i know that this is a "how NOT to make an animatic" but i think you gave me a tip for something to actually do next time i'm planning one. make the thumbnail sketches so tiny that you physically can't add any detail so you don't take super long only on the thumbnails. it's genius, it's brilliant, i wish i had thought of that before

I originally used to use lined notebook paper and make rectangles before drawing out the idea, but then I'd never finish anything because once in the program I'd try to put so many more details... only this year have I thought to just take a picture of each individual thumbnail and draw over it to keep it simple lmao

Oh boyy, I relate quite a bit to it. Personally, I completely skip the no. 2, "planning" part, I just dissociate while staring blindly onto the wall, replaying and repeating the same song over and over, trying out different outcomes in my head. This part takes me quite a long time, but after few months I have perfect version of the video I want to make. Also - this process can be done with multiple song, so my playlists is basicly movie series for me, at this point XD
Personally I have a google doc. It contains a single table. On one side is the lyric. On the other is what will be on screen during the lyric. That is it. I do not thumbnail, I do not sketch, I do not storyboard. I completed an entire animatic that way and I was flying by the seat of my pants the entire month it took.
honestly, with the flaws you mentioned, i actually really like the kind of "raw" art like yours. and what makes this really perfect is the song. it's really fits the story. these whole combination make me cried hard (bonus point: i got to know zou shen and his angelic voice)

this was probably not your intention but this really inspired me to like,,, try and make my own animatic? it's set my expectations pretty realistically and i dont feel as much pressure to finish one. you broke down the process really well and it does feel like a much less scary process (somehow)
I felt the planning part so badly 😭 Sometimes your thoughts just get so messy, or you start making plans in 3 different places, because you write things down at the most random times and just use whatever's closeby Luckily the referencing got solved with 3d models now, there was this one time I took a reference pic of myself, holding an open umbrella in a low perspective, full-on loungewear looking like an absolute mess. Then when I was drawing the pic, a friend was watching it while I streamed it in a call, saw the ref pic in the background and was like "uuhhhh was that you?" Most awkward silence ever 😂😂

I once submitted a 90-something frame animatic in the span of a week to a class for a two-minute animation which I never actually finished by semester’s end. (Photoshop’s animation feature is my personal hell, and the encoder can eat my shoe.) That said, for better or worse, apparently they still show the animatic as an example for the class, so that’s worth at least some of the hell I went through to make it.

But because I recognise this so much, except I often get stuck on just listening to the songs and making a storyboard mentally - and then when I wanna write it out I get it all jumbled... But on the off-chance that I actually do manage to make a storyboard, it literally looks like you made it based on the one you showed here lol. I thought that was a sign that I wasn't doing good enough or wasn't motivated enough if I "couldn't even make the storyboard look good" or "professional" but seeing that this is also your starting point, and then how amazing your final product is makes me feel encouraged!

god, i'm a writer but I really felt that part at the end. my handwritting is chicken scratch, and if I don't rewrite my outlines into my computer in the next few days while it's still fresh in my mind, I will completely forget what I wrote and just waste that outline.

god, i'm a writer but I really felt that part at the end. my handwritting is chicken scratch, and if I don't rewrite my outlines into my computer in the next few days while it's still fresh in my mind, I will completely forget what I wrote and just waste that outline.

So,, I know this is supposed to be jokingly dissuading me from creating animatics but honestly this is the most motivated I’ve ever been to create my own animatic.

I honestly admire animatic creators. Around a week-ish ago I came to the conclusion that I’d like to create one, and my god it really does take a lot of planning. ESPECIALLY since you’re not always going to have all the references you need so it’s like ?!?! Anyways, very helpful video, ty!
