I've got just a tiny set up in my basement, basically just a deadlift platform and half rack, and I feel so much love towards it. Hearing Juji's comments on his previous gyms and how he still loved them even if they weren't ideal just makes me feel warm inside

Juji, you probably hear this every day, but your progress has been an inspiration. I remember seeing the workouts in the apt living room to the "I quit my day job" video to the gym fort and collabs, and so on and so on. Now you have a world-class facility and are a fitness, dare I say, celebrity?
Your physique/athletic progress has been motivational as well you always staying true to yourself. I hope you don't take this the wrong way but I didn't exactly expect a buff dude doing dead lifts in a cul de sac wearing jeans and no shirt to rise to the heights you've accomplished. You let kids out there know that if they're passionate about what they love and what they do, they can be successful. And not just be successful, but do it THEIR way, letting their individuality shine through, even if it's unorthodox or it hasn't been done that way in the past.
    Much love brother.

Homeschooling mom here!!! My kids being home all the time meant a home gym for me. Started out with doing videos on YT, got a bench, barbell & plates. I watched a lot of YT on how to use barbell and plates . 👍🏼. Got a cheap rack, got another rack and then slowly started building out. I love my home gym, no lines, no sweat from other people on my equipment, I can listen to the music I want to listen to; it’s great! And my kids are upstairs I can hear them and yell at them to cut it out if I need to!!

It's true, I love watching these incredible gym tours and home builds, they always inspire me. I bought a couple sets of adjustable dumbbells and keep them next to my bed. I work out in a narrow space in my bedroom, strict rep in a doorframe and keep a little X-frame cycle in front of the TV.
My next purchases are a pull-up/dip station and sissy squat for my spare bedroom. Ultimately, I want a universal with a big weight stack in my basement.
Juji, you literally were the reason I got into working out, quit alcohol, face agoraphobia and kept inspiring me to train at home through this pandemic. I changed jobs and improved my life because of you, on top of finding my passion. From the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Currently broke as hell. Rent is a struggle. Groceries are a struggle. I have one resistance band and a set of light dumbbells I swiped from my landlord's storage. My flooring is the mat I use under my computer chair, which I move around for each exercise. My bench is two couch cushions on the ground. I made a pullup bar out of a 2x4. I started my home gym in april 2020 pretty early on in the pandemic when i started watching all these home gym youtubers and realized its just that simple to get ur own equipment. So. I started with a half rack and a 300lb + free barbell weight set and immediately got addicted from there. My training frequency has never been higher or more consistent and i was able to get a very diverse set of equipment that gives me so much variety in training options. Overall, its 100% the best thing I have ever done and i think i will always need a home gym where I live.

You were completely right when you said having a both home gym and a gym membership is a good idea. My issue with my home gym is I wish I had a couple of machines for legs, but I don't have the space for it. My ideal scenario is to have a nice little power rack, and some kind of cable system to go along with my rings, barbell, and dumbbells. I think that would hit pretty much everything I could possibly want for general training without getting hyper specific like some machines do.

For me when I started going through cancer treatments having a home gym made it possible to continue to train. With all the unknowns and strange side effects from those treatments I highly doubt going to a commercial gym would have been consistently possible. My next goal is to find an adjustable upright pulley system to use with an armwrestling table. The pulley I currently have is fixed in one place and takes up too much space. Having a home gym also makes it possible to train when you are able to and not worry about closing times or travel time. You can also play video games in between sets.

Dream gym: some sort of large space with controlled heat that could fit a squat/bench rack, a multi use cable machine that would at least let me do cable pull downs and cable press/flies, and an adjustable quad extension/ham curl machine.
Aside from the gym however, I want things to aid recovery like a sauna, ice bath station, a nice ass bed and pillows, good supplements, etc.

I started my home gym with a few kettlebells and wanted to be more flexible and a little stronger (I lover my kettlebells). A buddy gave me a bench/squat multi gym and that changed everything. I'm no beast, but I feel better than I ever have. I love working out at my pace, with no shoes on and no distractions. I also really like the time it saves me getting ready, going to/from the gym and showering there or having to drive home all sweaty.

    • @jujimufu
      @jujimufu  2 года назад +3

the time savings is huge. Most people have a 15 minute drive to the gym on average, but that doesn't just mean 30 minutes round trip... There's also so much more time wasted in the logistics there. Over the course of 4-10 years, with everything else included, we're talking like 500-2000 hours spent just "going" to a gym and not even the workout portion. Factor that in with work commute... That's one positive thing covid brought some people, is that it made many relook the "daily" commute aspect of some types of work. So unnecessary.

I don't currently have a home gym (live in a downtown apartment, have moved around a lot in the last few years) but I've definitely started to layout a blueprint for what I want in my next home gym. Aside from what I've already mentioned, I'd want a deadlift platform, a power rack, some adjustable dumbbells, and a log. Hell an safety squat bar and a sled would be great too. Gymnastics rings are a great addition too!

From my last month of having my own homegym,i can say that its important to look at what space you have left. Its always the budget and the space that most people are going to be limited by.Theres a freedom that you feel when you can just go downstairs and train at anytime.Again what your favourite piece of equipment is,is going to be very subjective.Versatile pieces go along way like a power rack, safety squat bar,ez curl bar,a barbell that has a huge loading space, trap bar. Im still waiting for a barbell and a Lat Pulldown attachment that i can attach to my rack. It has a high and low pulley. The latter immediately saves space. Im using alot more bands in my gym.Theres always going to be some movements that you miss like a leg press/hack squat, machine flye, chest press, cable station etc. At the end of the day you cant go wrong with the heavy basics and accessory movements. Im seriously thinking of buying Jammer arms/leverage arms to attach to the front of my power rack. Doesnt take up much room and you can do things like machine shoulder presses, chest presses both seated, standing, different angles incline etc, shrugs, rdl's etc.I'd also look at a machine thats a 2 in 1 or 3 in 1 like a leg extension/lying leg curl combo. On monday i did a seated reverse leg curl using bands and it felt awesome.

Started my home gym in 2020 after gyms got shut down. Started with a pull-up bar you put on a door frame, 10-40lb dumbbells I managed to get at Walmart. Over the past 2 years I've added a lot more stuff, including a few things my local gym doesn't have (100lb plates, glute-ham raise). Still a pretty basic set-up with essentially only free weights, but it's helped me to regain the strength I lost from gyms being closed, and actually getting a PR on deadlifts at my first full powerlifting meet, I've had greater workouts than at the gym (no waiting for equipment, and with fewer exercises), and I don't have to see the weird things people do at the gym. Still have my gym membership since my home gym is in the backyard and weather is a factor, but if I ever move I can have the same set-up and probably never go back to a regular gym.

I have always trained at home for the last 9 years. First home gym was a patch of patio in our first home, the next was outside Oin a courtyard part of our rear garden where I mounted a pull-up bar to the side of house and did lots of callisthenics and kettlebells outside in all weathers. Five years ago we moved into our current house which had a double garage and I finally got my first indoor home gym. I was able to get a rack, dip station, GHD, farmers handles and other bits and love it. Always loved training at home for the simple convenience and it’s a good example to my kids to see my exercising as part of my daily life to try to stay healthy. With my work and the kids sometimes I only get about 30 minutes a day to train but I can make that work or if I’m at home wit the kids and the Mrs is out I’ll run outside do 15 pull-ups and come back in. I’ll try to do that as many times as possible whilst making dinner or cleaning the living room etc. I wouldn’t be without a home gym.

The expected perks of lifting at home:
    Lifting in my underwear.
Loud death metal blaring with no headphones ( I don’t like wearing headphones)
    Not fighting over equip.
    Unexpected perks:
    Lifting naked.
Time to lift leisurely (I don’t believe in sitting looking at my phone for 10 min rests between sets, but I can aimlessly bounce around between light accessory lifts for the ten minute rest between heavy singles/doubles without having to feel like I’m hogging all the dumbbells or whatever). I can stop lifting to eat dinner or tend to chores then go back to lifting.
Lifting frequency. I can hit small muscle groups literally every day.
Easier consistency. It’s hard to not lift if your barbell is 10’ away from your bed. Makes it easy not to be lazy.
Even if you are worried about taxing your cns you can still probably do low weight high volume calf raises or forearm exercises or delt raises or similar. You can always find SOMETHING that isn’t overtrained and won’t fry out your recovery.
Been making tons of gains. Never thought I would weigh 230 with abs in my life

Starting small and building on it is how your muscles work. It's how your body worked from before you were even born. It's how life works in general, for most of us anyway!
I live in a tiny, one bedroom studio apartment in the UK. I currently have a rickety old 'ladies' foldable bench press bench with a quad extension / hamstring curl addon (not ideal for a guy who's 6'3"), two cheap 1.5" spinlock bars that screw together in the middle, some plastic coated concrete plates and 3 pairs of miss-matched dumbells.
I have to lean over/around the bench to reach the sink/washing machine/microwave. If I want to do deadlifts, squats, bent over rows or shoulder presses I have to flip my sofa on its end and lean up against the wall in the corner so I have enough floor space to use the bar safely.
It suits my needs right now as I'm just getting started (again, after a decade off). It's not much, but it's mine and I make it work!

I love public gyms something about being in public and having "gym friends" is more satisfying to me than investing in home gym equipment

For me, I created my home gym to support my long working days and lack of a drivers licence: it takes a LONG time to walk/take the bus to the gym (I live north of the polar circle 😆) and sometimes its -30°C to -40°C. So being able to get off work at 19, and just change and work out and be done by 20:30 is 🤘

Oh yeah, and on my wishlist is a cable stack: sometimes I just wanna do some accessory work man, my mental energy does not allow every back workout to be pendlay barbell rows

One of the biggest benefits I have found is not having to compete with other people to use the equipment. For instance the other day a guy at the gym tied up the good leg press machine for over 45 minutes while he mostly walked around and talked on his phone in-between his 4 sets of 10. Working out at home means I can do the exercise(s) i want, when I want, in the order I want, while listening to the music I want.

My home gym started when I worked a 50-70 hour a week shitty job that made it hard to go to the gym so I bought a kettlebell set to get in quick workouts. Over the next few years it grew to the point where I needed to spend an annual gym membership and I'd have everything I'd need. I've saved thousands and I've never waited for any peice of equipment or delt with bad gym goers or worse bad gym staff.

I have a strongmangym at home. in my barn and outside. i have almost no machines. Only free weights and almost all strongman equipment i need. To fill out the gaps i go to regular gym 1 time a week and train with machines. It's very cold at the winter to train in there but i'm going to install a cheap fireplace soon. I have almost built every equipment on my own, (not the weights and barbell). i recently destroyed my ceiling to build a higher ceiling so i can press logs and other equipment over my head standing. I like to train by myself and in the cold because it's training my discipline. But the cold is not perfect conditions for building muscle and technique. But like jujimufu said, don't let space limit you, don't let anything limit you. If you really want anything in life, go get it.

I became so much more consistent with training at home! I don’t have to worry about people bothering me or even waiting on equipment when doing supersets. Right now my goal is to insulate and drywall my garage gym but my BIG dream is to build a separate space for my gym and workout with friends!

I remember visiting the Powerhouse Gym In Columbus, and thinking “this place is pretty cool”. I did a very small workout where I tried a couple machines, but I just wanted to see the gym. Then I walked into the “dungeon” and was in love immediately. Chipped walls, exposed cinderblock, uncovered floors, old and beat up equipment. I loved it immediately. So I model my home gym after that style of gym

Once you are done setting up everything, you should consider doing a throwback upside-down fan mail or 'mean tweets' video. I always got a kick out of that. Obviously not ideal to do that frequently, but a quick throwback version could be fun. Take care my man, happy to see everything coming along 👍

With my home gym the main thing I wanted was convenience and isolation. I've developed some serious agoraphobia and the idea of leaving my house almost every day to go to a gym was beyond me. So being able to work out at home, no one to bother me, blasting music or awkwardly grunting in silence was perfect. I also purchased a kind of all in one shitty bench/leg extension-curl/preacher curl/squat rack off of amazon for pretty cheap. It sucks, it's super scary to use, but it worked for me and I could store it in the closet every day. Convenience and isolation for sure.

Love your gym. I'm not at that level, but having more variety of equipment would be great.
A home gym has really helped my progression due to the convenience. I havea squat rack(with chin up bar), a couple of barbells, bumper plates, bench and adjustable dumbell set.
Looking to get some rack attachments such as a landmine and dip bar pretty soon.

The easy part about lifting weights is lifting weights you just find a place that has weights and lift them. Juji dives into making making life easier, who needs the 1 millionth deadlift video or 1 billionth bench press how too, I need to know how to make stuff happen. Not too mention the positivity in his community is second to none in any genre.

I started with just a barbell, 25s and 10s. Slowly I paid myself a gym membership to afford equipment and found cheap weights on Craigslist or at goodwill. Just got an Amazon power rack and will be picking up a multi-purpose machine good for legs and some arm stuff. Keep an eye out for deals and grow it slowly. Don’t need to drop $10k for equipment right at the start.

Barbell, dumbbells, Z-bar, a few kettlebells and a multigym. Honestly, I mostly use the multigym ever since I got it. It's a weird pneumatic one, which is quite quiet, adjustable to well beyond my range and enables most exercises I previously used the free weights for, and have alternate exercises that substitutes for the rest. Not to mention all the new exercises (pressing down instead of lifting up!) it makes possible.
So, I'm sort of going down the opposite path Juji's taken, I'm moving to fewer devices rather than more. Still, these paths all lead to the same place, we just travel at different paces.

i have a start on a home gym that almost fulfills my needs, definitely not my wants. I was able to construct a building only 400sq ft but you can actually fit quite a bit of stuff in that space. The downside is a lot of home gym equipment is just not good quality for a bigger lifter so I have bought all commercial equipment so far. Oh and I do have a mini fridge in that small space as well! Here's to hoping someday I am fortunate as you juji to have 4000sq ft of play area!

I dream of building my own home gym myself. I will buy a house to raise a big family in and we will have an awesome home gym where I will teach my kids how to do the barbell movements, etc. I already have a lot of equipment and I'm just in my early 20s, but it will have a bunch of resistance training stuff and an outdoor area with pullup bars, some parkour obstacles that the kids and I could reconfigure every now and then, and there'd be trees to climb all around.

I live in an apartment with two roommates and two cats. I am lucky my partner supports my fitness so we made a little nook behind the couch. My barbell and weights are all thrift bought. I got a promotion, so I finally got some quality grip tools (shout out to Grip Genie!). I want more room for some traditional kung fu and Okinawan karate equipment, like a makiwara, mook jung (wooden dummy) and plum blossom poles (for stance work). I have a small space, so I got a nice shelf to fit my smaller tools and exercise/martial arts books. A little resourcefulness and creativity go a long way.

Home gym is just so much better for progress. Having a home gym should be like having a kitchen or a living room. I think some people don’t see progress or cant stick to it because they have restricted their exercise to only when they can get to the gym. Home gym plays by your rules. Home gym grows with you. Where there is ground there is gym.

I took a tiny little basement garage and turned it into my little gym home and it's not much but you know what, it's mine and I have what I need (for the most part) and love the time I spend in it. I never realized home much I would enjoy having my own gym until I bought my barbell and plates off Craigslist then it exploded from there. Got some stuff for free, bought some stuff new, and some stuff used. Do I have more I want to get? Of course. Am I happy with what I have? Hell yeah. Do I have room for more? Nope. Am I gonna get more and make it work anyway? Damn straight lol.

First of all I have bad health, but I still try to motivate myself to do weight training and cardio.I just love it!
I don't have room for machines at home. But in the living room I have hidden in a corner a decent bench and a series of different weights hex dumbbells from light to heavy enough to even train legs. I also have some kettlebells and a retro gym shaper that is folded in a storage space. The one chuck norris advertised years ago.😀. By the way, I still find this very useful and pleasant to use. And it might be recommended if you have a low budget. They are regularly on second-hand sites at small prices. With some ingenuity, there are several exercises to do that approach the pulley system of a gym. Outside I have a pull-up bar and a homemade Trx. And that's it! I go to the gym 3 times a week and do all the exercises I can't do at home. And at home I train whenever I want and at least once a week, sometimes a full body or sometimes concentrated on, for example, one muscle group. This works perfectly for me! I wouldn't want to miss my mini home gym. The feeling that no matter what happens, you can still train at home is worth a lot to me. Sometimes I have such health problems that I am unable to walk or move around, and this is definitely my foothold.

You can think of the principle you described as a pyramid: the top being highest priority and every lower layer less priority. Your budget limits how far you can go down and actually incorporate. For example:
    1. Barbell + plates + bench
    2. Dumbbells
    3. Cable machine
    4. Plate machines
    5. Small kitchen etc.
