Been fishing the Dominican Republic for about 32 years, Punta Cana has good fishing from shore (Tarpon,Jack,Snook and Permit) Live or dead bait like Sardine,Shrimp, crab or squid.
I will be in DR soon in punta cana I wish to do some fishing mostly inshore or surf need someone like you to guide me but no trolling I want to feel the bites , mostly casting spinning reels . arriving sept 28 to Oct 5 2023 i hope you’ll read my comment! Be in touch !
Hi guys. I’m sorry to hear your fishing wasn’t successful in DR. This is not a review or reply to comments to this video.I was just searching info on surf fishing in Punta Cana, DR before my trip .... But there isn’t much... so I hope this will help for others. Moreover, on January 20-26th 2017 I was staying at Rio República adults only resort, I fished of the beach right in the front of Majestic Resort, that was 5 min walk from where I was staying... Again, local guy who sells sunglasses pointed me to the spot. It has stronger current and some rocks on the bottom compered to the rest of the sandy beach. The most important thing was that fish was hitting only after sunset or between 5-7am. Bite died after sunrise. Locals are always good source of info. I always like to reward them with some lures and other terminal tackle when I visit Carribians . British folks who enjoy fly fishing can possibly be a good source of info as well. I met one guy at the beach. He had few smaller jacks on the blue popper fly. I had 7’6 St.Croix travel rod with Daiwa BG4000. I used Tsunami 5’ talking popper with 5-7 blows ups and 2-3 hook ups that lasted about 5 seconds. My guess is that lure was too big for local fish. What produced two nice jacks(Horse eye jack 20’-23’ ?) for me was 4’ hoggy glow swimming mullet on 3/4-1oz jighead. Also, I used rapala 5-6’ x-rap silver color. It produced 3-4 snappers about 2-4lbs that I don’t know a name of.... I also experimented with Gulp blood worms to use on simple fish finder rig that worked for me when wind was to strong for lures and soft plastics. It produced same size snappers 2-4lbs and some other smaller fish. Meaning have some Gulp and use it when no other bait is available. DR airport TSA unreasonably strict about fishing tackle on the plane. Maybe check in baggage is a good idea for fishing gear and some Mama Huana. Good luck and I hope this helps !:)
The one with the blue dots is a coney I believe. I caught one from the beach in punta cana last year and I had the chef at my resort cook it for me. One of the best fish I have ever had.
Man y'all that was a really cool vid I liked it. Sorry about your rod that sucks. Man I was laughing 😂😂 when you said, I think I just threw up a little when you were in the pool 😂😂. Anyways cool vid man keep it up 👍🏼👍🏼
Beach resort areas in the Dominican Republic are not a good place to fish. The hotels clean up the shore and the beach area so that tourists don't find weeds while they swim around. If you're gonna fish in the Dominican Republic is best to do so in an non touristic area. Hope this helps!
10:52 the one with the blue dots is a coney (I believe they're also called blue spotted grouper) the other one is a wrasse called puddingwife. I catch those here on Bonaire as well!
First little bait fish reminded me of a whiting. It is most likely in the drum family. Keep having Erin in the picture. You two are a team. We love both of you.
YOU SHOULD COME TO VENEZUELA SOME DAY, YOU'LL LOVE FISHING HERE, YOU CAN CATCH SAILFISH, MAHI MAHI, SWORDFISH, BARRACUDA, BIG RED DRUMS, BIG JACKS AND SO MANY OTHERS. GREETINS FROM VENEZUELA, LOVE YOUR VIDEOS.
Heading to dominican republic myself first week of april, if u had a chance to do it again what changes would u have made.. what recommendations u can give, seen other videos of pompano on the beaches... thanks in advance for the feedback
That's a drum type fish theirs black drum their too!!I would use that for live bait!!The fish you caught on the spoon is a lizard fish!! they hide in the sand and ambush shiny minnows,is why he hit your spoon. If no fish chum the water with can sardines and anchovies and sand and bread, mix it good so its like oat meal pasty ,and throw some in the water where you gonna fish espically evening time then cast baits on the bottom, and wait, you gonna get action!! throw cupple times before you fish let it sit for an hour, then start fishing at night!!The two fish you caught the green one is a wrassel and the brown orange one is a hawk fish.
St. Croix Triumph surf rods do not cost $400. I have three Triumphs that are 8, 9, and 10 feet long. I just bought the 10 footer last fall, and it was only $150 brand new at Dick's Sporting Goods.
I thought the same when he said that. I have 2 mojo surf rods a 12 and a 9ft and a mojo inshore all a level better than the triumph i think the 12 footer was $250 from tackle direct
I paid 190 for a 10' 6" at avid angler in st Augustine. Did not expect to see this breaking bs I would have got a mojo if they did not make them purple. Maybe st croix sucks after all?
Wow the great Hey Skipper was in DR for fishing !! Sad I just saw this video now..can give you some update about fishing there…my trick is to take white part of the bread 🥖 make little balls and drop it in the water..as many as I can, next is the ballyhoo fish all around the place and pompanos too..can catch them with same white bread meatballs !! Behind them comes the snook and crevalle jacks..and bread is easy to find at morning buffet!!!
the fish you caught on the boat was a parrot chub and a brown chub. that is what we call them in Barbados. squid works really well on those structure less beaches.
Hey Brenden, you should try Long Island beach Nj. During striped season. It’s not too far away from we’re you live. You can drive on the beach. Fishing is good! 🎣
Fun video. High end graphite or carbon rods are great for action and sensitivity but they're little hot-house orchids when it comes to care. One little scratch or blemish and they seem to snap like a breadstick. But you knew that. I fish with a lot of vintage stuff, mostly 40-50 year old fiberglass Garcia Conolons and Berkleys, but I have an Ugly Stick or two. Short of hooking a passing cruise ship, I don't worry about them breaking.
Hey good videos, cant get enough. That strange fish you caught in the Dominican Republic...out here in Jamaica we call it "MOCK ROBIN"... PS...you need to visit Jamaica
I have that exact same rod and it broke on me casting a 2ounce kastmaster in puerto Vallarta Mexico. St Croix replaced the top section no questions asked but still now I don’t trust that rod. Mine broke about 9 inches from the tip if I remember correctly it was a couple of years ago. Anyway thanks for all your videos
Well i guess you must check the Internet about places you go. Anyway, its an awesome place with your love one. You should bring 2 fishing rods just incase. And those places you went doesnt seem to have a fishing shop around. Better bring your salty baits with you when you go fishing. Have a great day both of you. Take more pictures on land or by boat.
The second fish you caught on the sabiki was a lizard fish. Looks exactly the same as the ones we catch off the piers in southern california, except the ones here are brown. Most people around here say its not good for bait, but thats because we have plenty of greenback mackerels. Many eat the larger sized ones and throw back the smaller ones. You’ll know when they’re hooked from the very intermittent head shakes. The long gaps between shakes sometimes make you think the fish popped off. Sucks that your rod broke, and at such an inconvenient time too. However, its awesome that you were able to find such a great plan b. Good job rolling with the punches and riding the rougher waves. Rock on! Love your channel.
Lived in DR for 5years in the north coast. Inshore fishing is dead around there pretty sure due to nets and overfishing no regulations. Off shore fishing is the move along with moving down to Haiti side of island for better fish. There are spots but not like other Caribbean islands
I just come back from DR and in Punta Cana and Boca Chica the best way to get a good size fish is fishing with a drone, big fish are not close to the beach ! FYI
The reason why your fishing pole might have snapped is that the 9 foot St Croix Triumph, Lure Weight limit is 2 1/2 OZ. So anything above that weight limit will cause it to snap, it might not happen the first cast but if you use a 3 OZ weight but over time it creates stress fractures in the blank (rod) and then it will eventually snap.
That’s great to see you using hand lines! I lived in Miami for 20 years and pick that up now I have a bucket full of them rigged. Sometimes I just take a cast net and some hand lines to the beach. Be a man catch a fish with your hands!
The second fish you caught is known as "lagarto" in the Canary Islands. In English this means lizard, like Tyler Kobylarz already indicated. I Know that in the Canary Islands, they are mainly used as an ingredient in fish soup. The Latin name is Synodus saurus. It could very well be that in the Dominican Republic there are sub-species. Greetings from Holland.
I fished Haiti a few years ago, you DON'T go in the water ! It's so polluted you will get sick ! The beaches in DR are much nicer and safer ! Check out the Blazer graphite 8 piece rod, they are made in Germany and around $120 and come in a great case and are very well made.
I have seen rods break on the cast when using braid in windy conditions and the braid wraps around the top eye of the rod. Couldn't quite see if you were using braid or not but when I am fishing braid I check to make sure line does not wrap top eye before casting. Thanks for an awesome channel, watching from Cape Town South Africa.
st croix has a great warranty and repair program. You can probably get something done about it. If not, you can have it repaired with a spigot but the rod will never be exactly the same.
The scopolamine patch does not work very well. I cant tell you how many times I have been offshore and saw someone puking & sea sick that had one of those patches on. From my experience if you want to prevent sea sickness you should take Dramamine the night before you go so its in your system when you hit the water in the AM and then also take some before you get on the boat in the morning. Just FYI
so how far is that from Montauk, the big stripers should be there at that time I'm hitting the Outer Banks in November but if I get a chance I'll try and OBX in October
It’s called a lizard fish. PS some people call it the candle fish because they say that you could try it and then light it and I’ll stay lit for a long time like a candle but I’m not sure if that’s true or not?
You can fix whit 1/4 or 1/2 fiber glass rod. Depending of rod to fix. Used epoxy to glued together. But this is just for extended the time of the fishing rod.
In the Dominican, the beach usually doesn't have many fish. While you were there, did you see any locals going out in their small fishing boats to fish the outer reef which was around 4oo yards out? When I was there, that's what they did and they brought back fish every time
the rod probably broke because you started out the cast with slacked line since the lure was on the ground and you whipped it could have caused a lot of stress really quick and if the rod had a small crack in it that might have been it maybe from dropping or something call st Croix and they will hook you up with a new one
question for ya: do you have a way to point us to those boat guides in the skiffs? We have some really avid anglers who want to fish nearshore without paying the big fancy guides for the mega excursions every single day. Did the resort have them down to call? We're staying at a beach in punta plata and want to see if someone can swing by and pick up our group each day. The anglers are extemely experienced. Thanks nice vid
I do not know the fish because am singaporean I recommend you to come Singapore to fish because Singapore have a lot of fishing spot and you can try your bait out here
hello, the st croix rods people will fix or replace your rod thats why you paid the big bucks! contact them and send it to them they will take good care of you keep your head up and lines tight....you have a great girl to share time with bless you both! peace, bigdog out!
Your second fish looks like a Grinner.... we have them in Sydney Australia... the colourful fish we catch reef fishing. They are wrasse... sad when a favourite rod breaks😥
Sometimes the break point of materials like fishing rods. Happen for change temperatures. Happen to me I have my rod in the hotel. In my room was 70 cold and when I got outside was 95 hot. I started fishing and snapped. You have to let the rod adapted to outdoors temperature. But I understand. From room to beach not much time.
I always rinse off my rod and reel with water from a bottle or even in the shower. i have a few of my rigs on the channel that I tie. I can make a video about it as well. Thank you for asking
+Senko Skipper Yeah saltwater fishing here is pretty awesome. I'm getting into my busy season at work but maybe down the road we could use my family's house at the coast to fish out of.
I would still rather fish with a broken rod before I give hand lining a chance again .. It look like you had a good time , I didn’t see any problem hehehe I thought for sure the hotel staffs had come out and yell at you guys for fishing
Surf casting can put a ton of pressure on line and rod tips. I've busted two surf rod tips myself the exact same way. Get Ron Arras book on distance surfcasting it'll change your results forever.
Day 2.0 of binge watching hey skipper’s old videos. What I’ve learned:
Bring more than one rod on a trip. Talk to the locals for fishing
Been fishing the Dominican Republic for about 32 years, Punta Cana has good fishing from shore (Tarpon,Jack,Snook and Permit) Live or dead bait like Sardine,Shrimp, crab or squid.

Looked like fun. Nice to see another Asian angler just as obsessed with fishing on vacation.
👍👊
Hey que bien de allí soy yo República Dominicana
Did St Croix replace the rod?
I use a 9ft ugly stick and Kast King Night Hawk for surf fishing. Super cheap, but they catch fish.
yes they did, they sent me a new tip.
Ugly sticks are great, they wont break on you either!

Yall got some great videos. One of my favorite channels for fishing related stuff. Keep up the good work.

Digging the videos man and great tips too!
Cheers from the Texas coast!
Small cut pieces of shrimp on a drop shot rig or bottom rig. Works well there and every where.

Looks like lots of fun! The second fish was a lizard fish.
+Chad The Walrus thanks for watching Chad! Where are you from?
Indiana, half hour south of Indianapois
the fish you caught on the boat was a parrot chub and a brown chub. that is what we call them in Barbados. squid works really well on those structure less beaches.
cool stuff, the more personal the better, you guys have a great vibe
Hey Brenden, you should try Long Island beach Nj. During striped season. It’s not too far away from we’re you live. You can drive on the beach. Fishing is good! 🎣
Option 4...actually spend time with your family
Really like coral reef fishing, fishes r colorful. ps sorry bout that rod hehehe...
+Beachboy Stephen haha 😂 man thank you for watching so many videos and commenting!

That strange fish you caught in the Dominican Republic...out here in Jamaica we call it "MOCK ROBIN"...

The second fish is a lizard fish, where I live in California, they are EXCELLENT bait for Halibut and other larger species of fish.
It's a lizard fish. AKA a brown trout in the Carolinas. Catch 'em on Gotcha plugs when fishing for blues & Spanish.
+Ron Hawkins woah, how big do they get?
Omg my country wow 💯💯💫💥💪💪💪💪am proud of to be dominicano why didnt you try the river
Which river? I’m going on March 31
Beautiful place! just really surprised at how small the fish are! Always take the time to enjoy the time with your loved ones.
IN Hawaii we call the colorful one with the teeth Hinalea glad you guys got to go fishing
Your catching parrot fish they have different names in different parts of the world
Hey I'm going to punta Cana. What's the regulation on bringing lures?
The more colorful fish (top) is a rainbow wrasse. In Hawaii we call them Hinalea.
Well i guess you must check the Internet about places you go. Anyway, its an awesome place with your love one. You should bring 2 fishing rods just incase. I'm watching this cause I'm from Dominican Republic 🇩🇴
+Andrew Benitez Cabrera how did you like?
Senko Skipper like the video or Dominican Republic

Michael Nguyen that is the only explanation I can think of. Thanks for the clarity, I totally agree... I was casting a 2.5 oz
Another theory for the broken rod is that the sinker could have hit the rod on the cast. Can happen with an overhand cast.
yes, possibly. it might have also been too heavy or something. either way, we got it fixed eventually
Fishing in the islands is fun we catch lots of fish 🐠 🌈🌴
Normally I like to use Squid ...or conch
Great video
Going to Punta Cana in September, How much did the local Fishermen charge you?
That parrot looking fish is called a puddingwife wrasse.. (Halichoeres radiatus)..
+Teunis Uittenbogaart soup!!! I want to try that! Thank you so much for watching and commenting!
+littlegoobie they sent me a new one:)
Just FYI
so how far is that from Montauk, the big stripers should be there at that time
I'm hitting the Outer Banks in November but if I get a chance I'll try and OBX in October
Not sure, I'll have to check. I am highly considering NC btw. Thanks for your recommendations Larry!
Erin is telling me she really wants to go to Montauk, I go
Where the lady wants to go hahah.
@10:15 Looks like a Baby Grouper haha wonderful video!
Line was slacked and probably tied up on the tip. I've had the same problem but luckily my line snapped instead of the pole. St. Croix pole as well.
Chris Fang wow. Didn't even think of that. That is a great explanation..
Don't think the rod woulda snapped if it was tangled at the tip.
Looked like the hook grabbed that seaweed on the sand TBH
It’s called a lizard fish. PS some people call it the candle fish because they say that you could try it and then light it and I’ll stay lit for a long time like a candle but I’m not sure if that’s true or not?
The fish caught on the boat: some kind of grouper; puddingwife; another small grouper; squirrelfish; strawberry grouper.
this is awesome. i love the name puddingwife-- never heard of it!
that funky one was a lizard fish, apparently theyre super tasty; im going to punta cana in about a month; any recommendations on where to go fishin?
+ChroniclesofAB it's bad fishing from the beach at our resort. If you can find a local with a boat, pay him to take u you!
Love your blog style video. You guys work so wel together. BTW Erin has a terrific smile. Keep up the great videos.
The yellow blue is a wrasse. They're everywhere in the tropics reef with many different color
The blue and yellow fish you caught on the boat is called a Katie Perry Or parrot fish
Coral trout and the green colour is parrot fish. They are very comman in Singapore
You can fix whit 1/4 or 1/2 fiber glass rod. Depending of rod to fix. Used epoxy to glued together. But this is just for extended the time of the fishing rod.
She said , Gorgeous white sand,, Palm trees, warm breeze...... * HInt HInt Hint* !!! LOL
I liked the vid......do any kind of show you want. It was entertaining and in good taste.
Is it me or does this guy always look scared when hes fishing?!?! Hahahahahahaha
Alwaaays makes him look like a rookie
question for ya: do you have a way to point us to those boat guides in the skiffs? We're staying at a beach in punta plata and want to see if someone can swing by and pick up our group each day. The anglers are extemely experienced. Thanks nice vid
Broke my St Croix too. Now I use Ugly Stiks exclusively.
I do not know the fish because am singaporean I recommend you to come Singapore to fish because Singapore have a lot of fishing spot and you can try your bait out here
you should try Jones point and Pohick Bay Park huge catfish pulled out of that water and in the summertime you can get sharks
+Josip Tubikanec in the DR?
we welcoming u guys at Bali for Fishing...hehe
oh thank you! we would love to go!! what kind of fish do you catch there?
mostly Red Snapper and Grouper, but different spot have different species, some time oso catch GT.
The first fish was a croaker and the second was a lizard fish. We have those in Florida too lol.
I don't know the exact species, but it is definitely in the croaker/drum family.
Agreed! Thanks for responding!
And I feel you on that broken rod. I had a $400 dollar fly rod and it snapped while I was casting.
+TheMasterCasters 😭😭😭 I was so mad dude. Bet you were torn up after your accident.
Yeah. I didn't freakout, but I just sat there at the creek for an hour just contemplating life and thinking, Why me?
Haha
Any ideas on why your rod snapped

Since when and where is St.Croix Triumph Surf Fishing Spinning Rod 9' cost $400.00?
Maximum is $200.00
Your second fish looks like a Grinner.... we have them in Sydney Australia... the colourful fish we catch reef fishing. They are wrasse... sad when a favourite rod breaks😥
It is time to visit Chile and do some chinook salmon fishing near Patagonia.
OMG! :D That dance!!!! Great job hahaha!
+Serge Marcoux Lmao. My sister?
Yes! :D hahaha
Can you do a video of how you take care of your tackle after fishing. And also you preparing your rigs?
I always rinse off my rod and reel with water from a bottle or even in the shower. i have a few of my rigs on the channel that I tie. I can make a video about it as well. Thank you for asking
thanks for posting this video because i was planning on to punta canna for fishing
So in Mauritius...the first one you caught is a Bomli (Bombay Duck) @10:45 its a "Vielle" and a "Cateau"
No, no it's not!
You guys, What about river fishing?
Offshore trip: Juvenile Yellow-mouth Grouper and Princess Parrotfish
What program do you use to edit your videos? Please let me know. Thanks
St Croix break pretty often. You give up a lot of durability when you go with graphite and carbon instead of fiberglass
That's why they have a nice warranty on them
Let's meet at Lake Anna. It'll be cool to see a video on a pontoon (they rent them there for a reasonable price.)
come down to North Carolina and go to The Biltmore Estate. its an awesome place. plenty of fishing near there. especially trout.
I wanna fish NC so bad! Especially the salt water there. Thanks for the reccomendation, I will have to check that out!
+Senko Skipper Yeah saltwater fishing here is pretty awesome. I'm getting into my busy season at work but maybe down the road we could use my family's house at the coast to fish out of.
+Nathan Buckner what times of year do the fish run through? What's running now? I think I wanna camp somewhere near there for a couple days.
+Senko Skipper some of the best fishing is in October and November. blues come thru then. not sure on all of them but there's plenty to fish for.
Legends 👏
Great editing skills! Love Senko Skipper crew
+fscii71 thanks for the suggestion, I will read up on that👍
looks like a fun trip. hope yall had a blast.
this channel is going to blow up!
It was a great time Andy.
