I adopted two brothers at three weeks old. They lived happily together until one died at age four. The other is six now and still going strong. He is VERY outgoing and vocal and has been since day one.

Oh my goodness, I am reading all these comments and when i was going to get guinea pigs, there was negative on girls and positive on boys. I then saw my Harriet, a skinny pig and I have to say she is the most playful, outgoing independent guinea pig. She is my heart!

I wish more people saw the value in male guinea pigs. They really don't get adopted as often. You bring up an interesting point about boys being outgoing. Maybe that's why I'm more drawn to male guinea pigs. Boy pigs have a Lot to offer. I have two boys and I LOVE them to death. Boy pigs love to connect to their humans more than anything. Boy guinea pigs make great pets too,💯💕💕🐹🐹

I read somewhere that only like 20% of boars actually bond/ remain bonded… I hope that’s not true! However I’m a lucky one, I have two boars that love each other tremendously and only bicker occasionally 🥰💜🐹 My boys are about 2 1/2 years old. I think the most important thing to have happy male guinea pigs just giving them enough space. My C&C cage is 6 x 2 so they have plenty of room! (27” x 82”)

I have 5 girls. NONE of them let me let them. They glare at me, teeth chatter, & run away.
I have 5 boars. 2 in a bonded pair. 3 lone bc they’re all wanting to be #1
ALL my boys love attention. I have 1 super tame boy who even “asks” to be picked up. He loves going to the pet store (he will bang the top of the carrier so he can get out & get attention from everyone at the store).

I have a pair of girls who are skittish by nature
I have a boy/girl pair where the male is neutered and the girl in that pair is so much more chill and happy to be handled.
I think female guinea pigs feel safe with a boar and i noticed males tend to try and protect the girls.

Or get both male and female as long both are fixed.

All males in a cage or all females - both will sometimes fight. The many years I have with guinea piggies - oh man ! Females seem worse for the tendency to bully one member. I had one female that once fully grown, bullied her mother TERRIBLE and even ripped all her fur out.

Oh my 😢 that sounds like an awful experience! It's unfortunate but some cuties simply cannot be bonded. Thanks for sharing your insight. 💚
