pain, and mostly only speak a few minutes a day. It's been debilitating and I feel its hard to live an enjoyable life. It's inspiring to see you have made so much progress and can actually speak and sing without pain.
I do believe it all stems from emotional stuff, which is why I really believe the TMS approach. There's a recent podcast called 'Tell me about your pain' by people who followed on from John Sarnos ideas. I think you'd get a lot out of the podcast, look it up.
Also for anxiety, I have found an Australian doctor from the 60s called Dr Claire Weekes to be amazing. Check out her books on amazon and the reviews. Many people say it saved their lives. Its very straightforward. I will email you her audiobook if you like

I didn't know what was going on until I saw Liz's video on MTD. However, I do have GERD ( acid reflux) & MTD (muscle tension dysphonia). For my acid reflux, I went to a GI doctor for an endoscopy (They put a tube down your throat and into your stomach when your asleep) to see if there were any underlying issues that might be serious. It showed that I do have a lot of acid reflux. So for my acid reflux I take 10mg of Omeprazole, I never over eat, I drink about 48oz of water daily, and I've cut out all food & drinks that cause my reflux to flare up including caffenaited coffee. For my MTD, I message my neck and shoulders (that's where I keep all my tension from stress) the muscles in the neck & shoulders help the larynx to move freely when they are loose. I message them until they a very loose & free of tension especially if I'm about to perform or record vocals. I hope this helps you. I know this is a very discouraging time for you but it will get better. I will do almost anything to keep my voice and continue to express myself creatively through music. If I have to make some lifestyle changes to do it, I will. I pray that you will get relief soon, my friend! Bless you!

@@KevinQualls @Kevin Qualls I have mild reflux, but I have lots of tension all around my larynx, neck, and shoulders. I just dont know how exactly to get rid of that my friend. This is actually so bad, and like you said very discouraging, 20 minutes ago I had to tell my choir director that I couldn't record my part because I'm in total discomfort with my throat right now (every time I have to record for the choir. I say the same thing. Because it just feels so tiring and I can barely talk man). When I swallow I feel like I'm swallowing a big pill, under my chin its so tense and very discomforting just everywhere. I dont know what exercises to do besides the ones that Liz has shown, but its just even some of these straw exercises are uncomfortable because of the extreme tension i have.

Make sure that you keep searching for the right speech therapist if you have not already ♥️ stay curious and open and keep trying new things that will help your body relax. There’s so much to explore :-) I would start with meditation and yoga and therapy. However not all at once, just do what works for you my friend. Go slow be patient and trust trust trust. Like, I'm a confident person but I get socially shy and I feel like MTD could be related to this, kinda like a restriction of the spontaneous emotions, a need to control ourselves in front of others, the opposite of Expansion. Hi, Liz, I'm pretty sure lots of people will benefit from your video and your insights. Just wanted to point out that the pain is always real but it might be caused by several different reasons, Dr. Sarno used to make this very clear with his patients, they were not crazy, but maybe their pain wasn't caused by a severe physical damage as most feeling it would be lead to believe instinctively. I myself went through it and became aware of the possibility to stop the pain by pure will which made no sense to me until I experienced it. Of course when I came up with MTD I tried to apply the same thought process and ended up spitting blood so that made me reevaluate the situation again.

Alberto Mauiztic yes I agree that pain is always real as well, I was trying to explain the dr sarno idea but I don’t know if I did a good job haha... I meant to say mb that pain is real but could be a neurologically learned pathway.
