I just went through the whole series for the first time a few months ago. The Vickers character isn’t awful, but the timing of it is. At the ending of the song, I was like “You have 7 seasons with all these great characters and a great moment and you shoehorn Will Ferrell in there?”

I've always thought that promoting Jim would've made the most sense. He had experience as co-manager and at this point of the show, he was more ambitious and wanted to advance himself. This could've reignited the conflict between him and Dwight and if the writer's felt inclined, they could've added a new character to be Jim's replacement as a salesman. I think this could've led nicely into Jim's conflict with wanting to chase his dream (the AthLete arc) but feeling the pressure to stay in his stable manager position for the sake of his family. You could take that scene in which David Wallace talks to Jim about Dwight near the end of the series and make it Jim telling Wallace his intent to leave to pursue other endeavors and recommend Dwight to take his place. This would tie into the improvements to their relationship we saw take place as the series drew to a close. It also (and perhaps most importantly) gotten rid of Andy as manager and all the flux that occurred with that

They wanted Andy as manager because it was safe. He’s basically the same, dumb, insecure, desperate to be liked character as Michael, and it didn’t hurt that Ed Helms was easily the most bankable star left on the show. I can definitely see why they went with Andy, but it’s easily the least interesting thing they could have done.

@@elijahfordsidioticvarietys8770 Andy is not the same character as Michael at all. Andy as he is written earlier in the show is obnoxious, competitive, self-entitled and manipulative. They completely change the character around when he get the manager role in order to shoehorn him in as Michael Scott 2.0 and it just feels really off and bad imo when you actually pay attention to who the character was before.

Solid pitch. Athlead could've worked in that context more honestly. And it wouldn't have screwed up the dynamics as badly as Season 9 did.

I 100% agree with your ending statement. Watching the show again it's so apparent the shift in tone and writing for the show the second Micheal leaves. They definitely had something going with the season 7 finale, giving them a lot of room to decide what to do for season 8, it's just unfortunate it didn't turn out just as well as it could of, but it's understandable that choosing the direction the Office was going to go in would be a huge undertaking

I thought the minute count was how many actual minutes of life since he joined, not the number of minutes he spent in the office. If you take that into consideration, the number of minutes adds up.

Fun Fact: It was Nick DiPaolo who gave Seinfeld the punchline of you'd rather be in the casket than be giving the eulogy. Seinfeld had a different punchline when he was working on that joke but it was the same set up and Nick was working at the same club one night and gave that line to him and Jerry instantly said "Yes. That is it."

I agree with you about Deangelo and Will Ferrell.
I think if there had been a fan poll to choose the next manager,Dwight would have been chosen. Episodes would have become increasingly absurd and they would have lost viewers.
Although I actually like Andy as manager, you’re idea of having no manager at all is a really interesting idea.

  • @kimsomniac2144

I have always want Daryl to have gotten the manager position. I feel like there would have been a lot for the writers to work with. He could have slowly realised the job was hard, while gaining sympathy and respect for Michael. Jim and Dwight could have been his sounding boards, it think it would have worked. Tying to put Ed Helm's into a Steve Carell mold was just too much of an ask. I feel for him. He seems like nice guy who's character got messed with too much. Andy does have some of my favorite lines (quotes) from the show, he made me get watery eyes more than once, but I don't feel like the Nard dog was anyone's favorite. I can't judge though...I adore Pam, she's the rock of the office. I know I'm in the minority, it's fine.

I understand that DeAngelo was always meant to be temporary and I would argue that he’s supposed to be written as not quite a good fit given his temporary-ness, and I’m actually ok with what they do with the character for this mini arc, but he probably got a litttle too much screen time in this one. I still really really enjoy this episode

  • @ronaldbanks-mw2ou

Now that I'm thinking about it, John C. Reily would have been a good fit or trust me The Short Guy that hung out with Ryan in New York. He was almost a dwarf and Dwight thought he was a Hobit or a midevil warlord of sorts, with special powers.

Also add in the fact that NOBODY is happy that they get to go to this thing and thats also with them getting off early. Michael normally closes the branch early for the dumbest stuff. I don't see why thus wouldn't be another reason

Hey Mulverine, I've been meaning to get my friend into The Office, and I was just wondering: What episode would work best as an introduction to the series for a newcomer? I don't want it to be anything from season 1, since that's pretty disconnected from the rest of the show tone-wise and IMO doesn't do a good job at representing it. I thought of Stress Relief, but I would much rather prefer an episode that doesn't spoil Jim and Pam's relationship, something that would then be built up for 5 seasons after they start watching the series for real. Thoughts?

Honestly any person that would get through season 1 can watch the office. It does set up the show well and I grit my teeth through it and I've watched it probably more than 20 times as a whole series. They've gotta get through the season

Mulverine himself said that his first episode was Beach Games, and that it provided a great and funny window into everyone’s character and plot(stated in his Beach Games Field Guide). My personal recommendation would be to start with season two, episode one or episode two. Season one is just… so rough to get through and honestly doesn’t encourage further watching imo.

Such a mixed bag. Vickers still sucks, Toby's nom is too mean and complacent by this point and the Dwight drama feels contrived. Some of the noms, the cold open and the song are just amazing, exactly what you want from this kind of show and timeframe. It's not Troy's good bye but its fine.
