The critics are not wrong because it’s called an opinion. The movie had amazing action and a great lead actress but the story, and cheesy dialogue and some of the acting was just dreadful. This film won’t do well in the United States(financially)since most American audiences look at this film as just plain weird and it’s based off a manga too which turns them off. Unless it has amazing legs and can make a lot more in the international box office just to break even it’s just going to bomb
I don’t think the majority of things they cited were wrong; I did think that they could not get over them or how jaded they were with the main draw of Alita: her refreshing earnestness in a shitty cynical world... I don’t blame them, but since I know their place in my decisions, I’m not bothered
Rosa is amazing, she brought to life my favorite manga character without a hitch, but if you are defining your successes by how much others hate them, there is something very wrong about you. Make fun of the stupidity of the radical sjw but most stuff that upset them should upset you too. Their techniques might be dumb but their intentions are right. If your intention is just to annoy people, nothing about you is right.

All great points. She’s ruining herself. Alita was actually amazing, the story was great, the visual affects and performances are fucking fantastic. This story just makes me feel good about human beings, it feels good to know that people can still do things out of the kindness of their heart. That little girl is a representative of just how good people can be.

@ukkr Yeah they CG'd Alita's eyes to replica her design in the manga. It is peak uncanny valley and next nobody has been saying it looks good. Cameron took an artsy farsty gamble with that idea and it didn't really pan out well. But the movie keeps it consistent because you see in other moments other cyborg bodies of the same model series as Alita have the same big doe eyes. That being said, the movie is really accurate and on the nose to the manga's content, including bits and pieces they adapted from the OVA (ie including a character who is exclusive to the OVA)- this might be one of the 'best' manga/anime-to-live action movies Hollywood has done.

I'm a fan of this character since the Manga came out. I love the growth of this character. The story was great, the action great. I put Alita up there with the iconic characters.

I had no idea that this was an anime until a review from Vito talking about some of the contrasts with the anime/ manga vs the film adaptation. Have to say as someone who has read some mangas I am kind of dissapointed I had never heard of this Jewel. I have not began reading the manga, yet, but after watching another review I learned that the manga (which as you stated is from the 90s) is still going TO THIS DAY. Not only that but Alita/ Gally continues to develop and face different challenges. I am truly amazed by how amazing a character can still be developed after so many years without losing track of what made the story and the characters themselves unique

If you have a dangerous virus that is fatal, are you gonna heal it yourself? Usually people with prosthetic limbs have unfavorable image not intended. But because of Alita cybernetic look and design it makes the image for the unfortunate people to look futuristic. They no need to shy away they will look different in an awesome way.
Liam Hicks it really is a good movie. The cgi, with the interaction with alita and the other human characters looks so real. It is hard to believe it is cgi and not real.
To be fair, Marvel did the same thing -- giving prosthetic Iron Man arms to a little boy, with Tony Stark himself delivering them in person. Made me sob like a baby both times.
I saw the story about that little girl. It was really touching the amount of effort that went into making something practical but also something a kid would think is cool. All of her friends and classmates must be in awe and wishing they could have something that cool.
At least Alita is. In the manga, she actually founds and trains this group of good and virtuous hunter warriors she wanted to fight monsters like Grewcica with her, called the Kansas Hunter Club.
was on my 2nd watch yesterday. 3d was awesome. too bad after 30 minutes your mind get so use to it but there was a part where they shoot the razor stuff out and it was coming in your face. i was shook unintentionally XD
Definitely a feel good story from Mr. Cameron! The difference between Star Wars/Trek style cybernetics and Alita's cybernetics is part of the cyber-punk style world building. In the big 2 franchises, cybernetics were kindof an afterthought. In cyber-punk inspired settings (Ghost in the Shell, Deus Ex, Cyberpunk, Johnny Mneumonic, Rifts, etc) they push the limits of how much can be replaced before you stop being human. If you're looking to expand away from Disney, you should definitely consider these franchises.

I’d give Alita a 10/10. Like you I was literally blown away. “You know when Jedi fight they’re losing limbs left and right”, that’s classic, you should put that on a shirt. This movie was just so inspiring, and stories like this should inspire people. The strength of people never ceases to amaze me.
The one dislike for this video is from Bri Larson . . . I loved it the first time. I've seen this twice and I can tell you seeing it a second time really fills out things you might have missed the first time. The second time made the movie feel even more solid.
Alita battle angel is one of the best movies I have ever seen in theaters!!! The fact that the production company/studio did this for the sweet little girl is just heartwarming and beautiful.
Just out of the cinema... and I'll have to watch Alita a second time at least. I got completely lost in the worldbuilding. I could go see the movie a dozen times just for the aesthetics of Iron City, that's how beautiful and organic and REAL it feels. And sponsoring a pair of prosthetic arms to Tilly Lockey - this act of true kindness makes it worth the money multiple times.
It's amazing, how they made us fall totally in love with a CGI character. As a result, Alita feels more real as a person, than some other superhero/action types we've seen in recent years. Here's to a sequel

I saw that video you talk about yesterday. That little girl was already a badass for making the most of her life but now she's able to beat up all her bullies like Alita!
In an interview Tilly explained that she wants to show off her bionic arms. She doesn't want to hide them and she doesn't want them to look like normal arms because she wants to celebrate that she looks different.
At the time of watching this video I see that 8 people have disliked it and it makes me wonder just what special kind of special scumbag would dislike a story about a brave little girl being given such an amazing gift? That being said Anna thank you for bringing this incredible story to our attention because it does restore our faith in humanity.
There was one moment in particular that won me over with Alita. It probably didn't register with many folks but when she's first shown the ropes for street rollerbrawling, she gets knocked down by Hugo's friend and he says something along the lines of 'Better be careful, princess!' So I expected her to typically one up over him soon after, which she did, and with an eye rolling tough as nuts attitude say the exact same thing to him. Because girl power! Yeah! Take that, patriarchy! ... but she didn't. She simply moved on and allowed her actions to speak for themselves. That was when I realised how likeable she was. Completely unexpected and damn it is a rare quality in today's world.
Actions speak louder than words. On top of the moment you mentioned, this was shown in the bar scene when Alita kicked Zapan's ass after the hunter warriors rejected her speech and then challenged the rest of them in order to prove herself. You can also see it in Alita's body language when she faces Grewishka for the third and final time. The way she holds herself basically says "Who's the little flea now?" and even the way she casually flicks her sword through one of his tendrils looks like she's swatting a flea. Fortunately, Alita was made by people who respect their audiences, so they didn't need to spell it out for us. They trusted us to see and understand the subtext of that moment with our own eyes and brains.
Thanks for taking the time to point people to that video - it was amazing, I got emotional watching it too! I hope many prosthetics designers watch it and get really inspired. I really hope we’re not too far away (relatively speaking) from creating prosthetics that work as well as Alita’s do, translating brain impulses into finely coordinated movements equivalent to what biological limbs can do. Maybe 20 years? Then having a prosthesis won’t be a barrier to young people becoming actors, and eventually won’t even be a limitation on what characters they can play (i.e. their disability doesn’t have to be built into the story).
Definitely go see it. I'm 43 yo and I was so moved and inspired by Alita. Will see it again in a couple of days. She's totally kickass, respectful and humble at the same time. No SJW BS or male bashing in this movie.
Want to see an even cooler aspect of this story... and no this is not a shot at Cameron.. its a wonderful breakthrough of amputees in general. 3D printing has dropped the cost of ALL prosthetic s by ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE... literally from 40-60 THOUSAND DOLLARS a limb.. to like $500 per limb... 3D printing is a game changer.
Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for giving this movie such good publicity. I went to see it last night with my son and we freaking loved it! In fact the showing we went to had an incredibly diverse audience that would make any SJW proud and every single person walking out of the theater cannot wait for the sequel. Alita is a brilliant character and had some incredible moments. Keep pumping up this movie because it really does deserve the support of sci-fi action adventure fans
I have a heart made of stone, where when tragedy strikes, I never shed a single tear, I think I have just become so used to and adjusted to how fucked and shitty life can be. .....but like a rock, you can shatter me if you only hit just the right spot, and a simple little act of kindness like this, can absolutely bring me to tears. Seriously, what they did for this girl, is beautiful, and it restores my faith in humanity just a little bit
1. The prosthetics help give publicity for the movie, 2. It is a good thing to do for someone, 3. It creates awareness for the makers of the prosthetics, hopefully it will help others who need that company's product.
Oh BTW little clarity here. They didn't just give new fancy looking prosthetics to this girl. They made a new more affordable model of prosthetics ultimately making life easier to everyone who needs prosthetics. This is not just a sweet gesture to 1 little girl but a leap of technological advancement to everyone like her

I guess 20th Century Fox heard some people's opinions about Alita's eyes cause in the reveal trailer her eyes were weird. Looks like they tweaked them just a bit and I honestly thought she looked adorable in the film. Love the film! Big, mad props to the cast and crew!
The arms she got are about 7k per arm, the low end for the same kind of arm was, up until these new ones, about 32k and go up from there all the way to 100k. She got a sweet new pair, but just the fact they they helped, via 3D printing tech, to get the price of good usable non-claw arms down to 7k is simply amazing. This is how you do good PR.

So I've only seen people who are (from what I can see) passionate about the manga and the story talking about the movie doing the word-of-mouth kind of marketing (even those who doesn't even know about the manga but are passionate about comics/manga/other related art or medium) as opposed to people who I can immediately see are just at best tangentially interested in the comics (by virtue of it being made into a movie). And so far they say it's good or worth watching not because of other factors unrelated to the actual movie, but how it is actually made. And it feels good listening to people who share the same interests as me talk about a movie about the same points I am interested in and with authority or know-how on the scene or community the movie was made for. This is nice. I have grown to resent people talking about the importance or the need of a movie because of the ideology it sells. People seem to be concerned on the outward message instead of the actual art of movie making, or even coherent and basic narrative structure, which is sad because as if they were to be taken as pieces that should push forward an agenda, then the medium in which it is delivered should be crafted with the utmost care and passion about the medium so that the agenda can then be properly consumed by the masses. It feels like they didn't love their agenda enough to make a compelling film that pushes the boundaries or at least pushes people into action.

I'm not gonna lie, you were the person who encouraged me to watch "Alita: Battle Angel" and... I am going to the cinema again on Wednesday. This movie is not perfect, has some flaws, some stuff that could be easily thrown away, but the visual side, the fight scenes and, first and foremost, the main protagonist and her evolution - WOW. I love Alita and this comes from a woman who (surprisingly maybe) is usually quite sceptic towards female leads. Maybe it is because we've been recently flooded with those overpowered, annoying, "strong female characters". Anyway, I don't remember when was the last time I felt so great after watching a movie. I am not into "girl power" and this kind of stuff, but after seeing Alita I simply feel happy and stronger. And I am pretty sure many other women could say the same thing. She is a very likable character, one about whom I can honestly say "I look up to her". She is just awesome, ironically the most human character I've seen in a long time. I'll defend muh girl Alita any time.

@@zzygyy I got into Anime in the year 1996. Dragonball Z was the first. Then in 1998, was my first convention. Lets just say eyes wide open, and it changed my life.
I had no idea that this was an anime until a review from Vito talking about some of the contrasts with the anime/ manga vs the film adaptation.
Have to say as someone who has read some mangas I am kind of dissapointed I had never heard of this Jewel. I have not began reading the manga, yet, but after watching another review I learned that the manga (which as you stated is from the 90s) is still going TO THIS DAY. Not only that but Alita/ Gally continues to develop and face different challenges.
I am truly amazed by how amazing a character can still be developed after so many years without losing track of what made the story and the characters themselves unique

This isn't about big pharma, this is about helping amputees get new legs and arms, it's an accomplishment, or do you think that is a bad thing to help people with missing limbs??
I get that home remedies are good, but not everything can be healed by ourselves, cuz when something really bad happens to you one day, you'll crying for doctors to help you.

Usually people with prosthetic limbs have unfavorable image not intended. But because of Alita cybernetic look and design it makes the image for the unfortunate people to look futuristic. They no need to shy away they will look different in an awesome way.
Rose Salazar, Rodriguez, Cameron, and the design team at Weta materially advanced the status of amputees the world over.

I saw the story about that little girl. It was really touching the amount of effort that went into making something practical but also something a kid would think is cool. All of her friends and classmates must be in awe and wishing they could have something that cool.
Saw the movie and thought ... "Hunter Warriors ... way better than Noble Warrior Heroes." :D
At least Alita is. In the manga, she actually founds and trains this group of good and virtuous hunter warriors she wanted to fight monsters like Grewcica with her, called the Kansas Hunter Club.

The difference between Star Wars/Trek style cybernetics and Alita's cybernetics is part of the cyber-punk style world building. In the big 2 franchises, cybernetics were kindof an afterthought. In cyber-punk inspired settings (Ghost in the Shell, Deus Ex, Cyberpunk, Johnny Mneumonic, Rifts, etc) they push the limits of how much can be replaced before you stop being human. If you're looking to expand away from Disney, you should definitely consider these franchises.

Real heroes will always be infinitely more interesting than than Mary Sues no matter how many they make and pay people to think they are the greatest, while simultaneously bashing something as heart warming as this
I’d give Alita a 10/10. Like you I was literally blown away. “You know when Jedi fight they’re losing limbs left and right”, that’s classic, you should put that on a shirt. This movie was just so inspiring, and stories like this should inspire people. The strength of people never ceases to amaze me.

I loved it the first time. I've seen this twice and I can tell you seeing it a second time really fills out things you might have missed the first time. The second time made the movie feel even more solid.

Alita battle angel is one of the best movies I have ever seen in theaters!!! The fact that the production company/studio did this for the sweet little girl is just heartwarming and beautiful.
Just out of the cinema... and I'll have to watch Alita a second time at least. I got completely lost in the worldbuilding. I could go see the movie a dozen times just for the aesthetics of Iron City, that's how beautiful and organic and REAL it feels. And sponsoring a pair of prosthetic arms to Tilly Lockey - this act of true kindness makes it worth the money multiple times.
Stories like this keep oyr hope in humanity alive. Aren't enough acts of kindness like this in the world.

I saw that video you talk about yesterday. That little girl was already a badass for making the most of her life but now she's able to beat up all her bullies like Alita!
In an interview Tilly explained that she wants to show off her bionic arms. She doesn't want to hide them and she doesn't want them to look like normal arms because she wants to celebrate that she looks different.
At the time of watching this video I see that 8 people have disliked it and it makes me wonder just what special kind of special scumbag would dislike a story about a brave little girl being given such an amazing gift? That being said Anna thank you for bringing this incredible story to our attention because it does restore our faith in humanity.

That's awesome that they were able to do that for her.
There was one moment in particular that won me over with Alita. It probably didn't register with many folks but when she's first shown the ropes for street rollerbrawling, she gets knocked down by Hugo's friend and he says something along the lines of 'Better be careful, princess!' So I expected her to typically one up over him soon after, which she did, and with an eye rolling tough as nuts attitude say the exact same thing to him. Because girl power! Yeah! Take that, patriarchy!
... but she didn't. She simply moved on and allowed her actions to speak for themselves.
That was when I realised how likeable she was. Completely unexpected and damn it is a rare quality in today's world.
Actions speak louder than words. On top of the moment you mentioned, this was shown in the bar scene when Alita kicked Zapan's ass after the hunter warriors rejected her speech and then challenged the rest of them in order to prove herself.
You can also see it in Alita's body language when she faces Grewishka for the third and final time. The way she holds herself basically says "Who's the little flea now?" and even the way she casually flicks her sword through one of his tendrils looks like she's swatting a flea. Fortunately, Alita was made by people who respect their audiences, so they didn't need to spell it out for us. They trusted us to see and understand the subtext of that moment with our own eyes and brains.
Thanks for taking the time to point people to that video - it was amazing, I got emotional watching it too! I hope many prosthetics designers watch it and get really inspired.
I really hope we’re not too far away (relatively speaking) from creating prosthetics that work as well as Alita’s do, translating brain impulses into finely coordinated movements equivalent to what biological limbs can do. Maybe 20 years?
Then having a prosthesis won’t be a barrier to young people becoming actors, and eventually won’t even be a limitation on what characters they can play (i.e. their disability doesn’t have to be built into the story).

Want to see an even cooler aspect of this story... and no this is not a shot at Cameron.. its a wonderful breakthrough of amputees in general. 3D printing has dropped the cost of ALL prosthetic s by ORDERS OF MAGNITUDE... literally from 40-60 THOUSAND DOLLARS a limb.. to like $500 per limb... 3D printing is a game changer.

Hey, I just wanted to say thanks for giving this movie such good publicity. I went to see it last night with my son and we freaking loved it! In fact the showing we went to had an incredibly diverse audience that would make any SJW proud and every single person walking out of the theater cannot wait for the sequel. Alita is a brilliant character and had some incredible moments. Keep pumping up this movie because it really does deserve the support of sci-fi action adventure fans

I have a heart made of stone, where when tragedy strikes, I never shed a single tear, I think I have just become so used to and adjusted to how fucked and shitty life can be.
.....but like a rock, you can shatter me if you only hit just the right spot, and a simple little act of kindness like this, can absolutely bring me to tears. Seriously, what they did for this girl, is beautiful, and it restores my faith in humanity just a little bit
1. The prosthetics help give publicity for the movie, 2. It is a good thing to do for someone, 3. It creates awareness for the makers of the prosthetics, hopefully it will help others who need that company's product.
Just saw Alita tonight and am really hoping they make a sequel.
Oh BTW little clarity here. They didn't just give new fancy looking prosthetics to this girl. They made a new more affordable model of prosthetics ultimately making life easier to everyone who needs prosthetics. This is not just a sweet gesture to 1 little girl but a leap of technological advancement to everyone like her
Highly entertaining, keeps you wanting more, full of surprises. They made great splicing manga, anime, cyberpunk, and real movie into one masterpiece. AWESOME
I guess 20th Century Fox heard some people's opinions about Alita's eyes cause in the reveal trailer her eyes were weird. Looks like they tweaked them just a bit and I honestly thought she looked adorable in the film. Love the film! Big, mad props to the cast and crew!

The arms she got are about 7k per arm, the low end for the same kind of arm was, up until these new ones, about 32k and go up from there all the way to 100k. She got a sweet new pair, but just the fact they they helped, via 3D printing tech, to get the price of good usable non-claw arms down to 7k is simply amazing.

Tilly has been working and trialling for OpenBionics for years as well as being an ambassador for the company itself. The arms themselves cost approx 15k USD and had upto date prosthetic's before this
So I've only seen people who are (from what I can see) passionate about the manga and the story talking about the movie doing the word-of-mouth kind of marketing (even those who doesn't even know about the manga but are passionate about comics/manga/other related art or medium) as opposed to people who I can immediately see are just at best tangentially interested in the comics (by virtue of it being made into a movie). And so far they say it's good or worth watching not because of other factors unrelated to the actual movie, but how it is actually made.
And it feels good listening to people who share the same interests as me talk about a movie about the same points I am interested in and with authority or know-how on the scene or community the movie was made for. This is nice.
I have grown to resent people talking about the importance or the need of a movie because of the ideology it sells. People seem to be concerned on the outward message instead of the actual art of movie making, or even coherent and basic narrative structure, which is sad because as if they were to be taken as pieces that should push forward an agenda, then the medium in which it is delivered should be crafted with the utmost care and passion about the medium so that the agenda can then be properly consumed by the masses. It feels like they didn't love their agenda enough to make a compelling film that pushes the boundaries or at least pushes people into action.
I agree with what you said it does give me hope when I see acts like this happen and I hope one day all of humanity moves in this direction as a whole. We are one race the human race and learn to help and respect each other. Have a great day and to you as well may the force be with you.

With Captain Marvel's crowd sourcing of funds to give girls a chance to see their movie, the act of kindness is apparently self serving. It was like saying, "Help them help me" lol... And why just poor girls? There's probably just as many poor unfortunate boys out there to help so why exclude them?

Honestly actions are much louder than words, yet some people go by words alone like wth. If there needs o be a strong female character then it should be alita not captain sjw over there. giving prosthetic arns to a girl who had to have her arms amputated now that's real heroism right there, not parading around saying "let's donate to have all these girls see this movie" but do literally nothing about it. I haven't seen Alita yet but just by these actions alone I feel even MORE wanting to see it

I'm not gonna lie, you were the person who encouraged me to watch "Alita: Battle Angel" and... I am going to the cinema again on Wednesday. This movie is not perfect, has some flaws, some stuff that could be easily thrown away, but the visual side, the fight scenes and, first and foremost, the main protagonist and her evolution - WOW. I love Alita and this comes from a woman who (surprisingly maybe) is usually quite sceptic towards female leads. Maybe it is because we've been recently flooded with those overpowered, annoying, "strong female characters". Anyway, I don't remember when was the last time I felt so great after watching a movie. I am not into "girl power" and this kind of stuff, but after seeing Alita I simply feel happy and stronger. And I am pretty sure many other women could say the same thing. She is a very likable character, one about whom I can honestly say "I look up to her". She is just awesome, ironically the most human character I've seen in a long time. I'll defend muh girl Alita any time.
