I was a kart racer at the young age of 5 and while I was racing my a** off my parents having been spending for all the expenses. I only ever found out after I quit since the instructor started focusing on his son and not me and this older kid since me and this other kid was basically paying this guy to not pay attention and train us. So I quit I basically never thought about racing but I still had the skills but slowly fading. Me and my parents started talking about it last night and they said that they were also dreaming about me becoming a F1 champion while I used to kart race, cause I really had my heart set to becoming one, so it literally broke my heart to give up racing, my parents told me that becoming a racer was to pay to become one not skill. So basically I had to pay to become a F1 racer, and I know that putting my parents through that isn't worth it.

Well judging by the fact that the game costs around $50 and that an average console, let's say an xbox series x or ps5, costs about $600 and add a wheel for $300 (controller is bloody difficult), you can't be that poor. And if you were using a PC, you'd have to have a gaming PC that costs upwards of $1000 let alone a wheel or even a controller. But I get your point. Rich, kids who don't want to do work can now experience what they couldn't before.

Maybe you got a chance in GTE/GT3? GTE/GT3 are generally more accessible. The teams are not always big brands where you have to go through hell to get a job as an engineer with them. Yeah, while getting in those teams as an engineer will probably prove to be quite difficult, it's still realistic-difficult.
That said, you probably would need to live in Europe, as there's where most GT championships happen. You want to be where the teams are at.
Or, maybe, you can get your degree and be lucky enough to get a job with a brand; becoming an engineer working at Porsche, or BMW, etc., isn't exactly impossible, just kinda hard. Then you work your way up to/towards to the racing department, where you will be helping to design the racing counterparts of road cars that brands sell to teams. Maybe if you become an experienced enough senior engineer, you can propose a racing project to your higher ups, and if they greenlight it, then you are the commander in chief of a racing engineering design team.
There's also other engineering teams not realted to brands that focus specifically on modifying street legal road cars for making them compliant with FIA rules for GTE/GT3/GT4 races. Not as common, but that's another shot you have at getting into some form of racing.
Me personally, i think anything GT-related is way better and way more exciting than F1. The races are more unpredictable, is way, way more accesible, and the difference between cars is much, much more, wich again, makes the races more entertaining, and really puts drivers skills to test; in GT3, for example, is where i think the skill between drivers is the most noticeable, as not everyone has practically the same car.

      My personal take:
Used to. I signed a contract in 2018 for the following season. I didn’t own the car, I rented it from the team for that season. They were able to use that car for other tests that I didn’t know of and so the entire car started to become really slow as the season progressed. Both bottom end and top end speed was below-par (I was never passed into a corner, only on the straights). From my previous karting season, I had talent and speed but I couldn’t translate it into the car. It was very uncomfortable to drive the car because I had to get my seat redone and I was denied pedal extensions (I’m 6 feet). I only scored 1 point (the USF4 points are the same as F1) and usually averaged a qualification position of 15th.
      The car:
I did 3 weekends worth of racing. About 9 races because each race weekend had 3 races. Without talking about the team tuned the car, the feeling of driving a F4 car is lots of fun. Slick tires (about 235s in the rear and 185s in the front) and no power steering meant it was mostly mechanical grip with good aero grip.
      Financially:
Like I said before, the season was $180K USD. 6 races weekends so about $30K for a race weekend. Totally a ripoff. It was horrible to get these results and since my dad and I barely had any sponsors, I couldn’t put my father through that. There was favouritism in the team and the cars were so horribly controlled, the team decided to cheat their way to their wins in 2020. They were banned for that year. There are teams which give you some fighting chance for half that cost. I only did half the season so my father only paid $90K.
      My personal thoughts:
Don’t go in F4 if you’re not financially ready. I cannot stress that enough. If money isn’t a problem, buy the car and test it yourself (like a kart, it’s all your equipment). Most young talents do about a year of testing before they decide to race in the series. Make sure the contract is in your favour and always keep an eye on what changes during the weekend. Get every penny out of the weekend.

It's extremely likely that we haven't seen the best racing the world has to offer cause the barrier to entry is so high. Take a sport like football, you can fairly certainly say that Messi/CR7 etc are the best in the world and that there is no one around the world more talented and hard working. All you need to practice is a ball, the barrier to entry for competing in football is as low as it can get which is why it's so competitive. Assuming these crazy initial costs/processes continue, we will likely never see the absolute best talent in F1 which is a shame

@Hot Rod Hamilton doesn't come from a rich family. His dad had several jobs working his ass off so he could race karts. And because of his talent he found sponsors that supported his career. He's also black, which is extremely uncommon in the racing scene, especially at the time he was coming up. This video makes it seem all you need is rich parents, and that is not true at all. Look at Sergio Perez, he's from Mexico and also a poor family, but because of his talent he got sponsored by Carlos Slim. Josh really should have made it more clear it's more often than not sponsors that pay the money, not the parents.
