    I don't comment on your videos often, but I just had to tell you that you guys are rocking it! Don't let anyone's comments make you feel rushed. Enjoy the process. Enjoy the journey. My goal is to go the debt free route like you did in the next couple of years and seeing how you're picking and choosing your projects in a sensible, workable fashion is all very valuable. Ben, I love your compost system. That seems so very efficient. I can't wait to get my own chickens so I can put them to work for me. In the meantime I'll have to snag some coop bedding from some friends that have a coop to get my pile going quicker. Meg, I can't get over how quickly your garden is progressing given the time frame in which you planted! It took several months here in CT for my suburban homestead garden to start producing what you have already. Simply amazing. The growing season there is one more thing that's drawing me to your area of the Carolinas not to mention all the cool homesteaders that are building a community out there. ;-) I'm looking forward to seeing you guys at HOA! Enjoy your new property and enjoy the process. It will all unfold in due time. - All the best. ~ Theresa

    When we bought our old house on 3 1/2 acres, it had a cellar.. In the cellar is the electrical hook ups for the water well as well as the pressure tank. We have been here for 27 winters and never had a frozen water line. I frequently say thank you to the elderly gentleman and his wife who built this place.( They have been gone, for many years, to heaven!) We have been down to 8°, but usually 14° is about as low as we get. This is the first time I have not had to buy and install heat tapes on water lines.
    God will look after you this winter. He loves you.

I don't know how anyone can say it is taking you too long to complete anything. Wow! When you first broke ground for your fall planting I thought it would never make it before winter. Fantastic job. you two, and I mean that whole heartedly. Forget the critics and just take a look around and then pat each other on the back and say "Well done!". Just a tip before you start putting up the siding, paint it. You can use a roller for deep texture, or spray them. It is much faster and you can just caulk and paint the joints after it is on. It will look like you got a lot more work done faster plus there is less time on ladders.

      Don't offer help or he'll tell you that you assume it wasn't already done, like when I pointed out his 'help' installed a window then installed wood around it, obviously to hold it in? Instead of using caulking and then flashing, as the flashing goes far beyond the wood strips. Guess I bruised his lil ego. I was actually even going to offer to fly out and help, but there I go assuming again ... that they'd want help. Shrug.

    • @vink6163
      @vink6163 5 лет назад +2

      @@micpern872 Sounds like your ego is a bit bruised too because someone didn't fall over themselves to accept your advice. Unfortunately the way many people offer their suggestions here it sounds rather insulting like they think the job is being done wrong, and quite frankly if I took the time out of my day to put up videos about what I'm doing, the last thing I would want to read is a bunch of messages about how many things I did wrong, or how someone got their nose out of joint because I didn't follow their advice.

    • @vink6163
      @vink6163 5 лет назад +2

      @@micpern872 Bit of an over the top reaction there if you're trying to claim your ego isn't bruised though isn't it? (This is also your term not mine, I was just quoting you in my first message.) I'm not stalking old RUclips posts, it just takes me a while to catch up with videos because I don't spend all day here and your comment came up near the top. I'm a bit surprised that you would write a comment and then, as you put it, "get your panties in a bunch" when someone replies to it. It sounds like you have bigger issues if you fly off the handle when you get a little criticism so if you do avoid this channel it's probably for the best, for all of us.

    Hey this is the reason we moved to Idaho many years ago now as in 1981....My husband had a construction business and was second generation at it..He was operating a backhoe as a little child for his daddy.. He can't take the heat anymore for a long time.. Me either.. so in that regard we are on the same page.. We just had our 50th wedding anniversary yesterday.. I made zucchini bars and he dispatched six young roosters and I fried them up.. That was the usual kind of day.. Today football is in the background and he is cleaning our wood stove...You are smart the both of you and Ben you will definitely begin to do it all your way.. And Meg too. In the meantime enjoy every minute of your time... It is a gift..

    Love that...’It’s about building a home!!!” I applaud the both of you for sharing that attitude. It will teach your children to have that same value of what a true gift having a home instead of just a house will be and how it will add to every other aspect of your lives. It is what surprises me the most about man’s misunderstanding of the value of owning real estate. It’s what you do with your “talents” that transforms the “land” into “the fruits of your labor,” be they those you can can or those you can watch grow into strong individuals or trees. The original provider of the land used its cultivation often as “food for thought.”

    Ben I feel your pain. Got heatstroke in France years ago and lost a few days out of my life. Can't stand to be out in the heat now. Meg a little tip........take your clothes pegs off the line everytime you use them and into a dry place. If you leave them out in all weathers they'll eventually get dirty and leave marks on your clothes and you'll have to keep replacing them. I've had mine at least 10 years and they're still good as new. The garden is looking great, beautiful door and your future is looking bright.

      For my clothespins I use a 3 pocket "waitress apron" tied around my waist. It's similar to a nail bag, which also works. The clothes pins stay right with me as I hang clothes and I drop the pins into the pockets as I take the clothes off the line.

    Being debt free is better than buying on credit. Doing your home at your pace, and paying as you go along and in your time is the best method for you and also gives less stress. Rome was not built in a day, and you guys are doing so well in the short time you have been on your property. Enjoy each day. My dad taught me a valuable lesson, I have moved to different countries a few times, and the weather used to get me, he said 'when you get up in the morning and you open your curtains, what ever weather is out there and what you have to do in that day, that is how it is for that day, take it in your stride'. I am thinking the same for you guys with your building and your work for each day. Do not let comments from people on your blog make you feel you are not doing enough or going fast enough, they do not see how much work you put in a day, also looking after the home, family and schooling in between. I love your videos and enjoy your journey with you, you are a lovely family, keep strong. Have a great day.

    Building debt free is such a powerful tool. We were in our early 50s when we started building our homestead in the high desert of northern Arizona 15 years ago. A car accident forced us to take a home equity line of credit to pay medical bills - but we had the equity that allowed us to avoid absolute financial catastrophe. We did more than 95% of the work ourselves, so we understand how long it takes to (re)build a place. We lived in an RV for two years in our place while built. You already have the experience of living in the area in winter, which is a huge deal. Good luck. Have a fantastic and productive weekend.

    You mentioned skirting your trailer for winter. Friend of mine, who has trailer in the wilds, used straw bails, wrapped in plastic, so that come spring, he turned it into a base for his compost. He said that with the cold and snow loads on the bales allowed the straw to slowly heat up for a good spring compost. Add in his chicken and horse poo, taa-daa, garden dirt.

    We run a ranch and do gardening and chickens, as well. The fact that you can film anything is really doing something! Great job, y’all. Enjoy your family and the whole process. ❤️

    I felt the same about my red wigglers as you do about the compost factory; I get it. Thank you both very much for carving out time for the Rhode's; the N.C. homesteader community continues to amaze me. Happy weekend ;)

    Our horses are in a dry lot over the winter, and the entire winter's manure and spoiled hay are just piled up -- about 5 feet high and 12 feet around -- and let sit and decompose. After about two years the pile will be down to a foot or less tall, and will be sweet smelling black crumbly dirt. Zero work other than making the pile. As for things not being done before winter -- we finally got in our house (my son and I built it from ground up) in November. We were living in a 10' x 12' shed until then. We had a great wood stove in the house so all was well -- even tough it wasn't insulated fully yet.
    You'll do fine, and you'r family will be stronger in the end. Our daughter still brings up all of the 'cool' stuff she did that year like showering outdoors all the way into November! Good luck guys, and be very careful of the heat. I had heat stroke while chainsawing a trail back in the day, and heat effects me way more than it used to since then. Have a great day and stay safe!

    My husband has had a heat stroke. Once you have had one you are more likely to have another. You have to always be on guard. Take it one day at a time. Y'all are doing great!

    Lovely door, great garden, it’s all coming together really well. Windows too... wooo hooo. You’ll be fine if you don’t get it all done this year, things have a habit of working out, especially with family, friends, love and happiness.

    Gosh, Kids you (u two) are my very favorite couple on u tube. I just adore you both for so many reasions. You have made a promise to each other then flowing on to the boys.THE PROMISE, you realized you were having problems, so you TALKED and made a plan to repair those hurts and misunderstand s,. Also I admire even with your life in a trailer 🤗 with 4 did you hear I said 4 boys, still you arent sharp or mean , rough with thier noises and whatever boys mess-up. I'm so proud of BOTH of you for your inner strength s. Your goal of being debit free is going to make those children appreciate you, and they know they are loved. I feel like your mom,I have. Such Hope's for your family.
    So fondly, mrsjob

    We bought a new mobile home 25 years ago and had heat tape put on. As long as we remember to turn it on, it works great!! Never had a plumbing issue. 1 year we forgot and our plumbing froze up and had a big problem. We have yet to replace the heat tape it's lasted this long. Great stuff

    Love your composting method. Similar to mine. I do deep bedding in the coop and run but only clean it out twice a year. In the fall I put it directly on the garden beds to sit through the winter. I do back to eden/no dig method. In the spring I put it in the compost bin to finish off. I am in awe at how much you have gotten done with the garden! The fire pit is so awesome.

    Your hard work is showing. Your place is so nice! The planes always have bugs. Glad you are feeling better. Your compost pile is so nice. It will get dark. Love the ladies 🐔 We are about to get chickens. We have had them before so very excited. I’m going to tell my daughter Andrea Hollar about you channel. She will enjoy it. She and her roommate do a city garden. I hope one day they will move to the country where we are but they have a really nice garden in the city. They are allowed 4 chickens in the city. So I hope they get them. Then I would have grandchickens. Lol. I am disabled so I can’t be in this heat either. Just take it slow and anything you need will find a way to you without going into debt for it. It’s like the Angels just bring it to you. Take care, Leslye

    You’re moving forward ,how fast isn’t the point! I’m glad you’re not putting the pressure of a deadline on yourself...With homesteading you will never be finished,there’s always going to be something that needs to be done, so as long as your making progress , even the tiniest little bit, enjoy the victory! You will teach your children by example how to enjoy small victories and how to cope with disappointment and to. Take that instant gratification mindset from them! You’re taking that Poison out of their mindset ,it’s an amazing gift! Keep up the good work and great parenting!
