Well done. I like this system. I built one to raise a 25' mast alone - failed! It was a rotating hoist that the bottom 6' of the mast rested in but the problem was that all of the power was low on the mast and it couldn't, even with pullies (or my full 270 lb body weight pushing down on the end of the hoist) lift that long mast (even though it's very light to carry around one-handed if held in the middle). So now rethinking it and then this popped up the next morning. This is the best one I've seen for what I need - you have the gin pole (if that's the right term) pulling on a point much higher up on the mast). So going to steal your idea. Any chance you have any more detailed pics? (Such as how you have the gin pole attached to the deck and how it is supported?) Thanks!
I started farming and the poor sail boat sits lonely. I still have all the stuff. I was looking at a tripod lift I made for the motor. It worked but kind of troublesome. As I recall the mast lifter did work well. The mast isn't light either. Takes two guys to carry it around - I usually don't have help though. Maybe I moved it one end at a time. I'm pretty sure I couldn't pick it up and carry it. It's hanging in the barn. Stretches half the lenght of the barn. I do have a dream of sailing in lake michigan some day. i need a new motor and a bigger truck. ha ha
@@BhodieBob - your setup simply needs some lateral (port/starboard) support. It should rotate about the same level as the mast step pin. Otherwise, your setup is very similar to the many successful mast stepping/unstepping setups on RUclips and similar to what I use on my Capri 22 - a similar sized boat to yours. Just to make a point, I have raised and lowered the Capri 22 mast by myself without anything else by just "hefting" it up and down. At 72, I know best to use my gin pole (whisker pole) and bridle along with moving the sheet blocking to the bow. A simple a-frame setup at the mast step area would be a simple solution in the same thoughts as your motor tripod.
It's been so long since I did this I don't even remember. I especially don't remember the way the rope runs through two places on the gin pole. I am doing farming now and I have to raise and lower my cycle mower 7 foot long steel cutting bar. It's kind of heavy but I can't figure out a way to provide a mechanical assist. At least not a simple way.
If the rope didn't tangle on the winch it would have worked pretty good. Even did it on a windy day and it didn't go sideways. Thanks for the vid.
