Ruddy Turnstone Feeding Techniques

  • Ruddy Turnstone, arenaria interpres, feeding techniques are more varied than their name suggests. Turnstones do indeed frequently turn stones to look for prey items which include small insects, crabs and crustaceans, but they also use other feeding strategies. Other Turnstone feeding techniques include picking prey from the water, flicking seaweed aside, opening shellfish and ploughing through seaweed. In this video I show you these feeding techniques and suggest a tongue-in-cheek alternative name for Ruddy Turnstones. Turnstones are one of the most charismatic species of shorebirds, often becoming quite tame and are found all over the world.

Hello Friend how are you?. This bird is fascinating, I could always see it from far away, but I have been able to capture it with its typical behavior of turning stones, it is a super interesting bird. Great video friend. Thank you so much for sharing it. I send you a big hug and I wish you a very good day. Regards

Hi, thanks for watching. Glad you enjoyed the Turnstones. I got close to these ones by just sitting quietly close to where they were feeding and waiting until they came close. They pretty much ignored me. All the best.
