Great video just got my home gym setup Rep Fitness rack, Rogue Ohio bar, plates, some bumpers for fun and Rep open trap bar Rogue battle bike lost 6 lbs first month and sleeping so much better. For me the alcohol savings is PAYING for the gym!
All good points. I have an issue with enjoying the hunt for good used deals, so this helps me scratch that itch while getting great deals. I have to admit I really like my cable home gym. Tons of those cheap used in my area. I am a weirdo so I run standard plates. Cheap and work fine on my spinlock dumbbells. Tons of good deals on squat racks too. Yeah, that's literally survivorship bias. Do you look at all the bodybuilders who got injured or literally killed and never made it? Of course all the people like Arnold never had that problem, if they did, you wouldn't even know who they are.
I built a home gym for fairly cheap. It is affordable if you know what to look for. I held off on a bench because of the price and just did floor presses. I recently bought an adjustable bench on sale for a really good price.
Here’s a man that speaks my language……home gyms are awesome and a retreat to lift and workout on your own with distractions at your neighborhood gyms. Love your contents.
I bought the yoke from the Strength shop instead of a rack. You can use it for everything, squats, presses and all the running exercises. And with the safetys it is also safe
Thank you man... I came to under $5k with all the things needed for my home gym. This means a lot bro. I got some multifunctional machines cuz my room is pretty small and it was way cheaper than i expected
Glad he's keeping it real. Won't lie I've bought, sold, and traded, till I've got a very nice gym. But realistically none of my more expensive stuff made me any stronger. I will say my gym is also my sanctuary, and it's a nice place to hang out.
Started building my home gym last year, now I’m upgrading it because 1) I’m going serious about it, 2) I made progress to the point my old equipment will soon be insufficient to keep growing and 3) it became my own sanctuary, the place I’m at peace with myself. I’m contrast now that I’m on vacations I went to a public gym and immediately realized the advantages of having my own home gym (starting with no wait to use benches, barbells, dumbbells), honestly I’m at the point I’ll only go to a public gym if and only if I’m not at home
Completely besides the point but I’m loving the production quality. Really nailed the key and fill lighting, videos are looking absolutely mint. Keep it up man
Garage gymer as well. Spent a lot more as I’ve upgraded equipment over the years but still believe it’s a solid investment. Originally spent on low cost equipment and most of it has stayed the same. Squat rack w/pull-up bar->power rack Cap barbell->power & Olympic barbell Steel plates->polyurethane bumper plates Titan fitness rickshaw Adjustable oly dumbbells Roman chair/back extension Get a lot of solid work in. Only thing I wish I had was a pulley system still but my garage is open so lol no ty rn
I have to admit I went all Rogue on my home gym. Rack, bars, plates, benches, specialty bars , dumbbells etc.. even bands lol. Midlife crisis probably lol
For most people I recommend Iron Master bench. It cost a bit more but when you inevitably want to add exercise variety it has a whole ecosystem. I’ve had mine almost 10 years with leg extension and decline leg holder without issues.
Signature fitness half rack is nice and cheap for having 3x3 uprights. It is absolutely insane how much you will pay for a rep or rogue or sorinex or even some titan racks.
I was looking at this one. I don't like the non straight pullup bar, but it is a good deal when compared to the other brands. My only caveat is the customization. While the extra attachments can fit due to hole and upright size, adding extensions may not fit as well. I'm considering getting a rep rack and using the signature safeties and other attachments, they're less than half the price for the same function. Also from what I've seen rep turns out to be the best balance of cost and customization capabilities. Titan as well but the hole sizes are a weird 11/16" in the t3 and x3, which is slightly larger than the 5/8 that most others use, which might make attachments from other brands not stable.
I will always stan for the assault bike. Cheaper than a treadmill, can be more brutal than anything you've ever done, and kills your quads. Other than that, I've pretty much built my home gym the same way. Still need to get a pair of nuobells tho lol.
Nice video! your gym reminded me a bit to mine haha, Some time ago my parents got a huge treadmill for two people for like 80 bucks I just got the speed sensor closer to the motor pulley and it worked flawlessly, just now some buttons began to fail after some years, so i'll take care of it soon. But it is a machine that I didn't even knew existed! Image Wide Stride Duo 48, It has been a nice machine even if it looks a bit old. I also got my grandparents Schwinn Excersiser stationary bike and i'm restoring it, some say the bike is worthless but I kinda like it's aesthetics so I use it often.
I bought the cheapest set of barbell and weights set I could get. It came with an EZ bar too. It's about 90Kg in weights but for me as (re)begginerit's pretty much all i need for 1-2 years. I already had 2 20 kg adjustable dumbells and used that. The bench was cheap too and it's adjustable. Also and eliptical and a ministepper to get cardio in. Nothing fancy. Lots of elastic bands and even a suspension trainer. Did I mention a pull-up bar? I can do anything at home. All these under 1000$ together and over time. You don;t even need all these, but they added up over time.
Key Concept: “I don’t want to be around other people”. Design Brief: “…has just about everything you NEED to get as big and as strong as you want.” Solution = Oly Barbell/plates + solid saw horses. Chin/Dip station + weight belt/chain. ….add three kettlebells (heavy-ish, heavy, damn heavy) and an ab-wheel as luxury extras.
When Covid hit I was in Guam (Navy) and my roommate and I bought a $200 rack with a bench and made the weights out of concrete (before the videos came out about it) and our bar from an iron pipe (which we had to fill with concrete as well due to bending). All of this was in my small ass barracks room 😂😂😂
barbell+plates, FID bench, adjustable racks (squat, bench, pressing) and a few dumbbells. does most of what i need when i can't get to the gym or just want to do some accesory work 💪 cost me about $1k. no cardio machines
Moving into a studio apartment in central london, so had to painfully sell my home gym (ironmasters, 140kg plates, super bench pro, the whole lot) Saved so much time this year working out in my garage. Just hard to justify when I’m moving to a 350sq ft room with multiple gyms that are a 5 min walk away.
I love my Treadmill, it is easy to fold for small spaces and it was so easy to assemble. Not only am I enjoying my workouts but my grand daughters use it for P.E classes.
Been training in my garage since roughly 2004. My gym is a little over the top, but my cousin closed his public powerlifting gym and sold me everything (thousands of Dallas worth of equipment) for $800 if I would agree to move it all out within couple of days. I moved it all in one afternoon. Personally, I wouldn't skimp on a good power bar, you don't need a Texas Power Bar or Rogue Ohio Power Bar, but you can find a good power bar for around $200. Also, go to Tractor Supply and buy stall mats, those puzzle piece mats tend to be much too soft and get pretty funky smelling after a while. I actually prefer the 2x3 to 3x3 racks and have had both. Narrower bars, like several of the specialty bars fit much better in the 2x3 style. Also, I don't get all the hate for Titan, I have never had a single issue with them. Perhaps I just got lucky.
i have a rack with pully system, a bar +ezbar, loadable dumbells, a set of rings some bands and weights. the rack also has monkey bars with different grip variations for pull ups, i never feel like i cant train a certain muscle because of limited equipment.
This is something I would love to have as soon as I'm a little more established in a certain place. Without a house and a stable longterm job a nearby gym is just the best option at the moment.
Really solid list. My personal preference would be loadable dumbbells but that’s mostly because croc rows and bent presses are my jam. Then again I’m a CDB away from having a fully equipped strongman gym in my one car garage.
This was probably one of the best home gym explanations iv ever seen. love the home gym set up bc I don't like going to big commercial gyms either, goal is to one day have a home gym set up to.
If you can't find/afford the nuobells, you can make your own adjustable dumbbells out of 1" all thread, 5" long 1" black iron pipe, some standard plates, and a few 1" nuts. You slide the black iron pipe on the 1" all thread and use that as the handle, then sandwich the pipe with your standard plates, then secure it all with the 1" nuts on either side. You can gut the all thread with a cheap hacksaw to whatever length you want. I've loaded one dumbbell up to 200lbs before with no problems. You can also buy the standard plates as you need them.
inspire body lift bl1 is most times like training on a pro gym machine, you can get it up to 200 kg/440lbs resistance and cost just a little over $1000 USD now. if youre light weight, you can add extra weights to the seat or footrest to max it out. dont think ive seen it ever tested either but reviews on it on amazon ranks it high, i also have it and im glad i got it. Its much safer than freeweights, freeweights at home is dangerous and an accident waiting to happen in my view other than a few sets of adjustable dumbbells and a bench which go well with body lift bl1. then add a rowing machine or cycle, a situp bench and youre done.
I do sissy squats and nordic curls to substitute the leg extension and leg curl machine. When I say doing nordic curls, I mean attempting to, man they be hard
My bench came with one attached at the end with a preacher pad. I've occasionally removed the preacher and just grabbed the hamstring curl part with my hands and do a seated row variant with it.
Good stuff, I love my home gym. My 2 cents. Safety is everything, so get a real power rack, and good safeties. Not soem squat stand. Theres likely nobody around to help you when you get stuck, which will likely happen eventually. Also theres lots of awesome rack attachments you can add on later. Thing 2. You ae more likely to want to workout in your home gym, if the equipment is actually nice. So I differ from Bromley on this one, and vote to buy fairly decent new equipment. It doesnt need to be top end. I also have a lot of titan stuff, which is usually good value. I use my gym almost every day, so I'm glad that my stuff is actually nice. I've used crap home gym equipment before and to me it really does make a difference. Also on specialty bars. My view on them is to give more variety. At a commercial gym theres lots of machines, bars, etc. In a home gym you usually lack that. so some specialty bars and stuff help give more options. Which isnt truly needed. But can be used to give your home gym a more premium feel, and can give more options to rotate lifts.
I found an airdyne just like yours for $35 on Facebook. It was gross and rusty, so I took it apart and cleaned and repainted it. I probably have like $70 total into it and I have a super intense cardio machine at my house now 👍🏻
Im on an extremely fixed-income. Here's my home gym. A four by five pussle mat, a 50, 35, and 30 lbs kettlebell. A codura backpack with 20 to 40 lbs of weight in it. Knee sleeves, gloves, and a back brace. Oh yeah, and a pull-up bar. One day, I'll get some dumbells like those, some more kettlebells and a bench. I can sqout and bench press at the gym down the road a block away. Besides that I walk all the time and am really only in this for general fitness. I tryed the Tom Platz leg day about a week ago, and I know what im not. A body builder, lol
I will say I’ve had bad luck with breaking low-mid grade treadmills ever since I got above 250lb. Probably the one thing I wouldn’t be willing to buy a dusty, 1980’s version of
I wont lie. I have an SSB as my first specialty bar too.... and I love it so damn much. I think it's a fair bar to have as a first specialty one but it's definitely not as versatile as a multi purpose bar
When I started my home gym in 09 I got the sears special, bar + 300lbs for $300.....the collars broke after a couple months. I would definitely get a decent bar and cheap weights
I always hear people say that it's easy to buy used plates and barbells but there are essentially none for sale in my city of 3m+ people. You see resellers listing them for retail (or more) and the odd person with old school cap-style plates that won't fit on an Olympic bar. Its really hard to find decent used gym equipment at all unless you want a 20 year old treadmill or tiny 1-5lb dumbells.
Awesome review!!!! I’m thinking of getting the nuobell dumbbells, really like those. I think they are the best adjustable that feel like the single ones!!!
I like your ultra budget approach to this- just get what you can and don’t overthink it. I will say tho saying the Titan rack is the same durability as Rogue is just a bit of an overstatement lol, but overall rlly enjoyed the video
I lucked out right at the start of covid before everything sold out or got inflated and got a brand new Weider bar and plate set for 190 at a Play It Again Sports. Never saw those prices again. A chain from Lowe's and a pair of cable d-handles in a tree for pullups and dips, squat stands from Amazon, some cinderblocks to use as a bench, an olympic dumbbell, and resistance bands, and my backyard was pretty much a whole gym at that point. The total probably ended up around 500 for the stuff i used daily.
Bent bars is why I switched from commercial gyms to home gym. I knew I could get better bars for myself. Most gyms are not built for strength athletes.
This is like the third time i commented on this video but what you say is so true. I watch garage gym tour videos on RUclips and i swear people have every piece of rep and rogue equipment and are lucky if they can squat and bench 225 but have absolute tanks for racks and every specialty bar that look like theyve never been touched. Rediculous
Very nice mate! It's gotta be done, a decent amount of reasonably cheap equipment for times you can't get to the gym or even so you could have days at your home gym instead of the gym (or crap like Lockdowns) Or if you just want to train hassle free at home? Thats what i do having got annoyed at all the waiting, gross sweat covered equipment, weights and dumbells that are never put back. I've got a decent selection of weights, dumbbells, barbells, dip bars, bench, squat rack/bench rack with safeties (ive not got the room currently for a power cage) so i can train Squats and Bench Press without killing myself haha! I even got a doorway chin up bar, excercise bands to do assisted chins/pull ups, an excercise ball for ab work and I can even do lower back hyperextensions which are normally only possible with a big bench that holds your legs. I'm nearly 49 so got back into serious training 3 years ago for mood improvement, fitness and just to look and feel better and more able to deal with running round after my kids. Best thing I ever did! I started a year before those bloody Lockdowns so none of that affected me one bit, I just carried on hassle free. I bodybuild and have put ALL the muscle I had in my 30s back on and more besides! Plus due to my lack of machines I think I've built a better body this time round by sticking mainly with barbell/dumbbell compounds. Even the band assisted (due to elbow pain but also great for ensuring perfect form and enough reps) chins/pull ups I do instead of pull-downs have worked wonders, with my back appearing wider and thicker. All in all I've put roughly 50lb of muscle on in 3 or so years, not bad for someone that's nigh on 50 years old haha!
I do still want a Power Rack with a pulley system just to finish things off (there are SO many excercises that you can do with pulleys!) The problem is the prices are so much more expensive here in the UK but I will do it eventually. I am really hoping that I can eventually get my son and maybe even daughters into weight training so I'm thinking that at least it will all get lots of use and not be a waste of money.
for people who like to craft, buff dudes has a few videos on how to build a bench, how to build a rack. I ended up building the power rack and its been fine but the cost of wood made me wonder if I was really saving much money lol
For cardio I just bought a jump rope for 10 bucks for bad weather, otherwise I can just walk for a couple miles to the store and then carry home the groceries (free rucking) or ride the bicycle. A treadmill is super nice to have but they're yet another big expense, have the footprint of yet another full rack and I don't feel like maintaining them.
if there's one thing that I can call a blessing in disguise from the lockdowns, it's that there's more love for building a home gym than ever before! for cardio machine though, I say calorie rower is another good option.
I’m surprised you never mentioned any strongman equipment. When I made my home gym during Covid the first implements I got my hands on were kegs and sand. I got 6 empty kegs FOR FREE! And you can get serious work done with just those
Ha watching this on Memorial day..fortunately back in Feb 2020 I cancelled my gold's gym sub ( good timin for me eh lol) and when I bought my home a few months later was blessed to have a 22X28 shed in backyard which obvi I turned into a gym!
i built my own gym never looked back. i was paying $500.00 a year for gym membership. most my weights was given to me only thing i bought is a rack and bench. but i am updating to hex weights soon.
@alexander Bromley opinions on getting pit shark belt squat or make shift belt squat for the home gym? Will it help as a recovery or "i am injured by need to workout" aid?
the only thing u really need in a home gym is....anger ....raw emotions....some.more anger mixed with some regret and saddness with a feeling of wanting her back....after this all u need is some dumbells a bench and a olympic bar with some heavy ass plates
Buy used. Iron plates are still expensive but machines are cheap. Since virus lock downs ended I have gotten so much stuff for free or nearly free. Things I've gotten free- stair climber, spin bike, fan bike, strong man log roll, pull up assist machine $20- pec deck $100- seated leg curl & extension, vertical leg press, compact hack squat machine
Where I live i would need to spend about twice that amount and end up with worse quality equipment :(((( still love my home-gym tho, been running your 70s powerlifter program (with some minor adjustments due to lack of equipment) and it has been a blast
Same with me with regards to the price of the equipment... one day ill get it though. Im in no rush for a home gym at the moment, perhaps in a few years I had one ~2 years ago but i sold all the equipment i had as it was very shitty, and thats putting it lightly lol
Loved it, especially your love for knurling 😂. I have a 30 year old bar that came with a 300# set that's held 500 pounds without bending, but I got a Boneyard ohio bar because, well, Boneyard 😊 Also have three of your books, getting Kong soon.
Nicely done. But a year too late. I have already spent a small fortune on some new nice stuff because I’m picky and wanted a new gym not a used one. All the information you spoke to is a great way to do it.
Power racks are over rated for home gtms and usually eat up way too much space. Big fan of stands. I scored an eleiko squat stand combo(it has a lower rack set for bench and handles on the back for dips). Best piece of equipment i own. Training powerlifting in a home gym environment is the way when you have a busy life.

These days iron cost like more than twice what it used to. Covid really made all home gym equipments cost skyrocket.
Facebook marketplace is your friend ;)
I got mine after during Covid, and I did not pay a ton.
Generally if you don't need your whole gym by tomorrow you can get pretty good deals just by looking around for some months.
Some Walmarts have bumpers for cheapish
goddamn. I remember when rusty fucking weights were what you wanted and they were pennies per pound.
My midlife crisis isn't going to be a sports car. My midlife crisis will be spending way too much on a homegym.
Best investment you can make
Dude, that was funny AF!🤣

A cheap cable pulley system can also add a heck of a lot of versatility for a low cost of ownership
I got one for like $80 off of Amazon, one of the best additions that I've made. Great for rehab/prehab too
And if you have a squat rack you can do a cheap diy and make it basically a functional trainer
I bought almost exactly a setup like this during the pandemic minus those dumbells.
Spent around 700 USD (converted from my country currency)
And I never went back to the gym except when I wanna do some fun bodybuilding day (which I rarely does)
The 700 USD setup still serve me to this day. I have plates that can load up to 230kg and thats plenty for me 😂
Fun fact
I also decided to just buy squat stands instead of a rack using the exact same logic looking at those weightlifter
Do u still use it?
"I rarely does" 🦧
For kroc rows and heavier presses, get a piece of 1.5” iron pipe. Cut a rubber pipe coupling in half to set the space for your hands; wrap the hose clamps w/ duct tape. Use another coupling as the collars. This’ll cost around $25.

YES. The BoS cable towers can also be used as a squat rack if you get J cups and spotter arms which is just such good value for money

Drink booze & you’ll lose. It interferes with protein synthesis.
Another option for cardio is a jump rope, you can get one for like $4 or you can simply go for a walk or run outside

I wish someone made a cheap GHD, they're so expensive for what you get and the cheap ones from China will probably wind up killing you.
@@Wayf4rer a cheap alternative is a 90° hyperextension, I got a used one from Bodyline for 100€
Honestly I couldn't justify the space they take up, when I got RDLs, SLDL, and Good Mornings.

Squat rack w/pull-up bar->power rack
Cap barbell->power & Olympic barbell
Steel plates->polyurethane bumper plates
Titan fitness rickshaw
Adjustable oly dumbbells
Roman chair/back extension
Get a lot of solid work in. Only thing I wish I had was a pulley system still but my garage is open so lol no ty rn
I have to admit I went all Rogue on my home gym. Rack, bars, plates, benches, specialty bars , dumbbells etc.. even bands lol. Midlife crisis probably lol
With your name you should have gone for Eleiko.
@@ulfdanielsen6009 Eleiko is much more expensive here
For most people I recommend Iron Master bench.
Key Concept:
“I don’t want to be around other people”.
Design Brief:
“…has just about everything you NEED to get as big and as strong as you want.”
Solution = Oly Barbell/plates + solid saw horses. Chin/Dip station + weight belt/chain.
Moving into a studio apartment in central london, so had to painfully sell my home gym (ironmasters, 140kg plates, super bench pro, the whole lot)
Saved so much time this year working out in my garage.
Titan T-3 is a great rack. had mine for years and no complaints
Honestly a reformer and an arrangement of dumbbells can get you far. Maybe a cardio machine if you can find the right fit for you.
Nice to hear a serious lifter not make rogue out to be the best and only option. I have lots of titan fitness stuff and its great
This is something I would love to have as soon as I'm a little more established in a certain place.
A bent pressing fella! Man of culture, I see
Awesome video! The only thing I would add to the list would be some bands or a kettlebell for accessory work.
I got the powerblock sport 50s during the pandemic and I was lucky to find those
inspire body lift bl1 is most times like training on a pro gym machine, you can get it up to 200 kg/440lbs resistance and cost just a little over $1000 USD now. if youre light weight, you can add extra weights to the seat or footrest to max it out. dont think ive seen it ever tested either but reviews on it on amazon ranks it high, i also have it and im glad i got it. Its much safer than freeweights, freeweights at home is dangerous and an accident waiting to happen in my view other than a few sets of adjustable dumbbells and a bench which go well with body lift bl1. then add a rowing machine or cycle, a situp bench and youre done.
I think I would add a leg curl + leg extension bench for they train certain muscles more effectively and it's hard to do them without a machine
Those leg pads are for locking in to do decline pressing and ab work like crunches
My hole gym is 90% done and i couldn’t be more exited, just need to get a Texas power , deadlift bar and I’m set
The no filter straight facts is what makes this
Discovering Titan Fitness is the reason I making ALL KINDZZZ OF GAINZZZZ!!!! Great video
You can add rings imo, they are very cheap, they are very versatile, they can go anywhere
I’ll keep this in mind when building up my home gym
I went with the Titan X-3 Flatfoot 6 post rack. Best upgrade for my home gym.
Honestly really needed to hear those smiling cues. Definitely gonna get those personality gains.
Went with ROGUE monster lite rack w/ pins, cerokate barbell, and the premium round dumbbells, the oly rings and a Velocidor on the way
I always hear people say that it's easy to buy used plates and barbells but there are essentially none for sale in my city of 3m+ people.
I built a wooden power rack from the one buff dudes video. Don’t regret it for a second! 300$
Like your ideas. Also I like bumper plates. I like X-Training makes very good quality bumper plates and power racks
I like your ultra budget approach to this- just get what you can and don’t overthink it.
I will say tho saying the Titan rack is the same durability as Rogue is just a bit of an overstatement lol, but overall rlly enjoyed the video
Love this video for the same reasons you mentioned you rather skip the gym and train at home!
Your a godsend brother, love your content.
Facts I just workout at home now
This is like the third time i commented on this video but what you say is so true.
The rack I got has a smith machine and a functional trainer with a good amount of attachments for the rack
for people who like to craft, buff dudes has a few videos on how to build a bench, how to build a rack.
Great ideas here thanks 👍. Now I just need to get a house with a garage 😂😂😂
as an introvert i love this
if there's one thing that I can call a blessing in disguise from the lockdowns, it's that there's more love for building a home gym than ever before!
for cardio machine though, I say calorie rower is another good option.
I’m surprised you never mentioned any strongman equipment. When I made my home gym during Covid the first implements I got my hands on were kegs and sand. I got 6 empty kegs FOR FREE! And you can get serious work done with just those
I just received my Ab 3000 v2. Love it already
For my cardio workout I only use a jump rope
Ha watching this on Memorial day..fortunately back in Feb 2020 I cancelled my gold's gym sub ( good timin for me eh lol) and when I bought my home a few months later was blessed to have a 22X28 shed in backyard which obvi I turned into a gym!
i built my own gym never looked back. i was paying $500.00 a year for gym membership. most my weights was given to me only thing i bought is a rack and bench. but i am updating to hex weights soon.
I went down to Play it again sports where I bought my stuff
@alexander Bromley opinions on getting pit shark belt squat or make shift belt squat for the home gym? Will it help as a recovery or "i am injured by need to workout" aid?
the only thing u really need in a home gym is....anger ....raw emotions....some.more anger mixed with some regret and saddness with a feeling of wanting her back....after this all u need is some dumbells a bench and a olympic bar with some heavy ass plates
Buy used.
Iron plates are still expensive but machines are cheap.
Since virus lock downs ended I have gotten so much stuff for free or nearly free.
Things I've gotten
free- stair climber, spin bike, fan bike, strong man log roll, pull up assist machine
$20- pec deck
$100- seated leg curl & extension, vertical leg press, compact hack squat machine
Finally, a home gym video for me
First time here but man, this is a great video! Just a bunch of common sense.
Im in no rush for a home gym at the moment, perhaps in a few years
I had one ~2 years ago but i sold all the equipment i had as it was very shitty, and thats putting it lightly lol
Loved it, especially your love for knurling 😂. I have a 30 year old bar that came with a 300# set that's held 500 pounds without bending, but I got a Boneyard ohio bar because, well, Boneyard 😊 Also have three of your books, getting Kong soon.
I have a similar setup but with Olympic dumbbells and a 70€ Amazon cable pulley system
As a former cardio-skipper, I can assure you that adding a Golden Retriever to my home gym has cured that problem.
