  • The history and expansion of RAAF Williamtown since its establishment during World War II is directly linked to the evolution of air power and the technological advances in tactical fighter and surveillance aircraft.
RAAF Base Williamtown’s location was selected in response to the emerging threat to the east coast of Australia during World War II. The base officially opened 15 February 1941 in order to provide protection for the Hunter region’s strategic port and steel manufacturing facilities.

Spent a couple of weeks up there when I was in Cadets (ATC) - Absolutely loved it !! Would highly recommend anyone with teenagers, to get them into the Air Training Corps.
I got to go flying, shooting an SLRL1A1, spent a couple of hours on a SAR Patrol Boat, flying in an SAR Irriquois chopper, explored a Sub at New'y harbour, watched F-18's doing bombing runs, learnt how to put out different types of fires, ate amazing food everyday. I can't imagine a better way to spend the school holidays !!
Wish I could do it again as an adult !

I would offer the guess that that has always been in the back of Dept of Defence's minds. After all, that's exactly how the Royal Navy got the British Government to approve the Invincible Class carriers back in the 1970's. They didn't call them "aircraft Carriers", they were officially proposed as "Through-Deck Cruisers" to operate "Helicopters" for the "anti-submarine role". Our LHD's came with the ski-jump as standard & apparently it would have "cost more" to have it removed. How convenient....

There are no official plans to do this, but after the 72 F 35 type As are all delivered the government is VERY likely to acquire an additional 28. They have been extensively examining the cost of upgrading the Canberra class so it can be VTOL capable, but at this stage the likelihood of it happening would be 15%, at best.

Well, you missed a critical bit....; Williamtown was an Aerodrome during WW-1, my maternal Grandfather learned to fly there in 1917 at the Aviation School of NSW, operated by William Stutts, using a couple of Curtiss "Jennys".
The Royal Aero Club of NSW awarded him an International Aviator's Certificate (# 96) in September '17 and on New Year's Eve he enlisted in the Australian Flying Corps.

@@GordonCunningham if I'm being honest two things I don't like about the loyal wingman.
I find it hard to believe everything on the loyal wingman is built in Australia. I get the feeling we use American technology on these, American computers, which means America knows exactly where we are at all times, we don't need an aircraft like that and it's just a waste of money, what Australia really needs is a loyal wingman that is stealth even with America, a loyal wingman man only Australia controls, For Australias home defense we need an aircraft that can have the option of attacking any country we need, I'm not saying we should attack any country but at least have the option if we ever need it, I bet these loyal wingman can't attack America! If so then it's just another waste of tax payers money just like the F35, we need America's permission to fly it,
Australia needs to focus on Australian built, RAAF always say's it wants more public support then maybe RAAF should build an all Australia aircraft we can be proud of, something we build for our future, something for our kids future,
I don't mean to be rude when I say this but I only wanna make a point.

You give the RAAF a $ and they give America a $ because they know they can't build nothing , they couldn't even build a kite without importing parts and a blueprints from overseas ..
