This is a ballad by Bálint Balassi, or Balassi Bálint in Hungarian, written in the 1500s. It was written in form of a prayer, as Balassi is known as one of the greatest religious poets in the Hungarian language to date.
We remember the brave Hungarians who fought to stop the Turkish onslaught.
PLEASE no ethic conflicts in my comments section. This is not the early part of the 20th century, the time for ethnic onlaught has passed. We are all Catholics, and if you are not... Why even bother to comment?

You should consider doing "Boldogasszony anyánk" as well, it's one of the oldest hungarian hymns out there and its about our mother Mary. I'm Romanian and I still think Hungarian sounds pretty cool.
Granted, I can't understand anything of what they say but it's a nice language when I'm not the one who's forced to speak it.

Hungarian songs are very underrated
Bálint Balassi was originally from a noble Hungarian Calvinist family but he converted to the Catholic faith.
His conversion led him to write religious poems such as this song which shows that he held a strong devotion to the faith.
i think you mixed up 2 different Ballasi Bálints, infact these religious poems are often emphasized as very protestant, hence they are written in hungarian rather then latin.
@@mr.montezuma7903 I mean, he converted in 1586 and began to write religious poems and war songs before his death in 1594. Before that he mostly wrote erotic poetry. The fact that it is in Hungarian language doesn’t mean that it was protestant. He was actually well acquainted with the Jesuits who had begun the counterreformation in Hungary during this period. The Jesuits had begun to preach in Hungarian rather than Latin in order to bring the populace back to the faith that Saint Stephen held.
@@Gedeonus I still do think these poems reflect protestant spirit more then catholic, his conversion was more a political matter then religious one, since the turks favoured calvinists over other denominations (since calvinisms views on idoltary are similar to that of the muslims) and quite obviously he wouldn't want to be associated with ottoman friendly groups.
@@mr.montezuma7903 Well thats your opinion. I don’t see a protestant spirit but rather a chivalrous spirit in this song. In his education growing up he held an admiration for all things related to chivalry.
If he was a secret calvinist, why didn’t he convert back while he was dying of his wounds after battle? Instead he called for a Jesuit priest, Fr. Dobokay, his close friend and confessor who gave him last rites.
@@Gedeonus Didn't say he was a secret calvinist, i don't see a problem with him becoming catholic, i just think he was well influenced by protestant culture which is obvious since he grew up in that environment.

I'm a conservative Catholic and Polish, so it's obvious that I like Hungary. Although after visiting Budapest I am convinced that even without these features, my nationality and religion, I would like this country. Budapest is one of the most beautiful European cities, Hungarian cuisine is delicious and the original Hungarian tokaji undoubtedly provides one of the most pleasant experiences you can have while consuming wine.
