This is exactly the kick synth I was looking for. I also use Intelligent Wire's NIRGUNA, a dedicated PsyBass synth. I think these two have a great affinity when it comes to PSY Trance's groove production.
Great video and great plugin. And thanks a lot for letting us all know about it :) I struggled as well with a few things, especially zooming. Right click and drag will zoom in/out. There is a toggle next to the EQ label which hides the EQ curve when disabled. It also disables the EQ unfortunately... But in gain mode you will see an icon on the bottom right which allows you to disable the spectrum at least. With the buttons below the wave export you can en/disable a few other gui elements which helps to declutter the interface further. If you go to presets (top left) -> settings you can save the current configuration as initial state so you won't have to bother every single time. Drag and drop is not a thing right now, but I managed in Bitwig at least to paste the sample (cmd/ctrl + V) at the playhead position.
yeah I feel like there are a few extra features this plugin needs but the main environment makes it already easy to work in. I'll keep an eye out for future updates!
I think that if you also open the explorer window in elevated mode (meaning with administrator access) you will be able to drag and drop the wav-file from the explorer window into Ableton running in admin mode. The reason for this not working as it is now, is because the two processes are running in different user context and it is a security measure not having the two processes to be able to interact with each other.
@@Projektor_music No, I think not. But, if the plugin is set to default export its wav-files to the desktop, you could always add a link to that folder in Ableton I think. That way you can access the desktop-folder using the process Ableton runs in, which means that you should be able to drag and drop files from that folder into the project.
Why does the phase matter if the kick is finished before the bass starts? Am I missing something or was that not what you were saying about hitek 1/16 and other 1/8?
generally the phase doesn't matter in that case. Although broadly in psytrance the kick & bas sdo play on top or each other and I've even seen it in hi-tech. Some people will argue that having the kick & bass in phase even when they don't overlap creates a kidn of glueing effect between the subs of the kick & bass. I've had success with this and also had situations in which it did not matter or made a bad bassline but some people do find success with doing this.
I've never used that one so I can't say much about it. What I do know is that this plugin has some particular features that make it work very well for psytrance so at 50 euro it's definitly a plugin worth picking up, even if you already have a kick plugin!
The GUI is very distracting but the feature set is nice, especially the “EQ” and phase tools and the price is nice too. I’m relying heavily on the Scorb kicks from Futurephonic so Kick2 will always be part of my toolbox, however I hope some healthy competition will encourage Sonic Academy to update Kick2, to include phase rotation at the very least.

I think it is really really cool but I think you can not arrange the transient of the kick with this one. Like which click / noise sound to be used unlike Kick 2.
I finally got around to trying this and the linear graph is a huge turnoff. All of the character and finetuning of a psy kick is at the front end and you have to zoom right in. Imo you might as well use any soft synth with an MSEG that you already have. Kick 2 is king for kicks because the log scale time axis gives more editing real estate to the critical front end. Saved myself 22e though so it’s not all bad 😅
@@Projektor_music nope. Log scale or gtfo, for me personally. That’s a level of tedium I’m not prepared to put with up. I can achieve a good enough phase alignment with subtle changes to the overall length in Kick 2 or by using PHA-979 and even though it’s a compromise it’s way less annoying than having to constantly zoom and in and out for basic editing, of which there is a lot of when making and tweaking a kick.

@@Projektor_music Well, restricting creativity in the sake of technical perfection isn't really recommended either :) More over since there are phase rotation tools that can help you realign your phase once processed. One great tool is the PHA-979 by Voxengo.
@@alexyakas the kind of processing you want to do any creative stuff I reccomend not doing it with the kick (apart from filter transitions, kick rolls and mixing stuff, but I have addressed how to make sure the kick still works wel in terms of phase rotation in all of those regards.) Moreover, a tool like you mentioned can solve an issue, but also introduce new issues. The point of this plugin instead is that you don't have to resolve to those tools as it is build into the instrument...
@@Projektor_music Obviously you're free to do whatever you want but your approach is completely wrong in my opinion. Music comes first. Work on your sound. Sound design your kick and bass so they reflect your vision. Any problems present later, can always be fixed in pre-mix session. By the way, you write "apart from filter transitions, kick rolls and mixing stuff". EQ, Saturation / Distortion and Multiband processing are mainly mixing tools and they phase shift your signal big time, how come you mention these as "apart from..." When you sound design the kick and bass you will at some point phase align them as much as possible, what's the difference doing that form the beginning than rendering the kick applying processing and then realign the phase with the bass? 😂
@@alexyakas "but I have addressed how to make sure the kick still works wel in terms of phase rotation in all of those regards." there is a massive part behind it that which is important. You need to use the tools correctly. BTW saturation/distortion doesn't shift phase, filters do. Maybe your distortion/saturation comes with a high pass filter build in (this is quite common). The reason why I say you should allign the kick & stick with it is because it allows you to focus on that what actually matters: the musical idea! the kick & bass have to work from a technical perspective so I suggest getting those out of the way quickly, while maintaining flexibility, which I believe this plugin does. That way you can spend more time on the parts where you can actually be creative!
@@BappinProductions yes, controlling the envelope can be a bit tricky at times but i still like the sound that comes out in the end. nice, clean sounding kick drums, perfect for old school type psytrance
Just a noob/hobby producer here. But i already thought about why they did not put some of that features in kick2. Especially the automatic snapping to time grid function and that the wave follows the amp curve. Too bad i just bought kick2😂
I would trade the layers for the always in phase issue any day!!! Kick2 is still amazing for snares and a alot of other stuff. You can even do psytrance basses with Kick2 so its not going in the bin anytime soon :)
@xgmode you can just add a hat on another track and mix it in, or even trigger a sampler with a hat from the same midi if needed, it's not the important part. The whole phase allignment issue being taken care of in the kick is much more of a time saver IMO
@@Projektor_music Indeed, the phase alignment in Kickdrum is much easier. I would argue that it isn't that hard to do in Kick2, the transient and body can be locked in place. It's the tail which require some work to align, but it isn't that bad. Look at this video to see how locking works in Kick2: How to Reverse Engineer a Kick Drum - Kick 2 Sonic Academy
my only gripe is you can't import clicks/transients-- add this and its def will be the best kick plugin in the history of EDM..it sucks you have to guess your kick length on kick2 ...so dumb. They need to make the interface like shaperbox - same colors, similar , and transient shaping with just draggin in and not worrying about phase.
Honestly I don't see the value in that. I like to have the transients seperated on it's own channel anyway if I even need them... I do only make psytrance so maybe for other genres it's more needed...
yes a 399 dollar discontinued product which needs another few hundred bucks to even be usable beats a 22 buck plugin. I think they are uncomparable my friend... But I'm sure it is a great module...
For psytrance? No way, software gives you so much more control the two can’t even be compared and I have 5k of Eurorack myself and Bas is on my wish list
i you doesn't know how to design a kick with kick 2 if you know, it doesnt need add eq or saturator that will change the phase if you will do that a terrible mistake of a beginner producer
Unpopular opinion: In key kicks are contrary to the whole idea of a kickdrum. It doesn't make them sound good or make them better to phase allign with a bass. I think they sound quite horrible tbh.
@@Projektor_music You don't need to have the kick and bass on the same pitch to phase allign them. If the kick has a liitle pitch envelope beyond the transient it will punch through much better and there's still plenty of room to adjust the phase. The phase will never be 100% perfect anyway so there's no need to worry too much about it. If you're making anything but a single pitch bassline there will be pretty bad phase shift on any other note than the one you've adjusted you kick & bass phase to. It's just a matter of keeping it in check and keeping a clean headroom nothing more. But, then I'm also not producing "pure" psytrance and only using these kinds of basses for some parts with lots of pitch changes.
@@leonordmann yeah in psytrance this kick & bass allignment is indeed done in a more tight manner and all the things you said don't really apply to psytrance (of course the main idea is the heardoom so there is wiggle room) but having the kick & bass in the same key is a neccesaty for propper phase allignment.

EQ, Saturation / Distortion and Multiband processing are mainly mixing tools and they phase shift your signal big time, how come you mention these as "apart from..."
When you sound design the kick and bass you will at some point phase align them as much as possible, what's the difference doing that form the beginning than rendering the kick applying processing and then realign the phase with the bass?
That way you can spend more time on the parts where you can actually be creative!
with the latest update it has archieved "godmode"
Haven't seen the latest beta yet, but I will once I'm back from vacation!
What about BazzISM2? It’s a bit old but the results are great for psytrance
never really used it so I can't say. it will probably work well for more old school stuff though
Bazzism has a nice character but the editing is bloody awful, like throw your computer out of the window awful 😂
@@BappinProductions yes, controlling the envelope can be a bit tricky at times but i still like the sound that comes out in the end. nice, clean sounding kick drums, perfect for old school type psytrance
hi nice plugin tip , did u try "Chop Suey" from Sinee / Dawsome?
no I haven't. TBH I don't really test a lot of plugins just like this, I have very little time!
Which DAW do you use?
this is Ableton with the arfal dark+ skin on it
support
thanks!
Nice 👍
Thanks ✌
much more useful than kick 2
Most definitely!
Just a noob/hobby producer here. But i already thought about why they did not put some of that features in kick2. Especially the automatic snapping to time grid function and that the wave follows the amp curve. Too bad i just bought kick2😂
i mean why not both?
@@Projektor_music ok for that price i'll give it a go. That's probably less than some hobby drummers pay for drum gloves 🤣
@@Bobbycartuner yeah now that's on sale it's a no brainer IMO
@@Bobbycartuner ex drummer here and 20 years ago I was spending way more than the equivalent of 22e for extra drums, cymbals and other accessories :D
No it's not, it lacks sample layers etc. The kick2 killer is psylab pro (combine it with PSYPHAZ PRO for even more manipulation).
Yeah, I also find the layering feature in kick2 obsolete.
@@MagnatusPrime I mean it's useful, but there are easy ways around not having it...
22 euros. Is Audija some kind of Santa?
Maybe, do we know what he looks like? No, think about it!
nobody's ever seen them both in the same room at the same time
amazing, but they need a UX designer.
yeah I would agree on that...
my only gripe is you can't import clicks/transients-- add this and its def will be the best kick plugin in the history of EDM..it sucks you have to guess your kick length on kick2 ...so dumb.
Just enable legends for the nodes then you know exact time and frequency (pitch env) and gain (amp) if every node, no guessing needed!
Punchbox gang
hard to get out anything else then psy trance kicks lol
sounds like a skill issue bro... especially with how V2 is looking now...
Bassilimus Iteritas Alta is Best for Kick
yes a 399 dollar discontinued product which needs another few hundred bucks to even be usable beats a 22 buck plugin. I think they are uncomparable my friend... But I'm sure it is a great module...
Why?
For psytrance? No way, software gives you so much more control the two can’t even be compared and I have 5k of Eurorack myself and Bas is on my wish list
i you doesn't know how to design a kick with kick 2 if you know, it doesnt need add eq or saturator that will change the phase if you will do that a terrible mistake of a beginner producer
i do know how to design kicks. have done so many times with many different methods & I can say this plugin is one of the best ways to do it...
No, it’s not.
ok...
Awful GUI. But at least it follow up share unlike kick 2.
it's clutterd but I like it. definitly can use some tweaking & some more options...
God you´re rambling, this could be a 5 minute video. Plugin is awesome tho
yet you found the time to leave a comment. positivity champ ;)
Ok
Unpopular opinion:
In key kicks are contrary to the whole idea of a kickdrum. It doesn't make them sound good or make them better to phase allign with a bass. I think they sound quite horrible tbh.
ok, I find that it helps massively but the tone has to come first if that is what you mean...
@@leonordmann judging by how your music sounds, you clearly have no idea what your talking about m8.
@@Yahyaa2009 dude my last release on this account was 4 years ago lmao.
