  • Bryan Williams MSG 50th Anniversary pickups in a Joe Bonamassa Lazarus Epiphone Les Paul. Marshall volume 5 (fairly clean and bright cap very in play), presence on 5, bass on 4, mid on 5, treble on 4 . Bellepoch Delux for slapback delay and that's it!

Bryan is out here BTW. He's a super nice guy and has answered some of my questions from time to time.

I got his 1973 set. Ordering pre 72 set from him when he’s ready. Something I’ve noticed is JP’s original bridge pickup had a “squealy” quality to it when used. Not the same cleaner crunch T Top had.

Great tone! Do you have bypassed wah-wah in your lineup?

Keeping the bright vol(straight into the top left input) of my stock 71 1987 on 6 or above, combined with never maxing the guitars bridge vol, and putting the TMP on 3 and Bass on 10, solved any harshness issues. 6 or above on the amp vol starts negating the aggressive bright cap.
The guitar tone controls helps too.
Keeping the guitars bridge vol around 7-9 really fattens up the crunchy rhythms and Pagey/Angus style solos. Most of the harshness lives at 10 on the guitar vol.
Helps that I’m using Pulsonic Greenbacks but it will work with any decent speaker.
Also, I’m using a LP Special with stock P90’s that’s very bright and midrangey on the bridge pickup.

Very nice! Bryan's pickups are great I'm probably gonna grab a pair I have a Crews LP best 59 replica I've played I found it naturally has the page tone but so interested in Bryan's in person. Is that a JTM?

Thanks! I just love these pickups. It's a 100watt 1959HW reissue but I put NOS Mullard tubes in it.

You certainly did your homework with getting the Bonamassa and Bryan's '73 pickups. Nice bend-vibrato by the way.

What brand pots/values are you running in this guitar? That's a beautiful guitar BTW. I see it's even got the claw marks from JB's original.

Thank you! I really love this guitar, Epiphone and Joe did such a great job with it and the long neck tenon makes it very desirable I think. I did change out the pots and caps to a pre wired kit from RS guitar works. Here are the specs on the kit from their website:
      What's in the kit:
      (2) 500K RS Short-Shaft SuperPots®- We designed these pots in conjunction with CTS. Used for the volume controls in the kit, these pots have a custom taper that gives you a noticeable difference between each number on your volume control. You can finally roll your volume down to 2 or 1 and not loose any clarity, even in the neck position!! Mil-spec construction and a smoother resistor path make this the best pot to ever be used in the guitar.
      (2) 500K CTS Short-Shaft Audio taper pots.
      (2) Vintage RS GuitarCap Paper In Oil Capacitor. Manufactured to RS specs, these hand-made 100v caps have a rich vintage tone, while still retaining open top-end clarity. Hand-wound on 50's-era machines, the new RS Vintage GuitarCaps use vintage-correct Kraft paper, solid military-spec construction and tinned 20AWG leads for easy soldering. They really hold their own against the vintage caps; their tone is similar to the famous caps from the 50's.

Thanks for the info! Yes RS looks good. I’m jealous of that guitar. I looked at one online and it doesn’t have the same flames top as yours. I didn’t know they were long tenon. That’s a keeper for sure.

I am a big fan of your videos and especially the Page tone quest ones :) I also own a Marshall 1959hw and find it is sometimes difficult to get around that bright cap. I appreciate any tips on how to get the page tone and especially msg through that amp! Thanks for some great content and please keep it coming :) all the best

This amp can sound really bright and harsh. I've struggled with the same thing. I'll do a rundown of what I think works the best but of course it's not quite the exact time once RUclips processes and compresses everything. I'll let you know when I get it done. 👍

Basically turn the amp up so it’s dirtier than you’d normally use with the guitar vol on full, then turn it(the guitar) down until you get the gain you want. It will not only clean up the tone, it will smooth it out also.
