What do you think of the EOS R5 in 2023? Do you own it or are you looking to buy one? Let me know in the comments. You can find all my R5 content on my blog: www.vaskoobscura.com/blog/category/EOS+R5
Im thinking about buying the R5. Are all the bugs worked out like overheating, short battery life and sd card issues that some people were complaining about? If you are mainly a stills shooter and the 5d mark 4 is working fine, is there a reason to upgrade? My main hesitaion is expense of the RF lenses.
Why “in 2023?” This camera is so new and is the most recent version of the R5 line. Pretty soon people are going to release videos called “should you by the [insert camera name] in June?!” about a camera that dropped in March🤣
The reason for this is to know if there are better cameras out there at the moment for the price, especially for the price and considering the fact that the r5 mkii is coming out soon, it’s not that the R5 is an old or a bad camera, tbh the r5 will still be an amazing camera in the next 5 years. But it might be reasonable for some people to wait for the mkii. Especially with features like the new hot shoe, no record limit, dedicated photo and video button and the list goes on. Now these features may be useful for some people, everyone to be honest, but it may not be that important for some people to wait for the mk ii especially considering the fact that the camera might be a bit more expensive.
I used to own the 5DmkIII and I totally hear you. The R5 is a huge jump forward in quality. Glad you're loving the new camera. If you shoot photo and video I recommend this video: EOS R5 How to Switch Between Photo and Video Modes Fast ruclips.net/video/U-wcgIa7Vg0/видео.html
I also just updated to the R5 from a 5DIII. I have a lot of EF lenses (50 1.2 L, 85 1.2 L, 24-105 f4 L, 70-300 DO, 35 1.8), and several flashes, and was glad to be able to use them. Got an RF 24-240 and 14-35 f4 for travel/landscape. What an absolutely amazing upgrade. I was planning to wait for the R5II but have a trip coming up. I feel like I got into a flagship camera that is beyond what I need. I was excited to get 45mp images and have not been disappointed. Got in at $500 off and a free grip so I feel like I got good value for money and am happier with the older EF lenses and their ability to focus. My one concern is that the R5 has the older style hot shoe. That actually works for me now (I have 3 600 RT flashes and the E3-RT transmitter), but in a few years I might have issues because the R5 hot shoe isn't supported anymore.
Congrats on the new camera. As a former 5DIII owner myself the R5 is a huge upgrade in image quality. I wouldn't worry too much about the new hot shoe there aren't many accessories that take advantage of that new shoe.
@@alexbillian2846 I still use the 24-105 f4 as my “normal” lens for general photography. The results have been great. I like the constant f4. I have been surprised at the sharpness of the 24-240. I am using it as a general travel lens, and did some flower closeups (not macro) with it. I am very pleased, though I wish it were faster.
Are you getting cropped images still when you use an EF lens on your R5? If so, what are your thoughts on that? Thinking of making the jump, but I have EF glass, and (as we know), lenses cost all of the monies. :)
@@marcuszellous5934 I don't notice cropping at all on EF lenses with the adapter. I could be wrong, but I don't think that's an issue. Just got back from a vacation to Norway - just used the RF 24-240, RF 100-400, and RF 14-35 - images are great. Very happy as I'm starting to go through them.
Just found your channel and subscribed after listening for a few minutes. This video touched on key points for me. I bought my EOS R5 a few months ago. Landscapes near, mid and long range. Also looked through some of your other vids to review soon. Thank you excellent work.
Thank you so much for the comment and welcome to the channel. Really appreciate that you're here and part of this growing community. Congrats on the new camera by the way. The R5 is amazing.
I bought the canon 7d mk2 when it was first released and still use it. I bought the canon r5 last year and can see this camera lasting me a good ten years as it does exactly what I want it to do. Video is of a low secondary interest to me as I am more inclined to photography. The r5 is awesome as far as I am concerned.
Oh ya if video isn't a consideration than the R5 is basically the perfect camera. The photos it can create are incredible. Thank you for the comment. Enjoy using the R5 till 2033. :)
I'm shooting field sports with a 7D mkii. Its great. Low ISO IQ and the AF performance is superb. I use a 1DX ii for low light indoor sports, but now purchased a R6 ii, which is the best of all worlds with its 1.6 x crop mode (we shoot jpg for print sales), and superb IQ and high ISO performance when you need it. My 7D ii must be at around 400k on the shutter count and it still chugs along.
Before buying my R5 some months ago, your videos were really useful and I thank you again ! Now that I had it in the studio for some months, I agree with all your points specially regarding photos I have never had this pleasure to shoot coupled with this amazing increase in quality. Regarding video, even though the image quality is outstanding, the overheating is still an issue, and when you are a pro you cant play with that. I will get soon the atomos V or V+ to bypass this issue, otherwise I am afraid I could switch to sony ( I really dont want)
I currently use a 5D MkIII and have a lot of EF L series lenses, which has made me reluctant to move to mirrorless due to the changed lens mount (Canon has a track record for this - anyone remember their FD lenses from 35mm film days?) Anyway, I have reached the point where I want to upgrade from my 5DII, and was steadfastly looking at a 5D IV. However, recognising the future is mirrorless, I finally made the jump and have just ordered an EOS R5 with adapter. Yes, I realise it is a few years old at this point, and likely to be superceded in the not too distant future, but the R5 is several steps ahead of my 5D III so I am glad to hear that it is still very much a force to be reckoned with in the current camera market.
Hopefully you're loving your new camera. I also have a good collection of EF L lenses and to be honest they work perfectly on the new R system bodies. I haven't noticed any difference in AF performance from DSLR to Mirrorless. To be perfectly honest there is no reason to upgrade your glass if you don't want to. You can even setup your R5 to work like a DSLR if you like the focus and recompose method. But to be honest once you get used to using eye tracking you'll be wondering how you ever got along without it. Thanks for the comment and welcome to the channel if you're new here. I would assume that the R5 (and the long expected R1 flagship) will be released in Q1 of 2024! Keep in mind that both cameras will be used at the olympic games in Paris 2024. Canon won't release those cameras too short before this date! And IMHO if I'd like to buy an R5 I would wait until the R5 II comes out! 😇
That point totally makes sense. I don't think Canon would release the R1 after the Olympic games. Also waiting till after the R5 II comes out to buy an R5 would be a smart play. That's when you'll get best value for money. Thanks for the comment.
Absolutely love my R5, but I agree. Make sure you invest in good lenses, especially the RF L line. For example, I love my RF 35mm 2.8 on my R6 (20MP), but on my R5, it is just so disappointing on sharpness. Can't wait for them to bring out an L version of it!
Congratulations on your new camera :) The R5 is amazing I'm sure you're going to love using it. 1. The first thing you should do is update your firmware so you have the latest autofocus settings available ruclips.net/video/nTIBStNHLBY/видео.html 2. Setup your menu I have a good video going over photography settings here ruclips.net/video/LxCxVlATBMs/видео.html 3. I have a lot more R5 content with tips and tricks on how to use that camera that you can find on my webpage here www.vaskoobscura.com/blog?category=EOS%20R5
You need an EF to RF adapter. You can buy the Canon adapter or you can buy a third party adapter. Here is a link to a video I made about it ruclips.net/video/tJ5G1uG1xJc/видео.html EF lenses auto focus just the same on the RF mount with an adapter as they did on a native EF body. I haven't had any issues with EF lenses on my R5.
@@artsmodelstation9396 I don't know about your budget. But when you already have a Nikon camera I'd look into the Nikon mirrorless lineup. Especially the new Z-lens 24-120 4S seems to be a very good lens if you don't need 2.8 glass. Also those Z cameras might offer you enough quality ... However you cannot go wrong with either brand (Canon, Nikon or Sony).
Hi thanks for the question. I'm no expert on Clog3 but let me point you to a video that I found really helpful when I was learning about Clog3. ruclips.net/video/3yTtkJTeZJE/видео.html
Would you get the r5 for 3k or the r5c for 3.9k? That's the cheapest i can find both bodies in Europe. I'm not sure if the r5c is worth 900 euros more (I do both photo and video). Trying to decide.
It's a tough call I don't like the R5C. I think it has a lot of issues for the price you're paying. Feels like an unpolished product. I would recommend buying an R5 and using that for now and then when the R5mkII comes out sell the old R5 and by the new R5mkII. I'm sure the mkII will have amazing video features. Canon will try to beat the Z8 and A7R5 with it's new camera. :)
I have a question for you. I can’t afford the RF lenses right now too expensive for me. Which lenses in EF line up would you recommend?. I usually take pictures at parties and weddings. I occasionally take landscaping photos. Thank you so much.
The EF 16-35 f2.8 L is a fantastic fast wide angle for weddings and landscapes because it has distortion correcting optics. It's great value for money. EF 50mm f1.4 is a really nice affordable fast prime good for weddings. The EF 24-70mm f2.8 L is also a really good lens for weddings as well. Those three lenses can get you through a wedding day and produce really beautiful shots. Hope that helps good luck.
watching this april 2024 and honestly, summer 24 for a mark 2 would fit my timeline so perfectly lmao. either gonna get the M2 or save a couple bucks and stick with the M1 since im upgrading from a 80D (anything would be a vast improvement atp)
Hey thanks for the comment. Oh ya either one would be an upgrade from the 80D. If you don't mind me making a suggestion I would say buy the original R5 and put the money you save into some of that amazing new RF glass. You'll get better results to your image quality with the new RF lenses + an R5 than you would with an R5mkII and older lenses. Welcome to the channel by the way.
I'd like to switch to canon and I want the 28-70 so badly but I'm broke so I can't buy an R3 + 28-70, would you still recommend the R for professional work? I don't need the ultimate image quality, just need it to be reliable autofocus wise
The R is still absolutely amazing for image quality. When I send off images for clients it's hard to tell the difference between the R and R5 when it comes to image quality. The R is still the second highest resolution image sensor in Canon's lineup. I just made a video talking about the R in 2023. ruclips.net/video/zIvmsVlbPTs/видео.html
I'm a beginner and I was originally was going to get the R10 but I did some research and found out that that camera isn't good for low light cause of the small sensors that I needed full frame sensors and I came across the R6 and 5 so my question is, as a beginner do you recommend me getting the R5 for low key portraits?
Having just recently traded in my R6, for an R5, I give you this advice, The R6 is a fantastic all around camera. However, for bird photography, you need cropping abilities that won’t degrade if you do crop. This is a weakness of the R6. The R5 excels in birding photography. For your needs, I’d go for the R6. You will really enjoy taking portrait photos with it.
That's a really good deal. The R5 is a better camera than the R6mkII in many ways. But one thing I will say is that price is almost too good to be true. Make sure you do your research on the person or business selling the camera to make sure you're not being scammed.
I have the 5D mk II but don’t use it. You can install software that gives it extra abilities such as zebra focusing and other stuff and activate by pressing the trashcan button. Not sure if it’s still supported but I found it interesting at the time.
Just a note on the 30min video limit, it's applied to all photography cameras that shoot video due to an additional 5.4% in tariffs determined by the ITA.
You would be right if it was 2001. That tariff was the reason a 30min video recording limit was implemented in hybrid cameras, however that tariff was nulled a long time ago. It doesn't exist anymore but Canon used it as an excuse so they could upsell you on cinema cameras. Unfortunately for Canon consumers are smart and simply switched brands. Canon has lost market share because of that silly choice. Thankfully the new cameras don't have that 30min limit.
@@vaskoobscura_ I’ve been out of it for so long, I didn’t know the tariff was removed. No wonder I kept hearing about “unlimited recording”. And yep, I’ve was a Canon shooter til I sold everything to become a Leica film photographer. Hmmm…seems Sony is in my future when I get back to digital.
Oh wow that would be pretty nice. But as you said beyond the tech capabilities of this camera. Even the new Lumix S5IIx cant shoot full frame 4k 60 and it has active cooling.
In a one word answer absolutely. The R5 sensor is the best sensor Canon has ever put in a camera you can expect to see more details and sharpness out of your lens then ever before. Now with that being said it is important to note that the R5 sensor is a demanding high resolution sensor and to take full advantage of it you'll need to use good quality glass. If you're shooting with low end EF lenses the imperfections in the lens will show. Hope that helps.
I hav intension to purchase one, just wonder the old EF lens will perform well on R5 since lot of reviews suggest that the resolving power from DSLR lens might be outdated for the mirroless R series.
Yes old Canon EF lenses work like normal on the RF mount. DSLR lenses should work fine with the R5 it's the old film era lenses that might not produce the best results. Regarding resolution the 45mp sensor is demanding and you need good glass to get the sharpest images. But it all depends on where you show the images. If you shrink your 45mp image for web or social media it looks amazing. But if you're making big prints you'll want to buy some sharp lenses. Hope that helps.
You can subscribe to my RUclips and follow me on Instagram and be part of the community. Eventually I'll start doing destination shoots and maybe you can be a part of that in the future. Thanks for the comment.
Thanks for the question. I use CFexpress type B cards with my R5. Sandisk in my opinion is the most reliable brand. I've never had an issue with them but the prices are pretty high. Last summer I bought an Agelbird 521 gig card on the recommendation from a friend. It's less expensive and just as fast and I'm happy to say it has worked beautifully for me. No issues at all. www.amazon.ca/Angelbird-AV-PRO-CFexpress-SE/dp/B09RWW247J/ref=asc_df_B09RWW247J/?tag=googleshopc0c-20&linkCode=df0&hvadid=578878818136&hvpos=&hvnetw=g&hvrand=10939846938341021263&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=9000970&hvtargid=pla-1637144638009&psc=1 Hope that helps.
I know of that adapter but the issue for me is I don't know what kind of glass they are using in their adapter. I would rather buy an ND filter for the front of my lens from a company I trust. But that being said it would be interesting to buy that filter and test it out against other ND filter brands to see if there is any difference in the quality of glass.
You mentioned the R5 wouldn't be good for sports or action photography, but I've seen other reviewers mention that the camera is great in that area. Can you further comment on how this camera would perform under those circumstances?
Buffer, and screen blackout/lag would be the biggest issues. The R5 is just not fast enough for high speed sports. It really comes down to the pace of play in the sport you are shooting and the expectations you have on your camera. I'm not in the sports photography game anymore but there are some videos out there from professional sports photography shooters talking about the limitations of using the R5 for sports and action photography. I would suggest watching those to get the info from the people who use these cameras in those environments. Hope that helps.
@@vaskoobscura_There is nothing wrong with the R5 for sports. It has 12fps in mech shutter and uses a high speed CF Express card. I would suggest you don't know what you're talking about since you're not in the sports game.
@@thegoldenhours Added to that, who cares about buffer if you can put a high speed CF Express card in it? You can count the number sports shooters who shoot full res RAW files for sports, on one hand.
The R5 battery heats up quickly when using video. Canon truthfully admits to this weakness in the camera design. WAIT for the Canon R5 II and you'll be happy.
The R5 II will be a better camera for sure. I use a dummy battery with my R5 when I shoot video and I can record for a long time before the camera gets hot and I don't have to worry about the battery dying while recording. Gives me one less thing to worry about when I shoot video. Thanks for the comment. Can't wait for the R5 II to come out.
@@vaskoobscura_ You mentioned that it's really sharp when shooting models. Is this an issue with portraits? What filter did u put on it to help out? Thanks.
After years using the R5 I can say the joystick is no longer needed for my workflow at least. They will probably add the joystick and maybe EVF with eye tracking like the R3? And lastly, I have no desire to upgrade to the mark 2 because it’s already more than enough camera than I could ever need. However! The only thing canon could do or has to do in order for me to upgrade is add the screen that comes on the Sony A7R5! Otherwise it’s not worth it to me, the updated AF on the R50 feels better than the R5 sadly but yea that’s my thoughts on this. The R1 would be nice but I love having the option to have a battery grip attached and it will most likely be crazy expensive at launch so if they come out with a new firmware that takes away record time limits I’ll be happy to buy another mark 1 R5!
I agree with you. the R5 is a lot more camera than most people need. I saw a video recently of the R5 with an RF 85 1.2 out resolving a medium format. It's amazing how far technology has progressed. I also agree about the mlti angle screen. That would be a nice upgrade. Thanks for the comment.
Why are Sony users so insecure that they have to leave comments like this on videos about other camera brands? Sony users are the only ones who do this it’s so strange. A7sIII is a 12 megapixel video first camera. It’s aimed at a different market than the R5. Thanks for the comment.
I'd love to get my hands on a Sony and test it out. The Sony A7RV would be the direct competitor to the R5. It's two years newer and has more advanced features. Canon is countering with the R5 Mark II this summer. Both systems are great. If you're trying to decide between them I'd suggest going to a camera store and holding them in your hands. Go with the one that feels good in your hands. :)

Absolutely love my R5, but I agree. Make sure you invest in good lenses, especially the RF L line. For example, I love my RF 35mm 2.8 on my R6 (20MP), but on my R5, it is just so disappointing on sharpness. Can't wait for them to bring out an L version of it!
oh ya!!!! You and me both. Can you imagine if they released a 35mm f1.2 L USM. That would be dream lens.
They make an rf 35mm 2.8??
Still using my trusty 5D mark ii and 6D in 2023 with no problem at all
Oh wow! Truth be told that 5D mkII was one of my favorite all time cameras. I was sad when I sold it to upgrade to the mkIII. It's a workhorse.
When will we get cameras with microscopic zoom?
That would be crazy. Imagine what you could shoot with that.
Yesss! Because I just upgraded from the original R. Paired with the atamos ninja V for video is game changing as well
That Ninja V definitely opens a new world of options for video. It's an awesome piece of kit. Thanks for the comments and welcome to the channel.
If you use the EF lenses does that mean you don’t use all the pixels? Does it crop with the adapter?
The camera will only crop in on the sensor if you use RF-S or EF-S lenses. If you use an EF lens there is not crop on the sensor.
Just bought R5 , I could use suggestions on lens focusing response EF 70-200 f2.8 IS III USM ? is it my settings?
Congratulations on your new camera :) The R5 is amazing I'm sure you're going to love using it.
1. The first thing you should do is update your firmware so you have the latest autofocus settings available ruclips.net/video/nTIBStNHLBY/видео.html
2. Setup your menu I have a good video going over photography settings here ruclips.net/video/LxCxVlATBMs/видео.html
3. To get the best autofocus out of your lens check out this video where I talk specifically about the Af settings ruclips.net/video/oYTMWsZoLrc/видео.html
Hope that helps set you off in the right direction. I have a lot more R5 content with tips and tricks on how to use that camera that you can find on my webpage here www.vaskoobscura.com/blog?category=EOS%20R5
Q: I love Sigma and Tamron lens. How do you go about mounting those lenses ? And will all the perks of autofocusing work ?
You need an EF to RF adapter. You can buy the Canon adapter or you can buy a third party adapter. Here is a link to a video I made about it ruclips.net/video/tJ5G1uG1xJc/видео.html
EF lenses auto focus just the same on the RF mount with an adapter as they did on a native EF body. I haven't had any issues with EF lenses on my R5.
@@vaskoobscura_ thanks ! im building my wedding kit. got nikon D750 for $500. once i do couple weddings definitely will get R5.
Do you provide Cinematography classes.. i want to learn how to perfectly expose Clog3.. Can you help me out?
Hi thanks for the question. I'm no expert on Clog3 but let me point you to a video that I found really helpful when I was learning about Clog3. ruclips.net/video/3yTtkJTeZJE/видео.html
@@vaskoobscura_ really very thanks.
You said something about going from 45 down to 20 MP to clear up a blurry picture. Can you explain? I assume you mean in post.
Yes I was talking about shrinking an image in post. Everything sharpens up when you shrink it.
Great video, my friend. Thanks for your input, and now you have a new subscriber too
Welcome aboard! Appreciate the comment. Got a lot more R5 content on the way :)
Thank you for taking the time to reply back.
No touch display? I have an S1R... do you think I would get an update by charging?
watching this april 2024 and honestly, summer 24 for a mark 2 would fit my timeline so perfectly lmao. either gonna get the M2 or save a couple bucks and stick with the M1 since im upgrading from a 80D (anything would be a vast improvement atp)
Can you wirelessly transfer photos from your r5 to your iPhone like you can do with the 80d?
Yes the R5 has a wireless connection. You can even setup the R5 to dump images to an FTP drive as you shoot.
@@vaskoobscura_amazing feature !
Nice Vid!
Thanks. Appreciated.
I was looking at an R6 Mii for family videos, photos and kids' sports. I found a used R5 for $1900...is that a smarter buy?
That's a really good deal. The R5 is a better camera than the R6mkII in many ways. But one thing I will say is that price is almost too good to be true. Make sure you do your research on the person or business selling the camera to make sure you're not being scammed.
@@vaskoobscura_ you were right...too good to be true. $2900 seems to be the cheapest now
I have EOS 5D Mark 2 and it is still flawless in 2023. I would say it has made a benchmark for durability
I used to shoot with that camera as well. It's a workhorse of a camera. Thanks for the comment.
I would like to see R5 firmware update with 4K 60p (no crop oversampling)
But impossible
Oh wow that would be pretty nice. But as you said beyond the tech capabilities of this camera. Even the new Lumix S5IIx cant shoot full frame 4k 60 and it has active cooling.
I have EF lens and will be using a RF mount will I have the same details with that ?
In a one word answer absolutely. The R5 sensor is the best sensor Canon has ever put in a camera you can expect to see more details and sharpness out of your lens then ever before. Now with that being said it is important to note that the R5 sensor is a demanding high resolution sensor and to take full advantage of it you'll need to use good quality glass. If you're shooting with low end EF lenses the imperfections in the lens will show. Hope that helps.
@@vaskoobscura_even the 35mm 1.4 L II which Was the sharpest lense für EF, it sucks little bit on R5 compared to New rf lenses
@@vaskoobscura_ thanks a lot😃😃
Good quality mkii and newer EF L lenses are more than capable of resolving the 45mp sensor. 5DSR much?

which card is most compatible with canon EOS R5?
Thanks for the question. I use CFexpress type B cards with my R5. Sandisk in my opinion is the most reliable brand. I've never had an issue with them but the prices are pretty high. Last summer I bought an Agelbird 521 gig card on the recommendation from a friend. It's less expensive and just as fast and I'm happy to say it has worked beautifully for me. there is meike adapter with nd filter for 150Usd its one thing to consider
@@vaskoobscura_what screen blackout/lag? the R has it, yes, but the R5 not
Not sure what you are talking about, I use it for plenty of high frame rate action shots. The buffer is awesome, 20fps and great autofocus.
You can count the number sports shooters who shoot full res RAW files for sports, on one hand.
i plan to get it in 2-3 years when more bodies become available on the used market
It's going to continue to drop in value especially now that the R5 mark II is around the corner. Thanks for the comment.
Thankyou sirrrrrrrrrrrr
You're welcome.
@@vaskoobscura_the Hot failure comes from battery? i thought from the sensor
@@vaskoobscura_ You mentioned that it's really sharp when shooting models. Is this an issue with portraits? What filter did u put on it to help out? Thanks.

Thanks for the comment. The R5 is a pretty awesome camera that's for sure.
I got a 6D (not mark 2) in 2024, its not that big of a deal
it still shoots great images. It's all in how you see the shot.
Is the current top of the line 5 series of Canon worth buying in 2023? Well... that is how you feed the algorithm ^^.
You are correct and I agree with your sentiment. Unfortunately in RUclips land you have to play by RUclips's rules to grow. :)
Z8 is 8n market ,R5 sales slowed
The Z8 brought a lot of new features to the price point so I think a lot of people will sit and wait for the R5 mkII.
there is no alternative for the R5, so what? waiting for r5 mk2.
That's a good plan. The R5 mkII will be an amazing camera.
R5 price already dropped
I noticed that it's almost $500 off in some places. It's still the best photo camera canon has. What do you think the Mark II will have?
Sony A7sIII is better
Why are Sony users so insecure that they have to leave comments like this on videos about other camera brands? Sony users are the only ones who do this it’s so strange. A7sIII is a 12 megapixel video first camera. It’s aimed at a different market than the R5. Thanks for the comment.
For $3000 and my little pinky still hangs. Common Canon, bit more real estate pls.
lol. They should make different grips for different hand sizes.
smaller is better, buy a grip

Great review, thx! How does the R5 compare to the other options from Sony et? Would be great to see a comparison : )
