If you’re gonna go all in and make a hobby a job you gotta be really gifted at it or obsessed with it. So like Enjoying isn’t enough. Anyways great advice by Juji.

Step 6 is definitely the most important one. The scariest thing with letting go of your day job is that secured income, crunching the numbers and having a solid understanding of how things are going is key for having that confidence in yourself and your vision. Still haven't done it myself but I already do this and feel good knowing that if I ever wanted to (I really enjoy my day job haha) I can walk away and still keep myself covered.

Awesome video Juji. I have a day job and 2 businesses on the side. I may hit step 6 at some point, we’ll see. But all your advice, I think is dead on and parallels my experience. Unfortunately most of the entrepreneurial advice out there on the web and in books is like a picture of an instagram model. Taken in favorable light, using a filter, and totally photoshopped. I would add that networking with other business owners in my field (biotech) helped way more than anything else in getting where I am today.

@@jamescanjuggle I just told my student to create their new weekly schedule. This was to help them to work on content and ways to earn when not passively generating clients.
It’s something I didn’t consider when I went “full time” as an entrepreneur: You’re responsible for EVERYTHING!
      -sleep schedule
      -work schedule
      -what work to do
      -putting out fires
      -customer service
      -mistakes

      -branching business out
      -your mental health
      -your physical health
      -your emotional health
      -etc
That said, I’m happy to be living out a childhood dream even when, as Juji says, I don’t always enjoy it.
That’s why, at the end of the day, I won’t consult or mentor anyone unless I know that they’re as passionately dedicated about turning their dream into a career as I was.

This is an amazing video. I'm glad you made it, the world will benefit from your wisdom. You probably don't know me but I followed a near identical path.
I remember when I quit my day job my boss told me, "You're going to rise to a higher level than any of us." (my IT department)
I didn't see what he did. However, it turned out to be a really good decision. Like you, I worked really hard and had to learn to manage myself without somebody managing me. BTW, as a fellow content creator, great video, pacing, speaking, lighting, and audio. Just terrific.
Finally, you might consider hiring an editor. I get it, editing is a little like masturbation and only you really know how to do it perfectly. Still, you might be surprised. There are people out there that eat editing for lunch and will be worth the investment. That time savings will free you up for something else or just bring you happiness.
Edit: Your description says you have an editor so the part about editing last night leaves me a bit confused. The rest of my comment stands. :)

    • @jujimufu
      @jujimufu  2 года назад +10

Hi Woody! How's it going!? And thank you for the compliment on the filming and editing, means a lot coming from a fellow creator! I do have an editior, Brian, he edits +90% of everything here. There are still some things I edit myself though, because I have to dig out and find the archival footage only I have, or there are certain edit styles I cannot communicate to him for certain sequences (I just have to play with it for a bit, kind of like sketching something). But I really do appreciate you taking the time to stop by and make this comment, it's important for people to understand their relationship with work and play better imo, even if they don't go on to becoming self employed, there is a lot of room for empowerment that people leave untapped in their own lives. :-)

How could he just let me play video games in my bedroom for years on end and not feel worried that I wasn't doing more? If I was a parent I might be concerned. But it was really the best thing he could've done to raise me, was just to give me that freedom to do nothing, but support me if I wanted to do something. Amazing parenting in retrospect.

In my 20-30s, I'd consistently 70+ hours a week because I thought I had to and I'd feel like a horrible, lazy person if I didn't, and I assumed that I couldn't make ends meet or ever be happy if I didn't. In the long run, all that really happened is that I ran myself into the ground and my health hit rock bottom because work was all I focused on, and it didn't really put me ahead financially anyway. All that I achieved was making life much harder for myself than it needed to be. Now in my early 40s I'm left to clean up the mess I made of myself over the last 20 years, which isn't easy. What I learned is that happiness is a state of mind, and it's one that you can't necessarily just work yourself into. You have to find a healthy equilibrium and then you will find happiness along the way to a life that you actually want to live.

This really strikes a cord with me right now. I've just quit my job to take a mental break to figure out the direction I want to go. Fortunately, I'd been frugal and busted my a$$ for many years to save enough money to safely bow out for a spell to do just what I'm doing. My fiance finished Grad school with her PhD and has a good job. I really CAN afford the decision 100%,,,, but my deeply ingrained work ethic has me momentarily flustered with my daily schedule now. I'm in the honeymoon phase of relaxing my mind to rewire it to accept this very fortunate ability to do what I'm doing, but I'm also fearful and beginning to experience some of the things you talk about in this video. It's only been a month and I've bounced to each extreme mentally and physically 🤣. A natural effect of new found freedom.

Thanks! It's funny that I made that graph in August and through January, and it's pretty much happened exactly as I had graphed it. And not even because I was intentionally following it. I kinda, in a roundabout way, predicted my own future, which was useful in its own right. I have learned a lot of different stuff in my own time and through formal education, and I often get excited about that learning process. A good example is playing and writing music. I used to have a really good flow and consistent structure to writing as I was learning, but as I've gotten into the working world to make ends meet, the passion and time to devote isn't quite the same, so I keep getting down on myself thinking I suddenly don't have the skillset anymore. This video comes at an important time for me. In 2020, I had a bit of an existential crisis - I’m sure others did too. It was particularly surrounding my career path. I work as a federal employee in the museum industry. For the past few years, I haven’t felt motivated or inspired with my work. So, I ended up getting my personal training certification during quarantine because of my passion for fitness and bringing that joy to others. The one thing holding me back were my student loans. But, just recently I got notification that the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program I had been working towards finally forgave them - I’m free of that debt and have a new lease on life. At the end of last years, I got a part-time coaching job and realized it truly was something I wanted to pursue (and I already have an interview scheduled for a full-time training position at the gym I personally work out at), so I’m sowing the seeds to quit my day job soon. Thank you for this video and sharing your experience and insight.

Juji's "1 Life Changing Lesson" vid from a few weeks back helped me reach the conclusions he talked about at 13:30. I've felt my passion for my work and my education have been slipping for the last three months. I've been wanting to call out more, I've been postponing and procrastinating things, and I've been struggling to come up with any motivation for training. Juji helped me take a step back and reflect on why I'm feeling this way.
I've been dieting for 5 months, working down from a bulking and cutting cycle between 180-195 for the last two years, finally leaning down to 10%! Huge progress, only a few weeks left, and I will be lean. I didn't think for a moment how this could impact everything else going on in life, but it absolutely has. You HAVE to take a step back and inventory as things change.
I'm not lacking passion or interest, I'm just lacking energy. That revelation has helped me to actually enjoy work and school and everything more. I wasn't depressed, I was overwhelmed by the amount of things I took on while 194 and in a caloric surplus. It's not that I'm not enjoying things, but I am gonna have to grit down and work through it sometimes. Thanks Juji!

It's ok if you don't know what you want to do "with your life" but just try things, and get good at some things right now and be kind to people. To give you a little insight, I didn't know what I wanted to do either when I graduated highschool, I just knew I wanted to work out and diet and make videos and stuff. So I went on a "biology and chemistry" plan for college, because that could lead to exercise physiology or something? So I just kinda went through the motions. By the time I got to year 3 I just decided to go full biology and chemistry (go with the flow) but I just did it because I didn't know what I wanted to do for a job. I just figured i'd finish college first. Then I just got a job in biotech when I graduated and kept training and dieting and doing all that stuff on the side. At first my job got in the way of those things, but I figured out ways to make my job easier so I could be less stressed. Then I negotiated work hours and did other things to make the job more palatable for me. And that's the same job I kept for 7 years before I finally quit and did what I'm doing now. So sometimes it's not the job that's the problem, sometimes it's your job to make that job easy, and then it's an ok job to have! Anyway, right now, just strive to get good at things and be kind to people, goes a long way.

This is such great, honest advice, way different than you read or see from a lot of business or entrepreneur "gurus". I'm currently working a 9-5 job while also trying to grow my own training business, and though the goal is to quit my day job, it feels scary sometimes! But that's ok! Just gotta take the time to build a good foundation and be self-sustainable before committing to that decision, while also realizing when staying at your day job is hurting your potential to grow the thing you really like to do. Thanks for putting what a lot of people are feeling into a video!

    • @jujimufu
      @jujimufu  2 года назад +2

You bring up a tricky thing I didn't cover in the video. "When it comes into your head that staying at your day job is hurting your potential to grow the thing you really like to do." the thing is you can have this thought even if you like your day job, like I did, and it can unsettle you and create doubt and make you feel like you're getting left behind or not progressing fast enough. Thing is, those thoughts and feelings don't help you, motivate you, or foster focus: instead, they just create panic. Anyway, please continue building that foundation as you are and don't feel rushed... You're probably working as fast and as hard as you can to make that transition, just be nice to yourself and take 1 step at a time day by day, and to seize opportunities when they arise to get a little extra done when you have bonus energy!

    • @beerbikesbarbells

@@jujimufu That's definitely something I struggle with sometimes, the feeling that you're not growing as fast you've decided you should be in your head. Thanks for the kind words Juji, it's great to see someone succeed who's gone through all the same doubts and feelings that many of us experience!

I'm partially retired myself. I built my business to the point where I work about 20 hours a week mostly by choice. My current plan is to sell in just over 6 years (at 40) and fully retire so that I can open a non-profit STEM and trade (animal husbandry, welding, plumbing, electric, etc...) education center.
I am not putting it off for the sake of my day job, it's just that - for me - selling my company will give me the insane amount of investment capital that I want to help make my NFP as successful as possible in terms of providing the services promised. I just feel like 6 more years of me being at the helm of my company will be best to continue growing the value.
I love what I currently do, but when it's about profit there is still stress. When I start my NFP I can just sit back and let it run and never worry about it affecting my own net worth. That means I can do things like just feck off and go travel to Australia with my wife for 4 months if we want to, or we can go travel the world and attend all the major gymnastics competitions (her passion).
