    This is my personal car in the video having the unit fitted (just fortuitous timing as my car was at FGP having air con and suspension work done when the PCCM+ units got delivered) and i just wanted to say that i've been using the unit for about 2 weeks now and it is a game changer compared to the original unit. Sound quality is great, having dab, apple car play and bluetooth for phone/music really does bring the car up to date. It charges my phone when it is plugged in for apple car play as well. It looks in keeping with the interior with the Porsche logo embossed on the front of the unit and a large Porsche crest that comes on the screen when you start the car. The service from FGP was outstanding.... fast, efficient, great value and totally professional at all times . A huge thank you to Luke, Olly and the team. Wishing you all a healthy and prosperous 2023.
    Regards,
    Paul.

    Looking forward to the US release! It's quite disappointing that Car Play is not wireless! I would consider wireless Car Play to be a minimum feature for a new PCM. All the same, it looks fantastic and I will be replacing the Alpine I installed a few years ago. I lost rear speaker fader control, and all the car and trip info. And, thank God, actual knobs will be back in the car.

      While I agree that wireless Apple CarPlay is ideal, I do not like the newest generation of wireless chargers in most vehicles. Especially when the phone has a case on it, they do not work well at all and the phone frequently has to cut charging off because it is getting too hot. I know this has nothing to do with wireless CarPlay but having to plug in your phone to get CarPlay has the added benefit of charging the phone correctly. It only takes a few seconds and then you have the "bonus" of having a charged up phone when you are done driving or have reached your destination. Just something to consider...

    I went with the Nav-TV adapter cable about 10 years ago that lets me run any aftermarket headunit I want with my 997.1TT (including wireless Carplay) -- works beautifully for me. Good to see Porsche is putting effort into making an official solution though - not many manufacturers have this kind of dedication to their products.

    Thank you so much for showing this.
    I am actually the designer for the buttons + knobs oem-looking 987/997 android unit to be released worldwide shortly.
    I just want to say that i can definitely appreciate what porsche has done here. I love the
    - oem nav info directed to the instrument cluster - very cool. i am guessing that this functionality will not work under waze/google maps under carplay/AA?
    - hvac memory controls
    - full oem pcm functionality being able to access core functionality without piwis / durametric / foxwell530
    - bracket mounting system with the heat clearance to install the fibre optic box (i wish I had thought of this)
    - 4 (fader control) via the fibreOptic adapter. almost all of the aftermarket fibreOptic adapters are 2 channel. Definitely great that porsche has retained this.
    As for the reverse trigger issue that I see, it is amazing that the pcm harness intercepts the reverse trigger signal in the 997.1. I'm going to guess this was done via proper canBus decoding for the .1 (the afterrmarket canBus decoders have been able to decode the .2 reverse trigger but not the .1 cars). I couldnt find the physical reverse wire in the .1 radio harness, but i did certainly try (unsuccessfully) - so i grabbed it from either the kick panel / tail light.
    Based on my own experience with my unit, I am guessing that porsche will do is likely supply a harness that will fit in remaining unused android slots that will have
    - RCA rear cam AHD input
    - power/ground splice for rear cam
    If they wanted to go all out with this upgrade, with the above features that seem to be coming, perhaps they can still add
    - a RCA front cam AHD input (i have this on my 997.1 in my android 997 prototype unit and its very useful)
    - maybe even a rear USB input (that can be extended) for usb carplay input that can be re-routed in the centre console armrest ( i have this in my 997 too)
    - tpms sensor upgrade + module (for 2005/2006 cars) - i have this supported in my android unit for my 05)
    - wireless carplay/AA support
    - firmware flash to enable the above (if needed)
    I cant wait to give this badboy a test in person in due time and compare. Looks great and has some amazing features I wish I could have implemented / thought of.
    Thanks for this video

    Amazing! Thank you! Years ago I installed an Alpine unit in my 997.1. A volume knob is mandatory in my book so the options at the time were limited. I would have killed for an OE Porsche unit, especially with CarPlay. Install was a pain because the full size double-din box and MOST fiberoptic adapter had to be crammed into the space. This install looks like a piece of cake in comparison. Now I'm at a crossroads. Do I toss the perfectly good Alpine and spend $1300 just to upgrade my weekend fun toy?? It's not even my DD. • @PaulPeard
    @PaulPeard Год назад +2

    Great post guys - well done for getting this done and out there - brilliant to see it in the flesh. Couple of observations (on the unit - not your install or video) - I think it's a backwards step to only have USB presentation on the front - I would want to be able to route a cable from the rear to an armrest cubby or the glovebox - phone cable hanging out the front is horrid., would have preferred the box like the 9x6 version if I couldn't just run the cable where I wanted it. Also - massive miss that it's not available for a .2 car, that just seems like a marketing decision to me. Anyway - thanks for this - very very good.

    • @nigel.w
      @nigel.w Год назад

      The .2 car has a different PCM, so yet another unit has to be designed. And, given that Porsche's policy is apparently to introduce such units circa 15 years after the cars went out of production, the .2 unit isn't expected until late 2026/early 2027.

    • @PaulPeard
      @PaulPeard Год назад

      @@nigel.w yup - PCM 3 is different to PCM2 but the differences aren't massive when it comes to interface and connectivity to the car. A different fascia ( which they already did for the Cayenne) and some additional logic for the slightly different canbus signals required. but the .2 Canbus setup is very similar to a .1 there isn't a large engineering effort. When they decide to bring it to market is purely a marketing decision, nothing is going to change on the .2 cars in the next few years - all that is going to happen is fewer people will be prepared to pay that kind of premium on cars that are by then worth a lot less than they are today - and the market will be further narrowed because people will turn to 3rd party solutions. It seems a flawed approach to me

    • @nigel.w
      @nigel.w Год назад

      @@PaulPeard I largely agree. But maybe they don't want to be constantly updating these kind of units? So the resultant logic is maybe to market new units every four years, and upgrade the units every 15 years? Obviously, I don't really know. However, I think your reasoning is basically sound in so far as the demand for such units when the cars are worth significantly less may well be lower. Then again, maybe not. For sure, some will go third party in the meantime. Then again, some people in this thread who already went third party on their .1s said they're going to replace their thrid party units with this. Anyway, it is obviously very frustrating for current .2 owners, and to be further frustrated by no explicit policy from Porsche about expected release dates.

    Not quite sure about the interference issue on the longer USB leads - none of the aftermarket units seem to have this issue.
    Also seems a bit weird that they didn't just make the unit full double-DIN as having to put in the separate MOST adapter seems a bit odd for an OE solution.
    Otherwise the ability for it to communicate with the instrument cluster is brilliant, that's the only thing I 'miss' about my Pioneer - oh and front/rear MOST balance and fade which would be good to have.

    EDIT & CORRECTION: It apparently does have bluetooth. That is good news!
    GPS software is now Q2/2021, which is a relief. I suppose with appleplay and google maps, it renders this somewhat obsolete, except when you're in areas where there is no phone reception (common in some areas of the USA). I actually used the mapping software this past fall to get me out of a traffic jam in a remote area of the US.
    CD no longer in the unit as well. I still use the CD as it reads MP3 files from the CD and I can add 5-10 standard CDs to a single disk.
    The video mentioned 1499 quid for the unit and install. I saw that the unit here in NA was $1479, installation extra. Doesn't seem to be a difficult install as the FM & GPS units in the columns may not be necessary...
