- This week we share the discussion for our Portofino 52 about achieving better upwind performance. We are informed that Code 0s and symmetrical spinnakers are now "old" and obsolete!!! What do you think of this new concept for future sails???
We also take you through our ongoing sailing journey down from Spinalonga Bay to Agios Nicolas, Crete on our Leopard 45 catamaran. We also share the processes we use to anchor and how we use "transits" to check if the anchor is set or still dragging. Hopefully useful info for all viewers.

We attach our bridle on the chain with a huge DIY soft shackle. Easy, fast, secure. We even attach Ti’amā on mooring buoys sometimes with the bridle and the soft shackle 😉
Great idea - we tried but I was not happy with the lack of tension on the chain and thought is might slip. How tight do you do it?

As sailors purchasing an incredible catamaran the best the market has to offer for your needs , the highest priority are your sails. The enjoyment of the best sails far outweighs anything else on your yacht. That’s why you havnt bought a power catamaran. Buy the best . Your hearts will sing as you fly across the water.

Do you ever purchase their homemade, bottled, salad dressing? I assume they make their own but it wouldn’t surprise me if they import it. I’m not sure about your choice of sail but durability would be my priority. The longer it lasts and ease of use would be my determining factor.

Each village has something unique and sometimes it obvious and other times you have to dig deeper to find

Thanks KG, yes the main difference is not having the non torsion cable in the front edge. Unfortunately all the different sail makers use different terms for the same of similar things so it gets really confusing...
Attaching the bridle when only one person available. We have been using a 6mm soft shackle for the last two seasons. Never failed or worn out. Just another idea
Thanks John, we have tried it but struggled to get it to hold on the hook and alone it did not get seem to get tight enough.
Good tips. The diagram is how a monohull moves at anchor. The anchor chain on a cat swings the same, but the cat can have a secondary swing around the bridle. ( I cannot find a better diagram on the net.) You don't notice this when you're on board a cat, I think it's most noticeable when you're on a monohull with a couple of other monohulls nearby and at least one cat. Even in a light breeze it'll often be pointing in a different direction.
Code 0 or no? Haven't a clue. What I've been encountering are people saying not to reef the jib because it makes the shape inefficient. Isn't that the whole point of reefing?
My friends on the Harbors Unknown just released a video on their Oxley Martin. I thought it was a parasailor because they had four sheets on it. I'm thinking that the two extra sheets cleated up front. move the vector of force transfer forward from where the sheets go through the first block (midships). This might be more efficient. Probably doesn't matter that much. They're terrific downwind sails.
(And my dock mates told me about getting rid of the in boom fullers on their ketch. Hated them. Nothing but trouble -- and yep, they had one of those off brands you mentioned in a previous video.)
Thanks Will and nice to hear from you! The Oxley parasails can be used with only 2 lines as they are quite stable but having 4 lines allows you to gybe without dropping the sock - but lots more lines and complexity.... We will see how well or not the boom Furler performs after the launch and after the money is paid! Fingers crossed....
but, a Code 0 is a very specific sail. It exploits a loophole in the rating rule - it has mid girth measurement that means it rates as a spinnaker (but nonetheless a small kite, so no rating penalty), but operates as a full cut headsail. If it were a headsail, it would be huge, and would incur a rsignificant ating penalty. As an aside, it was favourite downwind kite when it blew above 30knots - it's flat and bulletproof. We could easily get 25 knots of boat speed (quickish for a 40' monohull...)
Interesting - obviously for the non- racers those ratings are not significant but it is the upwind performance in light airs that is great! We go 4.7knots in 6.2 knots of wind on a Leopard 45 - amazing!
North sails 3di are the top performance sails on the market. There will always be another company striving to be better. It could well be one sails that are a step ahead. For sure you can’t go wrong with their new thinking. Imagine the pleasure of having cutting edge sails on your amazing yacht .

Some catamarans anchor from one bow, the boat then sit slightly to one side, so reducing veering

Just a couple anchoring ideas we use. We never set the anchor without the bridle to avoid windless damage. No to side hooks reduces chain strength by over 50% with side sheer on the chain and they fall off easily. Way easier to use a Dyneema soft shackle or a Dyneema strop cow hitched to the chain. Make it yourself or buy one from Manson. Happy Sailing. SV Stray Kitty

Soft shackle through a chain link or Search "Mantus 8mm Snubber Pendant For Anchor Chain Or Line" I made a dyneema pendant with a loop on each end buried 72x thickness of Dyneema. Fun with Dyneema.😊

The new breed of sails seem pretty amazing. But how robust are they??? Are you back and forth in the Med or trade wind sailing around the world. How often do imagine sailing at 50-70? If you're coming home, won't you'll be needing a selection of down wind sails?
Hi Admin, thanks for the comment and yes we will still have the Oxley for deep downwind trade wind sailing and the 50-70* is annoying if you need to go that way in very light airs - we have used our Code 0 lots on the L45...

Thanks Glyn for your comment! We will have the Oxley parasailor for deep won wind cruising exp long distances and trades. Just for ease, we do not want the high level excitedly of small spinnakers in high winds so would drop the Oxley and go to whites above 15 knots apparent / 20 knots true...

SO I'll just say that I love the background information you provide each week on your destinations. Great stuff! How did you get the diving footage? Interesting shipwreck. It's interesting that you started to discuss the surrounding restaurants and cafes, as I was going to ask if you could do more review of these if you stay in places for longer than one night...it would give you an opportunity to visit more than one and you could compare them. Perhaps that is too an expensive an idea (dinning out all the time). Anyway, just a thought. My best wishes going forward. Where next? Fair 💨's and following 🌊's!

I apologise if you think I was big noting myself. Hopefully your other supporters will understand this correction and not think me a buffoon. If I were to add anything for those non/newbies out there it would only be: Sails are like wings on a plane. The greater the curvature the more lift or power they create. However, the greater the curve the limit to speed drops. The thinner the wing/sail the faster its top end performance - like a fighter jet. Big curvy sail are like a big V8 engine - good for punching through big swells and waves. Smaller flatter sail give greater performance upwind and for reaching at greater speed. Other than that, which one you choose to use is really a personal choice based on windspeed and conditions.

I have a code 00.. smaller...easier to use and furl. We can carry it very high. Powers up quickly and is a great sail...

How deep are your pockets? I would get a the code zero. We have a self tacking jib, a code 1 and an asymmetric spinni on our Outremer. A code zero would be a very useful addition for those close reaching light wind days where the jib is just too underpowered. The code zero does not have to be very heavy if it's a string sail laminate.

I also have outremer and have a code 55 that’s a small code 0 and use a lot for pointing as close to the wind as the jib. Then asymmetric and tradewind for downwind
More chain is needed
Thanks Dominik. We only use 3-1 in good hold (mud) in fine weather or limited space but use 5-1 with any wind on the forecast... More ins strong winds too - have 100m of chain for when we need it but is it ia pain to pull up if you don't need it...
Yes a lighter sail is better but issue with a heavier sail like the code zero is that the materials are stronger and when the wind pick up, you have less chances of blowing it.
Yes good point and I presume the key will be to furl it in as soon as the limits of its wind tolerance are close. With the cables foully that should be easy - we will see!
Theoretically the FFR sounds logical…. The question is if theory and praxis match up. This will see the future and practical tests…
Fortunately they have been used in the round the world races with great effect and endurance so that is a good sign!
Does the FFR tear easier? Do you think backwinding might be a problem?
Hi TOny. It is is thinner material so would be easier to tear than a Code 0 and car would be needed when pulling it in. I don;t think that back winding would be any more likely that any other upwind sail and as a cruiser we would be sailing it "softly"...

Howzit guys What about a para sail there are 2 types available one will handle bigger wind speeds than the other and handle from 60 degrees up.
Hi Glyn. Yes we do have an Oxley parasail already for the winds up to 15-20 knots (big sail area) but we would not want to fly a spinnaker in stronger winds as we are not racing and don;t want the struggle, stress and risk of that scenario. In the stronger winds we will have the main reefed and the jib or stay sail in 25+knots... I have been racing monos in the past and do not need that excitement and adrenaline any more - easy and comfortable is our aim, along with "good" speeds - 10-12 knots or more in flat seas perhaps...
How is this different from North Helix?
I do not know that sail so can't answer your question. Does the North Helix use dyneema to avoid the need for the front edge cable?
