This was the ballsiest thing I've ever seen. What I love about KT is how when she's setting up, despite the circumstances, she looks and acts like she's got every right to be there among the big names. And the hunger-- all she needed was one shot, and she took it.
She was only booked as a backup for the show as well: just 'on call' in case one of the other musicians cancelled, and with only about 3 hours to go IIRC, one of them did. Talk about taking the shot...
@@MrHws5mp She travelled down on the coach. Even with a following wind, Glasgow to London in three hours would be quite the feat! 😂 But yes, very little notice.
I was lucky enough to be there. KT sat quietly all the way through and I like most had no idea who she was. That soon changed. Without a shadow of a doubt she was the stand out performance. Very very cool.
She went out when every other act had a reputation behind them to rely on, and she had nothing, and she stole the show with a demonstration of great talent and supreme confidence. Hard to believe this was 20 years ago now. I would love to hear KT Tunstall try some blues tracks, because she has a lovely voice.
17 years later, this is as impressive and fresh as it was back then. You know a career changing moment when you see it, there were many on Jools Holland Later, I personally think this was the best of them,
Another career-changing moment was when Seasick Steve performed and he actually thought he'd blown his chance, as jaws around the studio dropped. The rest is, as they say, is history.
One of the very best performances ever recorded on Later with Jools Holland. What makes this even more impressive is the fact that Tunstall was a last minute stand in. Another artist dropped out of the show not long before recording, and KT received a call. She made her way down to the studio with just her guitar and loop pedal, and produce an astonishing live performance.
And to think this was her first TV appearance and to have the talent and guts to do that on that show in front of other established musicians. Amazing performance.
The silver lining of sorts, is that this is what comes from street busking or terrible gigs in old man bars. If you can get the looper timing during pisisng rain on Buchanan street whilst a junkie is shouting stuff and spraying bucky everywhere then doing it on Jools Holland is a piece of piss...
I was never really into KT Tunstall, but I still come back and watch this performance over and over. Whether it's your type of music or not, this is outstanding. Truly mesmerizing!
Exactly. This was the first time I saw here and my mind was blown, but I was disappointed by the album. Still glad this was her debut though and I often watch and recommend :-)
I remember watching this on the Later show and being blown away! I found out that KT was performing at a small gig in Bristol just a few weeks later and went to see her perform live in front of a hundred or so fans and she was equally amazing.
I remember the very first time that I watched this... and to this day, it shakes my soul so much... she is so fearless, commands a raw and powerful performance. While gives a masterclass about how to use a looper pedal! Simply phenomenal! Completely in love, even after some 20 years...
I keep coming back to this uplifting and amazing performance. I used to think it should be mandatory viewing for all music students, but probably it should be mandatory viewing for EVERYONE.
@James Wilkinson in te city winery concert she says she had almost no time and that in fact it was a replacement for Nas... Furthermore, she jokes about wearing cut sleeves in her legs... go figure
@@TimmyTickle That was Bowie - watch his set, it was outstanding. And still wasn't close to Queen. There aren't many artists with the ability and self-confidence to follow someone that just blew everyone off the stage, but David Bowie was one of them.

Absolutely incredible performance. Easily on my top 5 of all time. The look on everyone's face is just utter shock of watching shear brilliance. I mean the voice is astonishingly brilliant. If time travel to the past becomes possible this will be in my top five musical moments to revisit live.
She is just fantastic....her solo start ups are phenomenal. Got a whole lot of her albums. A great pic-up. My pal and I go to see her whenever we can; went last in March this year - 2023
Been watching Jools since the very start & have to sat that KT is without doubt the best raw talent to have appeared on that show. That's some really stiff opposition she's up against I know but I remember watching this live & once my gaping mouth had closed at the end of her performance, the only word that came out was a gasp of "Wow!". Such a talent & a hell of a way to make an entrance to the big leagues

Wow I was 9 when this first aired! Has been my favorite jools holland performance all that time. I'm 23 now mad how something sticks in your memory like that. Seriously impressive talent!
just about to turn 30, this popped up, didnt even remember posting this comment..... still my favourite Jools holland. honestly i hope she realises how iconic this performance was
I saw KT last night supporting " The Mighty Stereophonics " !! And " Unsurprisingly She Was " Just As Brilliant As Ever " !! A " Truly Brilliant Songwriter " !!! From Adrian Browne 1965
I loved the contrast between the seriousness and concentration of the set-up, then Boom, she comes to life when the song proper kicks off. Such a powerful, confident performance in front of her peers. Amazing KT, such a huge voice, but always under control. Stamping on the tambourine - genius!

I am in awe, every time I see KT Tunstall perform. Especially solo, with this crazy (as in, it takes crazy talent to do it) looping sh*t. Wow. My life is enriched for seeing her perform. Thank you KT.
Just had to come and see this after listening to KT on Craig Fergusions Podcast 'Joy' - What a performance to introduce yourself to the world with. Pure star power.

KT is undeniably one of the most outstanding musical talents to have come out of the UK in the 21st Century. This has to be one of the best and most impressive performances ever on Jools Holland, made even more impressive with that it being her TV debut also! And to think Ed Sheeran fans get excited when he loops, he can't get near this lady, not even fit to lace her boots.
Came back to this classic after KT's post on Instagram. Great performance until nowadays.

Same! Remember watching it live and it blew me away!
Me too and I'm glad I did. Fantastic stuff

How does this not have millions of views??? I watch it every time I need a pick-me-up; it never fails. Just jaw-droppingly good.
The original video did have 4-5 million views if I remember correctly. It's gone now though
Anthony bro I totally agree…Wot a performance…KT so hot too…
It's brilliant! She's brilliant.
The Professor of Rock did a great interview with her about the genesis of the song.
she doesn't have millions of views coz she is not dancing almost naked with atuotune, twerking on the floor...how unfortunate and sad

Ben howard '' End of an affair '' world class .. best ever
kings of leon jools imho
Two performances stick in my mind, this and Seasick Steve on Jools Holland's Hootenanny a couple of years later.
Very close first but Oasis Gas Attack for me.
either this or Björk's Hyperballad performance from 1995
13 years later and I still come back to watch this performance!

Yes I can remember it being a tutorial in songwriting. Sort of a Protools to brought to life. I was so pleased when I found this performance on here.
5yrs later I discover this fabulous song, then comment❤
Make that 20 years now!
Looping before looping was a thing, love it
Really? You should listen to the drum track for ELO's Don't Bring Me Down.
I can't believe I've only seen this so many years later, gloriously done by an incredibly talented young lady.
Probably the best ever performance on Jools Holland
A goddamn masterclass in looping.
Just for reference, that was Anita Baker, Jackson Browne and The Cure being totally upstaged by an unknown girl with a looper. Who wiggles.
Robert Smith...shit I have to follow THAT?????
Tash Sultana has now taken loops to another universe, check her out.
And Embrace
And David Gray and Ray LaMontagne
@@tezzrterry7485 Nah, there's always a point when there's to much of a essentially good thing and Tash Sultana definitely is way past that point.
