The Spray wasn't exactly rigged with any self steering gear. It was the 1890s. Such things hadn't been invented yet. That the boat was able to be set on a course, the tiller lashed and she'd just go in a straight line is more a testament to the design of the boat than anything else. A lot of traditional wooden boats, especially ones who have a direct design lineage to working boats from the 19th century will do that. A couple modern examples viewable on RUclips are the traditional chine hull boat, Rediviva on the Salt & Tar channel and the Atkin designed boat, Arabella on the Acorn To Arabella channel will self steer in the right conditions without modern gear engaged. I suspect that my Tahiti Ketch will also do this.

Magic! The self steering was just one of so many challenges both big and small that needed to be met in order to get to this moment … the big leap. Congratulations … well done. ⛵️🇨🇦⚓️🙂 PS: These last two videos have had a contemplative feel and rightly so. Time to crack on and live that adventure. The videos are brilliant but don’t forget to capture some good quality still images that you’ll need for the book!

Great self steering story. Thanks for sharing. In one scene, you have your handheld VHF radio resting above your hatch. Made me nervous to think it could just slide off into the water. I was sailing a 26' boat off the coast of Georgia (US) once. I had put a cell phone in the kangaroo pouch of my sweat shirt and I told myself "Now you can't fix anything as that phone will likely slip out if you start bending over, etc..." Well, something was jammed at the base of my mast and I got down on my belly to fix it. My phone slipped out and bounced overboard. I still have the image in my mind of it falling down through the water. Darn.
I'm in the process of converting a head in my 44' sailboat to a pantry/laundry room. The shelves are in my garage with the stain drying... I'm trying to decide if I should glue the fiddles on with regular wood glue or epoxy... I'll probably try the epoxy but it's harder to work with.

I enjoyed the lengthy anecdote about your trials and tribulations with the Mk III self-steering, but I'm curious to know what the solution turned out to be.
You said you set it up when you reached the bay, and it finally started working! You then said you began to truly understand trim-tab self-steering. However, you didn't say what you may have done differently this time to make it work, or what it was about it that you'd begun to truly understand. Apparently, it wasn't working properly, then it was! Still wondering . . .
This was a very enjoyable episode, particularly the segments where you were just sailing. No voice-over or background music, just the sounds of sailing. Fantastic.

@ahmadmuhaimin2852 The boat is greatly changed and improved from the original plans so we are reworking them and will be putting them out later this year.

It's very easy to reef by a solo sailor. It's also very easy to build

Excellent video Alan and fair winds for the crossing. Are you going to share your learning with the MK3 with those who purchased the plans - I do know that Tony on SV Tapatya is have ‘setting to work’ issues now he is underway?
