why do they have equal charges, though? surely the lack of a fourth oxygen atom in the sulfite would neutralize its charge?

hey could you help? I'm super confused. It says that Sulfur with 3 atoms is sulfite, so why is cr2s3 called chromium(III)sulfide??

which grade is this for?i think it is for 9th, but i learnt it in 7th
It really depends on the country, even the school district. Seems more like 9 to me.
There's also some rare oxyanions of sulfur. SO 2- is thioperoxide anion, in which sulfur has the oxidation state of 0. SO2 2- is hyposulfite anion, which is unstable, decomposing into elemental sulfur and sulfite.
I've not really spent any time with these but they do look interesting!
It should've been covered why all three have the same charge while bound to different numbers of oxygen atoms, an obvious odd.
