In this video we go over the awesome new voice isolation feature inside the newly released DaVinci Resolve Studio 18.1 by Blackmagic Design
#blackmagicdesign #davinciresolve #voiceisolation
Hey Don. I think you can apply the effect on a track level from within the edit tab too, click the track and from there add the effects. You can also do it for each individual clips audio by selecting the clip and in inspector under the audio tab. (y)
Yes, you are correct! I was just getting ready to comment just that but you beat me to it...
Perfect thank you!
I love Resolve and I’ve been waiting for this update because FCPX has had it for about 6 months now. It works about the same and I often run my dialogue through FCPX dialogue isolation before bringing it back into Resolve to edit. The track leveler has also been in FCPX for 6 months. The best thing about Resolve updates is they take the best parts of FCPX & PP and combine them with their already crazy powerful tools. I go into PP once and a while to use the music remix feature… PP also does transcription which is pretty powerful. I’m hoping Resolve bites these features for their next update.
I admit having the music remix would be awesome!
Also noticed that FCP had it for a while a few days ago.
I wonder if anyone could do a comparison between FCP, Resolve and Waves Clarity :D
I'm not doing this for a living only a personal hobby, so haven't bought the studio version (yet). Any way to approach this voice isolation in the non paid version? Or in an alternative tool?
@@marksatterfield not that I know of. Think about picking up a speed editor. I believe they’re $300 right now and come with a studio license. Pretty good deal.
@@AnthonyMoreschi thank you for that! I heard a camera purchase brings with it a license, I'll check out other options. I've only made a few videos, and I can see getting into this as a hobby
WOW - that difference! Fantastic feature! Thank you for sharing!
You're welcome!
This is insane. I'm pretty new to the program and I've been blown away by the features available. This will be so useful
I agree! It's going to be very useful.
01:57 for who doesn't find the Track FX: click on the upper right corner of the mixer (ellipsis = three dots) ... into the drop-down, enable track effects.
Well, heck. I really needed this and didn't know it was in 18.1. Glad RUclips pointed me toward this video!
Glad to hear! Yeah, 18.1 came out just in time for a few weddings I'm working on. One in particular had challenging audio with lots of wind (the wedding in this video)
That's pretty amazing! Thank you for sharing! I LOVE Resolve!
You're welcome, thanks for watching!
Dynamics in premiere pro will do this same thing but give you the full range of options like how aggressively you want the effect to come in and out and what the threshold should be. It also has a hard limiter tab with the effect to smooth out the volume to make sure it doesn’t peak.
Can you do it before it crashes though?
@@JayMeds yes, I don’t crash premiere like most people do. It’s usually done by user error.
Oof 😂😂
@@Bthefilmer Same thing with Avid, but avid forces you to learn habits that are good for any software, however annoying it may be
Yeah. I've been playing with this for last couple of days with some old projects. Pretty astounding. The leveling works great in certain situations as well.
I plan on messing with the Leveling one here soon too!
It’s no Rx, but awesome to have it built into the program all the same! The issue with this kind of design is the lack of control - so yeah, under specific circumstances like wind in an open field, this could be amazing, but I can think of many more challenging situations that this will most likely fail at too - just based on experience and not actual hands on with the tool. Really love this direction though, i remember when Adobe debuted the beta of their sense AI version of this a little over a year ago. Ai can be a powerful QoL for sure :) thanks for the video!
Thanks for your comment! Yeah I can agree with that sentiment. I haven't tried it with other situations yet.
It's suprisingly good and in my experience, quite a bit more natural than the voice isolation in RX. I prefer it in FCPX for some things. Certainly has eliminated my need for a round trip to RX 95% of the time.
OMG that's huge. Thx for highlighting it in a video.
Thanks for watching!
Wow! This was a very informative video. Thanks! Just subscribed!
Thank you so much! I appreciate it.
out of all clips to choose from you choose the most personal one, nice one Don
👀
Wow that's super cool man, thanx for sharing
You're welcome!
Thanks Donovan for this, I'll uprade right away and start checking it out.
Worth it IMO!
Wow, this is good.. Thank u Blackmagic
It is! Saved me editing this wedding. Bye bye wind! 😂
Really good one, thank you
This is so good! Thanks, going to use this for sure!!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I recorded a video by the ocean with waves, this update came out when I was editing it and I tested it right after updating. It worked so well, I did a portion of the video to show the improvement it made to the audio. I posted the video on my channel, I think this may count as a somewhat extreme case use.
That's what I call removing WAVEforms. 😂😅 Ok I'll let myself out now.
@@donovankean LOL! Good one!
There is so much to do and learn in resolve... I love it 😍
Me too!
100% agreed. this one mod made my canon eos 100 into a perfectly usable vlogging camera.
That sound like a perfect use case!
I used to think the studio version of resolve was unnecessary due to how good the regular version is. This feature alone has changed me mind, I'll be sure to purchase it.
Agreed! Although another feature I can't live without is processing 10bit video.
You can add it to any clip within the edit page, I just did it in my latest project. Thank for sharing how to use it, Black Magic has done it again and that's why I love DR!!
Thanks for letting me know! I must have missed it in the edit page.
Might want to adjust that title... FCPX has had these features for some time now and I'd say they work a bit better in FCPX. In fact, so many of the best UI features in Resolve come from FCPX. If they'd only just completely copy FCPX and drop it into that edit tab, it would be the best NLE by far.
I've had some comments saying that you actually can use this effect in the Edit page, on specific clips rather than an entire audio track. I haven't been able to verify that myself though.
In terms of the title I think it still fits. This effect is built into resolve, so you don't need any plugins. I've also seen reports saying that this implementation is much better than others, because of how this AI voice isolator was trained. So it sounds more natural VS others. But again, I personally haven't verified that. I think Blackmagic's main competition is Adobe PP, which Resolve embarrasses quite often 🤷, IMO. But that's just my opinion.
@@donovankean It is not a plugin on Final Cut. It is an integrated function.
When the effect made his voice clean, I'd try recording the/a background separately and put it on a separate track to get more control over the mix vs. adjusting the slider to let in background ambience.
I would have done that, but for this specific clip I just had my camera and the Tascam DR-10L on the bride. The wind noise was too much on my camera so I couldn't use it as ambient.
@@donovankean I understand. Perhaps more for general practice/something for videographers to consider in the future.
*Edit:* Just to clarify my first comment, technically one could record "the" or "a" (similar) background for a separate, lower volume track. It's not like anyone would scrutinize it. 🙂
you should put Fairlight in your title. great video!
Maybe I'll make another video 👀 thanks for watching!
It’s a great feature. I wish I had had it 6 months ago.
One thing you might consider: did you get permission from the wedding couple to share this? I know it is your footage and work, but perhaps there is a less intimate moment of audio/video that you can use to illustrate the feature.
Yes! My contract clearly states I can use any or all of the footage for personal/business use.
@@donovankean well, your contract might state that, but did you ask? There is a difference.
And just because you can, should you?
Yeah, I know that you are covered, legally. If you shot my wedding, contract or not, I would not be comfortable with you using a segment like that.
My father had a portrait studio for 40 years. I am a video editor. From combined 60 years of working in the image business, I'd advise you to get specific permission.
I'm not trying to troll you. I don't have an interest in pressing you on this any further. You don't need to reply. I just want you to consider this privacy issue.
@@SteveRussellJuggler Thanks for the tip!
Yeah, it's a great feature, however DVR still hasn't released a silence truncate feature to eliminate the quiet when speakers have pauses. This would be another great feature.
Yes that could be a great feature!
@@donovankean It's a feature built into audacity, so no reason that it couldn't be added. Much easier if it was built into DVR, rather than switching between audacity and DVR.
I use premiere and this is so much better than anything Adobe can offer… like I use parametric eq set to vocal enhancer but it’s not as good as this
That's what I've heard! This one is supposedly VERY good, hence my video title.
You're doing it wrong though. There's separated effects for this in Audio Effects > Noise reduction/restoration folder. Some simple cases can even be handled with a couple clicks in Essential Sound window. High pass filter + Dynamics is also a powerful and simple solution sometimes, not to mention Audition if you're feeling nerdy and want actually to analyze the audio issues.
@@spunFIN I used vocal enhancer (the separate effect) sometimes but it never seemed to have the same quality as the parametric eq preset, but I’ll try that high pass thing thanks bro
@@spunFIN "Doing it wrong"? This is just ONE way of doing it. After uploading the video I found out that this effect is also in the Inspector tab. However, I did try that out, and it seemed like it didn't perform as well as just appying it to a "Voice Track". I think it's been pretty well established that this is more than just a High Pass Filter+ Dynamics. Blackmagic themselves have piblished that this uses their Neural Network to filter the noise. By my estimation, this effect is also using WAY more computing power to boot, also suggesting it's more than just a simple audio effect. I would argue this is more similar to Nvidia's Broadcast App which uses their RT Cores and Neural Network to filter out noise.
@@donovankean Well, obviously in his case it was the wrong one, but yes, surely just one of the many options Adobe offers. I agree that AI is the future of audio and graphics restoration, but it's not there yet when it comes to one-click solutions. Sure, it works in some cases, but not in many others. Broadcast is also super cool and works very well sometimes, but quite often you'd need to run some vst plugins with it to actually make your voice sound good and natural.
Sorry for sounding so harsh, got triggered by your video title. It's kinda like the same when you compare various different AI tools to Photoshops content-aware fill and then say Photoshop sucks. Or RunwayML's roto to Ae's and say Ae sucks.
thank you
You're welcome!
This helps so much!
Great to hear!
Thanks for this ! for me the Track FX tab was hidden. If you press the 3 dots on the mixer tab you will find the option to enable it if it doesn't show up by default. just tick "track effects"
Great to know! And thanks for your comment 😁
I use Resolve on every project I work on, but not quite sure why videos keep popping up about this in resolve when both Premiere and FCPX have had the same thing for years. Be careful with the Resolve one, it’s quite aggressive and will cut actual words out if you have the threshold too high.
Noted! So far with my experience it's been basically flawless. I use it on most of my voice tracks now for wedding films.
Great video!
Thank you! And thanks for watching! Much appreciated.
Loving this content!
Thank you! 🥰
now we need it for piano performances, too :D
Piano performances?? 🤣
@@donovankean well yeah - not everybody has a studio... and when rain rains or the dishwasher dishwashes ... it makes it onto the audio.... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
It also works with ambisonic audio, but it has to be in a sub timeline
🤯🤯🤯
Wow!
Wow indeed!
I have 18.1 and I cannot see that track FX section. Why?
Do you have Resolve Studio? I'm pretty sure it's exclusive the Studio
Final Cut Pro had this feature years ago, but Resolve does a much better job.
😁
They also pooped on Alex Audio Butler with this as well. Glad I upgraded last year and have lifetime updates for the studio version of resolve.
Love the one time payment model for Resolve!
@@donovankean that's one of the things that sold me on the product.
My 18.1 is very buggy. Nothing works properly. Even the stabilization stopped working...
Sorry to hear that! So far it's been treating me well.
That was awesome dindt see this or the updated features. I record ambient sounds like crickets , coyote's and owls for my rain channel. I always have to EQ the sound source because of the high noise floor, usually a high shelf and some low frequencies I'll try this ad see if this works. thanks !!
Thanks for watching, glad this helped!
This is a frustrating effect! When it works out works very well, but there are times when it can actually destroy a track and it is hard to know when it will or won't work. When it does, it is brilliant.
This is true! Although it works well for me more often than not.
Lot easier in the EDIT PG. Now if it were KEY FRAMABLE it wouldn't just a Good Tool it would be a Grate tool. There are some places/occasions you want more background and others you don't. Right now I have to cutup the Different audio tracks to change the AMOUNT Slider. Maybe DR 18.1.2
Yeah that would be awesome! I feel like blackmagic has a lot of work to do with their keybraming tools though. They're pretty clunky IMO
Thanks!
You're very welcome!
Noice!
You can hear compression artefacts at lower percentages though.
Maybe just duplicate the audio track.
Keep one audio track untouched and set the volume to -6dB or lower...
Then set the other Audio track with voice isolation at the original or higher dB.
That way you wouldn't hear compression artefacts if you still wanted the ambient noise.
My guess is what you're hearing is actually either RUclips compression or the compression from my screen recorder. When I recorded this video, the audio sounded much better to me as I was making it VS watching it back on RUclips
This is very useful information. Thanks so much
It certainly has, it’s unusable for me. When rendering the gout is always full or too many corrections. I need urgent help.
I'm sorry to hear that! I haven't run into that issue yet. I wish I had a solution for you!
@donovananderson6302 gpu that's supposed to be. No worries, thanks for the reply.
Good video thanks
Thanks for watching!
@@donovankean sure no problem 👍
I'm not doing this for a living only a personal hobby, so haven't bought the studio version (yet). Any way to approach this voice isolation in the non paid version? Or in an alternative tool?
I wish I knew! Before this I would just use the Noise Removal tool. It worked out ok, but the results never sounded as natural as this.
I am not gonna use this because i dont need to but .wtf .. this is incredible ..
Right? 🤯
Holy that's good
Right? This is a life saving feature for sure.
WOW
Whoa! 😁
Wow
Whoa
Cool feature thanks for letting us know! Ive been thinking of switching to Resolve, I just downloaded the non studio version, but it seems Im going to need to save up a bit, so I can enjoy this feature! 2 questions: 1 do you know if it's hard to switch to Resolve from Premiere? Maybe some of the skills transfer... and 2 just out of curiosity, what mic did you use to record from the bride?
Great questions! And thanks for your comment.
1. It was challenging for me to switch, but I was glad I did. To make the switch easier though, check out some of my other videos. Namely the one about remapping keys m.ruclips.net/video/3IHr-nBNmpk/видео.html
And the one adjusting how you zoom on the timeline m.ruclips.net/video/PtJsNRAbsOU/видео.html
2. I used the Tascam DR-10L. A classic. It was also the white version so it was hidden in her dress.
@@donovankean thanks so much I will watch!
Hello, does this apply to Adobe Premier Pro?
I think Adobe PP has a similar feature, but I'm not sure what it's called. Based on what I've seen though, the implementation I'm Resolve is quite a bit better.
This is amazing. It is the level of Nvidia Broadcasting or better.
Yes!
they just released version 18,1 the voice isolation had a bug..
For me it's been working very well.
It's not new in audio world, it's already accessible from different plugins (izotope, ceda...) so I guess competition is not embarased as you say, they just need to buy a 3rd party license...
Good point! Although I've heard a few people say that this particular voice isolator is superior, because of how the AI was trained. All I know is it's basically magic.
In terms of the title of my video, I was specifically referring to Adobe PP. This effect is built directly into resolve, no plugins needed. With those qualifiers, I think it does embarrass them 🤔
Just go to Inspector tab, and turn on the Voice Issolation.
🤔 I'll have to try this out, thanks!
Grassvalley Edius has this.
👀👀👀
If only they made these fx available as 3rd party fx
I've had a few people tell me about these plugins. They're great for sure! I do think this one is unique in that it's AI based, so as they train the model it will get better over time. Just my opinion though
Final Cut has this feature too. 😊
😂
Very nice! I haven't spent much time with final cut, so I'll take your word for it!
😂😂😂😂
Yes, it was introduced to FCPX seven months ago, but not sure if it's as good as Davincis voice isolation
ruclips.net/video/dFyDTqeQnlc/видео.html
This is actually available in the free version too
This is what some are saying! I've heard conflicting reports so I'm not actually sure anymore. Maybe I'll make a follow-up video about it
@@donovankean I have the free version and I use it.
how to enable it then? the "dial lev" is available but not the "voice iso".
Make it more compatible with 5.1 & 7.1 Surround too.
I don't much work with 5.1 and 7.1, so I'm not sure how 🤔
@@donovankean That's the only Reason to USE DAVINCI RESOLVE ther so many other editors much easier to edit video with. Few do Surround and DAVINCI also has DOLBY ATMOS. You know 50% of Video is audio. With Surround it's more like 75% is audio. Dolby Digital might bring it close to 90%
.
@@HoundDogMech Makes sense! Although I think editing in Resolve is pretty easy, personally. Plus I know many people love Resolve for it's color tools (myself included)
Easily do this in logic with better results. But I guess it’s decent
👀👀👀
You should change the title. Those who use various software, and not just one, know that this function does not embarrass anyone because there are those who do better. FCXP also has this function integrated for six months and - in my opinion that I use them both - it works better, it is better integrated and not by problems such as DVR.
Your channel is young, you should avoid titles of this type because you get great visibility once ... but then you lose credibility.
Thanks for the tip. I think I'll keep it, though. So far as I've been using the plugin, it has performed just as good or better in some cases VS other solutions. (Based on video research) it can be hard to convey the quality through RUclips compression though. The title doesn't hurt my credibility, it's designed to grab your attention and drive views. Is it a little over the top? Yeah. But is it genuine? Also yes. The overall point of the video is to help others use Resolve well. I feel it accomplished that propose. But I appreciate your comment anyway. Ironically your comment actually helps the video perform but that's none of my business.... 🤔😂
Does anyone know if this works on the free version?
I don't think so. Everything I've read says it's only in the studio version.
Uncanny!
👀
broo I need automatic subtitles captions
That's be nice for sure! Subtitles take forever...
2.42 expression is pricless
🤣👀
This is not new. FinalCut X had this feature. I have been using this feature In FCPX.
It's new to Resolve and produces one of the best results I've ever heard 🤷
“Embarrassed their competition”? Hardly, FCPX has had this for quite a while… I’m doubt they’re feeling very “embarrassed”…
Maybe, but it just works so well and sounds so natural. Other programs and plugins tend to produce a more robotic sounding result.
@@donovankean But it seems to me that you don't use FCXP, so how do you say it works better on DVR? I use them both and in my opinion it works much better on FCXP.
This was an embarrassment for Resolve to not have! I’m teaching both Premiere Pro & Rush and FCP to beginners and FCPX had “clarity” and “noise reduction” each 1click available on all audio since ca 10 years.
Then Premiere had a good look at that and copied it into their “Essential Sound” Panel about 3-4years ago and then added “Reverb reduction” ca 1-2 years ago which reduces room noise. So then about 0,5-1year ago Final Cut finally got an update after 10years and now FCP has a A.I. powered “voice isolation” slider …. This has been an ongoing battle which Premiere had won and they even added all of that into the beginner friendly Premiere Rush (looks kind like the cut page in Resolve)…. All the while Resolve had NOTHING. Compressors, de-esser and rudimentary noise reduction did nothing like this and are not easy for beginners to learn. So the lack of this was the NO.1 REASON for me to not recommend Resolve to beginners. As many Film on a smartphone without microphone and couldn’t rescue the sound in Resolve. Now they can. This feature is awesome. But your click-bait title of this video deserves a history lesson. ;)
This is a fair point, but from what I've gathered Resolve does it a bit better!
@@donovankean That I don't know and there's always that one Waves plugin to isolate voices... but it is just great to have really usable stuff built in. I thought this was in all versions of Resolve but is it just in the paid version?
@@tobiaslofi I've seen conflicting reports on this. Same outlets say that it's only in the Studio version, and others don't specify. I'm interested to find out for sure, though. Maybe I'll make a follow-up video going over my favorite Studio features, and confirm it then.
Premiere's feature isn't that good to be honest, but I agree with the sentiment that it took quite some time for Resolve to add this feature. That being said, we have to keep in mind that Resolve is just a baby compared to Premiere and FCPX so for me is not that much of an embarrassment for Resolve. It's like comparing Affinity Suite features to those from Adobe, they don't have the same years on the market so missing features are to be expected.
@@torinux4980 true. Premiere’s noice canceling features aren’t as good as this. And there’s always that “Waves noise canceling plug-in” that could be used in all DAWs/NLEs that support VSTs however I wasn’t talking about pro editor users but beginners coming from smartphones and e.g. TikTok’s build in mini editor has “noise canceling/voice isolation” that is good enough with one click. And Resolve had nothing usable - why as a in-house designer/ journalist who now also has to make videos do you have to convince your boss to shell out thousands of $$ for cameras lights lenses mics and editing software (and plug-ins) when Tiktok on a smartphone makes it free and good enough? For this type of audience/usergroup (which is my main course audience) it’s a very hard sell. So most currently try Premiere Pro and Rush because “it’s what your supposed to be using” and it comes included “with Photoshop subscription”…. But often Resolves cut page with a bit of Fairlight and color would be enough/easier/better.
I have 2 5.1 Surround systems, Computer Speakers & 7.1 Surround Headphones. And soon a Dolby Atmos System. The Video is only 25% of a good Video today. Mute the sound and prove it to your self. One of these days U-Tubby will catch up I hope, and out put more than Just Stereo..
Makes sense!
Why is everyone so impressed with this? Is just an EQ and a gate.
To my knowledge it actually isn't. This uses a neural network trained on human voices to isolate the voice 😂
@@donovankean It is just an eq and a gate, that's why the voice sounds strange after the program finds the frequencies to separate the human voice and gates it. If you really want to know what goes under the hood, take a look at Steinberg spectra layers that have been around for a while and is far more advanced.
@@Morpheus170 I'm quoting BlackMagic directly, so don't take my word for it.
"For audio, DaVinci Resolve Studio 18.1 adds new AI based voice isolation track FX so you can remove loud, undesirable sounds from voice recordings. By adding DaVinci Neural Engine enabled voice isolation to the cut, edit and Fairlight pages using a new DaVinci Neural Engine AI based core effects process, you can isolate dialog from background sounds in a recording, eliminating everything else from moderate noise to aircraft and explosions leaving only the voice. Voice isolation is perfect for interviews and dialogue recordings from noisy locations."
@@donovankean Yes, I understand, but this is nothing you can't do with eq and a gate. That's all I am saying.
@@Morpheus170 I disagree. This is probably more akin to Nvidia's broadcast app which has AI noise removal. Which, if I were to guess, actually does some reconstructing of the voice based on what it thinks it should sound like.
Is be interested to see the model these were trained on though, as I'm just speculating.
see you in the next video? hmm
🤔
18.1 is incredibly unstable. Crash crash crash crash crash crash not worth it right now.
That's too bad! I've had really good luck with it.
Is this a paid feature?
I believe so. Everywhere I've looked Blackmagic states that it's a feature for "DaVinci Resolve Studio"
I used voice isolation on one of my videos. It saved the audio I was going to do a voiceover but it came out really usable. There was a LOT of wind noise
See the video below.

Very nice!
this is nothing new! I have an old editing system and I have plug-ins that can do that. all BMD has done is have it part of their system without YOU buying a plugin. to say BMD has embarrassed their competition is BANANAS!
It's new to Resolve, and in my opinion sounds the best compared to the competition. Hence the title!
@@donovankean it not the best... it's good but there are better ones like Clarity Vx pro.

Yo pienso que suena muy buena! Pero solo mi opinion 🤷
these AI things are pretty good... but sad that they kill raw skills
That's a good point! I was never very good at audio processing though, so this is great for me as someone who doesn't really want to spend the time and effort to become an audio engineer.
