Brazil’s insurrection is just the latest in a series of attacks on democracy around the world. So we’re talking to Anne Applebaum, a staff writer at The Atlantic and author of the book “Twilight of Democracy” about why autocracy is making a comeback and how we stop it. We dive into democracy’s roots as an unstable form of government, the role of global elites on both sides, and why fascism is really just a money-laundering scheme.

@@EricBarthDev Gosh I couldn’t disagree more. Jon Stewart has a completely different style of programming with his podcasts, compared to satirical, comedy current affairs programme. I see the same display of intrinsic understanding of issues, the same empathy for in need or being undermined by those who care little for anyone but themselves, and the same passion for maintaining democracy and fairness for all. Thankfully, I also see the same blatant criticism and true exposure of those who are so deserving. Does it still get a little caustic? Yes, with the ridicule and humour that targets in such a way that appropriate attention will be highlighted where change is necessary. Yeah, I am a fan. Perhaps those in need of criticism and ridiculing exposure are on a larger platform on the stage of Donald Trumpty Dumpty’s coat tails, causing Jon Stewart’s commentary to seem more one sided - less balanced. He still tells it from all perspectives because his discussions on topic, and interviews with guests, are thorough. Personally, the distortion of peoples’ empathy and conscious activism to counteract fascistic power schemes, into the description of “woak ” as a negative perspective is one sided and seemingly supportive of those outspoken numbers who LOVE free speech, provided it is in agreement with their perspective only. I hope the term “woak” soon disappears so people revert to accurate expressions of what they feel.

@@EricBarthDevdefine “woak” or woke, if that’s what you meant.
Woke is defined as being aware of injustice or being open to admitting something is unjust.
There are degrees, as there is with anything, as to what any given person sees as injustice.
The idea is really “I’ll help you try to end the injustice that hurts you, and someone will hopefully help me if/when I’m ever being unfairly treated.”
Woke is the opposite of indifference. It is anti-selfish. You don’t have to agree that a particular injustice needs to be fought right away, or at all, but you have to put yourself in someone’s place and admit that what is happening to them isn’t fair.
Think about it like this…if laws are made that anyone having your hair color can’t get married, get a good job, join the military, get into a good school, get credit, or buy a house…you can dye your hair.
      But what if you couldn’t?
And worse, What if everyone around you just didn’t care that the laws weren’t fair, and you just were stuck with your hair color and the discrimination that it brought? Wouldn’t you get angry? Wouldn’t you do whatever you could to wake people up to how unfair the laws were?
If you can’t change your hair color you need to change the laws, and you need help for that. You need people to be aware of the problem. You need them to be “woke”.

I read Ms. Applebaum's book, The Twilight of Democracy. The thing that struck me most was her explanation of why some of us are attracted to authoritarianism. She said (paraphrasing) that about one-third of the population of any country has an authoritarian predisposition. Authoritarian predisposition favors homogeneity and order. Libertarian predisposition favors diversity and difference. Authoritarianism is NOT political. It appeals, simply, to people who cannot tolerate complexity. It is not right-wing or left-wing; it is a frame of mind, not a set of ideas. It is an instinct. Wow! This makes so much sense to me. I have been trying for so long to understand how all this could happen to the freedom loving people of the U.S.A.

" is to say we've allowed the government to do what financial powers want because we The People have allowed ourselves to be kept far away from the actual policies that decide what government should do and who should pay for it. We want benefits without responsibility, and we therefore get the government we deserve.

Sorry - I'm hot sure if that's supposed to be a joke or you are taking a cliched aphorism literally. Either way it's a chance for me to get all pedantic up in here 😁. History repeating itself could also be about natural events like salmon returning to where they were born or disasters like active volcanoes or earthquakes that happen over and over again with the passing of time. But human history, ancient and modern, is the record of what some person or people did in the distant or recent past. So when someone says "history is repeating itself" they are saying that the modern historical action(s) or event(s) is/are a repetition, or at least similar to, the past historical action(s) or event(s). So you aren't wrong, but it's just easier to say the thing about history repeating itself - or rhyming.

Jon! The thing that the establishment in failed democracies do not see is that all of this anger and angst exists for a reason. That reason is we are not a representative democracy. We are a Tweedist Plutocracy - corporate, special interests and elites control elections through money. They own the process by which candidtates are presented for election. The representatives are bought and sold. The public is sold the illusion of choice but that veil has been lifted for a long time now. People understand that they are tied over a barrel and both sides take turns screwing them. The feeling that there is no escape, that there is no way for the system to correct, is what drives the anger and the willingness to follow demagogues - because we really do live under the thumb of an elite that makes the rules and suppresses the masses. I know you are aware of it. I don't have to lay out the case - you've seen the Princeton study showing the public has no effect on laws passed while elites get everything they want. There doesn't have to be a secret cabal - the system warps itself driven by self interested people who use the rules to gain power for themselves. So rail against the Plutocracy and the fact that we don't live in a representative democracy. Rail against the fact that if this not corrected the public will raise up someone willing to burn it all down. That is the root of the rot - not Trump or Stone or any of the other maggiots that feed off the suffering. Address the suffering itself - the average person knows he will be a slave excahnging labor just to live another day to work. Most people have no path to a better life for their children. Everyone sees the obscene level of wealth and self dealing in government and elite circles. That deserves to be burned down. But predators will harness that power and make it worse. Someone has to harness that power to make it better.

Lots of people make up history and lots will be forgotten, but as long as some of us remember and it is written down, it isn't truly lost, and someday these facts and peoples will be remembered yet again. It’s quite the thing to hear this stuff coming from people from the West of Ireland (my home region), given that only a century ago, the Black and Tans were wandering round razing local businesses and terrorizing people. Or that less than 200 years ago, people there had no rights to their own land, many starving to death.

    • @GuerillaBunny
      @GuerillaBunny Год назад +4

      Some of my thoughts:
First, we need to understand that autocracy isn't the root of a problem, but a symptom. It persists, because people think it provides value to society and their personal interests. And while autocracy is thus maintained, it's making its best to cultivate a population that wants it. One of the main cultivation strategies is controlling people's world views. Schools, media, religious institutions, and so on.
The crucial element is hope. If you can believe in a brighter future, you're already resistant to the "solutions" autocrats are selling. But I can't stress this enough: I don't mean a brighter future that will just happen, but one that takes a lot of work and personal sacrifice, because our entire paradigm is built for cynicism and selfishness. It's a world-view cultivated with billions of dollars in advertisement, lobbying, corruption, and so on. Creature comforts are a drug to keep us docile. The road to a brighter future might sound dismal, but the alternative is more so: The belief that the cost of our well-being does not matter. That the people who work themselves to death for pennies so that we can have our iPhones and Playstations don't matter. That the environment doesn't matter. That is how people get tempted by xenophobic rhetoric, and sucked into fascism.
It's a complicated issue, but it starts with the simplest factor: You. Join a union or start one. Don't become complacent. Get active in local communities. Be a voice for hope. We need to stand united, and we mustn't allow ourselves to succumb to despair.

I was tuning my 12-string guitar while listening to this discussion. The process of tuning relies on harmonic resonance to determine when each string is in-tune. Sympathetic sound waves reinforce one another, producing deeply resonant, harmonic chords inside the instrument.
I realized that the global dissemination of ideas is very similar. Each "voice" in any political discussion passes from person to person in a pattern that mimics harmonic convergence. People find that they share a set of ideas/beliefs/values with many other people, and these shared beliefs become reinforced and amplified. A "gestalt".
