  • Ahoy! In this video Jack the Salty Dog and I solo sailour 1983 Cape Dory 28 around Santa Catalina Island, exploring new anchorages. We cruise the East end of the island near Avalon and coast along the backside of Catalina, anchoring at Catalina "Cat" Harbor at the isthmus of Two Harbors. We then haul up anchor and hook around the West End, passing Parsons Landing and Isthmus Cove, before anchoring at Cabrillo Beach. We show how we use the self-tacking jib, a.k.a a club-footed jib to tack with ease while single handed sailing. During our exploration, we also saw the following birds and wildlife:
    Common Dolphin (Delphinus capensis)
    www.orangecountyoutdoors.com/...
    American Kestrel (Falco sparverius)

    Brown Pelican (Pelecanus occidentalis)

G'day from OZ, an old salt myself, owner of a 32 ft Cavalier circa 1975. I subbed to your channel after James from Tritea gave you a shout out on one of his earlier posts. Enjoying your adventures, you seem to be very passionate about sailing, nature and you love your dog Jack, thats good enough for me. Keep on posting and I'll keep watching, Cheers 👍🐶⛵🍺

You may want to ease the jib sheet a bit, and tighten up the mainsail sheet a little. I had a boat with a self tacking jib and really liked it. I want to visit Catalina Island this summer in my small trailerable cruiser.

I'll be living vicariously through your Catalina trips for awhile. Not sure if I can squeeze another trip in before heading South.

Loving your channel! Thanks for all the landmarks and flora/fauna info.
Makes me a bit anxious seeing a singlehander with no life jacket or harness off shore...
    Keep up the good work!
    Good boy Jack!

I really enjoy the bits of information regarding the wildlife and geography of the island. I’ve lived in SoCal for my entire life (51 years) and I’ve only been to Santa Catalina island only a handful of times. That’s going to hopefully change shortly with the purchase of our 41’ power boat.

I calculated about 1 mile from Airport in the sky to Goat Harbor. The roadway above Goat Harbor leading to the airport is probably quite a bit closer. Looks like it would be a bit rugged and I see no established trail but i'm sure it's been done. I can just see old Doug Bombard treking around there eons ago.

Do you use or recommend a specific cruising guide for the Catalina anchorages? Love the content!

Yes, Anchoring Catalina: No Moorings? No Problem! By Marc Hughston.

Also, stay tuned for a cruising guide by James Frederick’s (@james.the.sailor.man on IG) cruising guide coming out soon. If you don’t already, check out his channel Sailing Triteia . He currently made the passage to Hawaii.
