I bought a halogen oven ages ago, but the instruction book said to put all the food on the rack and not directly in the bowl, which is useless for doing veg. I ended up putting it into storage. I'm pleased to know you can actually roast veg without a rack. I will go and get it back out of storage now.
I just got the oven from Target. It cooked the cut up filet Mignon perfect. It just took forever. The meatballs never did get all the way cooked. i would suggesst having a meat thermometer handy always. thanks for the video.
Just got my halogen oven lent to me by my brother, who couldn't make out how to use it. Love your series, really has been a great help and encouraged me to be more adventurous with my cooking!
love your videos on the halogen oven. just bought one and was worried that there wasn't any recipes for it. u make it seem so easy to make meals in them thank you x
I squeeze a chicken or lamb in there as well :D can now cook for up to 4 big eaters in the one oven, could stretch that to 6 if necessary(I’ve had the oven for a month now and LOVING it!!). Mine is convection, not halogen, but looks and works exactly like yours ^_^ I hadn’t thought of steaming broccoli etc in tinfoil - THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE TIP!!!!!
If like myself, you prefer yours less cooked (it is a matter of personal taste after all) then if you want extra crispy outsides on your roast potatoes, then par-boil for 4-5 mins .... just to soften the outside of the potatoes a little, drain, then give them a good shake about in the pan to "fluff" them up a little, then put into the oven, and cook for about 25-35 mins, test with skewer, if you need a little longer cooking, then put them back on for an extra 5-10 mins!Carrots and parsnip I personally would not par-boil, but cut them into slightly thinner strips than you would for conventional oven, and then cook in with the potatoes .... adjust times according to the "done - ness" of your liking! Again, all down to personal taste! The way that dereton33 describes, would absolutely suit my daughter in law, but not me TBH I prefer more crunch to veg! To my mind, there is no right or wrong way here, it is as I said a matter of personal taste, so the thing to do is EXPERIMENT! (and enjoy!) Hope this helps anyone in doubt! xxx and I hope dereton33 you don't mind me saying all this? :) xxx ( Just to add, thanks to you, I am now discovering the joys of using my halogen oven! xx)
I don't think the Halogen oven bowl part is particularly useful for vegetarians. The grilling part is great for cooking frozen veggie burgers, vegetarian sausages, that type of thing, frozen chips. Steaming vegetables in a regular steamer takes maximum 20 minutes, and you can collect the small water from the veggies.
The bottom line here is you cannot boil potatoes or veg directly from scratch in a halogen as opposed to just steaming them. I tried boiling water in one at its highest setting to no avail. So I use my halogen for roasting chicken portions, cooking steak and other meats and sometimes chips. The boiling I leave to doing in a saucepan on a small portable single electrical hob as I have no big oven as I have only myself to cook for.
Hi, I just found your video and it was very useful thanks. However, I have been unable to find any videos which explain how to use the breakfast rack in the halogen....have you ever used one and if so, how does one boil eggs :/
I have had a halogen oven used it until I wore it out. Bought a new one a month ago. The food comes out lovely and moist on the inside and roast pork has the best crackle. I have found that they do not cook quicker than conventional oven but the are cheaper to run so save on your power bill and they are so easy to keep clean because most of them have a wash cycle that are the benefits. Love mine only use conventional oven for large quantities which is not that often anymore because I cook for 2 , 90% of the time. It does not cook fast like a microwave so you need to allow for the cooking time.
Really appreciate you sharing your experience and product knowledge very savvy lady and excellent cook! 😀 great stuff going to get one tomorrow I think
Rara D, I thought the same. It makes me almost angry due to the vast amount of energy that is wasted throughout the heavily complicated method. Also again she is using tons of aluminum foil. She seems crazy about it. I guess that is due to the braincells it kills. People either use it in tons or hate it and don't use it at all. I never saw someone use it reasonable. Though to me there is no reasonable use of tin foil, because it's nothing but useless but so harmful and wasteful
Hello its me new subscriber been watching your cooking really enjoying and really please if you don't mind asking may i know what is that seasoning name you using it please would love to buy thank you very much really appreciated once again thanks xxxxx
Hi Had a Halogen Oven for years and do a lot of cooking with it, even though I have a gas cooker and Microwave. Parboiling is a good idea and this does not remove vitamins. I use a pressure cooker for this and it takes less than 6 minutes. My question is:- what was in the jar that you used? some kin d of gravy granules maybe? Thanks.
I do the lot in my steamer , same result. 5min. prep. 20mins steaming'. Regards the meats I nearly always use my " glass " oven Now and then my airfryer Love all your videos
Hi Naropa, I usually par boil the parsnips, carrots and potatoes for about 10 mins then I pop everything intogether for about an hour at 200 degrees. If you like crunchy veg then don't worry about par boiling. Hope this helps, thanks for watching Jan
It uses far less power ,so it saves you money once you get the hang of it & use it often , it's cheaper than buying an an oven & hob as well as having a very small foot print in a confined dwelling place .....so a good present to people starting out on their own such as a newly qualified student or an ex services person coming back home to the mother land . As it does not use more power than 1000 watts it won't not make your kitchen extra hot in summer ....... good if you live in a tower block & don't have a garden to go out into .
I own a Halogen oven. But I would never do this. Why use the oven if you boil it for an hour first. The point of the oven is "less work" . This just gave an extra hour washing up. As the other comment pointed out...where is the meat? What was the meat...or did the family eat only veggies?
So I have to part boil my potatoes? Well I'm screwed because I don't have a cooker to do that with. So much for using my halogen for doing any cooking -_-
+Firebird's Child You don't have to par boil them if you don't want to and do not have the facilities to do so. I like to par boil mine as that makes them start to crumble and you get the most awesome crackly roast spuds. Do not worry if you do not have cooking facilities you can pop your potatoes into the Halogen, just allow a little longer to cook right through and not be hard in the middle. You can check by piercing with a skewer. Thanks for watching jan
Depends on there size. If you pre boil them also effects the timings. So roughly 20 minutes for small ones boiled first and 30 minutes for large boiled, add another 10 if they have not been boiled first.
This is a bit off topic. I've recently bought an Andrew James halogen oven. The one with the hinged lid and digital controls. According to the booklet I should use the lower rack for pizzas. However when I do so, the base is soggy! Have you experienced this problem? I also have a higher rack and an airfryer I was going to experiment with, but any info to save me from burnt pizzas would be appreciated!
dalriada842 I would use the higher rack with the spacer, however as you have the model with the hinge lid you will not be able to do this, so how about trying to cook the pizza by placing it on a baking tray and then on the rack. Hopefully the heat will transmit through the tray and make it crisp? Good luck Jan
dereton33 I have the spacer ring too. There is a clip that allows the hinged mechanism to be raised and lowered. I'll try your suggestion of the higher rack and spacer. Thanks! Maybe I shouldn't have waffled on about irrelevant details. That's just me!
Can you please help me with the soup cooking. I bought a oven and I am not sure if I can cook soup or dishes like stew direct in the glass bowl without the stainless steel racks.
Even if you want to cook roast potatoes in a conventional oven it is necessary to par boil them for ten minutes . Any cookbook will tell you this. Halogen ovens are cheaper to run than conventional ovens, especialy if you are cooking for one or two people.
Hi, great vid! Ive just bought one of these and the instructions told me to use the wire mesh baskets to cook things and you put the tatas in the bottom of it? Why does one have to "par" boild anything first? Anyway what the hell is "par boil" anyway? Cook them first a little? If so whats the point of even buying one of these if one has to "half boil/cook" anything first? Oh and its taking more then 18-25 mins to cook just chips? As i say, ive only just bought one of these so i have no idea how to use it properly! Great vid and i hope to see more and have a great day!
par boiling is something many people do even with a conventional oven.. not just this or any halogen /Air fryer. It is for the texture/crunch of the roast potatoes
Hm, I don't really understand. If I precook the vegetables, then I can cook them to the end, without a halogen oven, stopping, turning it. etc. Goes much quicker.... To pour away the cooking water of potatoes is a great mistake, too. I think, there is an other way, to use this thing effectively.
I par boil all my root veg in one pan even carrots for 15 mins. Then add broccoli and caulflower for 5 mins Job done..Surround the veg around your nearly cooked meat
Did you say cook for an hr? It’s an awful long time to cook veggies, esp you’d parboiled some. Doesn’t sound very economical cooking in this kind of oven.
What did I just watch! Boil and add OIL hmm....... Just use your oven as you defeated the purpose of the gadget you purchased. I mean the food looks great, I understand the concept of what you are saying. But for the purpose of reviewing this gadget you purchased............. You just went 360 4x.
The halogen oven is not good for everything..Good for bought pies and all meat..Pizza is useless in the Halogen..They are not cracked up to be all that. Hence why the prices have come down. You can cook par boiled root veg but I prefer the oven..They only take 30 mins to cook in my oven..Or use an air fryer

Keep going with it, it cooks the best roast dinners ever.

Some of these also come with round trays that you can put on the lowest rack.
Same here
I just bought an old one from a friend and had no idea you could actually use the bowl
I thought everything had to be on the rack ...
I just got the oven from Target. It cooked the cut up filet Mignon perfect. It just took forever. The meatballs never did get all the way cooked. i would suggesst having a meat thermometer handy always. thanks for the video.

Agreed.
Roast Potatoes take an hour to roast in a normal oven.
Thanks Jan. Bachelor here looking for some good cooking advice, been watching a lot of your helpful vids, thanks.
You are so welcome!
you are just lovely, thank you for the quick and easy memory tools at the beginning :)
Thank you.
Hi, just found you and this is going to help me with my Christmas dinner cooking. Will watch your other videos now too. X
Hope you enjoy! Cheers darren.
All vegetables must to wash with cold water just BEFORE cut in slices, and put to cook without boiled
Marvellous video and an eye opener. Thank you and lovely presentation.
Thank you, pleased you enjoyed it.

Thanks so much!
this does seem overly complicated though the idea of having one was just being able to use it to cook everything without using the big cooker
I just cut up my potatoes, pumpkin and carrots around the chicken. The other vegs do in the microwave.
Rara D, I thought the same. It makes me almost angry due to the vast amount of energy that is wasted throughout the heavily complicated method. Also again she is using tons of aluminum foil. +Clive Bonner . It is a tub of Season All, basically a mix of herbs.
+dereton33 Thanks. I will try all this.
Pardon my ignorance, but what is a Halogen Oven? Seems great, and I would like to more about it.
B Rob It is a fan driven small oven using a Halogen bulb for heat that uses far less energy than a conventional oven.
One hour later? Probably gonna cancel the order because it still sunday...
Saved me because my oven has stopped working and I have a Halogen oven thanks. Can I put my Frozen mix veg all in foil with oil ? Thanks
Yes they cook fine.
I do the lot in my steamer , same result. 5min. prep. 20mins steaming'. Regards the meats I nearly always use my " glass " oven Now and then my airfryer Love all your videos

So where is the meat being cooked?
thank you for your video .📹 what temperature is it centigrade or faranhite
Centigrade.
What are the time values for cooking the vegetables and the temperatures?
Hi Naropa, I usually par boil the parsnips, carrots and potatoes for about 10 mins then I pop everything intogether for about an hour at 200 degrees. If you like crunchy veg then don't worry about par boiling. Hope this helps, thanks for watching Jan

very nice
I’ve just bought the same halogen oven and I’m trying to work out how to cook in it. I’m just trying chicken breast with bacon. Hope it turns out ok.
Good luck with it. We love ours.

dereton33 ah, thanks :) I was getting frustrated as I didn't know what to do with the halogen. Thanks for replying
Careful cooking with halogen oven on the top shelf. If the food expands to touch the metal heating element like mine did, the glass lid can shatter !
Thanks for the info.
I don't own a hob only a halogen oven. What are the timings for new potatoes please.
Depends on there size. If you pre boil them also effects the timings. So roughly 20 minutes for small ones boiled first and 30 minutes for large boiled, add another 10 if they have not been boiled first.
I lost track,, how long did it take to cook the cauliflour
30 minutes
Great video, very helpful, Thanks Jan :-)
Jan, what liter capacity is the halogen oven, please? Many thanks for your excellent video's. :)
Hi Lauren they are 11 litre.
+dereton33
Many thanks... :) I';m going to order one today. I wouldn't have bothered to buy one had I not seen your video's. Excellent!!!
11 litres and 17 with the extender ring.

Great video. Try giving usncarnivores some love with video on how the bigboss can grill and barbeque or searnsteak.
cooking veggies for an hour!!! u drain all the nutrients
Can you make soup in it.? Or rice dishes?
Yes
Can you please help me with the soup cooking. I bought a oven and I am not sure if I can cook soup or dishes like stew direct in the glass bowl without the stainless steel racks.
please reply to inalegrange@gmail.com
I searched for halogen u got that and this is the second thing that pops up
Great ah.
Why can't roast veg go on a rack ? Wouldn't they crisp up more with the air circulating around under them than sitting on the bottom ? Thanks
You can do that, it`s your choice.
Yes, I use my rack that raises it up higher. Raising it closer to the top browns it.
Hello, I have just got a Halogen oven, so all is new to me, i am looking to cook small corn on the cobs and can't find anything - can you help.
Gary Hiscutt Haven't cooked that!!! mmmmm.... sounds delicious!!! Might give it a try !! good luck! Al and Jan
+Gary Hiscutt I put a standard one in for 10 minutes and it's AMAZING :D

Where did you get the Season All please !!
Tesco.
Thank you for share...
Thank you.. very helpful
No problem.
I have to say this is loads of work compared to a slow cooker
Turns out completely differently though
How long does it take to cook in the machine
45 minutes.
Hi both do you have to preboil very before you at it to the bowl?
You do not have too. But we like our veg soft so we do.
any tips on how to cook a pizza? bottom never seems to cook.
Needs raised on the rack some
What's the name of your halogen cook book?
Sarah Flower. The every day cookbook.
@@dereton33 I've been eyeing her books!! Thanks!!!
OMG I just bought ajames lid version and i m not gonna be able to cook potatoes without parboiling?
hektora did you figure it out? Do you have any tips?
Even if you want to cook roast potatoes in a conventional oven it is necessary to par boil them for ten minutes . Any cookbook will tell you this. Halogen ovens are cheaper to run than conventional ovens, especialy if you are cooking for one or two people.

That`s just our way, you do it as you prefer.
I bought one but they only call it a convection oven. it heats up but there is no light, Is this normal?
No that is not the same, ours is a halogen oven, with a round halogen bulb.
What’s the point of the halogen if you first have to boil them. 😮 not sure I understand
We just like them soft. You do not need to boil them otherwise.
is this halogen oven still a thing in 2022? thanks
Sure is, am using it to cook dinner right this moment.
@@dereton33 too late, today ordered one 😁 but seriously: do you use the original bulb?
Magyarul van e vidi?
I was going to buy one of these but watching this video I think I will stick with the oven. too much hassel!!!
You'd be better/quicker cooking them in a pan.
Palava as usual. May as well do them on the hob, lol, some people!!!!!

The foil is bad for the brain if you let the food tach the foil.
Newest studies state otherwise. It's not harmful to cook in foil. However it makes no sense to put food in foil when cooking in this. That's crazy.

Why do you insist in cooking in the bowl this is dangerous and will not let the air circulate, this is why you get trays
Wow!!! that told me.
