Aggressive yet mellow, according to Dave. Also, the camera cut off just after he said "Could have been longer." So this one definitely left Dave wanting more.

It probably wasn't left off because they didn't think it was good enough. I'm sure it was just because it didn't fit with the tone of the album. King of Limbs was really bitsy-electronic and loop-based. This was... not that at all. That's why it's a b-side.
I'm less sure at why the Butcher was left off, given how the album's only 8 tracks. That would've gone so well on it. Same thing with Staircase. Supercollider... yeah, that one was a bit overlong and not up to par I think, I get why that one's a b-side. Still, very much in-style for KoL. Really, Daily Mail was the only departure of the lot, style-wise. Anything else from the b-sides could've easily been on the album. Feral's actually grown on me a fair bit, but still it sounds like a b-side to me, always wonder how that one made it when Butcher got left off (not that there wasn't space for both, mind).
I'm one of these crazy prolific songwriters who just sweat songs but is completely impractical at getting anything actually done. So I'm always messing about with album listings and stuff like that. Speaking from that perspective (as well as fairly normal song lengths), I'm not really satisfied when an album doesn't have 10 songs on it. That's what I always aim for, feels like a nice round target. Usually ends up on a listen-through, not overstaying a welcome, but not feeling underdone either. I think 8 tends to feel underdone, dunno about you.
Out of the whole project only Butcher, Lotus Flower and Daily Mail really stand out to me. There are other tracks I like but it's nudging Pablo Honey in disappointment levels. A definite dip. Plus I wasn't happy the direction they took Morning Mr Magpie, talk about a destroyed groove. Could've been a real throwback, that one. Had hints of Electioneering and There There to it. Worst studio transformation from early days, imo (best is Reckoner).
Just my own armchair opinions, naturally.
Fyi it was released as a digital single with Staircase in 2011. So how is that a b-side?
@@vincevirtua I guess by the logic that a-sides are album-tracks and b-sides are non-album-tracks? Or maybe by the way that since the decline of physical media as means of determining song releases, people tend to forget what does or doesn't get released as a single. I did, until you reminded just then.
@@Torthrodhel I would personally still define a single as an A side. This was technically a double A-side, as both songs made up the single. A bit like say Strawberry Fields Forever/Penny Lane was for The Beatles.

The "In the basement" sessions of this album is far superior to the studio version and incidentally this particular song was not on the album... So, what you're seeing here is an iteration of a song they're doing live for the first time
Are there longer versions of this song? Dave really was left wanting more.
