New Jersey Transit's Infamous Fleet Of Buses : The 2012-2013 Designline ECOCoach CNG Commuter

  • New Jersey Transit has had a history of doing some odd things with their buses orders, the best example currently is of the NABI 416.15s that are currently in service. But when it comes down to a fleet of buses that have problems across the board, these Designlines took the crown.
    Back in 2011, NJT made an order for 76 of these buses to replace the 40ft MCI CNGs. MCI did not bid on the contract as far as I know, which is why Designline became the winner.
    7202 was delivered in October of 2012 and entered service a day or two after Hurricane Sandy struck the tri-state area. After testing and months of delays, 7204 & 7205 were delivered in April/May of 2013, with 7201, 7206-7214 following suit months after.
    During their time in service, lots of problems started coming to light. Two of the biggest problems with these buses were that the front door would open at high speeds, and that the driver's dashboard would involuntarily move, which of these became a massive safety hazard. Operators also did not like the transmission on these buses.
    With the arrival of the new MCI D4500CT CNGs, number series 7278-7361, the 12 Designlines(7202 went back to Designline, 7203 was never delivered) were pulled from service in December 2014/January 2015 and moved to a lot in Jersey City until they can be legally disposed of, as they were paid for with federal funds. These buses have been prematurely retired from service.
    What you'll see in this video are interior and exterior videos of these buses in service on various Howell Garage routes. These buses were powered by a Cummins ISL-G engine with an interesting transmission choice, the ZF 6AP1700B transmission.

    Man, I forgot those buses ran until 2014. I kept thinking they retired in 2013 for some odd reason.

    7204 and 7205 were accepted in May 2013, the rest later in the year except 7202 which was in service November/December 2012. All are stored off Tonnelle Avenue (1-9), south of the Northeast Corridor and are visible when entering and exiting the North River tunnels.

      Partially correct. 7203 was never delivered, 7202 went back to Designline for adjustments. 7205 arrived in Late April, passed inspection in early May and went into service in the 2nd week of May. 7204 was delivered in early may and went into service in the middle of May on and off. That bus was OOS pretty often due to electrical problems.

      Design line went bankrupt. Only able to deliver around 24 if I remember. Nj transit removed half the fleet from service and used them for spare parts untill mci was able to deliver. Once delivered, they were removed from service and sent to their scrap yard until they can be disposed

    Now I’m a huge ZF fan (grew up riding novabus rts 5076 - 5124 and the 3rd gens with the lfs) and I love the Cummins engine, but it’s something on here it doesn’t fit well. Idk if it’s me or what but these busses look like they were rushed, I totally forgot these existed by early 2014.

    • @ShaneAkACaitSith810
      @ShaneAkACaitSith810  2 года назад +2

      They weren't rushed since NJ Transit co-designed the model, it was just put together poorly because of NJ Transit's horrible specifications.

    What was it about these particular transmissions the drivers didn't like. I mean weren't they similar to the ones their NABI 416's had with them being ZF's also 🤔🤷🏽

    • @ShaneAkACaitSith810
      @ShaneAkACaitSith810  3 года назад +2

      That's the thing. These are bigger buses, so the transmission makes them a little slower compared to the MCIs. They had a slightly more powerful transmission, but compared to the Allisons that Howell operators have been used to over the years, the ZFs made them seem slower.
