Kris, not gonna lie, the old set definitely had some raunchy charm of their own IMO. But for recording in a mix, I can totally see how the new set works better. Great video, as always!
Interesting. I have these and didn't think they were anything special, I mean I have BRe Knuckle Peacemakers in one Les Paul and they are phenomenal and the I have these in another and SD Magic Greens in another. All are different but all are equally great, saying one blows the other out the water is a strange claim
Both pickups sound really good! I preferred the older ones. The older ones just had more grit to them. They also sounded a little darker and I just genuinely love darker sounding guitars. But it’s what matters to you tho bro and I think you made a fantastic decision!
Absolutely outstanding pickups. I have a Standard version set in my Les Paul for exactly the same reasons as you and I'm so pleased with it that I'm considering putting a Low Wind version set in my SG. Great video, as usual!
I’ve been using Mojotone pickups since 2014 and haven’t looked back! I have the low wind ‘59s in my 335, the standard winds in my R7, and the hot bridge set in my DGT. I’ve shot them out with real ‘59 PAFs and the difference was marginal at best IMO
Mojotone has really surprised me lately, ordered a set of the Bill Kelliher pickups to put in my own Les Paul just yesterday after testing them out. Glad we're getting more contenders with Pickups too, love my Duncans and such but the more options the better.
Did you use gibson potis for the mojotone humbuckers? I also want to install the Hellbenders in my Ibanez Rg and replace the fishmans. Not sure about which wiring to get.
Mojotone makes amazing stuff! I put in the Rene Martinez set in my Strat and haven’t looked back! Always getting compliments and it ended my search, was never happy with the single coils until then. Enjoy Kris!
@@KrisBarocsi I’m curious about the new Bare Knuckle/Rabea Massaad pickups with the steel baseplates, so I bought some steel to make into base plates to try on the Rene Martinez pickups, but haven’t done it yet. They sound a bit like a thicker, mellower version of the Silver Sky pickups. If you are looking for hot or super spanky pickups, these aren’t it.
Hi kris! A lot of musicians especially the yonger generation forget that the les paul was conceived as b bop, jazz in other words for clean sounds in the 50s. It just happened that professionals got that blues, rock sound in the late 60s. by cranking there amps I also use low wind Humbuckers there are more articulate and compress less. As always great playing kris. 👌 👍🙏
What i ear is a more mellow and warm tone on both the neck and the bridge Mojotone (somethin added in the low-mid area) and a more soft and less snappy attack transient under the pick. Yeah... i like the Mojo more than the old ones.
And I so much understand you, I've spent enormous amount of time changing pickups and looking for the tone I like. Thank god I found one that made me stop searching :)))) If I'd had Les Paul, I'd definitely tried these Mojos :) Getting older I'm digging more and more vintage, cleaner and lower gain tones:)
I have experienced that as well. How I handle the bass response on the neck PU.....remove the 6th string pole screw. I know, I can hear peoples faces melting off. Just try it, for a week and see if that doesn't fix the bass issue. If that is not for you, just simply screw it back in place, and be unhappy.
I installed the 59 clone in the neck position on my Les Paul and was blown away with the chime and fullness of the pick up. Went and installed another one on my Eastman hollow body neck position (replacing Bare Knuckle old guard) and was in heaven with the tone.. Highly recommend this pick up in the neck position
I bought them based on your review to replace some burstbucker pros and I didn't like them at all. They sound very compressed, lack dynamics and they feel very "stiff" and "hard" ... definitely didn't have the spongy feeling of a real PAF and I did play a lot of them. Also, I found them quite "neutral" and flat sounding without any character (probably due to their Alnico 4 magnets). I definitely prefer Gibson Classic 57 over these. They have great dynamics, sound spongy and have an authentic PAF feel with great mids that add character. On the positive side, the mojotones are quite clear with excellent articulation (altough the basse notes on the neck pickup are not the most impressive). I don't recommand these at all.
I have the regular wind Mojotone 59 Clones in a Gibson LP Tribute with 50's wiring and they sound great. I have recently bought several Eastman SB59's, all with Seymour Duncan 59's in them. They sound great, too, but I have a Heritage H-150 with those as well, giving me 4 guitars with the same pickups. So I ordered a set of the low wind Mojotone 59 Clones for one of them, and a set of Tonerider Rebel 90's (fantastic humbucker sized P90s) for another. I also have the Mojotone 56 Quiet Coil P90s in a Les Paul and Mojotone Mojo'trons in a Gretsch, and they are both excellent pickups as well. I don't think you can go wrong with any Mojotone product. I might get a set of the Quiet Coil Broadcaster pickups for a Tele style guitar I have.
Hi Kris. The new bridge pickup sounds really close to the old one tonally, and reducing the output makes it more versatile and controllable. As for neck ones, maybe I am wrong, but for me, it sonds like they not only have reduced low frequencies, but the volume of the low strings as well. I would probably fiddle with the height of the pickup or polpieces a bit. However, the new set sounds awesome, so congrats on the update!!!
I actually liked the old ones better. On the very lowest frequencies the new ones sounded slightly better but on the rest of the frequencies I preferred the stock pickups. I am listening on a pretty good set of studio monitors, not a cell phone if you are wondering.
Hi Kris, For old neck pickup try capacitor in series before volume potentiometer. It cuts off some low end mud. Begin with 47nF then try 22nF and so on. You will find best value for you. I added this mode in my les paul with P90. I use 15nF capacitor for neck pickup, 10nF is also ok. For bridge pickup, maybe treble bleed...good luck!
My ‘03 Standard Plus has a set of 59 Clones, which are excellent, mI made them excellenter (?) with a neck magnet swap, landing on an A2 pulled from a Burstbucker. Great video, thanks for your time.
Love the sounds you're getting! But for me, the old pickups and the new Mogotone are satisfying. Though the Mogotone is cleaner or brighter and a tinge too much that way. But it was minimal but the old ones I could live with. Interesting video comparison. Great playing!
This is one of several reviews of these pickups and I really like them. I have a D’Angelico DC Mini and the neck pickup is also quite bass-heavy so this might be just the thing for me. Great review!
Its just the A4 vs A2 magnet that makes it a brighter in this case. Buy some magnets and experience A3 A5 long short etc lots of tone options that way.
This is exactly why I had to part ways with the Tonerider AC2s I had in my Gibson Les Paul Standard 50s. Faaaar to much bass for my liking... FWIW the Burstbucker 1&2s were too bright as well. Turns out the Probucker 1&2's with magnets sawpped to A4 or A5 produced the exact tone I wanted. Worth a try if you have an older Epiphone knocking about. Fantastic pickups!
Oh man, these are right up there. So glad I found these. There are other really really good ones too of course, but I definitely found the ones that work perfectly with my LP. Cheers!
To my ears the old pups had more dynamics, and the new ones were more compressed and balanced sounding. Guess depends on your rig, playing style and uses of the gtr. I'm considering new pups for my Lester too, and these Mojotone's got on the list along with the Thornbuckers.
Never loved the Custom Buckers in my R9 (B9 actually, GC Burstbrothers), always felt there was something missing in terms of clarity/balance- but the '59 Clones brought the guitar to life!
Sounds terrific. I wouldn't put anything higher powered than these into a Les Paul. If you have too much output you get this muddy mid clash with a Les Paul or other mahogany guitars. You want a pickup that's bright enough to balance well. But not overwhelming.
57 and 57 plus for me. If I did the journey all over again I'd get 6 EVH Standards and load them with different pickups instead of having 6 different guitars.
Kris, I haven't tried the Skinner pickups or the Mojotones, but you always sound great. The Skinners are slightly overwound but have Alnico III magnets. I wonder how they compare to the standard Antiquities, which are not wound quite as hot but use Alnico II magnets. You inspired me months ago to check out some lower output SD Antiquities for my Eastman 59, and they are perfect for that guitar.
Kris, the content is really nice to see.. and thank you. On pickups, I always like to match them on the covers.... personal preference. I ended up picking up the Toxic Twin and recently a decibelics Golden Horse. Absolutely the finest Klon type sound I have ever heard. Ever. Take care and keep jamming.... have to refret my 1990 Greco with dry pickup. Lightning on standby.
Have now ordered these set Mojotone 59 Clone Low Output, two black colored. For my third Les Paul built . I am very curious how it will sound, and looks in the end.
Listened to the examples a few times with really good headphones and the Mojotone's have a better balanced tone overall. The Seymour in the bridge and the RV in the neck were good but they did not have the vintage sweetness and balance of the MT set. What is funny is i had been seeing quite few players that have been through the PAF repro hunt all say they liked the Mojotone clones the most. they had tried Wizz, Throbak,OX4 and a few others and the only other pickup winder that was equal to Mojo was stephens designed and that is really saying something because his pu's are a two year wait and they are big bucks!
I got a set for my LP from a guy in Tucson called Sonoran Customs. Low powered PAFs. Uses raw mags. Wish I found these 40 yrs ago. 😂. The Mojos sound great too. I’m just cheap.
Not sure I woulda swapped, but the tinkerer in me might have gotten my best. In fairness you had some really good pickups to start with. I bet huge improvement over stock mudbuckers
Hey, I don’t think so. It feels more comfy though. Hahaha! Tuning stability mainly depends on the nut and the bridge saddle. Not just the material but also the way the slots are carved. Overwrapping the strings just change the angle of the strings at the tail piece.
I have the '59 clone bridge, but it's higher output version. In the neck I have been he '59 clone but I believe it has an Alnico III magnet. They're slightly wax potted because I got squeal outside at gig volume. They're great.
They were not a large difference. The Mojos just have more clarity from what I can tell, but the old pups are good also. I have a set of the Mojos sitting around htat I need to install in a Epi 335...
Trying new things is fun and educational. And mojotone makes good stuff. My Jackson Rhoads is filthy and gritty no matter how clean the amp is. I’m planning to remove the active mid boost and try some lower output pups if that’s not enough to get to sparkly cleans.
The mojo in the neck has a very hifi quality on the top. I preferred the more grimy chime of the old. But I could see why the low end would be an issue.
Been having similar low end issues with my less paul but instead of humbugers I'veen looking into P90 style pickups in humbuger sizing. Any comments or already a video on those? Also been planning to move the current pickups to my es335 "china copy". I've understood that semihollow would maybe tame the low end but I guess time will tell.
Maybe a slight difference when clean. That difference shrinks when you added gain to the signal. Those differences could be adjusted on a mixing desk anyways.
Wow, this american almond knows his latin. 😆 The old ones are killer too, that’s why I used them for like 7 years. But I‘m getting older and like it less aggressive, hahaha!
Yup i like better the mojotone set, less muddiness in neck pup and cleaner sparkling bridge pup and a little bit more mid hump either,i think all depends what style you play
I prefer Seymour Duncan pickups in most instances exactly because they don't have that obnoxious mid hump. Every overdrive clone on the market (SD-1, Klon, Tubescreamer, modded BD-2s, even some Blues Breaker clones) have mid and mid-high humps built in. That allows you to more than compensate for whatever mid-loss is in a traditional PAF design. It's exactly the scooped mids that make a PAF a PAF, and I don't understand the obsession over the last 5-7 years of making a PAF with a mid hump, then running the mid-pronounced LP design into a mid-heavy Klon into a mids-forward Marshall. How many mids does a player need? Then again, my preferences versus yours are exactly why there are so many pickup designers in the market, so if the ubermids tone makes you happy, then go for it.
@@avispasentuass I will also admit my Heritage H-150 has a DiMarzio 36th Anniversary PAF. It's a mid-forward, slightly hot PAF that wouldn't be to Kris's taste, but I do like it. I just have to tone down the mids on my pedals when I use it. That mid-forward PAF tone also sounds great through a cab emulator with Vintage 30s (or something like them).
Great comparison! I've changed the PUs in my Les Paul to a set of Suhr Aldrich pickups. They have massive output but I also changed the pots to CTS push pull ones so I can split the pickups independent of each other. By doing this I can get absolutely clean sounds out of these killer pickups. This guitar now is ready for heavy drop C metal riffs as well as sparkling clean ambient stuff... I love it 😊
I didn't like the ones I bought a few months back. It didn't have that PAF style growl I have grown to like with the current pickups I use for PAF style tones. You make them sound good tho..
The 59 Clones are amazing. I have a set of the three different versions. Hot, Standard and Low wind. The low wind set sounds so good in my CS‘64 ES 335. I have the Hot set in my R9. These pickups are so much more articulate than the CS Custombuckers.
You tried the various methods with the old pickup like flipping the neck pickup around so the screw pole pieces were facing towards the bridge instead of the neck, and lowering the pickup body and raising the screw pole pieces to get more clarity and articulation, right? With modern Modelers, even mediocre pickups can be dialed in to sound awesome through the right Cab/Speaker. 🤷♂
Hi Kris - I am considering the Mojotone low winds for my Les Paul (currently stock BurstBuckers) for reasons similar to yours. To address fatness in the Gibson Les Paul neck position (and looking for more openness as you were) have you considered replacing the neck pickup tone control with a passive bass rolloff control / circuit ? I am deciding between the two ideas. thanks
On very good HiFi headphones , very little difference and I personally preferred the old set but lower output could be attained with turning volume down a bit. Each there own and in the room would feel diferent
Hi Kris.Have you choose the bridge pickup uncovered to avoid the "bad feedback" of the unpotted pickup (microphonic with high gain)? I've the set of Mojotone (regular output with cover) and the bridge has the famous "mechanic feedback" with high gain. Thanks
the new pups sounded brighter and more articuled, I liked them better, thanks for sharing your experience :D .I just bought a pair of T-Tops and I´m eager to try it on my LP standard or ES333 (coincidentally both currently have 490R and 498T), I´m still not sure which guitar will benefit the most with the swap, I´m guessing the lower output and more balanced frequencies of the t-tops will serve better the ES than the LP. Do You have any advice?
I can tell right away you just have to lower the neck pickup a little. your going to have to mass around with the pickup height and the screws a little on the pickup but you will be able to dial it in.
Just the video I needed when I am in a search for some new PUs for my Gibson... :P Sounds very good... But have you compared these with the Lollar Imperials maybe? Or if you tried a different guitar with the Lollars how would you describe the differences between the Mojos and the Lollars?
Hello Kris phenomenal demo and playing as usual. Im thinking of putting these in my prs s2 mcarty594 singlecut. The stock (PRS 58/15 LT “S) sound a bit muddy to my ears. Do you think it would be a noticeable upgrade? Do you have anything else to recommend? Thank you in advance
The Ltd Edition SKinnerbursts I have in my Classic, are adjusted to be able to be clean. and still have that 'lively' tone. Not sure why yours seem so hot. But you mentioned Antiquities. Mine were from the Joe Bonamassa Skinner burst limited edition run of a few 100. Not really Antiquities. Frankly, I preferred your old set over the Mojotones. Yes, the old Neck could get boomy in your samples, time to time. But you got rid of that, at the expense of a more overall meh tone, imho. On the Bridge, I don't think either was better or worse. Just slightly different. In the head to head, the Skinnerbursts wasn't any hotter than the Mojotones.
I just wonder the e and a still sounds very low to my ears :) I wonder if a treble bleed in this case would have done the job but what do I know. I have a Tokai love rock made in Japan. Something was wrong maybe with the production the neck pickup can be deep enough or it’s just overwhelming. Muddy and to low whatever I do. I changed to a good harness from Jackson audio and Gibson 57 classics while bridge is perfect neck still not optimal :(
Where did you get the mixed set (zebra + aged nickel) from? Love the look but T only has matching sets and the Mojotone website doesn’t show these either :(
Hi, they only show the matched sets because 99% of the buyers wouldn’t ever choose a mixed set. 😅 I get it, it’s not the classic „clean“ look. If you want to mix you can get the neck and bridge separately and combine the looks as you wish. 👍 Cheers!
Hello......it looks like your plain strings aren't anywhere close to centering up over the pole pieces of the new pickup or is it just how it looks? Probably doesn't matter much.
Kris, not gonna lie, the old set definitely had some raunchy charm of their own IMO. But for recording in a mix, I can totally see how the new set works better. Great video, as always!

Hey, I don’t think so. It feels more comfy though. Hahaha!
Tuning stability mainly depends on the nut and the bridge saddle. Not just the material but also the way the slots are carved. Overwrapping the strings just change the angle of the strings at the tail piece.
@@KrisBarocsi Ahh I see ok hahah tnx for answer
I have the '59 clone bridge, but it's higher output version. In the neck I have been he '59 clone but I believe it has an Alnico III magnet. They're slightly wax potted because I got squeal outside at gig volume. They're great.
They were not a large difference. The Mojos just have more clarity from what I can tell, but the old pups are good also. I have a set of the Mojos sitting around htat I need to install in a Epi 335...
Trying new things is fun and educational. And mojotone makes good stuff.
My Jackson Rhoads is filthy and gritty no matter how clean the amp is. I’m planning to remove the active mid boost and try some lower output pups if that’s not enough to get to sparkly cleans.
outstanding sounding pickups!
I'm not a professional but i liked the older ones better....oh well. "De gustibus non est disputandum" 🤘🤘🤘
Wow, this american almond knows his latin. 😆 The old ones are killer too, that’s why I used them for like 7 years. But I‘m getting older and like it less aggressive, hahaha!
Same, i think older PU are better.. Deeper and more bass.

@@KrisBarocsino more metalcore riffage?
@@KrisBarocsi have you tried wizz premium clone?
Nice tones Luke always
@@revolead very true i use just 1 pedal with my friedman jj jr my les paul has enough mids 490r/498t
I am deciding between the two ideas. thanks
I love under wound pafs… stock Les Paul pickups are always too wooly and lack clarity. Definitely like the new set 👍👍👍
Reducing the volume on the guitar not the amp wld clean it up...💚🎸
On very good HiFi headphones , very little difference and I personally preferred the old set but lower output could be attained with turning volume down a bit. Each there own and in the room would feel diferent
Hi Kris,
Are these the 59 clones or the low output 59 clones?
And why did you choose that over the other?
Hope to hear from you!
Hi Kris.Have you choose the bridge pickup uncovered to avoid the "bad feedback" of the unpotted pickup (microphonic with high gain)? I've the set of Mojotone (regular output with cover) and the bridge has the famous "mechanic feedback" with high gain. Thanks
Kris, did. you try the Suhr Thorn Buckers. They should fit your needs. Open sounding, clear, articulate, tight bass but yet sweet & dynamic?
the new pups sounded brighter and more articuled, I liked them better, thanks for sharing your experience :D .I just bought a pair of T-Tops and I´m eager to try it on my LP standard or ES333 (coincidentally both currently have 490R and 498T), I´m still not sure which guitar will benefit the most with the swap, I´m guessing the lower output and more balanced frequencies of the t-tops will serve better the ES than the LP.
The mojo ones are more natural and uncompressed with a clean end, better for me than the old ones.
Habe in meiner H150 von 1993 goodtone Pickups verbaut. Kennt leider keiner, sind sehr geil....
Mojo tone sounded very nice in bridge to me!
I just ordered a set for my LP custom.
Beautiful playing, you don’t suck at playing the guitar at all!! 👏🏻😅
Beautiful guitar, I do like the new pick ups better, they seem cleaner, crisp?!
I’ll put a Set of Suhr Doug Aldrich in my LP Custom. 😊 best pickup for Les Paul’s i.m.o.
I like my Doyle Coils TRU-CLONES PAF HUMBUCKERS.
The old pickups sounded pretty good too. You should sell them on Reverb.
I like the new neck better but the old bridge pup sounded better on gain.
I changed to a good harness from Jackson audio and Gibson 57 classics while bridge is perfect neck still not optimal :(
And how can you compare those Mojotone to the Custombuckers?
Where did you get the mixed set (zebra + aged nickel) from? Love the look but T only has matching sets and the Mojotone website doesn’t show these either :(
Hi, they only show the matched sets because 99% of the buyers wouldn’t ever choose a mixed set. 😅 I get it, it’s not the classic „clean“ look. If you want to mix you can get the neck and bridge separately and combine the looks as you wish. 👍 Cheers!
@@KrisBarocsi ah, I mean… that makes sense. Just thought I was missing something obvious there 😅 thanks!
Hello......it looks like your plain strings aren't anywhere close to centering up over the pole pieces of the new pickup or is it just how it looks? Probably doesn't matter much.
