Why I left the ACA and what's next...

  • During The Atheist Experience on Sunday, October 2nd, I announced that it would be my final show and that I would be leaving the Atheist Community of Austin.
This live stream, scheduled for 4pm Central on October 9th will address the story behind this decision as well as what comes next.
    Some reminders:
    1. I'm not asking anyone else to leave the ACA or stop supporting the ACA, you do what you feel is best. Support me, them, both, neither...but I'm giving my reasons for why I'm no longer supporting them.
    2. No one should harrass or bother the ACA about this, no matter how you feel about the information. There are still great people there, doing good, even if it's an organization I no longer wish to work with.
    3. My former cohosts are AMAZING people - do not call in to ACA shows and ask the presenters to weigh in on this issue. The presenters on AxP were informed that I was leaving and, in part, why...but presenters on other shows were not informed and do not know all of the isseus (part of the problem).
    4. I'm not sure if I'l be taking questions or not - the delay makes it difficult. But I do not have plans to address this issue after today. Getting back to work is the primary goal.

We've had an asshole manager for the last two years years and he sucks at how he treats his workers and because of that we've lost some good hard working folks that have been there for years. They got sick of the bullshit and left. Don't blame them. I guess he does the behind the scenes manger stuff good enough for corporate not to sack him, but part of being a good manager is to treat your workers like people.
Yeah, you have to be strict with bad employees not doing their job, but the ones who do a good job deserve some common decency and appreciation and not be treated like only numbers in his paperwork. Dragging his ass to replace workers who quit or got fired and expects the same amount of work to be done in the same amount of time so he can get his quarterly bonus.
I guess I'm still here because I'm not intimidated by his bullshit. I do my job and do it well, not for his sake, but because I take pride in my work and I stay professional even when I'm pissed off. We got into once and he kind of stop giving me a hard time because he knows he can't push me around, plus he's already lost a lot of our good workers. So now we have a few good workers on our crew and a revolving door of noobs that don't stick around long, leaving us to pick up the slack.

I recently left a company after 9 years over the exact same soap-opera.
I heard someone once say that most people who stay in organisations for over a decade end up starting to become a liability, at least from the company's perspective.
And it's probably the same story in most cases where, over time, the company's values get "updated" while the veteran staff holds onto the old values they've crystalized onto their ethics over years of refinement.
Then, when a company corporatises, if the humble old grass-roots values don't get included into this year's itinerary at the board meeting, well... then, spending company resources on promoting original values becomes "not on-brand with company interests" and slowly, but surely, all things change - as will virtually very core value of that organisation.
    I call it: Lex-Luthorisation

For no more gain than vanity. It is has led to a lack of loyalty and commitment from workers. It is short termism in the hope of fast but unsustainable growth and rapid golden rewards. The only good thing about it, is its ability to eat it's own. Those who ruthlessly climbed to the top, so find, they too are victims of their own nasty practices.

Proof that people can have very different understandings of the word 'reason'.
His debate with Jordan Peterson shows this perfectly. I think Matt did pretty horribly, with narrow thinking, and at times moralistic and at others completely subjective and, therefore, without meaning. No real consistent, overarching philosophy to be found, and nothing that really deals with Nietzsche, Dostoevsky, Jung, and the other greats.
Naturally, this is the kind of shallow depth you get when your world view was invented in 1960 by the New Left and early French post-modernist types (typically with a Communist origin, such as Simone), and the best you can do prior to this is pull out some kind of atheistic Darwin reference or otherwise from 1860, if you're lucky (or, as Matt is fond of doing, going back to the more atheistic Greeks -- second-rate students at best, not the real Greeks, since they were not actually atheistic at all, such as Plato). There just aren't any great atheistic thinkers that actually dealt with the fundamentals of life without getting very subjective and Marxian about it; and the few that do exist are very contradictory in their own nature/beliefs, switching between world views almost on a daily basis (Hitchens and Percy Shelley come to mind, for example, if we are to consider them great atheistic thinkers: they are certainly some of the best on offer from my reading of history, despite Shelley's clear religious impulse and Hitchens's shockingly dull-minded New Left type Marxian fantasy, as noted by his socialism vs. capitalism debate circa 1986, which you can find on RUclips).
Of course, Matt has long been pretty much the only famous southern atheist in the public eye for the simple reason that only about 5% of Americans actually identity as atheists (anti-theist types, such as Matt). Might be closer to 15-20% now if we count all the young radical woke types running around -- but they are so far beyond atheism that they are merely attacking reality and the 'system' itself, and not actually talking about atheism or such. Not such a good thing, either way. Matt himself has gone very far, however, given his completely anti-reality, anti-biology comments in the Peterson debates around sex/biology and basic notions of freedom: proving that there is a deep problem here with the atheistic movement, given that he's one of the major figures -- and I think we can do away with any notion of 'reason', therefore. Unless 'reason' now means, 'sex doesn't exist, let's all pretend that magic is real'... wait, doesn't Matt keep crying about how magic doesn't exist? Irony, as ever.
This might even be my biggest problem with the public atheists types: they out-right reject basic reality/biology/history whilst proclaiming to be objective rulers of the world through logic and reason... and due to the more extreme elements now (including the likes of 'Atheism+' movement), I have zero sympathy now for such public figures and movements. Not to even mention the state of Sam Harris since he openly went full-Fascist due to his crazy anti-Trump problem (you can find this on RUclips, as well). The whole thing is falling at the level of the leaders and the base/followers (more so, if you just look at the atheistic Facebook/Reddit pages: they have been utterly evil since at least 2018, as I kept a close eye on such things -- when the big problem came up of the Chinese Government burning down Christians churches in China, and a large number of atheists supporting the idea of Christians being inside. I tend to disregard any group or movement once they support mass murder or such of the ilk. It's all very much giving me flashbacks to Soviet Militant Atheism -- that's why people hate Richard Dawkins. He doesn't know basic history. When he calls himself a 'Militant Atheist' so proudly (at a TED talk, no less), all people are thinking is, 'murderous Communist'. The only connection people have to such a notion is the atheistic, murderous group within the Soviet Union about 1930 called 'Militant Atheists'). What next, a Google talk entitled, 'Why I'm a Nazi'? Or, are we also going to pretend that the Militant Atheists of Russia were less evil than the Nazis? -- After all, they did burn/shoot about 10,000 Catholics to death. Should give you a hint to their motivations and philosophical underpinnings. Richard and his followers should, therefore, stop using that term. Basic Wittgensteinian thinking, yes?

You still have a long way to go to improve this world with your ideas and I want to be there to learn them.

You got me through some dark times when you started this all those years ago, you helped educate me in a way which society failed to, and I can't possibly thank you enough for that. I'm sorry that you've had to deal with this kind of crap from something which you put so much into, but ever feel like the work you did was demeaned or lessened by how it ended. The time you gave us with this changed lives.

This is why I never join ANY ORGANIZATION, even when I agree with the mission of the organization. In any group like this there is always someone or a group of people whose narcissism is out of control and who cannot tolerate differing opinions. In my experience this is a universal problem of human beings attempting to cooperate in groups. Sad but true. Some people seem to waltz through adulthood while maintaining the emotional maturity of grade school playground bullies. Life is too short to voluntarily associate with people like this, and they are literally EVERYWHERE and present in EVERY ORGANIZATION!

I'm sorry that has been your experience and that it has warped your view of humanity. True, there are lots of emotionally immature people and it sucks when they are the ones in charge drunk on an ego power trip but not every organization is like this. I have been blessed to be part of several groups throughout my life that are all about sharing different opinions and have wonderful leadership.

Everything you said is true, but at the same time, based on how Matt behaves on podcasts, I'm not convinced he's a very nice person to be around in real life. Educated and informed or not, he comes off as a complete brash, arrogant, controlling asshole. Matt expresses his mindset through podcasts and videos with "my way or the high way". I'm not remotely surprised that he's chosen to leave a community over the "difference of opinion". They probably wanted him gone long before this.

A good group of people can be an amazing enjoyable, productive, or enlightening experience. I suspect cynicism that strong will not help - Yes, things in groups can and often do go wrong, doesn't mean they're not worthwhile.

@@predatorhousepet Sure, joining groups is fun. For a while. I join them until I feel I feel the journey has accomplished what it was meant to do. Raise money for the library, learn to appreciate art with likeminded people, etc. But there's always an end date in the future. You might make friends along the way and that's great. But I agree with nearly everything OP said. Stop trying to "find your tribe", or create an identity based around "belonging". These people may be atheists, but they're just looking for that "church" experience. I say nuts to that. Once you tap into any hive mind, it's easy to just turn off the critical thinking machine.

I’ve enjoyed your videos. It’s always difficult when one of the pillars of an organization are not valued, then treated as a pariah. I feel your pain, and have had similar experiences in my past. Part of my management strategy has been to think whether an employee is better as part of the team, or on another team competing for customers. While I have not subscribed to any ACA channels, I subscribed to yours as a vote of agreement of you and your abilities versus the poor management of the ACA. Cheers, may your life continue on with further successes.

I really hate this happened. When I first came to terms that I was an atheist, I was scared and hid it. I didn't know how to deal with it. You were key to me realizing I wasn't alone and learning how to deal with being an atheist in the Bible Belt. I've been listening to you for years.

Matt, I am 45 years old, grew up a Church of Christ Christian, and came out in 2011 as Gay. Obviously, this rocked my belief system. Though I ended up becoming a Pantheist, I will say that your show, and specifically you, were so helpful and comforting when it came to shedding the old frightening, tentacle like biblical views. Please keep it up, as you are doing excellent work. Sometimes all it takes is just one idea to begin the sea change. Good luck fellow seeker☯️☸️❤️

Wow 17 years and not even a thank you email. I stopped watching the ACA about a year ago after being a regular viewer for 5ish years. You and many guests really helped me get through my feelings about religion and how it impacted my life and family. Its disheartening to see them throw you and all your work away with corporate mismanagement. It seems the ACA has lost its down to earth, grassroots feel to it when it wasnt so encorporated. I just wish i wasnt so out of the loop on how it really kicked off, what happened on Truth Wanted that warrented such an apology? I have barely tuned in to Athiest Experience since the Stephen Woodford drama a couple years ago now.

@@rG1vZ He made a video that was about trans athletes dominating womens sports due to higher average muscle mass and male hormones like testosterone. He was slammed and smeared as a transphobe even though that couldnt be further from the truth. He was thrown under the bus by the ACA to preserve their reputation after just having him on their show a day or so prior. He felt betrayed and rightfully so.

I regret to not have had the opportunity to see you live in the studio, but wholeheartedly support your departure. Thank you for staying true to the mission, and fighting for the respect of our lgbtia community, despite the impact it has had on your life. So much respect for you, for doing the hard, right thing. Thank you for the work you’ve done up to this point, and thank you in advance for the future work you’ll be ✨blessing✨ us with.

Still, it's grand entertainment to see atheists turn on each other. Finally. They have worked so hard to stay artificially unified and not allowing any dissention. They want all atheists to agree on everything probably because they know their atheistic cause is inherently weak and cannot suffer division; and so they want atheists to be clones of each other. But cracks in the wall are finally appearing.
