As far as I am aware the only tourist tax or levy you need pay is paid directly to your hotel. Last time I checked hotels are required to charge a government tax of $5 a head per day. Most hotels include this tax in their room price, others might charge you separately. If anyone else asks you to pay a tourist tax it is probably a scam.

Some hotels have them, and some do not. It will be indicated when you are booking online. Be sure taxes and fees ARE INCLUDED, and the price will be what’s advertised.

Ok this is a tricky one online booking g doesn't include the $2 city charge but reservations via email includes the charge. I was then given the option to pay it on arrival. I am assuming this fee goes to the hotel and no other service provider on the island right?

I wanted to travel solo, but that idea no longer sounds like the plan for me. I do have a question in regards to the Yellow fever vaccination. Is it a requirement for all travelers visiting Zanzibar/Tanzania to be vaccinated? Thanks for all of the intrinsic/valuable tips! You’re the BEST!! Subscribed! 🥰

THANK YOU, this comment means so much to me! I appreciate you watching, Candice! I think solo travel CAN be done here.. I just.. didn't feel super comfortable. Re: yellow fever, my understanding is tanzania MAIN LAND requires it, but there was a chance that zanzibar would be requiring it as well. I got mine because I had heard horror stories of people coming in, NOT having it, and either 1. having to wait a very very long time to get it at the airport or 2. not being allowed in because the doctor at the airport had left for the day and they needed to wait overnight until the doctor returned to get it. -- all that said, for me personally, I didn't want to risk it, and made sure to get it.

@KB yes I have been going 2013 atlear once a year , they did away with it in 2016.
and we went this year for Christmas and new years and no yellow fever was needed.
they did want to see covid negative test on arrival.
however when we left that was not even a requirement.
Look it's your trip if you don't go often and you unsure get it.
even when it was mandatory travel nurse never gave it to me as I have autoimmune issue and that jab would just make me sick.
being sick on holidays is just not fun.
do take your Nirmal traveling meds with you.
as you can get sick or stung ect.
over December we were at a resort with kids with chest infections so ofcourse we caught it too.
cold and flue meds immune boosters ect.
      have a fantastic time.

I didn’t experience what you did. But I did experience these things: One being at the resort. I would go to the beach at the resort and be harassed by the locals to buy anything from a tour to water shoes. I’m from NYC so basically when I say no, I mean it. I can smell a scam. You can’t pressure me into a thing. The next thing I am currently experiencing while planning my trip back is the local tour companies price gouging. They tried to charge an arm, leg and kidney for tours that I can pay $20 for. And I already paid for my villa. So one person tried to charge me $3,500 per person for some tours and a flight from kilamanjaro to Zanzibar. And when I go on viator the tours are a fraction of the price. My accommodations are a fraction of the price. Then he says to secure your spot for next year, send $3000. That’s a no! I planned my whole trip myself and it will cost me a fraction of what these companies based in Zanzibar will charge. It’s best to book directly with the hotels.

About the getting pulled over, it is something very common
I got that in Venezuela when I went back in 2017 and my dad experienced it in Brazil and Colombia back in 2016
Dominican Republic also has this. I know Spanish so I let them know I’m not totally a tourist and they leave me alone.
For the sunscreen ; some tourist destinations do that. They empty the bottles and fill the rest with water and charge an abnormal price for it.
So don't even bother buying them at touristy places. This also happens with alcohol.
Kids are as pickpockets as the parents. most off the time the parents are around the corner staking out. Those kids are NEVER alone! Experienced this in Dominican Republic!

some restaurants make you to pay service charge of 10% which is up to you if you want to pay it or not. you can deny it and can pay maybe 2-3% of the total bill as a tip. And one thing more if you order drinks in large numbers for example 12-15 bottles of beers for your group, make sure to check quantity before paying, in my case they made four extra.

The foreigner price is 3 or 4 times more than the local price. I get quite upset about this because I know what most of the local prices are. 1- tourist fees - technically that's only at the hotel, they have to take care of so many stuff, water treatment, garbage and so on.
Is unclear where you did paid for tourist fees. If was at hotel then is fine.
I will travel to Paje on June 2024, I will pay tourist fee at the hotel 160€, it's fine and normal.
2 - credit cards? On a third word country?
Have you heard of "Cash is king"?
I always travel with cash only, I have my own methods to keep my money safe, without a safe box.
I always pay in cash, I need no extra fees, or surprises, when the system is down, or even worse, your card can be cloned.
Cash is cash, I have never got problems using that.

The corruption of the Zanzibari police is legedary, just ignore them or ask them to identify themselves with IDs and badges, they do not expect that. Never pay them anything. Children are not pickpocketing, just trying to beg. In my experience, food is fine, especiallyin small local restaurants. I have never had bad experience. Do not help Maasais.

Majority of what you said are false. No children pickpocketers, food is fresh unless for imported items such as pork, sausage, and the likes. Hygiene is a norm here due to religious reasons. Alcohol is imported and most touristic spots are own and supervised by Europeans.

The last topic, what was that? You being nervous, has nothing to do with the island. I did not get any value out of this, other than your audio quality was poor. You mentioned that people commented on your tulum video, thinking you hated it there. I understand why, you literally reminded me of those cliche bored women gossiping at a fence in a suburban area..I don’t want to say something negative, BUT. And that throughout the whole video.

some restaurants make you to pay service charge of 10% which is up to you if you want to pay it or not. you can deny it and can pay maybe 2-3% of the total bill as a tip. And one thing more if you order drinks in large numbers for example 12-15 bottles of beers for your group, make sure to check quantity before paying, in my case they made four extra.
