The thing that people are forgetting is that Cali is a free dog, which most pets are not today. She’s not kenneled up or restricted in any way. She’s free to run and get the play/exercise each day as she wants. At six years old she will naturally start the slow decline into old age. Cali is in her middle age now. This pupper is living a far better life than most pets. 😊

The only thing I don't love about dogs is that they don't live long enough. If we give them the best life we can and a dignified end to their time here with us, we can let them go in peace knowing we've done right by them. My yellow lab turned 15 in September in good health, but I know how blessed I am to still have her with me. She's slowed down with age, just like we all do.

Cali is the most loved dog and she lives outdoors in nature with her dad. She's well loved! By all of us!

@@colleenbrotherton2266 You bet I love cats! I have a very traumatised cat from animal shelter here in the Netherlands. This poor precious was over 10 months there and is my biggest friend now! She doesn't fear any human now! Jackson Galaxy eat my cat heart out!

My husband and I had said that about Cali awhile ago... she's just not a "puppy" anymore. And people making comments about her not getting enough play time, we don't see EVERYTHING that you do "on camera/video" right! LOL We love all your content. Your cabin is beautiful. Cali is in the best environment any dog could be in, a wild and free golden! She gets much more exercise adventure and fresh air than most. Her tail has probably turned around several hundred thousand times! She will be your best friend for many many more years. Our golden was born June 9, 2009 (13 1/2 yrs). She is definitely showing it but still has lots of “pup” left.

What better life could a dog ask for? Cali has woods to explore, wild friends to check in on and of course her Dad to keep an eye on and make sure he's ok! Shes got a long life remaining doing her job the way she loves it most!

@@Bretaxy 6 isn't that old for a golden retriever, I wouldn't call one "old" until they reach 8. Usually they make it to 10-12 years old.

I'm pretty sure that she'll receive a true golden tail once she'll join her dog-friends in the afterlife.
Not for a long time yet though, I believe that her condition is great.
With 72 I'm fit as a free roaming chicken, working on the land and doing garden maintenance, making sure to stay active, walking and cycling, and eat fresh clean food, since I was 23, choosing a study in nutrition and Eastern medicine. Turning away from a hippy life, squatting houses.
The best improvement of my health, and condition, cooking in a restaurant for 150 guests, for years.
As the oldest of 9 siblings I'm the only one without ailments, and physical restriction, for which I'm very grateful. I'm my own doctor and medicine woman 👩🌾
Please don't panic....she has just gotten out of the "crazy puppy stage" most of us are happy to have these working dog breeds settle down a little. She is fine! I have labs and I think they are similar. Love cold, slow way down in the heat & humidity. Cali is just perfect and you are a great "Master" !
I agree with you! I have working dogs. Seppala Siberian sled dogs and it takes about 5-6 years to get out of that crazy stage
I agree . When they are in that puppy stage they are hard to keep up with.

I'm watching this with a 12 year old Golden Retriever at my feet. They are fabulous dogs. Cali's living a great life, Good on you Shawn.
A note of encouragement. My dog, Buck, is 17 and 1/2 right now. He is a black lab. Respecting the timing in his life is part of what maybe has helped him come this far. It is, however, time for me to consult my Vet concerning him as he is having some difficulties. He is my best Friend.
Do please find a Holistic Naturopathic Vet, as there are many natural remedies that can help older dogs.

😭Cali is quite possibly the sweetest dog in the world. And, not sure who else notices but when ever there's a close up shot of her, I swear it looks as though she has a smile on her face. It's so heartwarming. She's definitely a happy girl.

Shawn, it is never a bad sign when an exuberant puppy matures into a best friend and the two of you understand each other's rhythms. I'm always glad to see Cali, and will continue to do so for as long as you can share her with us.
I can tell that you love your dog dearly and would do nothing to compromize her health in any way. When arthritis sets in you will be the first to see it. She's a lovely dog!!!
We had a Golden for 13 & 1/2 years she was the same as Cali, she would let us know what she wanted to do, even in her elder years if we got on the quad to go to the lake she was like a pup again and she was a big Goldie 26 inches at the shoulders & was 112 lbs & was healthy until around 12 yrs when her hips started to go, best dog we ever had & the smartest.
I have been watching your channel for 3 years, I rank Cali as absolutely the number #1 Happiest dog on RUclips.

I can't believe that Cali is about to be years old time has gone so fast. I think she does just fine I am sure she gets all the attention and exercise she needs. She is such a precious and happy pup her tail is always wagging.
My dog will be 13 in two days and I am so surprised how much energy he still has. I believe he is so active because I take him out in the bush as often as I can. He has been my overlanding partner his whole life. Cali is living such a beautiful life.

My dog(Nuno) is 12 years, she’s a half Nuuk dog and half border collie. She slowed down at 10 years old. Nuno gets Canosan pills that help a lot. She’s now like a 6 year old dog again. ❤️

Cali still has oodles of puppy in her with a good helping of love and adoration for her dad and family. Cali is the best dog.
Nothing touches my soul like a good dog. It's hard when they begin to show their age. Cali has touched and brought joy to MANY people throughout your journey Shawn and I thank you for involving her and making her a focal point of your channel. After a very hard year of dealing with a massive amount of health problems, including paralysis, incontinence, torn ACL's, total muscle atrophy, injured shoulders, chronic dehydration (I was giving her sub-q fluid injections 3x daily), kidney damage, losing sight in one eye and even developing bone cancer on her spine toward the end, my absolute BEST friend in the world, Abby ran out of steam and I had to bring her peace and relief on Oct 19. I still struggle with not having her with me, I mean she was my world and she soldiered through A LOT of issues this year and she did it for me. I tried to be optimistic through all the ups and downs and I believed that I could heal her growing list of ailments naturally and Abby knew that I wasn't ready to be on my own yet, so she muscled through it all for me, which is pretty humbling. I've lost dogs and humans in my life, people who were close to me, but nothing compares to the hole that Abby's departure has left in my heart, though the pain is slowly becoming slightly less intense. Anyway, my apologies, I don't mean to make this about me, just wanted to share my own related tribulation that I've recently experienced. That's the ONLY bad thing that I can find about dogs, they just don't live long enough. My girl was only 8.5 years old, so I can't help, but feel like I was a bit shorted and should have gotten at least a few more good years with her, but I AM extremely thankful for the time that we DID have together. Shawn, I pray that Cali still has plenty of time in this world with you, I know how much she means to you, and your viewers as well.

@@pamelasauers787 , thank you. I do miss her greatly, but she was beginning to suffer and now she doesn't have to deal with any of that anymore, so I find solace in that. Wherever she is at, I'm sure she is healthy and happy again and gets to be with all the other dogs in her happy place. I like to think that she's still checking in on me from time to time as well. Cali is living the life with you Shawn, and is mature enough to know her limits. She is always a joy to see whether asleep nearby or leaping after her decoy.

My black lab just turned 6 on the Dec. 1 and she too is slowing down. It is the transition to mid-life where she doesn't have to be so clownish, but has turned into a sweet, sweet lady that loves all people.
My dad always told me when campfire smoke would get me, smoke follows beauty.😄
Cali has a great life and no doubt, is well-cared for. My Goldens seem to remain in puppyhood until about 6 years.

Shawn. I love the look of your new cabin. It is quite a cozy feel and represents a TON of work. I have watched a lot of hours of your work and have a good idea of the incredible feat this has been. Cali is well loved by all of us and we appreciate all of your care of her and hers for you. What a precious dog. I told my daughter recently, that dogs are "pure of heart". I think that description fits them perfectly. The Lord says, "blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see the Kingdom of God".
I‘m with Mark Carroll, it‘s wintertime and you two did a looot of work in the past weeks. You should slow down a little bit and prepare a little bit for the next season…yes…it’s a lot to do, but you need to be healthy for that and calm down is an important part of a healthy body. I'd like to see the entire cabin in one continuous, uncut shot including the mudroom, stairway to the root cellar and root cellar itself. I can imagine what it looks like, but so far such an image only exists in my imagination.

She is love by many of us. She loves dad, fet hing, swimming and anything dad does, she's right there.

Know what you are feeling. Our dog of seven years was a German shorthair chocolate lab mix. Loved to fetch, would cry if we didn't throw his ball. He ran all out all the time, just layed down and died this week. So much sadness but know he had seven years of running free doing all he loved. Vet said it was either a blood clot or heart attack. Enjoy your dear Cali. We miss Gunner so much but grateful for all he brought into our life.

We totally get it. We have Opal with us on our private island in the Canadian wilderness, her favorite place to be. She is a Mexican rescue dog. Adorable, but sometimes a bit naughty.
Gosh, I’ve been with you since Cali was a puppy. Time sure flies. I remember our Golden, every birthday we would say, “ well, maybe when he’s 7 or 8 or 9, the puppy stage will be over. He lived to be 14. Actually did settle down the last few years. Enjoyed every minute. I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. Thanks for sharing.

my wife and I have had only goldens for the last 40 years . Unfortunately these beautiful creatures are not the healthiest of breeds . We lost another to Cancer on Monday . Rosie was our 6th and would have been 14 yesterday . We miss them all terribly . There will be others , we can't live without our Goldens and all of them wouldn't want it any other way . We rescued all of them and have applications in with three Golden Retriever rescues around the state of Florida where we live. We would also consider a pair that can't be separated .... Cali is a precious pup for sure and well taken care of ... Merry Christmas to all from Sunny Florida

My 16 year old Doxie, Max, is surely slowing down. It won’t be too long now, it makes me so sad thinking about it. Cali is a beautiful girl, and I have love for her. Boy, how we love our pups.

I've been watching your videos for a long time, at least two cabins ago. That being said, if something was to happen to Cali, it would upset me, I can't imagine the devastation you would feel. By the grace of God she has many years left. I do think though it would be beneficial to both of you to be thinking about getting another puppy to learn from Cali and be the one to take over her responsibilities when she can no longer. I look forward to many more years of your content. God bless you and your family.
She might be slowing down a little but she is still running and fetching and doing really well for 6 years old. Im sure she rests when she has too. We just love Cali.
I noticed a change after the heat stroke, you are fortunate to still have her. I lost one of my Great Pyrenees this past summer to a heat stroke. He was only 4 years old😢

It is terrible to lose any family member whether 2 or 4 legged. Lost my companion cat nearly 4 years ago & still miss him, then 9 months later 2 more family members died. One was a person & the other my daughter's diabetic beagle.

We have a yellow lab , Ginger who was a complete spaz and is now 8 and she just started slowing a bit. Last year we adopted a puppy who has become her best friend. They play all day long. I think Cali is just fine and introducing another pup may reawaken her inner puppy. ❤️

Alot of people don't understand a dogs life and their transitions throughout there life. There is nothing wrong with Cali at all. She has tons of free space to run, explore, have fun and most importantly, a companion that takes great care of her and loves her tremendously. I personally have a 9 yr old Siberian Husky that comes from a high pedigree that just recently lost her puppy coat. She is the best companion I could ever ask for. Yes, she is getting older, but let me tell you, she is no slouch at the same time. We adopted a new Siberian Husky pup 6 months ago and let me tell you, it's been awesome. My middle aged Husky gives the roughly one year old Husky far more than she can handle. But it is a ton of fun watching them. At the end of the day, dogs age just like any other species does. Dogs are no different than humans. They will mature over time and that is exactly what is happening with Cali now. She is just maturing.
Cali rocks Shawn. Yes, well, it's winter, the days are short and Cali wants more love. Doesn't surprise me at all. You take such good care of her.

he can no longer jump on and off my bed. I got him when he was a puppy 8 weeks old. He sleeps a lot lately.
