Yeah, but the issue was also in fuel and tire management. The next year (or so), they allow more fuel in cars to avoid managing it while racing, and tires' management seem to be more reliable today. In 2021, I don't think Ricciardo would have been able to defend its first place. But I'm maybe wrong.

      Realistic changes :
Slightly sharpen turn 10: Slightly sharpen the track and remove part of the concrete barrier to widen the track. These changes willi ncrease the chances of overtaking into the chicane. Humans have the ability to do that, right?
Make turns 15-16 faster: Make them faster, kinda like turns 13-14 so that cars can carry more speed into rascasse and perhaps have a chance of diving it up the inside
Make the last corner faster: The reason why the last corner is narrow is because of a literal bus stop and pedestrian walkway. Simply clear the pedestrian walkway and bus stop for the race and make it a flat-out corner so that cars can carry more speed onto the pit straight and have a better chance of overtaking into turn 1. For ease of access, a temporary bridge could be built like those around the track

    • @TomCastellani
      @TomCastellani 3 года назад +2

I was going to suggest some sort of a bridge-based-Motegi-style-figure-eight until I reached the end of the video. But yes. Creating more real estate by either extending Monaco into the sea or building upwards - somehow - are the only options I can see.

Yep. And places like Sochi don't have the 'challenge' and 'spectacle' excuses either. You'd keep Monaco over at least half a dozen others on the current calendar.
Even if you could tweak the track to squeeze out a bit more overtaking, by nature it's never likely to be enough to meet the standards people expect - the trick is to get them to not feel too bothered about it.

There is land reclamation planned in Monaco in the next 5 years called Le Portier which is seemingly the best opportunity to change up the track a bit. Pretty much everywhere else is already built on but this new area is a fresh slate of land and could allow for a new area of track between the hairpin and the tunnel. Maybe even allowing for a much longer run into the tunnel, making passing much more possible.

    1) Remove the angled kerb at Ste Devoteso that the edge of the track proper follows the edge of the pit lane.
    2) Remove the Nouvelle Chicane and carry on along Avenue JFK rather than along the quayside. (If they could remove the trees between Avenue JFK and the quayside, the whole width of both could be used as the straight here).
    3) Reclaim part of the NW corner of the harbour to create a new Tabac connecting Avenue JFK directly to the track in front of the swimming pool.
    4) Reverse the stands between the swimming pool exit and Rascasse so that the track runs directly along the water's edge along this stretch.
Changes 2-4 would create a much faster, more flowing second half of the circuit with more passing opportunities.

Alternatively or additionally, remove (i.e. make removable) all street furniture between JFK and the current quai des etats-unis to make that straight double-width.

I'm surprised nobody came up with this, but they could just move the Nouvelle chicane 200m down the road with no issues. Put a DRS zone after the tunnel bend; at the nouvelle chicane cars would just go straight (following the old FE layout in reverse); 200m later, before the road starts going uphill, you could put a new chicane, rejoining the current track
If they felt really brave they could follow Avenue Kennedy until Tabac gaining another 60m of straight, but then they'd have to deal with a 2m drop from there to the rest of the track. Difficult, not impossible either

These changes can be done to make it interesting!!!
1.Make the exit out of turn 8 go out in the sea towards the left and make a hairpin towards the tunnel. This sea straight will stretch and merge to the middle of the tunnel and not its mouth (cutting atleast the first 100ft.of the tunnel )creating a straight..
    2. By doing that you essentially make the tunnel and the extended sea section a long straight , add DRS to this....
3.Remove or make the turn 10 chicane less 'chicany', or widen the damn road for a 'brake pass' chance....

    Here's an idea:
1996's edition of the Monaco GP is highly regarded because the track was wet and only 3 cars made it to the end. The rest all either crashed out or had mechanical problems.
While car reliability has improved, we can still make the race more interesting by dousing the track in water in case rain doesn't show up. They already do this for pre-season testing at Catalunya, so just bring the equipment out to Monaco. Couple that with changing it to a night race and I think there's a recipe for success that's feasible as it doesn't require layout changes.
The issues would of course be getting the FIA on board with wetting the track, making it more dangerous, for the sake of entertainment. That and changing the race start time, which would also put a damper on the whole "Greatest Weekend in Motorsports" with American fans getting the Monaco GP in the morning, the Indy 500 in the afternoon, and the Coca-Cola 600 in the evening.

They always seem to be the name of a sponsor/the track itself and then the number of miles in the race (pretty sure that's what the numbers mean, but I don't have any evidence to support that.) There's the Daytona 500, the Geico 500, even a Coke Zero Sugar 400... I guess if you're on a diet and the Coca-Cola 600 is too much sugar for you? It's basically NASCAR's "thing," similar to how Formula One has "[insert location] Grand Prix."

There would be a hard breaking point at the end of the tunnel now which could be a option to overtake.

They can implement an additional faster chicane or just a straight road next to the nouvelle chicane, that drivers that are within 0.5 -1 second of the car in front gets to drive through. Kind of a DRS, just as a faster overtaking road. That way if you have gained enough on the car in front, you get past them when they have to drive the chicane. This will make for a lot of exciting strategy moves close to the end of the race. Also a great way to undercut an opponent by flying through the chicane, and hoping/planning that they wont have an overtake opportunity the lap you are pitting.

The idea at 4:00 is the only suggestion that could be feasibly turned into a real solution. If you extend the pier (at the bottom of the picture) far into the water so the straight is both long and wide enough, then put a hairpin at the end to make the cars come back in the other direction too - rejoining the original layout somewhere near Rascasse - you end up with 2 long DRS zones in quick succession. It would certainly solve the overtaking problem, there's more than enough space to build it, and I don't know of any technological obstacles that would make it impossible (see the artificial islands in Dubai). It would cost an insane amount of money of course.

I've been seeing a lot of sentiments to drop Monaco over the past few years, but I don't think people realize that Monaco would've been dropped about a decade ago. People need to realize that Monaco isn't on the calendar purely because of merit, it's on there because of its history and the glam of, "Formula 1 racing on the streets of Monte Carlo." I get that there are many circuits that have more history that is more relevant to motorsports and Formula 1, and perhaps a lot of people think that historical significance and nostalgia shouldn't be the deciding factors as to whether a circuit gets kept. But Monaco is a lot more than that, the allure of F1 racing in Monaco is something that even non-motorsports fans get perked up about. This race has reached almost mythical heights, and most of the drivers really look forward to driving in Monaco. I get that it's a procession, but there is a lot that can be appreciated about Monaco. I for one sorely missed it when it got canceled last year.

Here’s an unorthodox but interesting take: take Monaco out of the traditional calendar, have it as a pure sprint weekend. A bonus race if you will. 8 points to the winner and so on or however you want to go about it. You have your standard free practices, however, quali doesn’t determine your grid position, rather it determines which 10 cars enter Sundays sprint. Here’s the kicker, Sundays sprint would be quali rules. No start position, no 20 cars barrelling into turn 1, send your car out any time in the time period, fastest lap at the end wins. It keeps Monaco in the calendar while making it more exciting than 72 formation laps of a sunday

On Saturday you have the normal qualifying (Q1, Q2 and Q3). On Sunday you start with a single lap qualifiying race in which the cars start in the reverse order of how they qualified on Saturday, to give the advantage of the improved track to those who qualified better. Through this race against the clock, the starting positions for a Sprint Race (with mandatory tire change) are determined. In this way we would have two very intense classifications and a short race in which, after all, almost everything is decided at the beginning of the race and in the pits.

    1. Change the Nouvelle Chicane to allow for more aggressive lunges (there are many attempts which simply fail, since you can't lunge properly)
    2. Use the space in the marina area better - wider track, little different layout (mainly pool section) - reduce the size of the grand stands if needed.
    3. relocate the "La Rascasse" Bar or make it smaller to allow for a wider "La Rascasse Turn"
    4. Relocate the Fangio Statue and make the greenery temporary/removable - use the new space for a decent turn 18/19 (wider, not a chicane turn), to allow more speed and maybe even some drs overtakes on the main straight
