I have not impulse bought any tarantulas but I did impulse buy my current frog and some of my past fish. And while that doesn't always work out, it worked fine for me and I knew it would for a few reasons. 1) I have a lot of experience with these kinds of animals so I was familiar with the species and their care needs 2) I already had multiple similar animals to the ones I impulse bought so I already had everything I needed on hand including old cages that weren't in use at the time. I say this because I think these same factors apply to most people in the tarantula hobby once they've had a handful of tarantulas for a while.
I spent 3 months researching Tarantulas and their care. I finally just decided to go for it! I'm now the proud owner of Sasha, my B. Emilia. Thanks for your videos - they helped a lot!
Hey Kat! Just impulse bought my very first ever tarantula (an E. Campestratus sling) after seeing your love for yours ❤️ Thanks for all of the info and for helping me overcome my crippling fear of spiders (I held mine when it arrived today!!).
I tend to avoid shops, cause I know I'd be the same, wanting to rescue everything. I buy my feeders online, just to avoid it. Anyway great little video Kat, well done.
Great basic summary, Kat! One quick point I’d add: it’s definitely worthwhile looking for care information for the specific species or genus you have, since every once in a while there are oddities (like how Caribena and Avicularia species don’t need as much humidity as you’d guess, and how some people don’t keep Pelinobius muticus fossorially, even though you’d think that’d be necessary). I like to check out info from Tom Moran, Richard at The Tarantula Collective, the arachnoboards forum, and Dave’s Little Beasties, amongst others, for individual care info.
I impulse bought my Avicularia avicularia when I went into a pet store for some hornworms for my GBB and T albo. And she turned out to be gravid! So now I have 9 Avicularia avicularias lol.
I got some cash for Xmas and impulse ordered an adult giant Vietnamese centipede, a camel spider, giant vinegaroon, a couple pacman frogs and a Cameroon red headed centipede. I impulse buy every so often. Im STOKED for the camel spider. Ive wanted one forever. Unfortunately I have to import it cause I cant find them anywhere in my country and its going to be a couple months before shipment because of the weather but Im DYING for the camel spider. Its a shame they dont last much more than a year in captivity but even that long will be worth what Im paying for such an incredible creature that is rarely seen in the hobby in my country. Im gonna just have to get a million photos and videos and hope that they become easier to come by in my country.
I started watching your videos maybe a month ago, no idea how I ended up here as I have a pretty serious fear of spiders. I now have 2 juvenile phidippus regius, 11 phidippus regius slings, and 11 tarantulas. So yes, I understand the impulse buying thing ;) Thank you!
I feel like when we talk about "impulse buying" animals we are usually talking about someone going in and buying an animal without knowing even knowing basic husbandry. To me getting an animal that you know how to properly keep, have an enclosure or set up a proper enclosure quickly, and can afford the animal long term, it's not really "impulse" buying... Basically imo if you are prepared to take the animal then it's not truly impulse buying. As someone who worked at a pet store when I say impulse buy I mean the mom's telling their kids, pick a hamster or a guinea pig, not even concerned they are drastically different to care for. Or the guy who wants a Xmas present for their gf and want a chinchilla, until I tell the care and leaves with a hamster. If they are coming in without doing ANY research and purely relying on my info, you are IMPULSE BUYING AND THATS NEVER OKAY. It's NEVER OKAY TO GET AN ANIMAL WHEN YOU DONT KNOW IF YOU ARE CAPABLE OF PROPERLY TAKING CARE OF SAID ANIMAL. too many animals end up in shelters 3 months after getting bought because of that.
Yeah, I think that’s kind of my message. It seems like it’s “impulse buying” to others when you walk out of the pet store with a new tarantula unplanned a few times .. but if you already keep tarantulas, even if you’re not familiar with the species, just find out the basic few things I mentioned and it’ll be fine so long as you already know the basics. I cant imagine how frustrating it would be to work in a chain pet store and see people impulse buy a hamster or something with no idea those tiny cages and wheels they come with are trash.
@@tarantulakat for sure frustrating. 🙃 You made it come across clearly in this video that you still need to know basics and explained the info you need. Thanks for the great content! 😁
I impulsively prepared a pretty big enclosure for my first Tarantula and when the sling finally arrived the seller included a much nicer and smaller acrylic enclosure. I feel like not using it would be a waste so I just use the acrylic box for the sling. Though I now have an unused box filled with substrate and decorations. So I impulsively ordered a bigger Tarantula to fill it.
Went to the reptile convention looking for a jumping spider MAYBE a tarantula. Nope ended up with a Mygalamorph that’s said to be very venomous and is psycho quick. There was a mild freak out in the begging. But we’ve gotten to grow up together and now it’s my favorite spider by a long shot.
I just started in the hobby with 2 jumping spiders, and they're about as much care as a finicky houseplant. Very easy to want more because care and maintenance is so low.
I impulse bought a 6 ft boa 😂 I already had a set up and everything for her so it wasn’t *too* impulsive but I definitely wasn’t planning on getting a new snake that day lol I don’t recommend it, but I love that noodle to death
I found your Cannal 3 days ago and I like your conntent and your collection of spiders and animals you have :) pls keep on and entertain us like you did befor :)
I think we've all got huge collections of empty tubs, substrate and decorations. So I could impulse buy 20-30 tarantulas and have no issues, only takes a few minutes to throw together an enclosure and if needed a few minutes to research the care. Now reptiles I'd need to research the care more in depth and test the setup for a week or so before getting the animal.
Got myself a Brachypelma auratum at my very first expo a couple weeks ago and I'm so glad I did. I've been considering a tarantula forever and when I saw the adult, I was in love. I couldn't afford the adult but the breeder said they had slings. So after many basic care questions, I snatched my new buddy up, bought some crickets, and had literally everything else at home. They've eaten 4 crickets for me already and until they're bigger, they're literally just living in an old 4 inch deli cup I got some red wrigglers in. XD I still count it as an impulse buy because even though I had everything and bought the rest, I didn't plan to come home with anything other than some new bioactive stuff for my ball python. Zero regrets.
After watching your channel and others, I decided 2 weeks ago to bite the bullet and buy some tarantulas, I bought a couple of slings and a juvenile LP, the LP was in pre molt and has almost doubled in size in a week, absolutely fascinating, I will be making some more impulse buys on the weekend, well and truly hooked x EDIT; Impulse buy of the day was a Trinidad Chevron.
A few days ago I was online ordering crickets for my other critters. I refreshed the site and impolse bought a green bottle blue sling. I'm so in love! I now have a total of 7 creppy crawlies and my goal is to have many more.
I brought an adult female Selenotypus Bowen River and she is adorable. The most gorgeous and gentle girl, my first adult and the best thing I have brought in ages. She is also helping my son with his arachnophobia, he has even been able to feed her!!!
Well Kat, I got my Wednesday plush 2 days ago. It was extremely exciting to finally to get it in, and it is awesome! Thanks for helping me over my fears and learning to appreciate spiders and trantulas.
Impulse tarantulas are the best lol I have 2 impulse and 2 I guess non-impulse. Btw I loved Bowser off to the side making sure he got himself some camera time 😂🤍 I LOOOVE your chalcodes, such an absolute sweetheart. I think the chalcodes will always and forever hold the #1 place in my heart
Only impulse buy animal I ever got was our little Western Hognose. Someone was selling him with full set up and needed him rehomed asap. I showed my daughter and she squealed please mum lets get him. So we did lol. He's a hissy little noodle but we do love our little snoots. Had him almost 4 years now and he has to be one of the easiest pets I've ever had.
My Kenyan Sand Boa was slightly impulse but not really, I researched them for a month and knew I wanted one but I did buy the snake and everything I needed at the same time at an expo rather than prepping something at home. Half my tarantulas are for sure impulse purchases fully!
@@tarantulakat Yes! I almost got a Pulchra at the expo and an N. Chromatus because they are on my list but I didn't wanna push my luck with my husband asking for more animals after getting the yes on the snake!
I started in the hobby with jumping spiders, and then I found your content and became super interested in tarantulas, also! (Even tho I told my partner and best friend I would NEVER, lolz). Then I impulse bought Kirby, my A. Avicularia 💕 They’re still a tiny sling, but I am fascinated and obsessed already!!
I made an entire spreadsheet with information and species I was considering and went over it for weeks before deciding to buy a T. Albo. Aannnnnd ended up impulse adding a G. Pulchripes sling to my order anyway lmao sling just had its first molt with me though so I’d say it’s going well!
My first impulse tarantula buy was when I was in my late teens living with my mom (who was terrified of spiders, but gave in so long as I was responsible with them lol). I bought a pink toe tarantula at my local pet shop and named it Attila. I had Attila for about 2 years before I had to give her up (assuming it was a female). My mom passed and I had to stay with some "family" for a while that wouldn't allow them. I had to give up Attila and my stripe knee tarantula, Atlanta (Who was also an impulse buy at a better pet store than where I got Attila). They were such awesome spiders.
I just bought my first T as a birthday present to myself. He/she is an Aphonopelma seemani, and I enjoy him very much! For a terrestrial T he is out every day, but not for very long. He is a decent eater so far, but I have only had him going on 2 weeks. I have been wanting a T for a long time, and this species would not be my first choice, I wanted a Grammastola pulchra, but it is what it is. Hopefully I will one day have a Brazilian black. Thank you for your content!!
I wish I could impulse buy tarantula 😢 Living in paradise does have it's prices, but I am thankful that you post such interesting videos about your tarantulas. 😊😊 Thank you for sharing.
I think inverts are more acceptable to impulse buy because they are easier to provide for on the fly. I always have extra cork bark, substrate, and such so if I bring home a T or roaches I usually just swing by Walmart, grab a tub, make ventilation and boom I have an enclosure).
I'd been watching tarantula videos for a couple years now and had planned on getting a sling. But my location where I work is a huge corporation that doesn't get them, not supposed to get them, we accidentally got a Brachypelma in shipping and the people on the floor kept her in a small critter keeper with no substrate, a coconut hide and a hermit crab water dish with a sponge and I knew I had to get her out of there. I've had BellaDonna for about a month and a half, got her a tarantula cribs terrarium and she's definitely done better. I'm glad I got her since she is more established compared to a sling and she really needed it.
I impulse bought a Grammostola Pulchra Sling at my local Expo center and I'm glad I bought it, he did end up being Male but hopefully sometime in the future I can find a female.
I think it’s mostly the space thing. They don’t take up a lot of space, ESPECIALLY when they’re slings. But they’ll eventually grow so.. 👀 some people are going to be in a literal tight spot in a few years lol
I am always so tempted to impulse buy more tarantulas. The only reason I don’t is because I read something once that was like “you can own One tarantula and just have one tarantula, but if you get a Second tarantula, then that tarantula is a gateway tarantula into having twenty tarantulas,” so I’ve been stubbornly limiting myself to One tarantula. Because it’s TRUE! As soon as I let myself get another tarantula, it’s all downhill from there, I’ll have twenty more before I can blink!
My first T was an impulse buy! After I stumbled on your channel and I started thinking I MIGHT want one, I looked up local reptile conventions and there just HAPPENED to be one like the next day right down the road from me so I was like ok lemme just go look. Came home with a curly hair lol. I had no intention of buying one when I went in there but when I saw it I couldn’t not 😂
I went looking for a Acanthoscurria geniculata (couldn't find one) and bought a C. Versicolor instead and ended up impulse buying a P. Sazimai :) I'm very happy with both!
I went for a Xenesthis Immanis at an expo, got that, impulse bought an A.Chalcodes and don't regret it foe even a moment. She's been one of my constantly on display Ts and she gets up to all kinds of hijinks and will constantly put herself in weird positions. Love her.
I have only one juvenile tarantola for now (gbb btw) and i’m hiding her/him from my parents because my dad has arachnofobia but i can relate only that i don’t have any hiding spots
I impulse bought my Albopilosus Tlitocatl, went in to get mealworms and came out with mealworm plus a tarantula, and they're doing really good, hoping to see a molt soon.
I impulse bought my Cyriopagopus vonwirthi from a local small pet store for a total of $65 WITH enclosure. They had it labeled as a "stripe knee tarantula" with no species name. It wasn't until I got home and got it out and took pictures that some folks on reddit told me it wasn't an Aphonopelma seemanni. Once I got myself situated and got it into a proper set up, I went back to the pet store and let them know what they'd sold me. She casually said that it wasn't the first time their supplier had sent them the wrong tarantula, and none of them know anything about tarantulas so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ . I guess every tarantula with stripes on their knee is the same species now. I think the worst part of the story is that when I got there, it was obvious that they had just cleaned out the tarantula because the critter keeper lid was sitting loosely on top and the spider was chilling really close to the nearest escape route. I think that is really what sold me. 2:25 OHHHH Bowser thinks you're going to feed him. My turtle does that too.
I impulse bought an adult female T albo from petsmart! I was only in to get feeders (how these stories always go) but i noticed a bunch of little kids just banging on the T's glass. So of course I had to "save" her. lol
I'm such an overthinker that I have to spend hours googling before even getting a plant 😂 I'm probably going to end up "impulsively" buying a T or two if I see any being sold locally but I dont think it really counts as impulsive if I've been wanting and researching them for the past 3 years lmao
This is a great video! I was having a discussion with a friend (who is a spider keeper), around knowing what you are getting into when you take on another animal in your care (regardless of species). I'm wondering how many people will impulse buy a tarantula (or any spider) and be completely unprepared. No impulse buys here, since I don't keep spiders - I respect the ones that hang around outside (although jumping spiders are very tempting! 🙂). Great content as always!!
I've never impulse bought a tarantula since im not allowed to have spiders, but i have with praying mantises lol I bought an Orchid and an African Stick mantis. They still thrivin' lol
Just impulse bought my first T earlier this week. Went to a local exotic pet shop to look for a new enclosure for our older jumping spider and left with a G.rosea lol
All 7 of my T’s are impulse buys💀 I bought 6/7 of them as slings (two are now pretty big juveniles). My first impulse tarantula was Fuzzy, my T. albopilosus. I got him as a subadult male almost two years ago, he’s mature now and still very lively💀💀 my two juveniles are T. albopilosus sisters😭 (yes literally sac mates and they’re both girls🥹🥹) my youngest sister named them Itsy and Bitsy. About 4 weeks ago I impulsively bought an A. geniculata “sling” (it’s pretty big for a sling lmao) and it’s probably one of my calmest T’s, it helped my youngest sister get over her fear of holding T’s🥹. And just two-three weeks ago I impulsively ordered a B. smithi, B. boehemi and a L. parahybana sling. I picked them up at an expo and almost bought more but I was broke💀💀 I love my T’s more than anything tbh, they’re my world💜

Hey Kat! Just impulse bought my very first ever tarantula (an E. Campestratus sling) after seeing your love for yours ❤️ Thanks for all of the info and for helping me overcome my crippling fear of spiders (I held mine when it arrived today!!).
That’s the best impulse tarantula you can find lol 🤍
I tend to avoid shops, cause I know I'd be the same, wanting to rescue everything. I buy my feeders online, just to avoid it. Anyway great little video Kat, well done.
I impulse bought like half of my tarantulas but first I HAVE to know if I have everything to make a setup for it back at home.
good call lol
I impulse bought my first tarantula 4 days ago. Then got 3 more today. lol All because of this channel. Pre-covid I would have never housed spiders...
My boyfriend is now using this video as as a tool to persuade me to let him buy more t’s 😂😂😂
“See? Kat said it’s okay” lmao
I have impulse adopted 2 tarantulas. I never regretted it! 😁
You made it come across clearly in this video that you still need to know basics and explained the info you need. Thanks for the great content! 😁
Since I started keeping as an adult (had one as a kid), I started with a Curly hair last fall….I now have 15 Ts 🥴 ITS AN ADDICTION LOL
I’m from around your area, according to your PO Box, and I think today broke the hottest day for this time of year. The humidity was terrible!!
I feel like we talked about this before lol
@@tarantulakat yeah pretty sure I panic DMd you. Full panic Marley in all its glory.
I impulse bought my two! Tliltocatl albopilosus and avicularia avicularia!
I want more! They’re so cool
I found your Cannal 3 days ago and I like your conntent and your collection of spiders and animals you have :) pls keep on and entertain us like you did befor :)
Best explanations by the best keeper
I impulse bought my b emelia, she's molted once and just got a rehouse a couple days ago 🥰
After watching your channel and others, I decided 2 weeks ago to bite the bullet and buy some tarantulas, I bought a couple of slings and a juvenile LP, the LP was in pre molt and has almost doubled in size in a week, absolutely fascinating, I will be making some more impulse buys on the weekend, well and truly hooked x
EDIT; Impulse buy of the day was a Trinidad Chevron.
I feel like a lot of “impulse buys” like that are really just checking an animal off a list you’ve been wanting lol
@@tarantulakat Yes! I almost got a Pulchra at the expo and an N. Chromatus because they are on my list but I didn't wanna push my luck with my husband asking for more animals after getting the yes on the snake!
My husband is afraid of spiders. Ive been playing your videos loudly daily lol. I think hes almost giving in
My first tarantula was an impulse buy.
Might be wondering what my first one is.
RCF OBT

@@tarantulakat I figured it would go good with my Emperor Scorpion lol
I started in the hobby with jumping spiders, and then I found your content and became super interested in tarantulas, also! (Even tho I told my partner and best friend I would NEVER, lolz). Then I impulse bought Kirby, my A. Avicularia 💕 They’re still a tiny sling, but I am fascinated and obsessed already!!
So went to the store to just get feeders. Then also walked out with a 2in caribena versicolor. 😁
I impulse bought my first tarantula (curly hair) and have been obsessed since!
Thank you for your content!!
not a fan of any spider but love seeing you handle yours looks so cute when you do .
Nothing wrong with impulse buys as long as you look after it’s needs and understand the responsibility
I wish I could impulse buy tarantula 😢
Living in paradise does have it's prices, but I am thankful that you post such interesting videos about your tarantulas.
Just got my first tarantula on Sunday! A. seemani, cutest little sling.
Heh, I wish I could impulse buy anything...I have to travel 3 hours to get to civilization...
We started with two a year later now we have sixteen and want so many more.😅
I am now going to impulse buy one TODAY lol add them to my collection.
This is the latest I've been this year 😭 lol. Love the vids kat 👍
Haha thank you.
I used to be terrified of tarantulas until I held one at an expo a few weeks ago, now I see this…guess I’m going to order my first tarantula soon!😂
I feel a lit better about impulse buying some slings right now 😭💔 Thank you!!!
So of course I had to "save" her. lol
My first Tarantula was an impulse buy, don’t regret it
You can put air plants (Tillandsia) in the dry enclosures, just spray them with water once every 1-2 weeks.
Love your care bear top, so cute 🥰
I've never impulse bought a tarantula since im not allowed to have spiders, but i have with praying mantises lol
I bought an Orchid and an African Stick mantis. They still thrivin' lol
I will never impulse buy a tarantula, but I frequently impulse buy plants and fish lol
Hi I just discovered your channel and now I really want to get a tarantula
Just impulse bought my first T earlier this week. Went to a local exotic pet shop to look for a new enclosure for our older jumping spider and left with a G.rosea lol
My first was an impulse buy a well, an Aphonopelma Calchodes. I still love her, but she is a bit feisty for her species. 🤣 Always kicking hair at me.
