So funny story. One time my friend told about when she was sitting at a campfire and saw an absolutely gigantic white spider on her knee. Being low key arachnophobic she freaked out and smacked it off then ran right off back inside her house (She was staying with her grandparents who live out in the country) when you showed off your aphonopelma chalcodes I thought that that must be the tarantula she had seen, so I pulled up a picture and sent it to her. She confirmed that that was indeed the spider she had seen. The kicker? WE LIVE IN OHIO
Here in Australia, the importation of non-native animals is either illegal or has very tight restrictions for specific keepers (and I'm not complaining, it's good) so we are stuck with the "boring" invertebrates, but they aren't boring at all!! We have tons of beautiful tarantulas and spiders. I think it's great to encourage the keeping of native species.
Dumpster tarantula is my favorite species ❤️❤️ When I first got introduced to the tarantula world I got honestly surprised that they come in different colors than brown! Ive always just assumed they always lived underground so they were brown lol, I love these little guys, even when I was a wee one
Just get one & they don’t have to have anything to do with it, they don’t take up much space so as long as they don’t come across it running down the hallway you should be fine right
I bought a GBB this year and my sister threw a fit lol she calmed down once she saw how small the sling was. And realized that it lives in a pickle jar and it's not coming out.
I love my Aphonopelma Hentzi. She just molded about a month ago she is a Beautiful black with some brown right now. I live in Texas and have had her for about 5 years. She was found in the wild and was house at an oddest museum I worked at for a few years. They no longer could take care of her there so I brought her home with me and have had her ever scents. Aphonopelma are some of my favorite tarantulas. Thank you Kat your videos are amazing very informative and very entertaining.
These guys are so underappreciated. Such beautiful and amazing Tarantulas! And they have such big personalities! Im glad you adore these beautiful creatures as much as i do
From Philippines, Aphonophelmas are very difficult to find because of import laws. Old keepers that had success on importation, doesn't have a breedable mature pair since all males specimen died out before all the females matured due to its very slow growth rate.
Just a question I’m new in the tarantula hobby and I was just wondering why they have some bald spots on their abdomen? I’ve noticed on different species, Not trying to be rude just curious sorry for the dumb question
I agree with you, brown does not mean boring. They are beautiful. The last one may even be mistaken for a G. pulchra at first sight, I guess. I live in Germany, so it is impossible to spot any tarantula outside (at least if it is not an escaped pet tarantula). Must be cool to see them in nature sometimes.
I wish in Australia we had "boring" tarantulas like in America, i want to own at least 1-2 tarantulas but from what i've seen we don't have the cute furry ones and due to our strict laws we can even get them shipped over here :(
@@helenHTID As far as tarantulas go, Africa and Asia have the most defensive, venomous ones. Genera like Stromatopelma, Heteroscodra and Poecilotheria.
@@blunderbuss1395 haha yeah they’re only cute when they don’t scare you half to death in the early hours of the morning sitting on a wall in the dark 😂
Hi Kate, I come from Poland but I live in Norway. I think Aphonopelmas are georgeous and beautiful. I dreamed about A. chalcodes but it was impossible to get them in Poland (I won't mension Norway). But at last I've bought a beautiful subadult female from Germany. And now I have 3 Aphonopelmas: chalcodes, seemanni and bicoloratum :))) By the way, bicoloratum is one of my slowest growing tarantulas :) I dream about visiting desert of Arizona to meet chalcodes in nature :))
Just go for it. I finally got my first after hemming and hawing about it forever for the same reason. You'll end up realizing you're braver than you knew and they're less scary that you thought they were (assuming you stick with new world, ofc).
i learned its way easier to get cooperation while protting a T if you use something thats not in their prey size range, like a wide paint brush of ive even used a large pill bottle lol
Hey Kat You've inspired me to start housing some snails that came back from my brothers move from Texas. I know that tarantulas and snails are pretty different but I was wondering if you had any recommendations on a cage that might work well And I was wondering if you had any other tips for keeping snails I know you probably might not but it was worth the try I want to say thank you though so much you've opened my eyes to wanting little strange/odd fun cute pets 💜💜💜 as always great seeing your 🕷️🕸️ friends
We have a Arizona Blonde, IMO she has the most personality of all of our T's. Plus I like her blonde color, sure it's not the cool blues and purples but I still think she's beautiful in her own way
Great idea to give some love to the "brown tarantula"! Yea, Aphonopelma are perhaps not the Ts that will catch your eye as a beginner, but I think they are charming. I like their stocky, chunky bodies. =) Also, your _A. eutylenum_ is a real beauty!
I have 2 huge beauties female A. Hentzis that are now adults, had them for 8 years and I actually found wondering in Dallas lol they’re amazing like they stay active wondering around in their aquariums :))
I'm much less scared of spiders since I'm watching tarantula videos on RUclips but omg I'm so glad I live in a country that doesn't have any native tarantulas. I think I would die if I ever see one in the wild haha
I have the A. Chalcodes...female and she is my favorite of the bunch. She somewhat interacts with me when I greet her. I know they can't see well beyond 2 inches, but there are times when I talk to her and she crawls towards the glass and starts climbing to the lid. Especially when I say "Sandy...my little punkin!!"....she's my little bubus.....her big ole bootie...it's very twu!!". I think it's just the pressure of breath from talking though. I'm still scared to hold her though. I used to have Arachnaphobia, but thanx to you Kat, Petko, and others I'm definately more interested than scared.
I have an A Chalcodes (Palomino Blond Tarantula) that is the size of a dime. I have a Tliltocatl albopilosus (Nicaragua Perm Tarantula) twice as large but half as old. It's a very fun hobby. I'm hoping to find a Jumping spider before winter. I found 3 a month ago, but didn't have an enclosure ready, now I'm ready and they are hiding really well.

It was the Aphonopelma chalcodes that got me interested in the hobby, but being in the UK, it took a few months to find any for sale. I've a couple, the Desert Blonde & also a Flagstaff Orange, and definitely the former is in no way boring, more super-weird (but beyond sweet & friendly). I've also the A. seemani, who again is a strange little creature compared to many of my non-Aphonopelmas, but in a nice way. Definitely want more, just the usual issue of when they did finally come available, my finances were required elsewhere, so couldn't get all I wanted. Hopefully they'll come up again soon, and be able to add a A. hentzi to the collection too

Brown tarantulas are the first thing that pop into my head when someone says tarantula. In fact Aphonopelma iodius is the only tarantula I've ever encountered in the wild (seen while hiking Mt. Diablo in California.) I don't see them as boring, I see them as classic.

Yes we should especially flowers too.

We can get Calcodes in the uk, but generally wild caught which is a bit of a turn off, for me at least.
Part of that is that there are so many of them, even with wild collection there is zero risk of them going extinct
In co they shut down roads and parts of highways for one of the native species mating migration.
