Need to add some small foldable seats on top off the tool boxes. Possibly a seat belt also. Great work.
Yeah riding on the toolboxes without any seat or seatbelt is just asking for an accident. Couple jump seats would be sweet. I'd still be a little nervous of those big tires throwing a rock.
I don't think that Matt planned the heavy wrecker to be a crew vehicle (he also said that in the building serie): just the driver seat and one single passenger seat.
His idea was to go with 3 vehicles when on a rescue, the Heavy Wrecker and the Banana or the Morrvair.
Don't get me wrong, is a cool idea to put a couple of seats on top of the toolboxes, but I think isn't ment to do that
right from the beginning I thought that it NEEDS to be a crew cab
@@lowrangemaniac5326 So True he did not plan to have passengers just a co driver , Also if I remember he thought that a crew cab would be to long and hard to see out of . They will figure out a good answer. Happy trails
@@henrycarlson7514 exactly my friend
09:26 " If it's not blinking, it's not working!" Words of wisdom, young man, words of wisdom. 🤣After working in IT for over 20 years, it doesn't get more acccurate than that! 🤣
Wait, isn’t Matt a customer? Another great video, I find fabrication so very interesting! Has anyone noticed Chad and team always end up with the most technical projects, these guys make it look easy but being a engineer myself it’s anything but easy. Smart folks with a great can do mindset
Yes they are a awesome team. 🇺🇸
It may be partially due to electrical skillsets, acumen, and tools. Most mechanics won't take apart a Transmission for that reason.
Chad seems to have more experience with taking a new piece of wire or a harness and running it to a new pin in a new connector. Many fabricators just splice into existing harnesses to add bits without trimming out the unnecessary bits.
Thanks for making
Add a flip down jump seat to the console!!
Great video and great job with the wrecker and God bless from GA and stay safe
Nice progress on the WLORW cockpit controls, Chad's Fab crew!
Need some rear jump seats like the Subaru Brat had.
Do you think if you attached one or more hydraulic cylinders to that boom and plumbed the two side of each the cylinder together with a valve and speed regulator in between that it could be used as a safety just in case the winch cable breaks? Whenever the winch turns on it would also open the valve allowing fluid to move from one side of the piston to the other. If the cable breaks while the winch is on the speed controller would allow for a slower drop and time to stop the winch. If it breaks while the winch is off, the cylinder would already be hydraulic locked. This is a question as I’m not a hydraulics guy, just another sparky 😉.
You could totally do that and it would work great as a safety if a cable broke.
May I make a suggestion from an old MOTOROLA radio and POLICE DEPARTMENT vehicle builder? This was a trick taught to me about 60 years ago. Instead of a regular fish tape either buy or go to the junk yard and find a VW buss and pull the spedo cable out of it. The reasons we used them (and I still do to this day and have the one from 50 years ago) is that a regular tape is to stiff as you pointed out BUT a spedo cable is meant to flex, bend and spin. Because of the flexibility of it you can slide it 99% of places and then just tape off your wires and pull from either direction. Sound simple but until you get one you will knot know how hard you have been working. And believe me the FBI and DOJ want as few views of wires as possible when they are doing undercover work. I have even been known to put toggles under the dash in hidden locations so they can dim or shot off headlights or tail light to make them look like a regular car with a burned out bulb. Also rebuild the face of a factory radio to hide mics in or even cameras that can be activates with an old floor dimmer switch. I Sacrament City school busses and BRINKS we installed the old dimmer switches (after removing the switch part that clicks) that were used to activate silent alarms at base to allow base to call for assistance because the radios also had GPS in them. Believe me you really have to work your butt off and use a fish tape to hide wires so even the operator does not know where they are. The only thing they are aware of is if there is a problem to step on a dimmer switch on the floor. Hope this helps an old pro like you guys. Just some of the tricks we use.
WOW! You probably have some interesting stories and memories of those builds, beyond what you just shared.
@@chadsfab I hope the info I shard with you might give you some future ideas and yes you are right but in the end they were all fun to see how they worked
@@davidvincent1093 I did. Thank you!!
good stuff
I don’t understand why there’s no roll cage ?
No room
The secret to running wire through tubes. It uses a string tied to a plastic bag. Then use a shop vacuum to suck it out where you want to. Works pretty well. Most electricians use it. God bless
It’s amazing how much more work the wrecker needed. Quality work by great team makes this a Pleasure to watch
It's an incredibly custom vehicle. When almost every aspect of it is built or tweaked from scratch, it's little wonder things have to be re-tweaked to work.
The first 90% of work only takes 10% of the time and the last 10% of work to actually make it look nice an Finnish it off takes 90% of the build time
It's amazing to see the amount of extra attention to every detail that Chad and crew does. No shortcuts here. VERY Professional!! Kudos to all.
God Bless you and your family.
I like your last name 😊
Matt built the basics, but Chad and crew are making it all shine! Matt needed you help for the last 10%.
He would have gotten it done, but it's always nice when you can pass the torch for a bit 😁
@@chadsfab True , Some day . In my opinion having you and you're crew is the Better answer . Happy Wiring , and Thank You for a Fine Site
Some day is right! Probably years down the road after he broke wiring and switches multiple times...
Matt's right hand man Trevor left, so he doesn't have an wiring expert in house.
@BigBlueMotors whatever happened to Trevor? I noticed we weren't seeing him much anymore..
I'm new to your channel. Saw you through Matt's, but am drawn to your thoughtful, gentle, experienced wisdom. Can you surprise Matt with a jump seat or two. Awesome work
I think when these guys are mad you would never know with there calm demeaner .
@@davestevens4263 The camera has an off button you know. Everyone from time to time has a hissy fit. I know that I sure do! LOL
Chad, your team does a great job and I enjoy watching all of you. Might I suggest a center jump seat of sorts and two removable seats with beats on the back tool boxes. They are already using these areas and they should be made safe.
with seat belts too
Make sure you put a place for a victory pie on that center console.I think that would be an awesome touch
Don't forget cup holders too!
Just encase that victory pie in some resin.
What an awesome crew and not one of them is afraid to work they’re good people that’s what happens when you get good parents can you teach your children right from wrong enjoy so much watching you guys work enjoy this channel God bless you all💯👏👍🇺🇸
As we have seen on occasion, a third smaller person, such as Lizzy, has ridden in the center. A lowering of the rear section and narrowing to allow foot room would accommodate a jump seat. I think this would be helpful.
Matt has been seen there too, being the gentleman he is ,and let's Jamie drive ,a rocking chair on the boom might be next ,the Utah Hillbillies (Morrbility solutions)
Bench seat will fit three.
In Matt's video on building his derby car, he talked about how he comes up with ideas for the build. He sits for hours looking at the car, and then he sits some more and forms a plan on his head. After sitting for hours looking at the Wrecker, he came up with the plan, "I'll send it to Chad and let him finish it."
It's only practical to capitalize on your strengths and realize weaknesses. If I had a friend like Chad, he would absolutely be getting paid to wire a rig, rather than me go out and buy thousands of dollars of equipment and supplies and take triple the time to do a lesser quality job.
Using the flexible core of a speedometer cable works great to snake wire. When it got stuck we hooked it to a drill and turned it slowly to get through.
@Cole Martin
How fast were you going?❤️🇷🇴
Or, go to Harbor Freight and pick up a fiberglass wire running kit or a fish tape reel.
Chad, I’m very good at fishing wires in difficult places, and the approach I’d use to get around that filler pipe is to take a few inches of small metal chain tied to a masons line and drop that down. The weight of the chain will pull the nylon cord around the obstruction most of the time.
Chad, family and team, you guess do amazing design and work!! I’m glad to be part of your channel. I’ve used a para cord and a shop vac to run wiring in tubing! Tape a little bit of plastic bag to the end and put it in the one hole. Than use the shop vac to suck the para cord though the other hole!! Where I learned it from was an electrical contractor on a job site, running wires through underground conduit!! Again thank for the great video content
Chads words of wisdom....gotta love this guy.😇
Where do all the top Fabricators go to have their creations “work?” Chad’s Fab.
Chad your Shop is great for Fabrication electrical and layout
Is Awesome 👌

Love your wisdom mate & the fact the guys share it too! Great work! 👍
Well Sparky I see you're back to making juice got to have spark to make juice. And then a great believer in back in time.
Every here for my birthday I go back 10 years. Believe me people don't believe my age. This is what I go back when you stand here's. Sometimes they believe I'm 57 or 60. Nope. Special not tell me how many grandkids I have. And great-grandkids.
Send I really don't believe that I'm that old.
Yes I do a lot of step-backs.
Thank you all I learned a lot by watching. And when you step back remember remember what was in front of you.👍🏽🤟🏽🤙🏾🤘🏾🤚🏽🙏🏽🙋🏽♂️😱😊😎💖
Hey Dusty ........ What about the "cup holders" in the console? 🥤🥤 A fold down "Buddy Seat" maybe?
Dusty, you should mount a seat on top of each of the toolboxes for extra passengers. 😊
I enjoy watching and listening to Korbin as much as anyone! Keep up your cameos, young mister Carter!
Chad, Dusty, Tyson and his wife and team are miracle workers and doing a great job getting Matt's wrecker fixed up and functional.
The last 10% of visual job can easy take 25% of total time. Painful to watch the guy trying to red-hot the tubing with miniature torch.
You have one heck of a good crew . 👏. Enjoyed it
Bikers always want wires and cables hidden inside handlebars and frame rails. Fishing them through small diameter tubes with tight bends is not easy. When I had my motorcycle shop we'd tie a string to a cotton ball or pompom. Then use a blow gun to push it through. Use the string as a fish.
A piece of plastic grocery bag tied to a string and a shop vacuum will pretty much suck the string through any conduit. Cool way to fish wire.
Looking Good
On the new console you built sometimes Matt has 3 people in the vehicle is there a way you put a cushion on the back end of that and also put some foot pags up high so somebody's feet can be ride nonsense so you're kind of like riding the horse with a seat belt
I like to think that mentioning that you have a bender and then bending that square tube with a torch and a vice is a love letter to Tom Tom :)
Those tail-lights just look so right. Interesting how profounding satisfying a small detail can be. And it's emblematic of so much of your work even when it's hidden, as it mostly is.
Love this channel.
Thank you!!
Very cool to see how you guys bring Matt’s monster idea into a functioning piece of art.
It's cool to see Stacie and the rest of the family in the garage. BTW, Chad you look way better without the face fuzz. LOL
Good progress on the wrecker ! Romax for the wiring Win . Thanks for sharing . Love your Videos !
Thank you for watching and supporting!!
They should mount seats on top of the tool boxes for Lizzie to ride on
Every inch of this is difficult. I've done some fabrication and all of this is anything but easy.
Chad is the nicest guy! And very talented 👏 A regular fountain of knowledge . He engenders trust with his mannerisms.
You always do A#1 quality work! Looking great and the progress is so much fun to watch.
1:21 - Cab work looks as challenging as any part of this build. (So many components to install in a small space).
morr sent me … so happy to be here so far …👀😁
Chad's work is like Swiss watchmaking for T-Rex heavy wrecker
You guys should PLEASE show off your work at the Freedom Festival Parade in Provo this July. We want to see the wrecker drive down center street in person flying huge American flags. It would be awesome!
You should reach out to Matt directly about that 😉
Those guages are just amazing. Most amazing "NOT A SINGLE CLAW HAMMER WAS USED IN THIS VIDEO" ROFLMAO. Thanks for great video guys.
😂🤣😂
I'm thinking somebackgroud 80s hairband music, RATT, LAYIT DOWN would match up great with this segment,
You should check with Mattman about removable fenders that clip on and move with each wheel independently, you guys would be the ones to make it work sensibility
Good work guys and gals 😊😊😊
Hey Buddy. Just a quick tip for the Torch. Have you ever tried Mapp Gas ? It's a mixture of methylacetylene, propadiene and propane. MAPP (5300*F) and Propane (3600*F). Little more expensive but it also takes less time to heat and hotter :) Cheers
Oeh suggestion; put the same rear (brake) lights on the rollbar aswell!
So the towed car can see them aswell as others from a side angle.
Plus it would be useful if one eventually breaks
( 4:37 )
Don't forget CUP HOLDERS lol.... I like to use the swinging mount marine ones in my off road rigs... hahaha
As I read my own comment, I realize that many people watch these videos and ask "Why didn't they do it this way instead?" I'm wondering how often Chad says this himself. We don't understand the full context or criteria, so the question could be out of curiosity without inferring that the comment is from someone who thinks he knows better.
On a recent recovery, Matt was sitting in the middle and it would be cool if they could incorporate some kind of jump seat to the top of the center console. Nothing more than a Stadium seat or somewhere for Peanut to chill.
The evolution of design was interesting.
At 20:42 it was stated that the top would be removable and the sides could come out individually.
At 20:47 the two sides were welded together.
At 23:07 the initial frame is shortened to allow removal as a unit.
When they disassembled it, I noticed something that I might have done differently. To make the console easier to remove, it may have been better if the shifters were mounted to a plate that could be unbolted, then they could drop down together as the console was removed without fishing the handles around the metal bracing.
I quite often reassess along the way 🤣 I think we all have to. Best way to get what we're designing to be what we want it to be.
24:56 ... 1940's MB Army Jeeps used the hydraulic break light actuator... so they gotta be good! :)
It's good to see the final finishing touches being put on the Big Wrecker! (Hint) Chad, perhaps you can get some 'inspiration' from seeing and going over the Big Wrecker as you contemplate your own wrecker build. Now I'm not suggesting you borrow any of Matt's ideas or anything like that!
Everything is looking great thanks for sharing 👍😀
Chad, just a thought. For the console, you should think of putting in a couple of cup holders, mobile phone holder with charger point. At the rear of the console you could easily make a little holder just above the transmission cables to put bits and bobs. THere is never enough space to put stuff. Great job on the wiring and fabrication. Greetings from the UK.
❤ Team Chad's Fab! 👍😎✊
msg for Matt.. I don't recall Dusty taking The Wrecker offroad 🤔
Wire coat hangers! That was the solution my mechanic Grandpa often used, even used them for welding and brazing. Still have some of his home brew tool he brazed together. You just can't find good wire coat hangers anymore.
Wood insulators on vise jaws would stop vise from robbing heat from tubing during heat process...
Oh a console? Um can you mount two seats on the back then with a 5 point harness. Never enough seats for Matt. They're already driving with 3 across inside, the console will mess with that.
Impossibler. What a great word! Don't know why I never thought of it. I'm from Arkansas and never heard that one! 🤣
👍🏽🇺🇸👍🏽 you all do an excellent job..
How wide is the cab ? Largest wrecker. Is it wide enough to have a foldable jump seat to ride on center console?
Wide enough for two seats and console 😁 But it is smaller than a Ranger or S10 cab
Have u watched them use this thing? They also need a crew cab.
Yes, yes they do. Maybe that'll be their next build.
COSTA RICA...saludos...nice work.
Rear lights on the boom would also be a safe location ?
And some market lights on the boom with a work light or two at the end looking down ?
So much wiring going on with this build ,not something that one would have to fault find on the trail , imagine that 😮
Seeing that passenger room is limited, any plans to build rumble seats on the rear of the cab (as seen on recoveries of late ( Lizzy seats)
Any room for drink holders in the center console,a hidden chiller box , wouldn't that be cool ?
You certainly have the dedicated team 😊😊
wow, i had no idea the amount of work going into wiring harness. Dang! Came here from Matt's channel, this is impressive, meticulous work.
The real shop manager was not in this video much. That baby of yours going to be great in the shop in another 10 years.
So the wrecker has license plates. How does Utah deal with homebuilt vehicles like that? did you have the original title to the old Air Force truck? Or just a title and they run it thru as a new plate? I would be interested in a video showing the steps for a plate that can drive on the roads. Maricopa county Arizona makes it very difficult moving thru the gauntlet to getting a license plate.
Use a piece of string with the wires tied/taped to it, and a shop vac to suck the string through, then pull the wires through the tubing. That's how I run wires through motorcycle frames and handle bars.
Not sure if it would work in your application but I've had good luck fishing with a vacuum and some light craft ribbon. Vacuum it right on through there
For a fishing situation like that might i recommend a pull chain from a fixture attached to a small string. If the upper and lower holes are somewhat inline.Takes a bit of practice but works pretty well.
As an electrician i'd sometimes run into spots where romex couldn't fish. One of my favorite tricks was using some welding wire, its stiff enough to take and hold a bend but thin and springy enough to work through tight spaces. Another great tool for those gravity fishing spots is a bead chain.
Hey guys while you have the off-road wrecker. Can you add some of those Garbage Truck steps and Hold handles and maybe a D ring for a harness to attach on each side of the off road wrecker for someone to stand and sling a camera or ride along? Much love guys ❤❤
A great trick when running wiring thru stuff like that... Use an old speedometer cable (just the center cable) attached to a drill. It spinning will shoot it right past all kinds of junk, and helps feed it at the same time.
Enjoy watching this fabrication. May want to look into Duez fasteners for attaching the sheetmetal panels or riv nuts.
The wrecker is shaping up well. Good Job. Convince your friends to wear their seat belts please.
How about adding , rear video screen, so Matt can actually see position of the rear. Steering. Axles?
Fishing wires threw any space, take a shopvac and suck some string threw the whole tube and tie the wires to the string and pull it threw. Thats actually an old plumbers trick.
When I need to get wire down a wall with insulation, I use a short piece Jack Chain ⛓️and let it rattle down the hole. Hello from the high desert of Phelan California. Lenny 👋
When you get overwhelmed with DETAILS, just call CHADS FAB 👌
a piece of romex works well, and believe it or not, old wire coat hangers untwisted at the hook and straightened work excellently for pulling wire, i have an old aluminum one and an old steel one in my 4x4 for just that purpose when helping someone wire a sterio or some obscure thing that is in a wierd spot, the steel one works well for pushing wire through a firewall, and the aluminum works well for pulling wire through a chassis, the hard part is literally finding the wire coat hangers though, pretty cool to see you guys working and see the process, lots of ingenuity and lots of hard work
Chad you and the boys oh yeah and Stacie are super awesome I love your style.
BTW, he does look like Trevor 😂🤣
Maybe wires at the end of the boom for camera?
To allow the driver to see if he is getting close to having the boom hit the towed vehicle.
Those cameras are relatively cheap - so are tablets to have in the cab.
With rock crawling would any cameras be helpful if you were to go through tricky areas without a spotter?
It's also True that you need to 'take it back' when you have been 'too forward' in some circumstances!!!
another way I have pulled wires hook a shop vac up and feed string in the one end might need a bit of rag tied too the string too help the vac pull it .. stiff wire worked great ,, I have done lots of weird pulls in house wiring .. another great video ,, nice work with the pins ..I would have dropped a few more then 1 ..
Imagine a super loud alarm siren hidden in the dash that goes off when the gas gauge hits 1/4 tank😂😂😂😂😂😂
a fish tape with a little bit of string or twine on the end 6"-12" that you can back fish and hook is a trick i use some times. A light sting or twine with a little piece of plastic bag and a good shop vac to suck it through also works.
Lesson in sucking eggs - don't forget a quick release panel / hatch to allow Matt to vacuum dust and sand out of the console void.
The comradery that your family has when working together is amazing. I've worked in hvac trade my whole life , so I've been on many job sights that had family businesses working on them . I've seen some come to the point of fist fighting over some of the dumbest things, but they would come back the next day best of friends again . The person that usually started things was the one you could tell that they didn't love what they did ,and I guess that's why your family works so well together. you all have the same passion ,some may be better skilled at certain things than others but everyone can work to that common goal.
The beaded pull chain for old style light fixtures works great as a fish tape. Gravity does all the work.
Your patience are incredible to wire this rigs ! The fab work is a Art
Center console looks great. Matt will be stoked!!
