I would think Jonny, the guitarist, scored it. He's composed scores for films like There Will Be Blood
And Phantom Thread, and The Master, Inherent Vice, You were never really here, and the upcoming Licorice Pizza!
Johnny Greenwood, lead guitar, scored this. Guest conductor of the BBC London Symphony Orchestra. He did the score for the film 'There Will be Blood" which is a masterpiece in and of itself. Thanks for the reaction.
Additionally, a more classical score that Johnny Greenwood composed was for the film "The Phantom Thread" Not for rock heads, but Johnny is making a name for himself scoring original music for films. Paul Thomas Anderson, one of the most respected directors in Hollywood at the moment, almost exclusively uses Johnny for his original music.
@@pattyfree2970 absolutely Phantom Thread`s score is Hauntingly beautiful.
I always think of Johnny as a chemist hunched over in his laboratory (while on stage during shows)
Edit: If you'd like to hear this song perfectly scored to an incredible cinematic scene on the FX show LEGION, check it out, also on RUclips.
He composes for orchestra. I don't believe he's ever conducted.
@@fastenbulbous Never seen him conducting agreed, but I could be mistaken. Fantastic composer though. And 'scorer' whichever one, I think Johnny is the brains behind the scenes.
For those who don't know, The Daily Mail is just a B-SIDE TRACK in Radiohead's discography 🤷♂️ Also they loved this performance so much that they released this as the studio version itself
It wasn't a b-side, it was released as a single with Staircase, also an amazing song.
That's Radiohead for you. I've seen you dislike multiple of their songs, but there's always at least one song out there for each person. I give you credit for still giving them a shot.
Man as a huge Radiohead fan, I appreciate that you don't pretend to like everything. Makes it much more meaningful as a reaction when you actually DO because i know you mean it. I hope people start recommending more songs from them that you'd actually like, but thanks for keeping it real!
There' have been a few Radiohead songs I really liked, a couple even got up into the 9's.
When Radiohead came out, they had a few songs that rocked (ie Creep). Most of their other songs were alright. But over the years, they've evolved into a different beast. Radiohead's tinkering and experimentation with composition has, in my opinion, made them one of the greatest musical groups out there.
Amazing song, definitely in my top 10 for Radiohead and that's not an easy list to get on.
And Heretic if you are going to listen to it again I would recommend the live version from Colbert Report, sounds great as well and it’s a lot easier to see what the whole band and the horn section is doing.
I take my hat off too you!! You know you're music!! You give everything a chance that you hear!! And you have the ear!! Fair play to you !!
Brilliant song!! Greenwood is amazing
FEELIN' YOU Declan!!!
I'm glad people are recommending Radiohead songs you can get into more often lately.
It was only a matter of time before you had this reaction to radiohead! they're so damn good I'm glad you're giving them another chance
You definitely have to check out The National Anthem or literally anything off of A Moon Shaped Pool
Thom is usually the main driving force for song writing, particularly the lyrics; however, Johnny is the one who always writes all the horn, strings, etc. As well as his own guitar parts, obviously.
Each member plays a major role in writing. They are one of the few bands out there who are truly the sum of their parts. Remove one member and they're no longer Radiohead
I think jonny the guitarist scored it, love or hate radiohead you have to admit they are one of the most talented bands of all time. If you like this you need to checkout staircase from the basement...
The initial comment about the dissonance in that vocal melody: Making gorgeous melodies out of dissonance is sort of Radiohead’s bread and butter. I mean just look at that chord progression on Creep, their one radio hit. How many radio hits have a C moving into a Cm?
The harmonic modulations ar both beautiful and very original. Funny thing about this song is, that I always had the phantasy that this might have been what the Beatles might have sounded if they had stayed together.
Jonny Greenwood scored it. He's a musical genius.
Think this was Johnny for the scoring. Fun fact; Thom can't actually read sheet music. Despite this, he too has scored for film. I'd love to see you react to the album version of 'the numbers'. Their best use of strings in my humble opinion
ahhh one of my favourites 🧡, been playing this song on drums and piano recently
Both jonny and thom score and arrange - jonny however is the one responsible For it in Radiohead. As others have stated he conducts the london contemporary orchestra- he’s done numerous movies and won many awards (mostly For Paul Thomas Anderson movies) and is classically trained. There are many
Similar works in the catalogue to explore!
I love the build up and payoff with this song. It's become a favorite of mine from Radiohead.
Nothing makes me happier than seeing David enjoying a Radiohead song :)
*Finishes performing a masterpiece
Thom Yorke: Yeah, let's move on...
I first heard this song playing in the series Ozark. I said what the hell was that. Became a Radiohead fan that instant. I regret I was a late fan because I would die to see them live.
Another thing that I didn't see anyone comment on. Jonny Greenwood did the scoring indeed. But. He's the only person of the group that has been classically trained on any instrument. Also, the only member without a university degree (even though he was three weeks into a degree in music and psychology)
It's odd but oddly catchy. It's got a McCartney Beatles sound(reminds me of She's So Heavy). It's not a a song, it's a composition! Wow 8.8. You really did like it! Great reaction.
Jonny greenwood!!
If you watched LEGION (via FX) it was placed in an incredibly appropriate scene.
Could be Thom but Johnny has always been the major producer and background genius to their scores and movie production music. I’d say Johnny 90% not sure but based off their history…..that’s why I say this
Coming from your Alter Bridge reviews. You gotta check out some of Tremonti/Myles' outside work. Let That Be Us and Marching in Time for the former. From the latter I especially recommend Ides of March; the song is incredible!
Their multi-instrumentalist/lead-guitarrist Jonny Greenwood scored the horn section (as he does all their songs involving symphony.) He's actually scored many Hollywood films including Licorice Pizza, The Power of the Dog, Inherent Vice & There Will Be Blood, twice nominated for Oscars.
I love your reactions. I'd recommend The National Anthem, by Radiohead. It has a groove and lots of horns.
Life In a Glass House with the 3 great Jazz horn players in the great live concert om Jools Holland.
You enjoyed trying to work out this track as much as you did listening to it. Awesome!
00:02:20 "What the heck is that?" I think it's a custom-designed tuba the session musician Oren Marshall had designed (ruclips.net/video/juImliQNKhU/видео.html)
Yo I did not expect you to guess flugelhorn. That’s exactly what it is. My jaw literally dropped though haha.
This is, hands down, my favorite performance from Radiohead; all time. partly because of sentimental reasons, but I also enjoyed the the instrumentation of this song. This song swells and swells and just gets me hyped every single time I listen to it.
It's Johnny does the scoring I believe. 👏🇮🇪
Jonny Greenwood is holding Radiohead on his back
I'm almost certain that Johnny Greenwood (the scrawny guitarist with hair in his face) scored it. He is a composer and has done many scores for movies.
You should consider a listen to the other side of the single 'Staircase'. They also did that on this same Basement show.
DH, I'm digging this,too !
What a track!
Check out the basement version of Bloom if you haven't heard it. They use this same horn section and it is glorious. Miles above the studio version.
As loads of others have already mentioned, Jonny did the score. You should check out his work from the film Phantom Thread. "House of Woodcock" is something I think you'd really appreciate. There Will Be Blood is also really great. (Both films by Paul Thomas Anderson)
Scoring has become a lot more easy due to notation software that allows you to write a score in normal G-clef, then taking it apart and assign pieces to other instruments and depending on the instruments you chose, it will automatically choose the appropriate clef and transposition for that instrument. Of course you still need to know whether the music you write for that instrument is technically appropriate for that instrument and whether it fits within the rest musically as you wanted it to,
Proper in depth knowledge of the instruments is always good naturally, but a requirement less so.
This live performance (all tracks) is far superior to the actual album, the brass section lifts the songs to another level. This should have been released as the album. I'm glad you enjoyed it
we said the same thing at the end "that was cool" lol
I am going to guess that Jonny Greenwood arranged it. Check out some of his film score work.
The entire brass section scoring was done by Jonny Greenwood FYI David ( he plays something like 40 instruments 😯)…… I love this song & wonder why it was left off ‘The King of Limbs’ album tbh. The Daily mail is referencing a very right wing newspaper in Britain…not my cup of tea tbh …. Check out the lyrics if u have a min ……great review 🤘
It was in response to the phone tapping scandal, wasn't it? I think I remember that being the particular thing.
Haha... Thom doesn't know how to read music at all. Jonny on the other hand is an Academy Award nominated movie soundtrack composer, so he is doing that. ❤️😊
Fkn love this track, it IS impressive, but then, all of Radiohead's stuff is.
It's crazy this isn't even on any album.
Great
Check out "the National Anthem"
why he always looks like he has to down some liquor to hear a radiohead song?
Beats me, I hardly ever touch the stuff.
It's the 'brass section', bloody Americans and horns.🤦♂
I gotta say you keep reacting to some of less accessible and songs of less excellence in general. React to House of Cards, 15 Step, or Let Down. I’ll keep it simple at 3.
I'm just reacting to what's being requested, and using the links that the requesters give me.
you definitely worship Creep if you don’t think this is a great song
I love people reacting to some of the less obvious picks. With a band like Radiohead that doesn't necessarily mean worse. Everyone has their preferences.
