  • We've met our bird target of 250... but we keep going. A trip to Tommy Thompson Park in Toronto to see if we can add any new birds. We are joined by my friend and fellow birder and baker, Nancy.
Two rare birds in this one! Dickcissel at The Evergreen Brickworks and an even more rare Red Phalarope at Colonel Samuel Smith Park.
I would really appreciate if you would subscribe to this channel. It will really help us out as we head into 2024 and begin a new, exciting challenge.

Nice landscape. Thank you for sharing your beautiful video. I had chance to video some red phalaropes baie du febvre (Quebec) this summer. They were so dynamic and moved so fast in water. Enjoyed a lot your videos

      Very nice!
Were they in non-breeding plumage like this one? Or breeding?
Thanks for the nice comment about the channel 😊

Glad you got some more birds! Nancy's pies look amazing 🥧 Are mink ever considered a pest over there (similar to the UK)?

    • @BritHikesOntario
      @BritHikesOntario  8 месяцев назад

Hi Tash, I haven't heard of them being considered pests to the same degree.
That particular Mink is probably somewhat helpful. As ghoulish as it sounds, they will take young birds. There's a big Cormorant overpopulation in the general area we saw it.... along with some smaller cormorant carcasses (and a gull).
Cormorants get a lot of hate. But to clarify, by overpopulation I mean that they are altering the environment by damaging trees with their roosting and guano.

How exciting you got to see the Red Phalarope and Dickcissel! Thanks also for explaining how rare both sightings are, and a bit of their typical locations/behaviours. I've been meaning to go see the Dickcissel, as I live near the Brickworks, but haven't yet. Lovely to see it here in your video. Have you gone to Todmorden Mills Park for birding at all? It's sort of across the road of Evergreen Brickworks and where I spend most of my time... not much to see now, but if you ever plan a visit I'd love to meet up with you and Sarah.
Can't wait to share your video with many of my friends who have heard of these sightings and can now see them, thanks to your filming. Happy Birding and thanks again!

Hey, thanks for any shares, and for you comment. Much appreciated.
I have gone for walks/hikes around that area in the past, before I was as into photography as I am now. It was quite active for birds as you'd expect - good habitat with plenty of trees and the river nearby. Seems a good spot, but I haven't specifically gone there to bird in recent years.

Im from the area and ive seen my instagram blowing up with photos of the red phalarope. It's really sad to see but a lot of wildlife photographers are not ethical and will do more harm to the bird then good. As a wildlife photographer myself i have also been shoved and told to move by other photographers. Then they would go past me and continue to get closer to the subject, usually making them flight. These photographers who put the shot first and the welfare of the animal second are whats wrong with our hobby. It should be about the birds first. Enjoy the moment and appreciate how majestic they are, if you get a shot of it thats great but if not you will always have that memory. Sorry for the bit of a rant but it really grinds my gears to hear about bad photographers in the wild.

No worries on the rant 😆
I don't want to get specific, but there were a few things going on that particular morning. No real need for it because this bird is very confiding.

Bird photographers are the worst, always trampling rare plants, stepping on snakes and just generally neglecting the greater environment
