Hikari, the Warrior - Octopath Traveler 2 [Erhu and Violin Cover]

- A few months ago, I covered the final battle version of this theme, but I wanted to do the initial one as well in order to finish a version of each traveler's "basic" theme. Since it already uses the erhu, my usual substitution of the flute textures for erhu wasn't going to be effective this time in the peaceful interlude.
Fortunately, a friend gifted me an ocarina! So I learned to play ocarina, of course. It is a very forgiving instrument as far as fingerings go, as long as you have the ear to handle how much breath is moving into the instrument to fine tune the pitch. I think my ocarina is only supposed to play down to an F6, but I was able to blow very slowly with all the holes covered and get the E which was required as the lowest note of the phrase. These things are SOOOO loud, I can't practice it at all without earplugs in, but it was a nice texture to complement the erhu and violins.
I also wanted to add a tremolo-strummed instrument to mimic what I thought was probably a shamisen in the original recording, and since I don't have a shamisen yet, I brought out the mandolin for that and I think it worked really nicely to fill that space.
I'm really happy with how this one turned out, but I'll admit when I finally got around to doing the video edit I didn't realize how many parts I had included in here, and I wanted to keep a bit of symmetry in my layout so I didn't include a couple parts in the biggest mosaic arrays.

Thank you so much! I'm coming up on two years playing it now in March, and it's definitely been a journey to get to a place where I feel confident and competent with it, but I think I'm starting to finally control it better!

Yay!! I'm so glad extending it worked out! I wanted to spend a little more time building back up to the finale in the peaceful repose, 8 bars didn't seem like enough time to bring it back and build up again, so I doubled it :) I hope when it's released on Xbox this year more people get to play this game!
Yayyyy Ocarina!! I got one for my birthday but didn't realize breath controlled the pitch, not being a wind instrument person, so I just got mad at how "out of tune" it was 😅
It is hard!! I think that I have a little advantage with it since I'm used to constantly tuning my fingers on a fretless instrument, so don't beat yourself up. It's just not something that you have needed to practice at ALL for your instrument!

I'm amazed every time I see you play a new instrument in one of your videos! I'm really inspired by how you master them and incorporate them into your arrangements. The ocarina sounds lovely here. The erhu is really singing throughout - I felt the emotion deep in my bones. Gorgeous performances as always!

Hikari needed to get back to his kingdom to free his people from the usurper, so there's definitely some urgency in his story! Some of that probably came through in my interpretation. :)

SOMEHOW they mostly fit in the dining room that I took over for my studio. Wall hooks are amazing for keeping things in their own places. I'm glad you liked it!!

Awww! Thank you! I am so glad that I started learning to play it, because it's been so much fun to add to my arrangements. It seems like it's relatively uncommon in the west, but it works so well as a contrast to the traditional western string instruments. 💜

Haha I'm trying to finish up the character themes so that I can have them all done before the anniversary. I'm sure I'll do some oot at some point ;) but I don't have the cosplay started yet! I'll have to get on that
