In Jamaica some years ago there was the same issue of aggressive hawkers. You would get the "Jamaican Handshake", where they would shake your hand and then not let go. My wife learned to dress down in town, slightly shabby, with her hair under a hat.. And I got some reflecto sunglasses for us, because if they could not see your eyes it put them off.
I am a Tanzanian and have been to Zanzibar and I can say I genuinely hate hawkers, I mean yes it's business and people always trying to sell their products but it exhausting and not just to tourist even when you are a local and doing an inside tour, and the thing about negotiating prices it's like Tanzanian culture which I hate, they don't do this to just to tourist even to locals the price depends on how you look but being a Tanzanian I know how to handle it and I always gets the actual price. ps; they say to you something is 50 US dollars you say I have 15 and trust me they will try to go tell you to add more money but always add two dollars more until you reach half the price they told you because it's always the actual price. and if they say no just leave and go to another place, they will try to stop you and sell to you at the price you said or selling to you at the actual price. But also be aware some will always tell you the actual price and if you negotiate they will not decrease the price at all then know it's the actual price. and another thing you can do try to make friend with local tourist you meet and ask them to help you with prices or sometimes you can ask them to guess for you an actual price for something

Beautiful beaches there but I totally know what you mean about the Hawkers. You summed it up well when you said it was ‘exhausting’. I said to my girlfriend when were there that it was tiring been constantly sold too
I've spent a short week in Zanzibar after development work in East Africa. While I agree with most of your points, there is one thing I found expensive, and that was travelling around the island. There seems to be a scarcity of options between renting a private taxi, which are ridiculously expensive between cities and being squeezed in dala dala (collective bus), which will take twice the time. It seems even diving centers and other tourist place don't have the notions of shuttle cars or sharing taxis, which would allow to cut the price by 2 to 4 times.
I hate hawkers. We have a lot of them in my country, too. I actually refrained from choosing arab countries like Egypt for this exact reason. at least in zanzibar, it's a tropical island, so the beauty helps you heal the annoyance.
I am about to travel to Zanzibar with my wife and son. I really appreciate your tips and advise. You did a wonderful job and I would encourage you to continue. Let you know when I return - how the trip went. I will miss Full Moon by 2 days. O well.
Hi Christine i enjoy your video since you are in zanzibar you should visit Seychelles it in island it is a 2 hour flight we got the best beach we are closed to Mauritius and Reunion island Seychelles looks like Hawaii very safe county
Zanzibar is very beautiful but you're absolutely right... it is EXHAUSTING being constantly (and I do mean CONSTANTLY) hounded by hawkers and touts. It can be so difficult to get a moment's peace. They are known as "papasi" - which is Swahili for 'ticks' - and you will come to understand why. They are tenacious little bloodsuckers who will not leave you alone no matter how many times you tell them to go away. You cannot even go to a bar for a quiet drink because someone will sit down next to you immediately and try to sell you something. And there really isn't anyone on the island who isn't running some kind of hustle. I'm glad I went but I would never go back.

Hi what are the drone laws for Zanzibar. There’s no clear info on the internet and I’m thinking of buying a drone and I really don’t want customs to seize it 🥺
Great question! It's one of the only places in Africa that has clear(ish) drone laws. You have to register it with the equivalent of their FAA and it generally takes 60 days. Their govt website has all the info on it!

Thank you for your videos about Zanzibar! - I’m going there this February. Question: do you think you were approached by locals selling things more frequently because you are a woman?
Super exciting that you're going in Feb! Tbh, I'm not sure... I kind of felt like everyone got the same treatment, but I'm wondering if someone else in the comments may have an experience they can share?
a great question! at the time in which I traveled there no test was required, but Id keep up with their govt website because rules are changing all the time!
currently, they don't require a corona negative test result but just read the Tanzania embassy website from where you are or the Tanzania international Airpot ( Julius Nyerere International Airport) to get an update, and bear in mind that you might get tested at the airport that's all.
In all the places I visited on the island, I only had the choice of using Tanzanian shillings. There are places you can exchange your dollars and better rates are given to larger bills (ie 50s and 100s vs. 20s and 10s)
Another thing change your dollar into Tanzanian Shillings before you go to the island (let's say you if land first at mainland Tanzania) because the exchange rates at the island are quite high unless you find a Bank and it's not possible to find a bank at Nungwi or Paje, so just be ready with that.

thanks for sharing your opinion!
u cant compare Oahu and Zanzibar, Oahu is american standard and looks modern and clean...btw I like your video but still its uncomparable
well... you could equally say you can't tell me what i can and can't compare. lol. any comparison should be based on what someone has experienced. if i compared two things i have NOT experienced.. eee.... that's questionable.
Can you send me the scam video
Ooo I made available to everyone (for now) - there is a link in the description of this video to it!
