Do you want to pure your irons like a tour pro? Watch this...
Are you tired of hitting it fat, thin, toed, heeled, maybe even a shank?
Today you're going to find the best way to pure those irons, get some distance back in there, and hit them straight, high, and knock down some flagsticks.
Matt Walter, PGA Teaching Professional at Vanderbilt Legends Club shows us how.
We're going to get you hitting your irons the best you ever have. I have three drills that we're going to do today, all of which are going to help you find the center of the club face with your irons the best way possible.
So, let's talk about what happens when you hit a good iron shot. What are we looking for, dynamically, at impact? So, when we hit a good iron shot, it should be ball-first contact, and the club head should be traveling down, still, as it contacts the golf ball.
So, our divots are actually taking place after the ball, three to four inches after the ball, and not before the ball or at the golf ball.
So, if you want to hit your irons pure, we have to be able to ensure that we're hitting the golf ball first, the club head's still going down, and catches the golf ball with the divot just past the ball, and going through the shot.
Now, just because I said the club head is going down doesn't mean your arms are going down, but the club head is still traveling down. Also, at impact, we want some shaft lean, right? We want to have our hands in front of the golf ball.
That's the Holy Grail of golf shots everybody talks about. "I've got to have more shaft lean."
Well, today's drills are going to help you achieve that, and it's not going to be in the ways you might think, where you're actually going to focus on shaft lean.
We're going to do it by focusing on some other drills that are going to bring it in because you have to have shaft lean to hit the shots the way you want. The first drill uses a towel...
Watch the video to see all 3 drills, and start puring those irons.

Good instruction and drills. Thanks.
I am 75yr. 7 HC. Been struggling used your drills. Got my yardage back with driver stayed in fairway. Went down 3 irons where I was before struggling. Tried many other I videos no luck. Glad I found yours. Thanks
Keep up the good work
If you have sweaty armpits this is also a good drill for you
Wish I found this 5 years ago. 3 absolutely brilliant drills thanks
Great drills. Just went to the range using the right elbow tuck drill minus the towel. My right elbow must have been all over the place but keeping it tighter to the body and focusing on my club head path on my back swing has really helped. 2 large buckets and most of the shots felt great, only a few miss hits (I'm a 22 handicap!) A few times I rotated my hips a little early and the ball went right, never a slice, just lost accuracy, once I focused more on a subtle weight transfer and letting the club head do the work, the consistency of the shots was much better. Subscribed!
Matt
Have come back after a five year elbow injury and have had issues with irons. Had a long range session today doing the first two drills and found some real improvement.
Thanks for this they are really good.

Just bought a new golf net for the back yard..can’t wait to watch these videos and immediately be able to go practice them in the comfort of my own yard. No more wasted time driving and spending money at the range. With these drills, my net, and impact stickers I can work better at home to eventually make my range time before a round more efficient. Thank you.
Thank you so much for the information! Have a great day everyone!

This helped me A TON. Kept me more relaxed and arms more involved
Cheers for the Video! Apologies for the intrusion, I would love your opinion. Have you thought about - Paneevelyn Swinging Clubsman (do a google search)? It is an awesome exclusive product for revealing an effortless golf swing technique minus the hard work. Ive heard some super things about it and my close friend Aubrey after many years got astronomical results with it.
@@novaknovakovic1585 good athletes will figure it out. If you're not a good athlete then you need a good swing.
The club is a hammer. Swing like the head weighs 5 lbs, you can't make a bad swing with a sledge hammer (you would almost certainly hurt yourself)
Go hit a tree with a sledgehammer. Thats how you hit a golf ball.
Best iron video. Lots of others focus on metaphors and the “feel” or “sensation” which could vary based on the person.
Great drills for balance, I an WAS a single digit hdcp senior man who has Parkington’s.
Was going to try one plane swing but, my golf club is pretty hilly.
So, to balance drills should be helpful. Thanks
I am having all kinds of trouble hitting my irons pure. I can’t wait to get to the range and try these drills. Thanks!
I will try all 3 drills
I've been doing towel drill for year's. It really help connecting your swing and adding the other two drills solidify Ballance and weight shift.
Thank you
I know and have used all these drills and variants of same. NEVER have i had the execution and purpose explained this well. Maybe one of the most useful golf videos made.
Simple to follow and I can share with my wife too!
Thanks, I never knew the divot was suppose to be that far away, I'm sure that's why I have such dispersion in my distances
Great video. I believe it will help me with practice. Thanks! Now where do you focus your eyes on the ball - front, back top . I have always thought focus your eyes on the front of the ball andi in the downswing the ball get is the way. Is that correct?
Honestly I have never paid attention to that but you can look to the inside of the ball for a draw and the outside of the ball for a fade if you like.
I do the same I just tape another shaft to the 7 Irion so I can clear the hips and gives me the correct path on the impact zone
Hi I'm 70 and just started golf to keep my son company. Your drills are not just easy to follow but easy to do so if you're still around thank you
Enjoy that time with your son. I’m 28 and lost my dad about 2 years ago. What id give to play even one more round with my dad
This video is freaking awesome!!! In one hour, these three drills had me hitting the ball consistently straight. The foot together exercise was great.
Fabrice
Great drills! I have been looking for something to help my ball striking and consistency.
This video is very useful! Thank you Matt!
I struggle a lot with my long irons. I think I’m trying to hard to get underneath the ball instead of the iron doing the work! Had absolutely no confidence with them...
Spent a few days on the driving range applying these drills and can definitely see a difference already
Thanks for your video. Good tips to try something different on the range. I went from hitting irons pure - to cannot hit my irons at all - I think its because of my pursuit for distance on my longer irons...my 8 iron was 150 and 4 iron was 180. In trying to get my 8 iron to 160 and my 4 iron to 190 / 200, I cant hit any iron now. My range time today was the worst I had in 4 years since I started golf. Have to start from scratch and basics.
Great tips, can't wait to try these out at the range today. Shaft lean is hard to imagine and this helps. Thanks.
Thank you for the drills Mr. Walter!
Thanks for explaining everything so thoroughly!! I was really struggling to make consistent contact with my irons at the range this morning. Im going to go try these drills now. definitely subscribing for more!
This helped sooo much
Very good drill, thanks
Thanks. I’ll be trying this today.
i m going to take a good look!!!! thx for make this vdo
Effing perfect. I'm trying all these tomorrow. Thank you.
You still suck?
Excellent video my irons suck this year and will try these tips
Let us know how it goes!
Great and helpful drills.
All great. The last, the step drill, is fantastic for me. Thanks.
Great drills thank you!
Nice drill...its looking very simple...
They are very simple! Subscribe for more simple drills!
Awesome drills, improved my iron hitting massively
Great to hear!
great drills to help sync up the irons
I really like these drills! The step drill works very well for me and I definitely feel like I get a turn and great compression of the ball. My question is this.....how do I stop having to step, since it's the ONLY way I can repeat the compression? Is there a point in which the turn and compression will become second nature?
It’s been a year, the answer should’ve been yes. I hope you’ve found out that it’s second nature
This is the best golf swing video I have watched, It help all aspect of my game from tee to green.
Thanks for the feedback! Be sure to check out our other videos!
Tried the towel drill - shanking 1 out of 3 1/2 swings with 7 iron - try to correct for too much in to out swing path. Suggestions?
Great video.
Bought my first set of clubs 10 years ago , 4-pw,5,3 and driver and bag new for a $99, can hit them solid at the driving range but at the tee hack it and do not like the feel at contact ,so a bought a set of forged Mizuno muscle backs hit them solid great feel .on the tee hack hack hack ??
Excellent video - made a real difference to my game - stay connected
You are good. Thank you
Great drills Matt. Thank you.
Sounds interesting but the key here is that you're not rotating your hips so much.
I wouldn't say "not at all" but still it's subtle.
So you're supposed to re-establish that tight torso-arm interaction in the downswing?
So how to you maintain arm-speed through the swing?
I can see the point of the drill is to get the upper arms properly positioned which I take it is more to the point. But you are turning your hips open at the end.
Is it okay to combine the first and second drill, as in hitting with a towel tucked into our arms and also knees and feet together?
The "towel drill" works like a champ. I used to pinch a golf flove in my left armpit and it took me from being terrible with irons to hitting them pure 95% of the time
I combine drill 1 and 2 together at the same time to work on upper and lower together ...dont know if that's recommend
I like this, good series of drills. 2 3 1 IMO
Me Too!
i will be trying these drill today thank you ...
Any improvement?
Yes it does help ...thank you!.. it feels akward but im going to keep using the training technique. ...it really does help me keep my arms closer to my body
Love using these drills. Thanks Matt!
I am by no means a great golfer, but I was better than a bogey golfer, and then the wheels came off and my swing went to s#*!- I became so disconnected. This is really helping thank you.
Thanks so much. I have lost my swing due to too many swing changes. The first two drills were the one that l often practice at range. Using short iron and hit it simple and pure
. And it always give better hits at the course. Ego got the better of me to want to have a pro swing and got myself mess up. I am taking the medicine to go back to basics. Tqvm.
Glad to hear it! Keep up the good work!
Our golf instructor told us to do the same feet together drill.
Great drills, helped my swing immediately
i watched a ton of vids. this is amazing!
So I ordered from these guys and was told may 2 thru 4 it would be shipped. Then I talked to someone on the 4th and was told my order was preparing to ship. That night, I got an email saying it won't be sent till may 26 thru 28. Also, no one is responding to me, and they keep reporting my post on Facebook. My exact words were how long did it take you to get your Straight Stick? That was it. So now, every time I ask a question, I get reported . I'm starting to wonder
I just got to bump this up again
dose this work for long irons?
I'm going to try these drills
I keep rewatching this it’s so good!
Nice drills!
Very good drill
Excellent tips
Best drill I was ever taught (along with these) from my college golf coach was to start my swing from the finish position. Literally address the ball, move into your finish position, then from there you start your golf swing. Try it.
Jesse Anderson I’m gonna try it! Thanks!
I'm eager to try this but don't quite know what it means
A really good drill. Thank you
Can the step drill work with a driver?
People have a wrong conception that arms and wrists plays role in downswing or backswing. Shoulders are the one moves in both directions and arms are merely on the way of swing and do nothing. This way, you hit ball consistently solid. No one talks about.
Great clip
Will these three drills proove effective with the driver as well?
Matt great video . My biggest problem with my irons is that i dip or drive down and loose balace going forward. Matt is there a quick fix?
Swing an oversized club. I use the Golfer's Toolbox and have players swing that. It's kind of heavy and way to long so it forces you to stay tall and swing in balance.
so helpful
Hi Matt, I think these are really great drills. Thank you. I kindly need your help. At impact, my right trailing foot has not moved at all, arms sligtly bent, shaft is not leaned forward, shoulders are square like at setup, hips the same. However, I am happy with my ball flights in general. In forward swing, I try to turn my leading hip first. Why I end up at impact in this status? What is it that I am missing that I need to do? I would be so happy to know it so thatvI can play better golf. Thank you so much. All the best.
Best golf training video EVER.
Yes I am tired of playing like an amateur scrub. I want to play like a Tour Pro.
Go chase it!
Aww buddy :( you’re not a scrub. You could be the next Tiger Woods if you put your heart to it! Didn’t your mom tell you anything as a kid? :)
Thanks! One of the best vids out there.
Great drills! I'm going to try them all. I'm curious why you touch the butt of the club with your right hand as you take your grip with your left?
I usually do that just to keep the face stable while I grip with my left hand. 1 degree of change is somewhere in the ball park of 12 yards off line at 300 yards. So to me I want to make sure the clubface is placed in my grip the same way every time.
Thanks for the response. Good info.
Good tips
Really good video
I hit my iron 2 clubs shorter than my mates.. and I can’t figure out. I hope this will help me gain some yards
Fantastic Drills! Thank you!
Thanks for watching!
This is how you take it back closed. This also forces you to shift in front of the ball (otherwise the club is coming up. Nice top.) because your front side collapsed going back. Taking it back hooded is a quick fix for slicers, DONT DO THAT TO YOURSELF. You may short term fix your slice but smother hooking it is much harder to get rid of.
Great video
Can you use the baseball drill type swing during a tournament or even just a game with friends?
No rules against it. May not produce the most consistent results when needed but would love to hear how that works for you!
Great tips mate!! Been watching lots of instructional videos and this is one of the best. Straight to the point and nice actionable tips. Subbed 🤘🏼
Great video! Ty
Are your iron lie angles slightly flat?
Nice trifecta of drills. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed! Be sure to check out our other videos!
Good video. Thanks.
Great tips Matt
great points awesome
How does this guy not have more subs??
I never knew that hitting area on that side of the range...the Little Course is right behind you, correct?
That's right! It's a little lesson tee box!
Wow the feet together drill worked wonders for me, thanks.
good points
Good stuff. I'd love to see you guys do a video on finding the bottom of your swing and ball placement based on the swing bottom.
We will! Have you seen Matt's course? Goes into a ton of detail on this. www.performancegolfzone.com/free-golf-swing-analysis If you want to see more content! Thanks for the feedback
